Galaxy Note 10 Android 10 One UI 2.0 beta program announced in the US

Samsung US has confirmed that the Galaxy Note 10 Android 10 One UI 2.0 beta program is coming soon. Yesterday, Samsung Korea made the same announcement, and if the company’s customer care representatives are to be believed, the beta should arrive tomorrow, October 24. That’s not written in stone, however, and we will only know for sure once the beta program actually goes live.

Unlike the Galaxy S10 series, the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ will only be getting the beta on the unlocked variants in the US. Last year, the Galaxy Note 9’s Android Pie beta was also initially made available only to unlocked models, although some carriers did let their users test out the new software eventually. The same will hopefully be the case this time around as well. For those wondering, the Galaxy S10 beta is available for users on Sprint and T-Mobile.

Galaxy Note 10+ 5G not included in beta?

galaxy note 10 one ui 2.0 android 10 us

It doesn’t seem like owners of the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G will get to test One UI 2.0 in the US, as the notice Samsung has posted for teasing the beta doesn’t mention the device. In contrast, the Galaxy S10 beta teasers mentioned that the Galaxy S10 5G would have a separate beta program, and considering Samsung will be launching the beta for the Note 10 5G and Note 10+ 5G in South Korea, it’s unfortunate that the company isn’t extending the same courtesy to other markets. Fingers crossed that will change at a later date.

Wondering what’s new in One UI 2.0? Check out our in-depth comparison of the UI changes and improvements it brings over One UI 1.x and all the new features it introduces to Galaxy devices in the video below.

Samsung Internet v11 arrives with Chromium 75 and minor UI changes

The latest version of the Samsung Internet browser has now started rolling out. The previous version was released only a couple of months ago. It was based on Chromium 71. For those who are unaware, Chromium is the underlying engine that powers the browser.

Samsung Internet v11 is now being rolled out. It comes with the Chromium 75 base, a much more recent version that was released in June 2019. The one that Samsung Internet v10 was based on was released in December 2018.

Samsung Internet v11 is now rolling out

This release brings together many of the improvements that were introduced with Chromium 72, 73, 74 and 75. This includes some minor UI changes as well. For example, the dark theme has been improved and there are better pull-to-refresh animations. Several security-related improvements are included as well.

Other minor UI changes include the removal of a special section at the top of the overflow menu for history, downloads, and saved pages. This means that users can now move or remove these icons like they already could with others.

The latest version of Samsung Internet is now gradually being rolled out via the Google Play Store. It’s going to be a while before this version is available for download. We’ll be sure to add the APK to our database as well. That way, you’ll be able to download it without having to wait for it to go live in your region.

Samsung is teasing a new Exynos launch, could happen tomorrow

Samsung has sent out a teaser for a new Exynos launch and there’s a reason to believe that it could take place tomorrow. The teaser was posted on Twitter through the official account for Samsung Exynos.

The teaser itself doesn’t provide many details of exactly what it is that the company is going to announce. It’s still far too early for a new flagship chipset that would power the Galaxy S11, for example, but there are some theories.

New Samsung Exynos announcement expected tomorrow

We heard back in August that Samsung had begun testing the Exynos 9630 mid-range chipset. It’s the one that’s likely going to power the 2020 Galaxy A series. No tech specs of this chipset are available right now.

With regards to GPU, there has been quite a lot of anticipation to see what comes of the recent partnership between Samsung and AMD. It was announced earlier this year that Samsung will be bringing AMD’s graphics technology to its smartphones. The strategic partnership covers ultra low power, high performance graphics technologies. However, some reports suggest that the first Samsung chipset with an AMD GPU may not arrive until 2021.

The teaser also mentions “mobile intelligence” so it’s possible that this might have something to do with artificial intelligence. The company does have a Samsung Tech Day 2019 event scheduled for tomorrow where the keynote will be from its semiconductor division. The agenda mentions sessions for 5G, GPU and artificial intelligence.

So it’s quite possible that whatever is being teased here is going to be unveiled tomorrow at Samsung Tech Day 2019. The event is taking place in San Jose, California with the keynote being scheduled for 10 AM PT.

Galaxy Watch Active 2 LTE and UAE launch in Korea this week

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 LTE and Under Armour Edition are nearing their South Korean market release, as Samsung just announced that they will be joining the Wi-Fi-only version on store shelves on October 23 and October 25, respectively.

The company intends to make this release a bit more exciting by gifting customers discount coupons for the Galaxy Buds along with every Galaxy Watch Active 2 purchased by November 30. Other coupons drop the price for smartwatch accessories, and Samsung also prepared incentives for prospective Galaxy Note 10 buyers in South Korea who may be wanting a smartwatch to go along with their new flagship phone.

Galaxy Watch Active 2 LTE and UAE

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 LTE and Under Armour Edition are similar on a technical level aside from the lack of LTE on the UAE, and both models come with a 40mm or 44mm dial. Nevertheless, the Under Armour Edition features unique UA-branded silicon straps; it includes a UA watchface and ships with MapMyRun pre-loaded along with six months of subscription to the service for free.

Samsung will sweeten the deal by offering coupons worth 50,000 won ($42) with every purchase. They are valid until the end of November and can be used to lower the price of smartwatch accessories. More so, new Galaxy Note 10 5G and Note 10+ 5G buyers who will pair their smartphone with the Galaxy Watch Active 2 LTE or UAE will receive a smartphone case and a smartwatch strap for free.

The 40mm and 44mm Galaxy Watch Active 2 LTE is priced at 449,000 won ($382) and 458,000 won ($390) respectively. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 Under Armour Edition will set customers back 330,000 won ($281) or 446,000 won ($380).

You’ll need Android 10 on your Galaxy device for Gmail’s dark mode

It came as a pleasant surprise when dark mode for the Google Play Store started working for owners of Galaxy devices on Android Pie even though dark mode for Google apps is supposed to work only on Android 10. Later, Instagram also updated its app with a dark mode for Android 10 that works on Galaxy devices running Android Pie. But, if you were waiting for Gmail’s dark mode to arrive before Samsung rolls out Android 10 and One UI 2.0, you will be disappointed.

It looks like Gmail’s dark mode requires Android 10 and won’t work on Samsung devices running Pie. That’s evidenced by the fact that two of our Galaxy S10s running the One UI 2.0 beta show the dark mode option in Gmail but not any of our Galaxy phones — including the Galaxy Note 10 — that are still on Android Pie. That’s a bit unfortunate considering Gmail is one of the most used Google apps, even though it makes complete sense that the maker of the Android operating system requires a device to be on the latest version to take advantage of its features.

Samsung, for its part, has kicked off the Android 10 One UI 2.0 beta program for the Galaxy S10 lineup a full month before the Galaxy S9 received the Android Pie beta last year, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the company will roll out the stable version faster as well. There has been only one beta Android 10 update for the Galaxy S10 series and the program hasn’t extended to other countries yet, so we will have to wait a couple of months before we can use Gmail and other Google apps with a dark interface.

T-Mobile Galaxy Tab S4 gets Bixby Voice and Call & Message Continuity

The Galaxy Tab S4 offered in the US by T-Mobile is finally getting one of the features that were promised at launch, namely Bixby Voice. The software package also introduces Call & Message Continuity support and includes the August 2019 security patch.

Bixby Voice and Call & Message Continuity rolled out on the unlocked Galaxy Tab S4 worldwide in late August along with the July 2019 security patch. T-Mobile’s release comes with a newer security patch but the feature list is otherwise the same. The update is identified as baseband version T837TUVU3BSI1 and weighs a little under 700MB.

T-Mobile Galaxy Tab S4 finally getting Bixby Voice

The Galaxy Tab S4 doesn’t come with a dedicated Bixby button, and back when the tablet was officially unveiled, Samsung confirmed that it will gain Bixby Voice support along with a future Android Pie release. But Android Pie came and went and the Galaxy S4 did not receive Bixby Voice. This wasn’t entirely surprising given how even the newer Galaxy Tab S5e shipped with Android Pie, yet it still lacked Bixby Voice support at launch.

Things changed for the unlocked Galaxy Tab S4 a couple of months ago, and T-Mobile US is now catching up with the rest of the world. A later release is better than no release, and besides, T-Mobile has included the more recent Android security patch along with the new features.

Eligible Galaxy Tab S4 owners in the US should be getting an update notification at any moment. If you haven’t been lucky enough to get the notification yet, you can trigger the update manually by opening the Settings app, navigating to Software update and tapping Download and install.

A few banks take measures in light of Galaxy S10 fingerprint sensor flaw

A few banking institutions in the UK have decided to temporarily disable support for Galaxy S10 and Note 10 devices in light of the biometric security issues that came to light last week.

The issue involves the in-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor employed by both flagship series and some third-party silicone cases that can allow unauthorized users to unlock the devices. You can read more about the issue in Samsung’s official statement on the matter.

Banking institutions are temporarily halting S10/Note 10 support

Samsung is already working on a software fix that should disallow unauthorized people from unlocking Galaxy S10 or Note 10 units with their unregistered fingerprints. Until then, two UK banking institutions, namely NatWest and Nationwide Building Society, have taken measures to prevent unauthorized transfers from taking place.

Specifically, NatWest has made its mobile banking app unobtainable by Galaxy S10/Note 10 users via the Play Store. Meanwhile, NationWide Building Society kept the app available but disabled the fingerprint authentication option from the log-in screen. Likewise, tech YouTuber ASBYT shared a screenshot via Twitter a few days ago, revealing that HSBC UK disabled the fingerprint login option in its app for Galaxy S10 devices too.

Things should go back to normal and the fingerprint login option for these third-party banking services should return once Samsung releases a fix and enough time will have passed for most Galaxy S10/Note 10 owners to install the patch. Samsung didn’t reveal any timeframes as to when we can expect the fix to be released, but we’re certain that the company isn’t taking this issue lightly.

Samsung offers a sneak-peek into its SDC 2019 sessions

Samsung will be hosting its sixth annual Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) in San Jose, California, from October 29-30. With only a few days left for the event, the company has published a preview of the important sessions that will be held during the two-day conference. This year’s emphasis will be on AI, Bixby, 5G, security, enterprise solutions, IoT, etc.

The sessions about Bixby will focus on the opportunities, building conversational experiences, and the marketplace for Bixby capsules. 5G-related sessions, on the other hand, are a bit vaguer and will cover opportunities for B2B app development and new 5G solutions for businesses. Sessions on security will touch upon Samsung’s approach to blockchain, automatic security analysis tools for detecting vulnerabilities, and more.

On the enterprise solutions front, SDC19 will have sessions about IBM and Samsung’s partnership and the Knox Partner Program. On the IoT side of things, Samsung will talk about the next phase of growth and digital content for smart appliances. Apart from these, the event will also have sessions about developing Android apps for foldable devices, One UI, 8K streaming, etc.

As evident from the event’s name and sessions, this is a conference aimed at developers and focuses mainly on SDKs, Dev tools, business opportunities, etc. for the company’s current and upcoming products. Nevertheless, we can still expect a lot of information that will be of interest to Samsung users and fans. SamMobile will be there at the conference to cover anything and everything that we believe will be relevant to our readers.

Samsung patent reveals full-blown, recent AR headset design

A relatively fresh design patent application reveals a full-blown render of an AR headset from Samsung. The Korean company seems poised to keep up with some of the other (future) players in the augmented reality space.

Samsung AR headset

Rumors about Samsung working on its own AR headset date back years. In the meantime, the Gear VR came and went, with the Galaxy Note 10 notably lacking VR support. Still, clear signs have been pointing to Samsung taking the AR route for some time, and with competitors like Apple expected to launch an AR headset in the not-so-distant future, we can expect Samsung to keep up. A fresh, recent patent goes a long way to support this expectation.

The guys at GalaxyClub are now pointing to a design patent published days ago in South Korea, titled Head Mounted Display. The application for the patent was filed in February of this year, so we are getting a relatively fresh look at what is cooking in Samsung’s kitchen. Plus, we are treated to a full-blown render of the device, courtesy of Samsung itself.

samsung ar headset render

As this is a design patent, we do not learn any of the technical details of the headset. There seem to be two HUDs (heads-up displays), possibly two cameras, and a cable that connects via the right leg of the glasses. A speaker, too, can be discerned, or perhaps we are just looking at a tiny vent.

As usual, we cannot predict if and when Samsung will launch a product as shown in the patent application at hand. For now, we will take this as a clear sign Samsung is still hot on the AR track, regardless of whether that leads to an actual product arriving in 2020 or later.

Samsung to increase OLED supply for Apple’s newest iPhone

Once again, Samsung is the main supplier of OLED panels for Apple’s iPhone. The Cupertino-based company recently launched its new iPhones and is now working hard to sell as many units as possible.

It appears that there’s stiff demand for the new devices as Samsung is reportedly going to increase OLED supply for the newest iPhones. According to reports, Samsung Display is now expected to ship up to 50 million OLED display panels for the iPhone in the second half of this year.

Samsung Display may supply up to 50 million iPhone OLED panels

Samsung’s display affiliate is currently the primary supplier of OLED panels for Samsung. It accounts for 90 percent of all OLED supplies for the iPhone, this includes newer models like the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max as well. The models with LCD displays have panels from the likes of LG Display and Sharp. Apple has brought on LG Display as an OLED screen vendor as well. It’s supplying a fraction of the OLED panels for the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

The report mentions that Samsung Display supplied 22.2 million OLED panels to Apple in the third quarter ending September. 9.9 million of those units were shipped in the month of September alone, a 40 percent increase compared to the 6.9 million units initially planned.

Samsung Display is now expected to ship 9.8 million units and 5 million units in the month of October and November respectively. Adding in the expected supply for the month of December, the total number of panels shipped to Apple this year could likely hit 50 million.

Increased demand for the iPhone 11 certainly works in Samsung’s favor as well. The conglomerate will see higher revenues and operating profit for its display affiliate should Apple’s latest flagship do well.

Galaxy S8 Active gets October security update on T-Mobile

It was a little over a month ago that the Galaxy S8 Active was finally updated to Android 9 Pie by T-Mobile, but the carrier didn’t just stop there. It released a new update a couple of weeks later to bring the September security patch to the device, and it is now rolling out an update that bundles the October 2019 security patch. The update comes with build number G892USQS5CSI5.

Since the Galaxy S8 Active was only recently updated with a newer version of Android, it shouldn’t come as a surprise as the latest update doesn’t bring any new features. Quite a few of those are packed into Android Pie, as you can see in our One UI feature focus series of articles, and T-Mobile is back to focusing on pushing out security updates to the last Galaxy S Active smartphone. For those wondering, the Galaxy S8 Active is not eligible for the One UI 2.0 update, even if a recent benchmark showing the Galaxy S8 running Android 10 suggests that Samsung may finally be bringing three major OS upgrades to flagship phones.

T-Mobile has released the latest update for the Galaxy S8 Active over the air. You can download it from the Settings » Software update menu on your phone by tapping the Download and install option. You might have to repeat the process a couple of times before the update shows up, and if it doesn’t, you can download the latest firmware from our firmware archive to upgrade manually using a Windows PC.

Galaxy A51 spotted on Geekbench with Android 10, Exynos 9611 chipset

The Galaxy A51 has made an appearance on the Geekbench benchmark database, revealing some of its specs. As expected, the A51 runs Android 10, suggesting its release will come sometime after the Galaxy S11 next year. However, with other 2020 A series phones, like the Galaxy A71, also in testing with Android 10, it’s possible Samsung is going to turn things around and launch non-flagship devices with the latest version of the OS ahead of the next Galaxy S flagship.

And it makes sense, considering how well the 2019 Galaxy A series phones have done in various markets. The flagship phone segment has been slowing down in recent years while the mid-range segment has grown, and if Samsung intends to launch the Galaxy A51 before the Galaxy S11, the latest software out of the box would be an excellent attraction for many consumers. In fact, Android 10 might be one of the key highlights of the A51, as the Geekbench entry says it runs on the Exynos 9611 chipset that powers the Galaxy A50s and not the new Exynos 9630 that Samsung is currently working on.

As we had reported last month, the A51 may also come with the same storage options as the Galaxy A50/A50s: 64GB and 128GB. The version tested on Geekbench has 4GB of RAM, but we can expect the 128GB configuration to have 6GB of RAM. No other specs for the device are currently known, although Samsung could equip the A51 with a higher-resolution rear camera, perhaps the 64-megapixel one that debuted on the Galaxy A70s.

One UI 2.0 feature focus: Record the screen using built-in screen recorder

With One UI 2.0, one of the most underrated features that debuted on the Galaxy Note 10 is making its way to the Galaxy S10 and other Galaxy devices that will be updated to Android 10. You can now record the screen using the built-in screen recorder instead of downloading third-party solutions or by tricking other Samsung apps.

The built-in screen recorder doesn’t just record what’s on the screen for you. You can record sounds picked up by the phone’s microphone and audio played on the device, add a video selfie feed that can be moved around freely, and even doodle on the screen while recording is active. Screen recording can be started via the dedicated toggle in the notification shade, but we won’t go into further details of how the screen recorder works, as we already have an excellent guide for the feature that you can check out.

Below is a short screen recording from the Galaxy S10 if you’re interested in seeing a sample. To find out what else is new in One UI 2.0, take a look at our One UI 2.0 feature focus series of articles and this extensive list that we have compiled for you to see all the UI improvements and changes it brings over One UI 1.x.

Is the built-in screen recorder something you will use often once your Galaxy phone or tablet is updated to Android 10?
