[APK] Gear application updated with support for the Gear Fit2 Pro and Gear Sport

Samsung has released an update for its Gear application on the Galaxy Apps Store. The upgrade bundles support for the recently-announced Gear Fit2 Pro and Gear Sport, as well as a handful of user interface improvements.

Here’s the full changelog:

  • Gear Sport supported.
  • Gear Fit2 Pro supported.
  • Initial Connection Screen improved.
  • News & Tips card added.
  • Card showing Galaxy Apps banner added.
  • New phrases added to Quick Messages

We have to say, it’s a little strange that the firm has waited until now to introduce compatibility for the Gear Fit2 Pro and Gear Sport, considering the former started shipping to some customers in Europe on September 9.

The Gear Sport is scheduled to be released in the region on October 27.

For those in need of a refresher, the Gear Fit2 Pro is essentially a waterproof variant of the Gear Fit 2, while the Gear Sport is a fitness-orientated wearable designed to bridge the gap between the Gear S3 classic and Gear S3 frontier.

Samsung releasing Gear Fit 2 Pro and new Gear VR in Korea

Samsung unveiled its new fitness trackersGear Fit 2 Pro and Gear Sport – two weeks ago at IFA 2017. The Gear Fit 2 Pro went on pre-order in the US in the same week. Now, the company is releasing the Gear Fit 2 Pro in its home market Korea. Samsung has also released the newest version of the Gear VR in the country as well.

The Gear Fit 2 Pro, which is aimed at swimmers, is priced at KRW 229,000 (about $202). The fitness tracker is a 5ATM certified device and is water resistant up to 50 meters, which makes it swim proof. It also features the Speedo On app that can measure swimming related metrics such as lap count, lap time, stroke type, and more.

The sport tracker is more accurate in tracking not only workouts such as basketball, cycling, dancing, running, walking, but also sleep. “Our new Samsung wearables help consumers ‘go beyond fitness’ and enjoy an active, balanced and fulfilled life in a smart and seamless,” said Koh Dong-jin, president of the IT & Mobile Communications Business at Samsung.

Samsung also announced that it will launch the Gear Sport in Korea in a few weeks. The newest version of the Gear VR, however, will be launched in the country on Wednesday. The virtual reality headset comes with a wireless controller, and works with the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and the newly launched Galaxy Note 8.

You can now watch AfreecaTV broadcasts on your Samsung Smart TV

Samsung has announced that it’s teamed up with Korean streaming giant AfreecaTV to offer Smart TV owners the facility to watch real-time broadcasts of popular games, including Battleground, League of Legends and StarCraft. The only caveat? They’ll need to reside in Canada, Korea or the United States.

The firm also revealed that it’s launched two new Smart Hub applications: Gamefly and Steam Link. The former consists of more than one-hundred games, which can be played using a remote control or a smartphone, while the latter is a tool that enables Steam customers to play PC games on their Smart TV.

There is, of course, a catch. Steam Link only supports streaming of Steam content from a PC wirelessly to a Smart TV—so if a user doesn’t have a computer that’s capable of both running a game and streaming it to a monitor over Wi-Fi, they won’t be able to take advantage of the functionality.

“As Samsung’s Smart TV technology, and QLED TV lineup, continue to trail blaze the industry, Samsung will continue to push the boundaries of a TV to a comprehensive entertainment hub for enjoying and consuming various types of content,” explained the firm in a press release published on its Newsroom.

Galaxy Note 8 pre-orders surpass 800,000 in South Korea

The Galaxy Note 8 appears to be defying all odds in South Korea. More than 800,000 people have pre-ordered the handset since reservations opened on Thursday, September 7, far outpacing its predecessor, which received 380,000 pre-orders over a 13-day period.

Even though the Galaxy Note 8 is—dare we say it—the best Android smartphone on the market, it was near-impossible to predict whether it was going to be a hit amongst consumers, because let’s face it: there’s a reason people may have decided to pass on the device.

You know exactly what we’re talking about… the Galaxy Note 7 debacle. It wasn’t clear whether recalling a smartphone (twice) because it had a tendency to burst into flames would permanently tarnish the Galaxy Note brand, but it’s looking like that wasn’t the case.

Customers who pre-ordered a Galaxy Note 8 in Asia, Europe, North America and South America will receive it at some point later today, while those hoping to stroll into their local brick-and-mortar store to pick one up will need to wait until Thursday, September 21.
