T-Mobile’s latest update for the Galaxy S7 and the S7 edge brings FM Radio support

T-Mobile was supposed to send out a maintenance update for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge a couple of days ago. However, the update was pulled by the carrier at the last minute for reasons still unknown to us. T-Mobile has now started sending out a fresh update to both devices, with the update already reaching devices as well.

It weighs about 164MB, so it’s not a minor update. In terms of changes, there’s no mention of the power and volume button fixes that was talked about two days ago, but the changelog does mention the addition of FM Radio support with this update. This comes along with the usual slew of security patches. Have you received the update yet? Sound off in the comments below.

Samsung now thinks itself more of a software company than a hardware company

Samsung is currently doing great in the smartphone market on the back of its recently released flagship smartphones. However, the company is looking far beyond smartphones or any other type of hardware for that matter. DJ Koh, president of mobile communications at Samsung, said, “Coding is the key to the future,” to the audience at the company’s annual developers conference last week.

Samsung now considers itself more of a software company than a hardware maker, which shows that the company expects smartphone sales to remain flat or decline in the next few quarters. The company is now focussing on creating a connected ecosystem using the Linux-based Tizen platform, which will give the firm an end-to-end control over its products, software, and services.

Similar to Apple, Samsung has started creating products based on its homegrown software. It has already released a smartwatch and a couple of entry-level smartphones based on Tizen software. Most of the company’s recently released smart TVs and connected car systems also run on Tizen-based software.

However, the company will have to rely on third-party developers to create apps for its ecosystem, but we’ve seen stalwarts like Microsoft fail attempting that. Moreover, the company will have to make all its future products compatible with Tizen. The company will also have to compete fiercely with the likes of Apple and Google if it wants to have a leg up in the growing software, services, and cloud market.

Samsung stresses that it has no plans to launch a range of OLED TVs in 2017

Earlier this year, a report was published by the OLED Association predicting that Samsung would reintroduce an OLED TV lineup in 2017. Shortly after the article broke cover, the Vice President of Samsung Display, Park Dong-Gun, revealed that the firm had been conducting extensive internal research on OLED panels, but had no plans to mass produce them. Two month’s later, the President and TV Chief of Samsung Electronics, Kim Hyun-Seok, has reaffirmed that the company has no intentions to manufacture OLED TVs. However, according to The Korea Herald, his “tone and manner was stronger than ever,” which indicates that it may have something else up its sleeve for the upcoming lineup of televisions it’s expected to showcase at CES 2017.

Although OLED boasts more accurate and vibrant picture quality compared to the standard LED display, Samsung has remained skeptical about adopting it for its next generation of TVs as it believes the market is not ready for the emerging technology due to the higher price tag it carries, which is caused by the tricky production process. The multinational corporation remains adamant that it’s more cost-effective to bring its newly-developed cadmium-free 10-bit Quantum Dot panel to a wider range of TVs as it already has the manufacturing facilities in place to produce them on a larger scale. It also claims that Quantum Dot outpaces current OLED TVs in terms of clarity and brightness, so it makes more sense for it to stick to the market it’s already at the top of, instead of dabbling in an over-saturated one.

Possible Samsung Galaxy A4 undergoing testing in India

Samsung’s Galaxy A series started out with three devices, but has, over time, expanded into a full-blown lineup. New data may reveal the existence of a new member of the family: the Galaxy A4.

As is so often the case, it is the Indian import database Zauba that spills the beans on a device with model code SM-A430. Following Samsung’s conventional naming scheme, this would be the Galaxy A4 undergoing the usual slew of R&D activities. No details about the device itself are listed, though indicated unit value is well into flagship territory.

In the past, Samsung trademarked many names of its Galaxy A devices, most of which (apart from the Galaxy A6) have turned into real products by now. The name Galaxy A4, however, was never applied for, so there are no certainties to be derived from that. For now, we will take this listing as a possible first glimpse of the Galaxy A4, though we’ll refrain from drawing solid conclusions until further evidence of its existence surfaces.
