Galaxy S20 One UI 3.0 public beta rolling out in the US

Samsung started rolling out the One UI 3.0 public beta update to the Galaxy S20 series in South Korea yesterday. Today, the company has extended the availability of the Android 11-based update to the US. For now, the update seems to be limited to T-Mobile users with the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, or the Galaxy S20 Ultra. However, a wider rollout can be expected in a few hours.

One UI 3.0 was originally announced two months ago, but it was only limited to registered developers in South Korea and the US. Apart from Android 11, the update brings a lot of changes and improvements in the UI design. It also brings various new features, and you can have a look at the complete changelog here. We also posted screenshots of all the important aspects of the One UI 3.0 update in our previous article.

The update for the Galaxy S20 Ultra comes with firmware version G988USQU1ZTJ3 and has a download size of over 2GB. It also comes with the latest security patch (October 2020). If you want to test the public beta version of One UI 3.0 on your Galaxy S20 series device, you have to get enrolled in the program via the Samsung Members app and wait for the update to arrive.

Samsung will soon release the One UI 3.0 public beta to testers in China, Germany, India, Poland, and the United Kingdom. So, if you’re from those markets, expect the update to arrive soon. We expect the company to release the final version of One UI 3.0 by the end of 2020 or early next year.

Snapdragon 875 will be announced in December, could power Galaxy S21

The Snapdragon 875 chipset, which will probably be used in the Galaxy S21 series, will be announced in December. Qualcomm has started sending press invites for the online-only event that will be conducted from December 1 to December 2.

While Qualcomm hasn’t exactly confirmed that it would launch the Snapdragon 875 chipset during the event, the company reveals its flagship mobile chipset in December during the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit in Hawaii. And this year should be no different, except that the event will be online-only due to the ongoing pandemic, the necessary social distancing norms, and travel restrictions.

The Snapdragon 875 chipset is expected to be a 5nm chipset that uses one Cortex-X1 CPU core, three Cortex-A78 CPU cores, four Cortex-A55 CPU cores, and the integrated Snapdragon X60 5G modem. Apart from the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the chipset will likely be used in flagship smartphones from other brands, including OnePlus, OPPO, Realme, Vivo, and Xiaomi. During the event, Qualcomm might also unveil the Snapdragon 775G premium mid-range chipset. To remind you, the new Snapdragon 875, Snapdragon 875G, Snapdragon 775G, and Snapdragon 735G chipsets are expected to be fabricated by Samsung Foundry.

Samsung will also unveil its own flagship chipset, the 5nm Exynos 1000 (or the Exynos 2100), sometime early next year. Some rumors claim that the upcoming Exynos chipset lacks the Cortex-X1 CPU core, while others claim of it having the newest ARM core. Only time will tell if it would be able to match the performance of the Snapdragon 875.

Best Galaxy Note 20 cases for your flat screen S Pen flagship

Even though the Galaxy Note 20‘s polycarbonate (plastic) back may not be as susceptible to damage as a glass panel, it’s still a $1,000 device and you’d not want to take any chances with it. If you find yourself worrying about keeping the device safe, perhaps it’s time to buy one of these best Galaxy Note 20 cases.

Smartphone cases come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. You can get anything from a basic clear case to one decked out in premium leather. Both Samsung and accessory makers sell some good Galaxy Note 20 cases so there’s an abundance of options to choose from.

Best Galaxy Note 20 cases to buy in 2020

You might feel that the best cases for Galaxy Note 20 are the simple clear covers that offer protection while also letting you appreciate the device’s gorgeous color. Others may prefer rugged cases that add more durability to the device. It all comes down to personal preferences and this list contains something for everyone.

1. Samsung Leather Back Cover for Galaxy Note 20

This is one of the best leather cases for the Galaxy Note 20. Made by Samsung, it offers protection against scratches and drops without sacrificing the phone’s exterior design or thin profile. It’s incredibly stylish, fits the design of the Galaxy Note 20 perfectly, and it’s available in black, brown, and green mint colors.

Buy for $49.99 at Amazon

2. Vapesoon Waterproof Case with built-in screen protector

The Vapesoon Waterproof Case for the Galaxy Note 20 has an IP68 rating and offers 360-degree protection and shock resistance. It’s MIL-STD-810G-516-compliant and was tested for drops from heights of up to 2 meters. The built-in screen protector offers an additional layer of protection for the device’s 6.7-inch display. Despite its heft, the case supports wireless charging as well.

Buy for $19.99 at Amazon

3. Spigen Ultra Hybrid Crystal case

If the Vapesoon Waterproof Case offers maximum protection at the cost of your phone’s slick profile, the Spigen Ultra Hybrid Crystal case is at the opposite end of the spectrum as it aims to improve your phone’s resilience without covering its design. It’s one of the best clear cases for the Galaxy Note 20. Made from TPU and polycarbonate; it has raised bezels designed to lift the screen and camera off flat surfaces, and it’s available in clear, gray, or matte black colors.

Buy for $11.99 at Amazon

4. Bentoben Galaxy Note 20 wallet case

This is another great option for those who like using leather cases that double as wallets. The Bentoben Galaxy Note 20 Wallet Case is a genuine leather, heavy duty protective case equipped with a kickstand, three credit card slots, and a cash holder pocket. It features wireless charging and exquisite tactile buttons that promise a clicky and responsive touch experience.

Buy for $16.99 at Amazon

5. OtterBox Defender Series case for Galaxy Note 20

The OtterBox Defender Series Screenless Edition for the Galaxy Note 20 is the more expensive item on this list but it justifies this with a rugged build featuring a solid inner shell and soft outer cover. The case is equipped with port covers to protect against dust and debris, and it has a belt-clip holster that can be used as a kickstand.

Buy for $42.65 at Amazon

6. Spigen Tough Armor case

The second Spigen product on this list is the Tough Armor case. Like the Ultra Hybrid Crystal case, it was built from a combination of TPU and polycarbonate. However, it takes advantage of Air Cushion Technology which certifies it for MIL-STD 810G-516.6 protection, and it has its own reinforced kickstand, making it a rugged case for Galaxy Note 20 that’s worth your money It’s available in black, bronze, green, and gunmetal colors.

Buy for $15.99 at Amazon

7. Ghostek Exec Wallet case

The Ghostek Exect Wallet case is a bit of a jack-of-all-trades. It was manufactured from a combination of materials including leather, TPU, and polycarbonate, and it promises military-grade protection against drops. The built-in magnet for easy in-car mounting and the detachable leather credit card holder set this product apart from its competitors. The case also supports wireless charging but only as long as the cardholder is detached.

Buy for $29.98 at Amazon

Picking the best Galaxy Note 20 case

It’s both difficult and unwise to recommend a single case to everyone, for obvious reasons. Depending on your lifestyle, you might need a more or less rugged case for your Galaxy Note 20, not to mention that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Or you might find it more convenient to buy multiple cases and switch between them depending on your use cases.

Whatever the case may be – no pun intended – the most important detail to keep in mind is that Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra cases are not interchangeable. The latter model is considerably larger so its cases won’t fit the standard model or vice versa. Make sure that you order the right product for your smartphone before pushing your virtual cart through checkout. And if you’re in the market for a Galaxy Note 20 Ultra case then you can refer to our previous guide for a handful of popular options.

Bye bye exclusivity? Good Lock app now available in more markets

Samsung’s high-octane Good Lock customization app is finally reaching more markets. The company hasn’t made any official announcement on the matter just yet but we were able to confirm with help from our colleagues at GalaxyClub that Good Lock is now available for download from the Galaxy Store in a handful of European countries. As of this writing, we are able to confirm that the app is available in Germany, Netherlands, and Switzerland. Other European countries might be included.

Good Lock was released all the way back in 2016 as a somewhat experimental UI customization app, or rather a platform that allows for experimental ideas to take place in the form of simple addons, i.e., Good Lock ‘modules.’ But even four years after its debut, ask around and you’ll find countless Galaxy smartphone owners who have never used it, not by choice but by chance.

This is because Good Lock was released in limited key regions and it continues to elude a lot of markets. We’ve asked Samsung to bring Good Lock to more customers worldwide on several occasions before, especially since the customization options it brings are completely optional, and it looks like the company is finally ready to make the move and introduce Good Lock to more regions.

Get ready to make One UI your own

Good Lock can be downloaded on your smartphone from the Galaxy Store but keep in mind that the app isn’t very useful on its own. Instead, it allows you to install additional apps or Good Lock ‘modules’ with which you can personalize your smartphone to greater extents. Here are a few examples of Good Lock modules that you may be able to find and install in Europe through the Galaxy Store as well as through our APK archive:

  • Wonderland: A module that lets you create custom live wallpapers.
  • Pentastic: A redesigned Air Command menu for the S Pen.
  • One Hand Operation+: An alternative to One-handed mode.
  • NavStar: An app that lets you create and customize your navigation bar.
  • Edge Lighting+: An app that brings you additional options for the edge lighting effect.

It doesn’t look as if Good Lock is available across the entire European continent and only time will tell when the app will reach more markets. Of course, there’s also the possibility that Samsung may have accidentally released Good Lock in Europe, making this a less-permanent change. But such accidental leaks don’t take place often and they usually happen through a single Samsung portal, not many.

If we were to guess, Samsung is preparing to release Good Lock in more markets and a few select European countries have been chosen for a pilot run across The Old Continent. We may hear more news on the matter soon so stay tuned. Until then, make sure to check the Galaxy Store in your country and see if Good Lock is now available in your region.

Will my Samsung Galaxy device get Android 11 and One UI 3.0?

For Samsung, a manufacturer that launches an almost obscene amount of smartphones each year, bringing new Android versions to its customers is a daunting affair. Having so many devices means Samsung needs a lot of time in order to bring one major Android update to each and every one of them. Before the company gets around to completing that task, Google announces — and sometimes releases — the next version of Android, and the cycle continues.

This year is no different. Android 10 has yet to reach all Galaxy smartphones and tablets that are eligible for the update, and people are already talking about Android 11. Android 11 will most likely be accompanied by One UI 3.0, and while we don’t currently know what features Samsung will offer on top of what will be built into stock Android 11, we can tell you if the next version of Android will come to your Galaxy smartphone or tablet.

Samsung Galaxy devices eligible for Android 11 update

The devices listed below are currently expected to get Android 11. The list is based on Samsung’s policy of providing two major Android upgrades to all of its devices and three major upgrades for flagship and select mid-range devices, which means your device will probably get Android 11 if it came with Android 9 Pie or Android 10 out of the box.

Breaking: Samsung One UI 3.0 Android 11 public beta is now live!

It’s finally here. Samsung has released its One UI 3.0 Android 11 beta for the general public. The company previously opened up a One UI 3.0 beta for developers in the United States and South Korea. It only made the beta firmware available for Galaxy S20 series handsets initially.

Samsung fans who are not developers can finally get in on the action today. The One UI 3.0 beta is open for Galaxy S20 users in South Korea. It goes without saying that the Galaxy Note 20 series will be included as well, but it may take a few days for that to happen. The Galaxy S20 FE is not included in the beta, for those wondering, though we hope this will change at some point.

Samsung decides to use Chinese batteries in the Galaxy S21 series

Samsung tends to source batteries for its flagship smartphones from multiple suppliers in addition to group company Samsung SDI. It’s now looking towards China for the batteries that will go inside its next flagships, tentatively named Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+ and Galaxy S21 Ultra.

The company will reportedly be sourcing the batteries from Amperex Technology Limited. Samsung SDI will also be in the supplier mix for these batteries. This isn’t the first time that the company will be buying batteries from Amperex.

Amperex to supply batteries for the Galaxy S21 series

Samsung has previously sourced batteries from Amperex for budget devices in the Galaxy A and Galaxy M series. Amperex has also provided batteries for some flagships like the Galaxy S9 series. Amperex Technology Limited is a highly regarded manufacturer of small pouch-type batteries that are used in mobile devices. Its market share in 2019 was 17.1 percent, ranking third after Samsung SDI and LG Chem at 28.4 percent and 19.5 percent respectively.

This is likely a cost reduction measure on Samsung’s part in a bid to increase margins on its next flagship lineup. Ampere is said to provide batteries for all three Galaxy S21 models. Earlier reports have suggested that the Galaxy S21, S21+ and S21 Ultra will feature 4,000mAh, 4,800mAh and 5,000mAh batteries. Only the Galaxy S21+ will get a minor increase while the other models will have the exact same capacities as their predecessors.

The production certifications that previously revealed the battery capacities for the Galaxy S21 series also listed Amperex as the manufacturer. How Samsung will split the orders between the different suppliers remains a mystery. It will likely depend on a lot of different factors. It won’t matter which company supplied the battery that’s inside of your Galaxy S21 because it’s really not going to make any difference.

How to pick the best Galaxy S20 FE case

Don’t forget that the Galaxy S20 FE is one of four different Galaxy S20 models that Samsung has launched in 2020. Be sure to buy the case that’s confirmed to fit the device. You won’t be able to muscle a Galaxy S20+ case on it, for example.

A clear case will work best if you just want to add protection to the device and not hide its color. Samsung monthly updates: October 2020 security patch detailed

Samsung has released an official changelog detailing the many vulnerabilities that have been fixed in the October 2020 security patch. The October security patch has already reached a handful of Galaxy phones, including all of Samsung’s 2019 and 2020 flagships, and more devices are expected to make the jump to the latest patch in the coming weeks.

New firmware that bring the October patch to these devices will be available for download from SamMobile’s archives once they go live in different markets. You will also find coverage of the October security update for popular Galaxy phones and tablets on our homepage. As usual, you can manually check if there’s an update for your device by opening its Settings app and heading into the Software update menu.

21 Samsung-exclusive vulnerabilities fixed in October patch

The October security patch fixes five critical-risk vulnerabilities found in the Android OS, along with dozens of moderate and high-risk vulnerabilities. It also fixes 21 vulnerabilities discovered in Samsung’s software. One of those exploits allowed unauthorized access to the SD card and contents in the user’s Secure Folder, while another enabled access to sensitive data through the Auto Hotspot feature. Information on some vulnerabilities has not been disclosed, which is standard practice in order to prevent exploitation before the necessary fixes have reached all eligible devices.

Samsung drops Galaxy Note 8 to quarterly software update schedule

It has been more than three years since the Galaxy Note 8 was launched, and Samsung has now dropped its security software update schedule from monthly to quarterly. The company had done the same with the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ a few months ago.

Usually, Samsung releases monthly software updates and security patches for its high-end smartphones for three years and then provides quarterly updates for another year. That’s four years of regular software updates, longer than any other Android smartphone OEM in the industry. Sometimes, the South Korean smartphone giant releases critical security patches to even older devices.

If you have a Galaxy Note 8, you should expect it to receive security patches every few months until October 2021. If you are using a Galaxy S9 series device or a Galaxy Note 9, you’ll get another year of monthly security updates. Galaxy S10 series and Galaxy Note 10 series phones will get two years of monthly updates. Even its enterprise devices will receive monthly updates.

Recently, Samsung had announced that it would offer three major Android updates for its high-end devices in the Galaxy Note, Galaxy S, and Galaxy Z series.
