New Galaxy S9 update brings November 2019 security patch

Samsung has released a new update for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ in a few Asian countries, including Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. The update bundles the November 2019 security patch and comes with software version G960FXXS7CSJ3 for the Galaxy S9 and G965FXXS7CSJ3 for the Galaxy S9+.

The November update for the Galaxy S9/S9+ comes at the same time that Samsung has detailed the November 2019 security patch, and that may not be a coincidence. The November patch fixes a vulnerability that affects, among other devices from both Samsung and other manufacturers, the Galaxy S9. This particular vulnerability was expected to be fixed in the October security patch, but that wasn’t the case and Samsung has now done the needful with this month’s patch.

The latest Galaxy S9/S9+ update does not bring any new features or changes other than security enhancements and can be downloaded over the air from the device’s Settings » Software update menu. As always, you can also find the latest firmware in our firmware database (S9 | S9+)and use it to upgrade your phone using a Windows PC. Do let us know if the update is available for your Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+ by leaving a comment below.

Samsung monthly updates: November 2019 security patch detailed

It’s a new month, and that means it’s time for a new Android security patch. The November 2019 security patch has now been detailed by both Google and Samsung. The November patch comes with fixes for nine critical vulnerabilities that affect the Android OS, along with fixes for 39 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items, which are vulnerabilities that only affect Samsung’s software. The November security update has already been released for some Galaxy devices and will be released for more devices in the coming weeks.

The November 2019 security patch for Galaxy devices includes a fix for a bug (CVE-2019-2215) in the Android OS that was discovered in September and found to have been exploited by cyber-attackers. The Galaxy S7, Galaxy S8, and Galaxy S9 were singled out in the list of Android devices affected by the bug, and while Google fixed the vulnerability in the October patch for Pixel devices, Samsung’s version of the October patch did not include such a fix. The Korean giant has changed that with the November security patch.

As noted earlier, the November security update has already been released for some Galaxy devices, such as the Galaxy S10, Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy Tab S4, and Galaxy A50. Samsung has been moving quickly with security updates in recent months, and we can assume the November update will also make its way to more Galaxy devices in the next few days. We’ll let you know whenever that happens, and you can also do the same if you have received the November security update on your phone or tablet by leaving a comment down below.

Samsung layoffs reportedly continue in China as 11 branches merge into 5

A new report blew up in the Chinese media earlier today, suggesting that Samsung has decided to take further drastic actions to try and improve its situation in the Far Eastern country. The company is reportedly restructuring its offices in China and has laid off a third of its staff, according to Pandaily citing Tencent and anonymous sources.

Samsung is going to merge its existing eleven branches and offices into five, claims the report. The company reportedly issued a declaration on the matter, which was later passed along on the Chinese social media network Weibo. It states that ‘Samsung Electronics has adjusted its business to drive rapid growth in China’s 5G market in response to uncertainty in the internal and external business environment and a highly competitive market environment.

Samsung continues rethinking its position in China

Samsung isn’t giving up on the Chinese market entirely, and the official announcement might even make it sound like the company is making this move as a way to expand. That may very well be the case, but clearly, it’s not a good sign for Samsung to have to diminish its workforce in China in order to remain competitive.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. It’s not the first time we hear of Samsung China taking drastic measures to stop its decline. A few months ago Samsung shut down its last smartphone manufacturing plant in China because it was no longer profitable. The company is seemingly gravitating towards ODM contracts (seemingly at the cost of putting its suppliers in a difficult spot). With less effort put into manufacturing devices in its own factories in China, it makes a certain amount of sense for Samsung to need fewer offices and employees as well. If anything, this bit of recent news further strengthens the idea that Samsung’s mobile business in China is probably going to depend a lot on ODM devices in the coming years.

With production moving to other countries and some Galaxy smartphone models becoming ODM devices created in by third parties, it’s going to be interesting to see if Samsung will finally be able to climb up the ranks in China and go back to hiring employees rather than diminishing its workforce in the country. 2020 is going to be the year of 5G, and it might become a decisive year for Samsung China.

[Poll] What’s your opinion of One UI 2.0? Do you like what you see?

November 7 will mark the first anniversary One UI, the modern and intuitive user interface that can be found on all Galaxy smartphones and tablets running Android Pie and on Samsung’s latest wearables. It brought a major overhaul to the look and feel of the software on Samsung devices, along with plenty of new features. Samsung has added new features with minor upgrades to One UI since then, and the latest stable version of One UI is 1.5, as seen on the Galaxy Note 10 and some other new devices launched in the last couple of months.

We had exclusively revealed that Android 10 would be accompanied by version 2.0 of One UI, and many of us have been using One UI 2.0 on our Galaxy S10s and Note 10s thanks to the One UI 2.0 beta program. It brings plenty of improvements to the user interface and adds some new features, and while things may change as the beta program continues, it’s safe to say that One UI 2.0 on the stable version of Android 10 for Galaxy devices will be pretty similar to what you can see on the Android 10 beta.

To those who have been using One UI 2.0 on the Android 10 beta, we pose this question: Do you like what it has to offer? Do you feel One UI 2.0 makes enough changes to warrant all the anticipation, or were you expecting it to be a bigger update as far as all the improvements and new features are concerned? Vote in the poll below, then take to the comments section to discuss what you like or don’t like about One UI 2.0 in more detail.

Samsung AI Forum kicks off with a powerful on-device AI translator demo

Samsung AI Forum 2019 kicked off earlier today at the Samsung Electronics R&D campus in Seoul. This year, the event accommodates more than 1,700 attendees and various experts from the field of artificial intelligence who will be discussing deep learning, natural language processing, and other facets of AI.

The event began earlier today with a demonstration of force. The Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) revealed an on-device AI translator solution that doesn’t require cloud connectivity. The so-called SAIT Translator combines speech recognition and machine translation technologies to deliver an on-device AI translator that’s nearly as powerful as Google’s cloud-based solution, according to VP of SAIT, Hwang Sung-woo.

Samsung’s on-device AI translator may or may not launch with the Galaxy S11

The SAIT Translator was demonstrated on a Galaxy S10 that was disconnected from the Internet. The system overcame this challenge without any difficulties, and the AI began translating and transcribing full spoken sentences into text in real-time, from Korean to English.

Translating text and voice from one language to another using a smartphone in this day and age poses no problem, as long as the phone is connected to the Internet. Once you’re offline, however, the story is different. Your Galaxy Note 10 might be equipped with the latest S Pen and comes with a dedicated Translate app among other tools, but it’s not very useful when your phone is offline. The SAIT Translator pushes the idea of AI translation to a whole new level by putting the tech from the cloud directly into the palm of smartphone owners.

It sounds like the SAIT Translator is quite well developed so there might be a chance that it could turn into a real app in the foreseeable future. It may even debut with the Galaxy S11 series next year, but without additional information, this is just wishful thinking at this point. Still, the Galaxy S11 would probably make a great platform for the introduction of new AI-powered solutions, and even if the SAIT Translator won’t become available early next year, it’s still an impressive piece of tech that should eventually reach consumers, one way or another. Earlier this year, Samsung also unveiled its latest on-device NPU solution for better AI, so there’s a real push for making mobile devices smarter without having them rely on the cloud.

New Samsung flip phone (W20 5G) for China may just be a Galaxy Fold

Samsung’s next flip phone for the Chinese market may just end up being a Galaxy Fold with 5G connectivity. Yes, the W20 5G, teasers for which made it seem like it’s a foldable phone, could be the Galaxy Fold 5G, at least if we’re to believe the Wireless Power Consortium. The model number SM-W2020 should technically belong to this year’s version of Samsung’s flip phone series for China, but the WPC has certified it as the Galaxy Fold instead.

You read that right. According to the WPC, the SM-W2020 is called Galaxy Fold, and we think that might actually be the case even though information we received from our sources last week made it more plausible that the W20 5G is just a regular flip phone. After all, the clamshell phones that Samsung has been launching in China (and South Korea) these past few years have been flagship devices with price tags reaching the $2000 mark. And with the Galaxy Fold also priced at $1,980, it would make sense for Samsung to replace the flip phone series for China with the Galaxy Fold.

It’s also possible the W20 5G is just a Galaxy Fold that’s been rebranded for China Telecom, one of the country’s three major carriers. China’s first 5G networks were launched last week, and China Telecom may have gained exclusive rights on the Galaxy Fold 5G, which explains why it’s the only carrier that has teased the W20 5G. However, we don’t see why Samsung would switch the model number for the Galaxy Fold 5G for just one carrier and market.

The LTE variant of the Galaxy Fold for China sports model number SM-F9000 and is set to go on sale in the country on November 8. The global unlocked Fold carries model number SM-F900F for the LTE variant and SM-F907F/B for the 5G variant, so the Chinese 5G variant would traditionally have to be the SM-F9070. It’s all pretty confusing, if we’re being honest, and we should probably just wait until the W20 5G’s official launch to see if it’s a new foldable phone, a new flip phone in an existing lineup, or a rebranded Galaxy Fold 5G.

Galaxy Note 10’s PC game streaming app now works with the Galaxy S10

PlayGalaxy Link, the game streaming app that lets Galaxy Note 10 owners play PC games on their phone over a mobile or Wi-Fi connection, now supports the Galaxy S10 series. Version 1.0.5 of the PlayGalaxy Link app, which is currently in beta, has been released with support for the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, and Galaxy S10 5G and a few other changes, as seen in the screenshot below.

However, the app still seems to be limited to a few markets. It was initially launched in the US and South Korea, followed by Australia, Canada, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, Singapore, and the UK, and Samsung doesn’t seem to have expanded that list yet. Thankfully, PlayGalaxy Link isn’t necessary for Galaxy S10 owners and owners of other Galaxy smartphones in order to stream their PC games to their phone.

That’s because PlayGalaxy Link is based on the Parsec streaming service, and Parsec is freely available for all Android devices. And since Parsec runs pretty well despite being beta software, we’re not sure what is stopping Samsung from making PlayGalaxy Link more widely available. We can only hope the company will do that eventually instead of keeping the app artificially limited to a few countries forever.

Do you use PlayGalaxy Link on your Galaxy Note 10 to stream games from your PC?

Thanks for the tip, Xreever!

Galaxy A51 to have ‘L-shaped’ quad camera setup, reveal leaked images

The Galaxy A51 may come with a quad rear camera setup, according to a leak that purports to show the internals of the device. Published by 91Mobiles, one of the images shows an L-shaped cutout in the top left corner of the device, and the publication believes this cutout will hold four camera sensors. If that is true, the A51 would be the first Galaxy smartphone with its camera sensors placed in such a manner, and the second one to have four rear-facing cameras. The first was the Galaxy A9 (2018) that was launched last year.

And it does seem like the L-shaped cutout could be entirely for the camera, as there’s a separate hole for the LED flash next to the cutout. A dubious leak many months ago had said the Galaxy A51 and A61 would have four rear cameras, and the leaked images suggest that may actually be the case. The same leak had also said the A51 would have a 32MP primary camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, a 12MP telephoto camera for 2x optical zoom, and a 5MP depth-sensing camera. However, whether those megapixel counts are accurate is unclear at this time.

Still, no matter what the camera resolutions may be, a quad camera setup would get the Galaxy A51 plenty of attention. The Galaxy A50 is arguably Samsung’s most popular mid-range phone in 2019, and an extra rear camera could be a good way to make the Galaxy A51 stand out, especially since it’s expected to carry specs similar to the A50/A50s in other departments, such as the underlying chipset and the RAM and storage configurations. Android 10 out of the box would be another highlight, although that is likely to be common to all A series phones Samsung will launch in 2020.

Samsung moving away from custom CPU cores for its Exynos processors

There were reports online last month that Samsung is moving away from designing custom CPU cores for its Exynos processors and has laid off the entire team behind the project at its R&D Center in Austin. The company has now confirmed this news through a WARN letter filed with the Texas Workforce Commission.

According to the letter, which is a regulatory requirement under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act that mandates employers to inform the state governments about major layoffs, Samsung is shutting down the CPU project at its Austin Research Center and will lay off 290 employees effective December 31 as part of the exercise.

The WARN letter also states the layoffs would affect the Advanced Computer Lab in San Jose, California, as well, but it’s unclear how many of the 290 layoffs will that account for. Michele Glaze, a spokesperson for Samsung Austin, told the Statesman that the layoffs will not impact the company’s Austin manufacturing facility that employs around 3,000 people.

“We have treated all employees with respect. They all have been given appropriate packages, and advanced notice. These things are very tough. People always wonder, ‘did they treat them right?’ And we did. It’s unfortunate that they are losing their jobs, but it is based upon the fact that we’re always assessing our business,” the spokesperson added.

To be clear, Samsung hasn’t officially mentioned that it is seizing development of custom CPU cores, but that is the natural conclusion one can draw from this move. It appears the Mongoose M5 Cores in the recently-announced Exynos 990 will be Samsung’s last custom CPU core designs, and that the company will supposedly license ARM designs going forward.

There are also reports that the Korean company will collaborate with ARM for semi-custom cores, but nothing is confirmed yet. Samsung’s move in Austin also doesn’t seem to impact the company’s recent collaboration with AMD for GPU designs.

Curve adds support for Samsung Pay, makes it compatible with all cards

Curve has added support for Samsung Pay in the United Kingdom. Described as an “over-the-top banking platform,” Curve consolidates all of your credit and debit cards into a single Curve card.

Since that Curve card can now be used with Samsung Pay, any and all underlying cards linked to it can thus be used to make payments using Samsung Pay. All users have to do is just register their Curve card in the Samsung Pay app. Once that’s done, they can link any of their other Mastercard and Visa debit cards to Curve.

Curve lets you use all of your debit and credit cards with Samsung Pay

This solution will enable a lot more people to use Samsung Pay. There are still quite a few banks that don’t support Samsung Pay. They prefer to offer NFC-based mobile payments through their own apps instead.

Curve’s primary offering is a smart card that can be connected to users’ bank-issued credit and debit cards through the app. This means that they only have to carry a single card which gives them the power to access and use all of their other cards.

Since Curve has now added support for Samsung Pay, Mastercard and Visa cards from banks that don’t support Samsung Pay themselves can even be used to make payments through this service. Samsung Pay users will make payments through the Curve card like they would with any other card. Simply launch Samsung Pay, select the Curve card and authorize the transaction. All of the underlying cards can be managed through the Curve app.

These are the banks that currently support Samsung Pay in the United Kingdom. If your’s isn’t on the list, Curve is the only option if you’d like to use a card issued by your bank in Samsung Pay. Curve is reportedly planning an expansion into the United States as well.

Galaxy A50 November security update released in Europe and the US

The Galaxy A50 is now receiving an update with the November 2019 security patch. The update is rolling out for the unlocked variant in the US and in more than 20 markets in Europe, including Germany, France, the Netherlands, the UK, Bulgaria, Spain, Hungary, Switzerland, and Poland. The update for the US comes with software version A505U1UES3ASJ3 and the one released in Europe has software version A505FNXXS2ASK1.

The considerably wide rollout of the November update for the Galaxy A50 is quite similar to how the November update was released for the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 in almost every country across the globe in a matter of days. However, it’s just a regular security update with the latest Android security patch for the Galaxy A50. What the latest security patch entails is a mystery for now, but it should only be a matter of time before Google and Samsung detail the November 2019 security patch.

Own a Galaxy A50? You can download the update on your phone from the Settings » Software update menu by tapping the Download and install option. You may have to do that a couple of times before the update starts downloading. You can also upgrade your A50 by flashing the latest firmware on it using a Windows PC. Galaxy A50 firmware can be downloaded from our firmware archive.
