T-Mobile rolls out update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ to fix frustrating red tint issue

Good news for folk with a T-Mobile variant of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in the United States: the handsets are now receiving a much-requested maintenance update to patch a bug that resulted in some users noticing a “reddish tint” on their handset’s display.

The upgrade appears to be identical to the one that started making the rounds in Europe and South Korea last week, bundling a couple of new settings for the Adaptive Display screen mode, which lets users adjust the color balance of the panel and the appearance of white tones on the edges.

If you own a Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+, you should be able to install the over-the-air update right away by heading into Settings, followed by Software Update, then tap the Download Updates Manually button. Alternatively, you can wait until you receive an alert prompting you to install the upgrade.

The Galaxy Note 8 may not be the first Samsung smartphone to sport a dual-camera setup

The Galaxy Note 8 may not be Samsung’s first smartphone to sport a dual-camera configuration. Well, at least that’s what a reliable tipster claims. Unfortunately, the source didn’t provide any details about what device the new setup will debut on, though there’s a chance it’ll be on board the long-rumored Galaxy X.

Internally codenamed Project Valley, the Galaxy X is believed to be the firm’s upcoming flagship with a foldable display. Information surrounding the handset is sparse, but recent rumors point towards it featuring a 5-inch display that can fold out, transforming the handset into a 7-inch tablet.

Daily Deal: Save 57% on a pair of Active InEar headphones

You can currently snag yourself a pair of Samsung’s InEar headphones for just $12.92. For the record, these are the same earphones that ship in the box of the firm’s latest smartphones, with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ an exception as they come bundled with a pair manufactured by AKG.

As is always the case with our Daily Deals, if you want to take advantage of this particular promotion, hit the Buy Now button below. We’d advise you to hurry, though. Amazon only has a limited amount of inventory available and it probably won’t be around for too long.

Samsung showcases Bixby Voice’s prowess in five new videos

Bixby, Samsung’s AI-powered digital voice assistant, was one of the most talked about features during the announcement of the Galaxy S8 and S8+. The company made tall claims that any action that can be accomplished by touching a smartphone’s display can also be performed using Bixby’s voice recognition capabilities. However, the feature wasn’t ready in time for the Galaxy S8′s launch.

Samsung announced the launch of Bixby Voice in Korea yesterday. Now, the company has published five new videos on its YouTube channel that showcase Bixby Voice’s prowess. Although these videos are in Korean, we can clearly see that the dedicated Bixby button on the Galaxy S8 and S8+ can be pressed once to launch the voice assistant and dictate various commands.

The first video shows how Bixby Voice can be used to launch the gallery app, find images (matching a user’s criteria), and rotate or stylize images. Users can also like or selecting multiple images, share images with friends, or even set an image as a wallpaper. Bixby can also be used to launch the camera, change camera modes, or alter various camera settings.

Other videos show how to compose messages, insert smileys, reply to messages, and more using Bixby Voice. It can also change various device settings such as volume and display. Users can also set and delete reminders or translate text from one language to another using Bixby Vision. Users can also find and play music, check health statistics through Samsung Health, or see shopping offers from Samsung Pay.

The feature isn’t available out of Korea as of now, but you can still go ahead and check out all the videos to see what Bixby Voice can do.

Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ pre-orders in India are starting to ship today

India is among the few markets where Samsung delayed availability of its new flagships, the Galaxy S8 and S8+, by a week. Sales of the device are set to commence on May 5 in the country, and Samsung has started shipping pre-ordered devices out to consumers today. Some consumers might get their order today itself (I did), if they were among the first few to order the phone from Samsung’s official website.

Some retailers are also handing out devices today; if you haven’t gotten yours by the end of the day, you can expect to see your brand new Galaxy S8 or S8+ arrive before the week is over. If you haven’t ordered the phone yet, it would be a good idea to do so before May 5, as that is when Samsung’s pre-order offer of a free wireless charger will end. The offer is available from various retailers, including Flipkart and Croma, so you have a few options.

If you haven’t made up your mind about the Galaxy S8 or S8+ yet, make sure to read our review of the handsets. We’ve also embedded our video review below.

Hey Samsung, Indian Galaxy S8 users really should have a way to quick launch the camera

Samsung has always been accused of throwing in everything but the kitchen sink into its phones as far as software features are concerned. Some of these features are useful, while some are fun for a little while before you forget they even exist. Falling in the former camp is the camera quick launch shortcut that Samsung introduced with the Galaxy S6, one that lets you press the home button two times to launch the camera at any moment.

With the Galaxy S8, this feature has been relegated to the power button, but as Indian users will soon find out as they get their hands on their shiny new Samsung flagship, the quick launch camera feature isn’t present on the Indian models. Samsung tells us this is because the Indian government requires a smartphone to dial emergency services on three presses of the power button, and the camera launch feature would have clashed with this regulation as users might press the power button three times by mistake.

Samsung isn’t wrong here, as it’s not hard to put in an extra press sometimes when you’re trying to launch the camera in a hurry. But it’s hard to fathom that Indian users will have to live without the ability to quickly launch the camera, especially if they’re coming from an existing Samsung device with the same feature. It works just so well that you would think Samsung would have built in an alternative for Indian users instead of ripping out the feature entirely for consumers in India.

It’s not hard to think of such alternatives. Putting in the camera shortcut with a warning that it might overlap the emergency shortcut would be the logical step. If not that, maybe Samsung could give us the ability to remap the Bixby button. That puts Bixby at risk of being overridden, but is that really an issue for a service that will take a few months to be fully functional in the country? Putting the shortcut on the volume buttons is another alternative, although that might cause issues when you’re playing media and want to control the volume levels of the device.

None of these alternatives work as simply as having the power button do the job, but it’s disheartening to see that Indian users will have to wake up their phones and launch the camera manually. It will feel almost like a maneuver from the stone age for regular users of Samsung’s Galaxy phones, and we urge Samsung to come up with a solution that can be the middle ground between letting users fire up the camera quickly and being able to dial emergency services when the need arises.
