Galaxy Grand Neo Plus launches quietly in India

We are often privy to the public launches of Samsung’s high-end devices, such as the Galaxy S, Galaxy Note smartphones and tablets, as well as the company’s Gear smartwatches and Fit fitness bands. While Samsung is known for these devices, the company has an onslaught of lower-end devices and a level of mid-end devices that appeal to those looking for the best experience at a more affordable price.

The Galaxy Grand Neo Plus has been available since the end of January 2015 in Spain, Italy, and a few other countries, but it has now arrived in India and is available for sale.

The Galaxy Grand Neo Plus doesn’t have the “plus”-sized specs you would expect for the handset, but it’s a “plus” in a different way: for those who want a more budget-friendly handset (in other words, the “plus” is found in the extra money you save as opposed to the price of the Galaxy Grand Neo). You’re looking at a slightly smaller display here (5 inches as opposed to 5.01, but not enough to notice), with the same 800 x 480p screen resolution and thin-film transistor (TFT) LCD screen. 1GB of random access memory (RAM) returns in the Grand Neo Plus, but you’ll only get 8GB of storage locally as opposed to the 16GB of storage on the Grand Neo (keep in mind the price is smaller, too). The 1.2Ghz processor returns, but it’s not uncommon for a budget-friendly device to see the same processor in two or more models.

The 5MP back camera returns to the Neo Plus, but you’re getting a better front camera (2MP vs. the 0.3MP of the Grand Neo) than the Neo offers. The 64GB microSD card slot will expand your storage capabilities, so you may not worry about storage at all. Keep in mind, too, that the OS will occupy some of the 8GB of local storage; this means that you won’t have all 8GB of storage available to you out of the box.

The battery will remain at 2,100mAh in the Neo Plus, but Samsung’s new Ultra Power Saving Mode (UPSM) is now part of the deal. While this budget handset doesn’t have the most impressive specs in the world, the UPSM feature is impressive and will serve you well. Users can utilize the UPSM feature at night around bedtime, while using their Neo Plus smartphone during the day. The feature has been designed to use it for cross-territory traveling, and long road trips, for example – but who says it can’t be used for disabling features at night to have battery for the next morning?

The Samsung India e-store has the device available for Rs. 9,990 (~$157USD) as opposed to the Rs. 10,389 (~$164USD) price tag for the Grand Neo, and comes in three colors: black, white, and gold. The savings aren’t much, perhaps, but the battery-saving mode is a huge “plus” in our opinion for a budget handset.

Samsung Z1 becomes number one smartphone model in Bangladesh for Q1 2015

It’s been said that Samsung has struggled with its smartphone marketshare in India, seeing that the country requires more affordable handsets than Samsung usually sells at rock-bottom prices. There are times when Samsung has released a so-called affordable smartphone and some tech analysts shake their heads and think, “Samsung has missed the boat again.” Local vendors have often been more successful at selling extremely budget-conscious smartphones because they also know how to connect with customers on a basic level. Samsung has struggled with that, but it’s a better struggle to have than failing at high-end smartphone sales.

The Tizen-powered Z1, however, has started shaking things up a bit, so much so that the company’s having something of a comeback in Bangladesh. While local vendor Symphony Mobile is still sitting atop the Bangladesh smartphone market with an extremely comfortable position (36.6% of mobile phone shipment marketshare and 38% of smartphone shipment share in Q1 2015), Samsung’s Z1 has now become the top smartphone model in Bangladesh through all of Q1 2015 according to market research analyst firm Counterpoint. This is a rather impressive feat when you consider that Symphony Mobile’s best-selling smartphone model costs around $60 USD while Samsung’s Z1 costs somewhere around $92 USD without discounts.

Samsung India also said earlier this week that the Z1, running its own Tizen OS, has sold 500,000 models in India so far. While 500,000 units may not seem like much compared to the company’s 1o million Galaxy S6 sales, for example, 500,000 units sold can still “arm-wrestle” with a number of well-known Android manufacturers who reach this milestone with high-end Android devices after six months.

Samsung’s now has 7.2% of mobile phone shipments in the country for Q1, and 23.4% of smartphone shipment marketshare for the quarter, giving the Korean manufacturer an overall second place position in the Bangladesh market. In a market where most assume that cheaper is better, some consumers are using their currency to make the case that this simply isn’t true.

Galaxy S6 Iron Man Edition is coming next week

We first reported about the Galaxy S6 Iron Man Edition earlier this month when Samsung merely confirmed that it would be releasing a version of the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge based on this Marvel superhero. At that time the company said that this version will be released either at the end of May or in early June as it had to nail down some details with Marvel first before the Iron Man Edition could be brought to the market. Iron Man fans won’t have to wait for too long to see how this version looks because Samsung is going to unveil it next week.

Samsung has confirmed through its official Facebook page that the Galaxy S6 Iron Man Edition is “coming next week,” the announcement was made in the form of a post on the Facebook page accompanied by a picture that just offers a glimpse of this new version. Details about availability and price will certainly be provided once Samsung officially unveils it, so far it has chosen not to talk about those things. It’s unclear right now if Samsung plans to sell this version in all markets or if it will only be available in selected markets, we’ll find out for sure soon enough.

Galaxy J5 and J7 images and specifications revealed by Tenaa

We exclusively reported about a month back that Samsung is going to expand the Galaxy J series with two new handsets. Currently the series only has the Galaxy J1 in its lineup but the Galaxy J5 and the Galaxy J7 will be added soon. Last month both devices received Bluetooth certification which is always an indication that the launch is not that far off. We’ve already reported on the specifications of the Galaxy J5 and J7 which were later reiterated by user agent profiles that appeared on Samsung’s mobile website.

The China Industry and Information Technology unit a.k.a Tenaa is responsible for certifying electronic devices for use in the People’s Republic and today it has published specifications and images of the Galaxy J5 and J7. This shows that Samsung is gearing up to launch these two handsets as it’s putting them through the required regulatory process in a very important market. As previously reported the Galaxy J5 has a 5.0-inch display, a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor with 1.5GB RAM and 8GB of internal storage. It also has a microSD card slot and a 2600mAh battery.

Samsung Galaxy J7 will be powered by a 1.4GHz Marvel PXA1936 processor with 1.5GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. It’s going to have a 5.5-inch display, 3000mAh battery and like the J5 a 13-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera. The Galaxy J5 will be 8.5 mm thin weighing just 149 grams whereas the J7 is going to be 7.9 mm thin and will hit the scales at 170 grams. Both handsets will come with Android 5.0.2 installed straight out of the box.
