Galaxy Note 9 S Pen features may include music playback control

We have seen multiple reports over the past couple of weeks about the Galaxy Note 9 S Pen features, one even suggested that the stylus is going to receive its “biggest update ever” for Samsung’s new flagship smartphone.

There is enough circumstantial evidence to suggest that the S Pen will figure prominently in Samsung’s Galaxy Note 9 announcement. The first Galaxy Note 9 teaser from Samsung particularly focuses on the S Pen which suggests that there might be some truth to these reports after all.

Galaxy Note 9 S Pen features

Ice Universe, the China-based source who leaks stuff on social media, has made some claims today regarding the Galaxy Note 9 S Pen features. It’s pertinent to mention here that this source has been right on multiple occasions in the past.

A crude machine translation of his Weibo post reveals that the Galaxy Note 9 S Pen will essentially be a portable Bluetooth controller. Since it would have Bluetooth support, the S Pen button could ostensibly be used for triggering a long-range remote self-timer and for controlling music playback.

A similar claim was also posted on Twitter by the same source in which it’s said that since the S Pen has Bluetooth support, it will have a feature that one wouldn’t expect from a stylus. It may offer some gameplay features but that’s just speculation at this point in time. There are rumors that the S Pen might even double as a Bluetooth speaker but then that would require a battery to be built into the stylus which would make it thicker.

This isn’t the first time that we’re hearing about Bluetooth support for the S Pen. It’s also mentioned in the early Galaxy Note 9 hands-on that the S Pen supports Bluetooth and brings some new software features.

Samsung has obviously confirmed nothing about this so far and we can’t really expect it to given that we’re just over a month away from the official Galaxy Note 9 announcement on August 9.

Samsung confirms Galaxy A6 UK launch for the summer

Samsung officially unveiled the Galaxy A6 back in May and the company is now gradually launching the device in markets across the globe. The handset has been launched in India already while Samsung announced its release in South Korea just a few days ago. The company has now also confirmed the Galaxy A6 UK launch which will take place this summer.

Unfortunately, it’s not being precise at the moment. Samsung hasn’t confirmed precisely when the Galaxy A6 will be released in the United Kingdom and which of its carrier and retail partners will be selling the device.

Galaxy A6 UK launch

Samsung has sent out a press release confirming that the Galaxy A6 will “launch this summer” in the United Kingdom with selected partners. Customers will be able to purchase the device in Black, Gold and Lavender colors.

Galaxy Note 9 China release secured with 3C certification

Samsung has confirmed that it’s going to unveil the Galaxy Note 9 on August 9. The new flagship handset is now racking up the required certifications across the globe which are required before the device can be released in major markets. Samsung has now secured the Galaxy Note 9 China release as the device has picked up its 3C certification.

The 3C certification is necessary for handsets that are to be sold in China. The People’s Republic is one of the most lucrative smartphone markets on the planet and one where Samsung has promised to do better. The Federal Communications Commission of the United States has already certified the Galaxy Note 9.

Galaxy Note 9 China release

The Galaxy Note 9 model number SM-N9608 has been certified by the agency. The listing mentions that the device supports power input of 9V DC/1.67A or 5V DC/2A with fast wireless charging. It has support for the country’s TD-LTE bands.

The listing doesn’t reveal any further information about the device but we know from an early hands-on that it doesn’t look all that different compared to the Galaxy Note 8. The Exynos 9810/Snapdragon 845 chips do deliver generational performance gains and the 4,000mAh battery is said to be good for up to 25 hours of nonstop video playback.

Samsung is expected to introduce an 8GB RAM + 512GB internal storage configuration for the Galaxy Note 9 in select markets and it’s possible that China might be one of the markets where it sells the model. It has also been said that the base model will now feature 6GB of RAM with 128GB of storage.

The company is yet to confirm pricing and release date information for the Galaxy Note 9. We’ll find that out on August 9 when it officially unveils the Galaxy Note 9.

Galaxy X display may only fold two-thirds of the way

We have known for a while now that Samsung is working on a foldable smartphone, the device that the rumor mill refers to as the Galaxy X, and recent reports suggest that the company may launch it at the Mobile World Congress next year. The company was expected to begin production of the foldable display panels later this year and a new report out of South Korea suggests that the company will begin trial production of its foldable OLED panels for the Galaxy X this summer.

The report also details that the folding mechanism for the Galaxy X is yet to be locked down. The patents that have emerged so far have detailed a device that folds in half but if that’s the case, users will have to unfold the device for even minor tasks such as checking the time. It’s thus claimed that the Galaxy X display may only fold two-thirds of the way to leave the top part exposed for information such as the time, battery percentage, notifications and more.

Galaxy X display

Samsung is reportedly going to build a pilot production line for its foldable OLED display in South Korea over the summer. It will then sort out any issues that come up on the pilot line before starting full-scale production of the foldable panel by the end of this year. The initial production capacity may be 100,000 units with Samsung aiming to produce one million units of the foldable OLED display by next year.

The panel size is said to be 7-inches when folded out. The device itself may be inward-folding with the display only folding two-thirds of the way up so that users don’t have to unfold the device whenever they want to check the screen. This may also eliminate the need to unfold the display every single time the user wants to pick up an incoming call.

Samsung is tightlipped on the details about its foldable smartphone so there has been no confirmation from the company about any of this so far. We can surely expect to hear more reports and rumors about the Galaxy X in the months to come.
