The Bixby button drives me nuts

Hardware buttons have gone out of fashion now. That’s one of the reasons why Samsung’s decision to drop the home button on the Galaxy S8 was well received. The handset should ideally have had three buttons: power and volume up/down. That’s not the case, though.

Samsung introduced a dedicated button for its Bixby voice assistant with the Galaxy S8. It’s present on the Galaxy S8 Active as well, replacing the multifunctional Active key of previous Galaxy S active smartphones. It looks like this will be a permanent fixture on Samsung flagships from now on, as leaked images of the Galaxy Note 8 show the upcoming flagship will have a dedicated Bixby button as well.

The company may also add a dedicated button for the virtual assistant on non-flagship devices. Samsung has made no secret of the fact that it will expand Bixby to more devices. It’s only a matter of time before the company’s premium mid-range smartphones get Bixby, and ultimately some of its budget devices as well.

So what does the Bixby button do? Well, if you’re not in South Korea or the United States, it doesn’t do much. It brings up Bixby Home. That’s the card-based contextual information hub of Samsung’s voice assistant. It’s Bixby without the voice functionality.

If you’re in South Korea or the United States, pressing this button will bring up the voice assistant, ready to do as you command. Samsung says that Bixby can do almost everything in response to a voice command that a user can do manually by interacting with the display.

Samsung hasn’t said when it’s going to expand Bixby Voice to other markets across the globe. While there have been hints that a global launch might be possible, the company is yet to take customers into confidence regarding this.

It has sold millions of units of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ worldwide, handsets that cost over $900 in some markets, and yet they still don’t offer one of the flagship’s biggest selling points.

Simply put, if you’re not located in the supported markets, the Bixby button is useless for you. It bugs me, having a dedicated button on my smartphone and serves no purpose. I also find that it gets in the way and that drives me nuts.

It’s not that difficult to press the Bixby button accidentally when picking up the Galaxy S8, leaving you to mash the virtual home button because you want Bixby Home to go away so that you can do what you were really going to do. You might also press the button by accident when trying to quickly turn the volume down because it’s located below the volume down button.

The Bixby button gets in the way. Whether you’re viewing content for extended periods of time and trying to find a more comfortable position to hold the device or mindlessly picking up the phone when it’s lying on a flat surface, there’s no avoiding the accidental press of the Bixby button.

There’s no way around it. While it was possible to remap the Bixby button initially, Samsung has made it harder to do so now. Granted that it makes sense for Samsung to not allow remapping, it doesn’t even allow users to disable the button (unless they turn to third-party alternatives). Galaxy S8 owners have no choice when it comes to this pesky button.

Galaxy S8 Tip: Disable Bixby notifications and reminders

Choice is the magic word here. Many Android fans opt for Android-powered smartphones precisely because it offers them more choice compared to the only other leading mobile platform, iOS. Users are free to customize their handsets as they wish. They’re free to install apps from any source and free to flash any ROM.

Samsung sold us the idea of a very intelligent and capable virtual assistant when unveiling the Galaxy S8, but the fact remains that Bixby wasn’t ready at launch. Almost six months after the handset was released, a vast majority of Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ owners still don’t know when they will get to use Bixby in its true form.

The company should at least be more open with its plans for Bixby. It’s gearing up to launch another flagship that counts Bixby as one of its biggest features, and yet, most Galaxy Note 8 owners will not have access to this feature at launch.

One can live with the Bixby button if it actually serves some purpose. As long as it remains useless, it will just drive me nuts every time I press it by accident.

PSA: Samsung is maintaining a record of firmware update changelogs on its website

Samsung has started recording details about its latest updates, including their respective changelogs, in a new section of its website; however, there’s a caveat. Due to its size, the firm has a subsidiary in each country it’s operational in—and only a few of them appear to be participating, including India and the United Kingdom, for flagship smartphones.

The way it works is simple: Copy http://ift.tt/2vGQwiw into your browser’s address bar, then switch out the model placeholder with your handset’s model number and the CSC with your region’s unique CSC. If you want to search for the Galaxy S8+ in India, for example, you’d navigate to http://ift.tt/2vZPNeZ.

To identify your CSC, open up Settings on your device, tap About Phone, select Software Information, locate the Service Provider Software subheading and take note the last three letters—that’s the CSC. If you’re struggling to find your CSC, you can use our Device Info application. The CSC is the last three letters of the Product Code in the Firmware section.

From what we can tell, Samsung is updating the documents after it releases a new firmware upgrade, so if you’re attempting to find out what’s en route to your handset in the future, you’re going to be disappointed. But if you need to track down a changelog for a build that’s already made the rounds, it should prove to be particularly useful.

[Update: Galaxy S8 too] Galaxy S8+ August security patch rolling out in India

Samsung detailed the August Security Maintenance Release last week. It’s now rolling out firmware updates to distribute the latest security patch. We reported yesterday that Samsung had released the August security patch for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in Germany, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

It was only a matter of time before Samsung rolled out said update in other markets across the globe. It has now released the August security patch for the Galaxy S8+ in India. It goes without saying that the update will also land on the Galaxy S8 in the country soon.

Firmware version G955FXXU1AQH3 is now being rolled out for the Galaxy S8+ in India. Weighing in at just over 600MB, the update includes the August security patch, improved PC connection stability and improved auto brightness control.

The August Security Maintenance Release brings patches for 28 vulnerabilities in the Android operating system as well as 12 in Samsung’s own software. There’s not much in the way of new features since this is a routine firmware update that only brings the security patch and makes some minor tweaks.

Samsung has started rolling out the August security patch for the Galaxy S8+ in India today. Users will soon get an over-the-air update notification if they haven’t already.

Update: The Galaxy S8 is also receiving this update in India. The firmware file weighs the same.

Thanks, Ravi!

Galaxy Note 8’s dual-camera setup could be better than we expected

The Galaxy Note 8 may not feature the dual-camera setup we’ve been expecting. Recent leaks and rumors pointing towards the configuration comprising of two 12MP sensors, but a new report fresh out of South Korea claims that it will have both a 12MP and a 13MP sensor; the former a regular lens equipped with OIS and the latter a telephoto one.

One thing the report does corroborate, however, is that the setup on board the Galaxy Note 8 has a two-times optical zoom. It’s also tipped to come with several software-based enhancements, including a Portrait Mode similar to the one Apple introduced last year with the iPhone 7 Plus and new presets for shooting in poorly-lit environments.

In the future, Samsung is believed to use a dual-camera system on all of its flagship, as well as mid-range, smartphones. The Galaxy C10 will be the first affordable device to feature the high-end technology, according to relatively reliable Twitter tipster @mmddj_china—but that’s far from confirmed.

All signs point towards the Galaxy Note 8 being not only the South Korean company’s best, but also most expensive smartphone to date. Under the hood, it should sport a 6.3-inch edge-to-edge Infinity Display, an Exynos 8895/Snapdragon 835 processor, at least 6GB of RAM and a 3,300mAh non-removable battery.

Galaxy Note 8 specs revealed in benchmark results

It’s only a matter of time before Samsung officially confirms the Galaxy Note 8 specs. There’s already plenty of information floating online about the new handset. The Galaxy Note 8 has now surfaced on the GFXBench benchmarking website where it has revealed its specifications.

As expected, the Galaxy Note 8 is powered by an Exynos 8895 processor with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. This will be Samsung’s first flagship smartphone to be released with 6GB of RAM in all markets.

Samsung has previously released variants of other flagship smartphones with 6GB RAM but they’ve remained limited to select markets. The 6.4-inch 2960×1440 pixel resolution display is listed in the result as well. An ARM Mali-G71 graphics processor will be onboard as well.

Samsung is going to unveil the Galaxy Note 8 at an event in New York City on August 23. Reports suggest that it may be available in stores the very next day, at least in the United States. Samsung will also unveil a new Gear Fit2 Pro wearable device alongside the new flagship device.

Pricing and availability information hasn’t been made public so far, Samsung will confirm these details at its event later this month. Reports suggest that it may cost north of 1000 Euro in some markets.

Samsung Display pours $117 million into Cynora

Samsung Display has reportedly invested $117.59 million in Cynora, a German display material developer, in an attempt to enhance the efficiency and performance of its OLED displays.

Cynora is widely-recognized for its development of Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescent (TADF) blue emitters, which many analysts believe will lengthen the lifespan of traditional OLED panels.

A typical OLED screen consists of three emitters: blue, green and red. The former, as noted by The Investor, has a significantly shorter life expectancy than the rest—but TADF can change that.

In theory,  a TV that’s equipped with TADF emitters will last a lot longer than the one that’s sitting in your living room at the present moment, though you’ll need to pay a premium for the privilege.

Samsung patents a Note smartphone with stylus that doubles as a breathalyzer

Samsung’s Galaxy Note handsets of the future may allow you to measure the amount of alcohol in your breath. The company has patented a Galaxy Note handset with a built-in breathalyzer. The handset’s stylus will be capable of bending within its housing to act as both a microphone and a breathalyzer as it will have a built-in gas sensor.

The sensor module will analyze the exhalation and a short-range transceiver unit will transmit the data measured by the sensor module to the device main body. The breathalyzer function will apparently be available even when the user is calling someone and using the stylus as a microphone.

Having a built-in breathalyzer in their smartphone will prove to be a very useful feature for many adult customers. They will easily be able to check if they’re over the legal limit. This will help them avoid tickets for drinking and driving, not to mention the fact that it may even help bring down the number of accidents caused by driving under the influence of alcohol.

Samsung filed for this patent in June 2016 and it was published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office last month. It remains to be seen if and when this technology makes it into a consumer device from Samsung.

Galaxy S5 can survive a fall from 1,000 feet [Video]

If someone asked you to throw your phone off of the roof to see whether it survives the fall, you’d probably not listen to them because you would reasonably expect your phone to shatter upon impact. You’d also reasonably expect it to meet a similar fate after being sucked out of a plane at 1,000 feet. That’s not what happened with this Galaxy S5, though.

A video has been posted on YouTube which allegedly shows the Galaxy S5 being sucked out of an airplane at 1,000 feet and free falling into someone’s yard. This happened while the phone’s owner was recording video of another plane mid-air.

The video has been posted on YouTube by the owner Blake Henderson’s nephew Robert Ryan. The video starts off with a clear landscape for the first few seconds before the phone is apparently sucked out of the plane and it begins its rapid fall.

It lands in someone’s yard and just lays there while the men in the yard chat and go about their business as usual. They discover the phone several minutes later and wonder where did it come from.

The phone was eventually returned to its true owner and we got to see the miraculous survival of this Galaxy S5. One wonders whether the handset would have survived the fall if it landed on the pavement. Probably not.
