Gear 360 now 71% off at Verizon

The Gear 360 is Samsung’s 360-degree camera announced last February that lets you capture both “circular” and still photos and virtual reality videos. We brought you an Amazon deal on the Gear 360 two weeks ago that would take 27% off the retail price, but a new deal today gives you the VR camera of your dreams for its lowest price yet.

Verizon is offering the Gear 360 for 71% off, down from $349.99 to $99.99 — $250 off from the original retail price. There are no strings attached here, except to say that you can either pay for the device upfront or have Verizon bill your account (Verizon has billed my account for the Gear 360, so account billing is an option for Verizon customers).

Gear 360 Verizon sale

The Gear 360 camera features a 0.5-inch PMOLED (passive matrix organic light-emitting diode) display with a screen resolution of 72 x 32p, runs on a 1Ghz, dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM, 8GB of onboard storage with a microSD card slot for expandable storage, contains dual 15MP Sony IMX147 cameras with f/2.0 aperture, IP68 water and dust resistance (with housing; IP53 without), along with BT 4.0, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac WiFi, NFC, and a 1,350mAh battery. Check out our Gear 360 review before going all in.

This is a good deal, but you can either buy now or wait for the Gear 360 Pro set to arrive with the Galaxy S8 that has been cited on a renown import/export tracking website. Even if Verizon is doing this sale to clear out inventory to make room for the upcoming Gear 360 model, it’s still a good opportunity for buyers. Get your Samsung Gear 360 camera at the link below.

Have you picked up a Gear 360? Did you take advantage of this deal? Are you thinking about it? Come back and let us know if you did.

Thanks, Salvatore, for the tip!

Galaxy A9 Pro price in India slashed

The Galaxy A9 Pro happens to be Samsung’s most feature-packed smartphone in its Galaxy A series. It was initially released in China back in March last year and the company brought it over to India in September. The handset was priced at Rs. 32,490 at launch ($485) but at a local event today, Samsung has confirmed that it has now slashed the Galaxy A9 Pro price in India.

Samsung confirmed today that it’s slashing the Galaxy A9 Pro price in India to Rs. 29,900 ($447). It’s a nominal cut but nevertheless, it will be welcomed by those who have been looking to purchase this smartphone, who doesn’t like saving some money after all?

Customers get a good smartphone for Rs. 29,900. It features a 6-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 652 processor with 4GB RAM, 32GB of expandable internal storage, a 16-megapixel rear camera with Optical Image Stabilization, an 8-megapixel front camera, dual-SIM support, 4G LTE, fingerprint sensor, fast charging support, Android 6.0 Marshmallow and more.

Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy A9 Pro will be available for purchase at this reduced price from local online retailer Flipkart starting March 3.

Samsung Galaxy S8 leaks in all its glory

The Galaxy S8 has been leaked once again, and this time it appears to be the AT&T variant of the smartphone. The black variant of the device appeared on BGR, and its similar to most other leaks and renders that we’ve seen in the past.

The phone appears to have a top bezel that’s larger than the bottom bezel, unlike what we’ve been watching in Samsung’s official teaser. The Galaxy S8 has a curved display, complete with curved corners. We can also see those new on-screen buttons at top lower part of the screen. The power/lock button is on the right side, while the volume and Bixby buttons are on the left side of the device.

There’s an earpiece, front-facing camera, and a bunch of sensors above the display. The SIM card slot is at the top of the device, while the 3.5mm headphone jack, USB Type-C port, microphone, and the loudspeaker is at the bottom. There doesn’t appear to be an image of the back of the device.

Yet another Galaxy S8 video clip leaks

We’ve seen a couple of leaked video clips recently that apparently show the Galaxy S8 in action. We already have a very good idea of what the next-generation Samsung flagship is going to look like courtesy of the endless stream of leaked renders and images. Samsung’s official Galaxy S8 teaser also hints at the same design.

Today, we’ve spotted yet another leaked video clip of the Galaxy S8, though it’s just a few seconds long, it shows us what appears to be a Galaxy S8 that’s plugged in. As we’ve heard time and again, the handset is going to have very slim bezels which will basically make the front of the device appear as a big piece of glass. You’ve got to admit, it looks pretty good.

It goes without saying that we will continue to hear and see more leaks about the Galaxy S8 in the days leading up to the official launch. At least now we know when that’s going to happen. Samsung confirmed last week that it’s going to officially unveil the Galaxy S8 at a special event in New York City and London on March 29th.

Samsung officially announces the rugged Galaxy Xcover 4 smartphone

We had been picking up on hints that Samsung could soon launch a new Xcover smartphone and it has finally followed through with the official announcement. Samsung confirmed today that it’s going to release the Galaxy Xcover 4 in April. The handset has been designed for harsh environments and it’s protected against water and dust as well as extreme impacts and temperatures.

The Galaxy Xcover 4 has IP68 water and dust resistance certification and it’s toughness is guaranteed by the US military standard MIL-STD 810G. This means that it’s going to work in extreme high and low temperatures while being able to withstand intense sunlight, salt water mist, mechanical shocks and vibrations.

The specs list reveals that the Galaxy Xcover 4 has a 4.99-inch TFT 720×1280 pixel resolution display with a 1.4GHz quad-core processor underneath that’s hooked up to 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage with microSD card support. Weighing just 172 grams, the handset also features a 2,800mAh battery.

Since it’s meant to be a very practical device, the touchscreen will respond even if you have gloves on. Aside from its HD display, the Xcover 4 features a 13-megapixel rear camera with integrated flash as well as a 5-megapixel front camera. Samsung is going to release the Galaxy Xcover 4 in Europe starting this April for 259 euro.

Nougat Tip: You can hide Secure Folder using its quick setting toggle

The Secure Folder app, which debuted with the Galaxy Note 7, was recently released for the Nougat-powered Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. It’s a place where you can keep your private files and apps protected using fingerprint authentication. However, if you wish to hide Secure Folder itself, you can do that as well.

If you’ve installed the Secure Folder app on your smartphone already, you will notice that there’s a dedicated quick setting toggle for Secure Folder. You can hide or reveal Secure Folder by tapping on the quick setting toggle. The app will disappear from the home screen as well as the app drawer if you activate the quick setting toggle, and then reappear if you enable it again.

Leaked Galaxy C5 Pro picture reveals color options

It was back in September last year when we exclusively reported that Samsung is working on the Galaxy C5 Pro. Samsung is expected to launch this handset in China initially but recent reports have suggested that the handset could eventually make its way out of the People’s Republic as well. A leaked Galaxy C5 Pro picture is making the rounds online today, it reveals the colors that this device will be offered in.

We can see in this Galaxy C5 Pro picture leaked on Weibo that the handset will be available in blue, rose gold and champagne gold colors. This is going to be a mid-range device so it’s not like the design or specs will be something to write home about. Previous reports suggest that the Galaxy C5 Pro might have a 5.2/5.5-inch Full HD display, Snapdragon 625 processor with 6GB RAM, 64GB of internal storage as well as a 16-megapixel front and back camera. It may run on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow when it arrives. Samsung is yet to confirm when it’s going to release the Galaxy C5 Pro and how much it’s going to charge for it.

Galaxy S7 edge gets February security patch in India

Samsung recently updated the Indian variant of the Galaxy S7 with the February security patch, and it is now rolling out the same update to the Galaxy S7 edge in the country. It’s rather odd to see Samsung still being unable to push out updates to both the regular and edge models at the same time, but the company will hopefully get a lid on these delays when it launches both versions of the Galaxy S8 with an Edge display.

In any case, the update is now available over the air for Indian users. Apart from the February security patch, there isn’t anything noteworthy in this update, although we have heard that it brings slight improvements to battery life. To get the update, hit the Download updates manually button in the Settings » Software update menu on your S7 edge (it is a 103 MB download). After it is done installing, your phone’s firmware build should be G935FXXU1DQBO.

Here are some more images of the new Gear VR’s wireless controller

Samsung’s new Gear VR headset comes bundled with a wireless controller, and it was unveiled at MWC 2017 earlier this week. However, Samsung released only a single image of the controller. If you wanted to look at the controller’s design, Engadget managed to go hands-on with it and click its pictures from all the angles.

The wireless controller, which has been developed in collaboration with Oculus, features an accelerometer and a gyro to track movements. It also has a circular clickable touchpad, navigation buttons, and volume keys on the front. There’s also a trigger button which can be used for shooting and other actions in VR games and apps. It uses two AAA batteries.

Nougat now rolling out for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands

At long last, Samsung is pushing out the much-anticipated Android 7.0 update for the unlocked variant of the Galaxy S7 (SM-G930F) and Galaxy S7 edge (SM-G935F) in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. As expected, the upgrade weighs in at a little less than 1.3GB and transports all of the new features baked into Nougat, in addition to a handful of extra bug fixes.

Chances are, you’re itching to start installing Nougat on your handset, so we’re not going to bore you with a long list of everything that’s changed. Instead, we’ve put together a short video highlighting all of the new features, which you can watch while the firmware is downloading. To see if the OTA is for your device, head into Settings » About Device » Download Updates Manually.

Nougat Tip: Get brightness control back in the notification shade

A quick note on carriers: While this rollout is for the unlocked model of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, a number of operators in the aforementioned regions pushed out the upgrade for their units a couple of weeks ago, while some started distributing it today — so if you own a carrier-branded device, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for a notification prompting you to install the update.

2017 will be the year of Samsung

What a year 2016 has been for Samsung. It was off to a great start with the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge which were undoubtedly the best Android smartphones released last year. Customers flocked to pick it up and Samsung’s results showed that its mobile business was performing very well courtesy of the stellar sales of the Galaxy S7 series. Samsung looked set to continue that momentum with the Galaxy Note 7 and the flagship was met with a great deal of enthusiasm when it was launched. It appeared to be a winning formula and demand was high right off the bat. However, things took a nasty turn when the Galaxy Note 7 started catching fire unexpectedly which forced Samsung to issue a global recall and eventually discontinue the handset altogether. It lost billions of dollars dealing with that mess and now promises to further improve product quality processes to ensure that something like that doesn’t happen again. Samsung has apologized multiple times for the fiasco and is now committed to leaving it all behind in the past. It’s 2017 now and the year is Samsung’s for the taking.

Before you point out that the company is having leadership issues, allow me to address that directly. Yes, Samsung Electronics vice chairman and heir to the throne Lee Jae-yong has been arrested due to allegations of bribery and corruption in relation to South Korea’s influence-peddling scandal and yes he will be indicted tomorrow. Nevertheless, the Samsung Group is made of up dozens of affiliates who have their own management structures. Just because the heir is not in the office doesn’t mean we’ll see an impact on the company’s product lines. His absence might impact some strategic decisions such as mergers and acquisitions but it’s not like Samsung will be unable to release new smartphones until his trial is over. That shouldn’t even be a concern.

2017 is the year in which those who use Samsung products and those who are fans of the company should really be proud of this Korean behemoth. It has got off to a good start in 2017. Just a couple of days ago the company launched the Galaxy Tab S3 which appears to be one of the best Android 7.0 Nougat tablets revealed so far as well as the Windows 10-powered Galaxy Book tablets that are blazing a new path in the Windows 10 tablet market. That’s not all, the company has also made its virtual reality offering better and is on course to launch what might be one of the best smartphones of this year.

Samsung has gradually been teasing the Galaxy S8 over the past few months. It has revealed that the smartphone will have an artificial intelligence-powered virtual assistant, will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 processor and has even dropped some hints about the new flagship’s design in its Galaxy S8 teaser which confirms that it will be launched on March 29. However, what makes 2017 truly stand out for Samsung is not an evolutionary update for its flagship series, but what it has done to bring about change in the wider smartphone market.

There’s a consensus among financial analysts and the rumor mill that Apple is finally going to make the shift to OLED displays with the iPhone 8. Samsung smartphones have had OLED displays for several years now. The conglomerate has a virtual monopoly on mobile OLED panels which is why it’s going to be the main supplier of OLED displays for Apple’s iPhone. The Cupertino company held out for as long as it possibly could but appears to have decided that it needs to make the switch or it risks losing customers who are increasingly becoming aware of the subtle differences in technologies, thanks partly to countless websites and YouTube channels that happily dissect and compare the differences. Apple is even expected to push the envelope on the design by opting for a curved display and 2017 might be the year when the iPhone 8 finally gets wireless charging. Again, Samsung users have had these features for a couple of years.

This certainly doesn’t mean that die-hard Samsung fans should hate on Apple for doing pretty much what it has almost always accused Samsung of doing: copying. They should rather take it as something they should be proud of. Samsung tried hard to be ahead of the curve two years ago when it started to really innovate and show that its flagship smartphones didn’t need to exist under the iPhone’s shadow, that they could carve their own niche and establish themselves as true competitors to one of the best-selling smartphones on the planet. If you look at what Samsung and Apple have done with their flagship lines over the past two years, you’ll find that the former did far more than the latter. Some might even say that Apple got complacent and started resting on its laurels so it’s finally getting out of that funk in 2017 with the iPhone 8. That argument could be made and it’s yet another reason why Samsung users and fans should be proud of the company.

Samsung has worked really hard over the past couple of years to shed the label of being a company that just copies what Apple is doing. It has shown the world that it’s very capable of matching Apple in terms of smartphone design and build quality. The advancements that it has made may very well have pushed Apple to rethink how it competes in the flagship smartphone market with the iPhone. It would certainly be a pretty big deal if an Asian company like Samsung was able to inspire change in an American company like Apple that has a long history of being regarded as one of the most forward-thinking and innovative companies on the planet. Not to mention the fact that Samsung would have ended up inspiring one of its biggest rivals because despite the onslaught of Chinese competitors, Samsung and Apple remain the top two smartphone vendors in the world.

Samsung may not be the best when it comes to software, its smartphones run on Google’s Android with some tweaks made by the company, while Apple has its own iOS operating system that’s exceptional in more ways than one. We’ve even seen improvement on that front as the company has done away with its clunky interface in favor of one that’s more simple, modern and smooth. Nevertheless, it doesn’t take away from the fact that Samsung is now one of the best companies as far as innovation and mobile hardware is concerned. For example, just a few years ago, even the cameras on Samsung’s flagship smartphones were not as good as they should have been. Samsung considerably improved this since 2015 and no wonder the Galaxy S7 edge is regarded as having one of the best mobile cameras even after a year in which Apple introduced a fancy camera system with the iPhone 7 Plus. It’s also one big reason why the Galaxy S7 edge was recently recognized as the best smartphone at Mobile World Congress 2017 despite the fact that it came out a year ago.

The Galaxy S8 will certainly not be the end of the journey of innovation that Samsung has been on since the past few years. It’s a glimpse of an exciting future. It inspires confidence in Samsung and its ability to innovate and push the boundaries with each generation. It will be a testament to all of the hard work that Samsung has done, hard work that users and fans alike should be very proud of.

2017 will be the year of Samsung, and it’s just getting started.

Samsung reportedly acquired Viv Labs for around $215 million

Back in October 2016, Samsung announced that it had acquired artificial intelligence startup Viv Labs. Unfortunately, at the time, the financial terms of the deal weren’t revealed. The firm has now, however, disclosed that it inked the contract for an eye-watering 238.93 million won on Friday, October 8, when the Korean won was equal to $0.0009 — so it paid roughly $215 million.

As noted by VentureBeat, since being taken over by Samsung Research America, Viv Labs has generated a loss of $3.08 million. That’s bad news, especially when you take into account that the startup received $30 million in funding shortly after being acquired. At present, it’s unclear how Samsung plans to use the Viv technology, which can surface information based on voice input, like Siri.

It was previously reported that the South Korean company would bake Viv into its next flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8, but the slew of leaks surrounding its in-house virtual assistant Bixby launching on the handset appears to shun that theory. We’d be foolish to rule out that Samsung may have only acquired Viv Labs to analyze the technology it uses, in order to make its own AI stronger.
