Emerald Green color variant of Samsung Galaxy S6 edge now available in India

Samsung had announced during the official unveiling of the Galaxy S6 edge that it would be available in four colors – Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum, Green Emerald, White Pearl – worldwide. However, the Emerald Green color variant was nowhere to be seen in most of the markets. Looks like the company has now decided to make it available, at least in India.

The largest smartphone brand in the world has announced on its official Facebook Page that the Galaxy S6 edge is now available in Emerald Green color in India, but only in the 32GB storage variant. This color variant of the smartphone is available for purchase from Samsung’s official online store as well as various offline retailers in the country for INR 58,900 (~ $918).

The price of the Galaxy S6 has dropped to as low as INR 40,000 in India, and the company is even giving away a wireless charger for free with every new purchase of the device. Samsung is yet to launch 128GB storage variants of the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge in India even though their official prices were unveiled during the official launch in the country.

Samsung Z1 launch in Sri Lanka nears

Samsung has only released the Tizen powered Samsung Z1 in a handful of markets but it appears that it’s not quite done yet with this device and may launch it in a new market. There have been reports recently that it’s lining up a launch of the Samsung Z1 in Sri Lanka and there’s now even more reason to believe that this is going to happen in the near future. The Z1 was first released in India and later on in Bangladesh, according to unofficial reports Samsung has so far sold 500,000 units in the two countries.

The company recently started accepting paid applications from developers in Sri Lanka for the Tizen Store, promising developers that they will receive all of the revenue generated by sales of their paid apps up until January 31, 2016. Today firmware version Z130HDDU0BOE3 has become available for the Samsung Z1 and it carries country code SLK which corresponds to Sri Lanka. This particular firmware version has not yet been released in Bangladesh or India where the Z1 is already available, which is why this is a major indication that the Samsung Z1 launch in Sri Lanka is not that far off. The company itself has so far not confirmed when it will formally launch the device in this country.

Video shows how easy it is to pay with Samsung Pay

Samsung confirmed its new payments service when it unveiled the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge back in March, at that time it said that Samsung Pay would arrive over the summer. Much has already been said and written about the technology that powers Samsung Pay but the average user will not be concerned with it, the average user would want to know just how easy it is to pay with this service, and this video published online today shows just that.

Samsung Pay will work with most merchants at launch because they won’t have to invest in new hardware just to accept this payment method, merchants can use their existing machines to accept payments using Samsung Pay as the service leans on MST or Magnetic Secure Transmission and NFC or Near Field Communication. That’s precisely what’s shown in the video, the merchant turns the terminal towards the customer when it’s time to pay who simply authorizes the payment through the fingerprint sensor and then holds the device against the machine to pay. It takes just a couple of seconds for the payment to be processed and the slip to be generated, it’s that easy. Samsung Pay will be launched this September in the United States and South Korea, after which it will be expanded to China and Europe.

Samsung’s latest ad campaign extols the Galaxy S6′s virtues over the iPhone 6

It has been a while since Samsung released an iPhone bashing advertisement, some of the latest ads for the Galaxy S6 have not even mentioned the arch rival but the company is going back to its old ways with two new ads that it has released today. The new ads are part of the company’s “6 > 6″ campaign which aims to show all of the things the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are better at than Apple’s flagship smartphone.

The first ad highlights the wireless charging feature in Samsung’s latest flagship, the company has actually been promoting this feature quite aggressively recently. It also mentions the wide angle camera as a major plus point over the iPhone 6. The second ad promotes the Galaxy S6 edge and its dual-edge curved display, along with the features that it brings which obviously can’t be found on other devices, not even on the iPhone 6. Samsung will soon begin airing these advertisements on TV as part of the 6 > 6 campaign, it’s the marketing push the company recently talked about to further increase sales of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge.

Tizen to soon get native Facebook, Messenger and Instagram clients?

Tizen’s success as a viable mobile operating system depends primarily on how good its app ecosystem will come to be, and until now, we haven’t seen much that would inspire confidence in its success. WhatsApp was probably the most important release for the OS, and it seems Tizen is now in line to get native clients of three very popular apps – Facebook, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram.

An XDA user managed to discover internal test versions of all three apps on the Tizen Store. It’s not clear if these apps will be completely native or run with the help of OpenMobile’s ACL emulation technology, but either way, their release will surely go a long way in making Tizen a more interesting platform. Apparently, beta versions will be released for users willing to sideload them and help in testing, after which they would go live on the Tizen Store.

It will be very interesting to see if Facebook’s release of its popular services on Samsung’s home-grown platform will inspire other companies to take notice, but for now, those that have bought the only Tizen phone available in the market will have something exciting to look forward to in the coming days.

Themes Thursday: Samsung releases seven new themes in the Theme Store today

We have received immense response on our last version of Themes Thursday, our new section where we write about new themes released in the Galaxy Theme Store. In today’s version of Themes Thursday, we will introduce seven new themes that Samsung has released this week – Dream Girl, Dum Maro Dum, Little Red Riding Hood, Soft Cloud, Space Odyssey, Stamps, and Vacation.

Personally, I liked Dum Maro Dum, as it is quite colorful, and is based upon a superhit Indian song from the 70′s. There’s something for the space lovers as well, Space Odyssey, where the screen unlocking pattern resembles twinkling stars. Even stamp collectors can install and enjoy the Stamps theme from the Theme Store this week. Which one did you like? Do let us know in the comments below.

Samsung signs graphics technology agreement with ARM for ARM’s Mali GPUs

Samsung has long been using ARM’s Mali line of mobile GPUs in its Exynos processors, and the Korean giant has now made a commitment of continuing to do so in the future. Samsung has signed a “long-term graphics technology agreement” with ARM, which will give the former access to all of the semiconductor company’s Mali GPUs, including high-end ones like the Mali-T860 and T880.

The Exynos 7420 processor used in the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge employ the Mali-T760 MP8, and as we have seen in benchmarks and even real-life performance, the GPU packs a serious punch (even though it doesn’t always match competing GPUs in raw numbers.) “Hundreds of millions of consumers have benefited from the longstanding collaboration between Samsung and ARM,” said Mark Dickinson, general manager, media processing group, ARM. “ARM’s leadership in graphics, coupled with this long-term agreement, will enable Samsung to deliver rich and exciting user experiences to consumers on any device.”

Samsung joining forces with ARM doesn’t come as much of a surprise. It has been getting pretty serious about its in-house mobile processors; the company has also been rumored to be working on a mobile GPU of its own, and while it doesn’t look like that rumor will pan out, it’s also possible Samsung will take ARM’s help in designing the GPU.

Exclusive: Samsung Galaxy S5 Neo to come with a newer Exynos processor and an upgraded front-facing camera

Samsung generally releases cut-down variants of its flagship smartphones about a year after the release of the original models. The Galaxy Note 3 Neo and the Galaxy S3 Neo are some of such examples, and now, Samsung is readying yet another cut-down variant of its last-generation flagship smartphone in the form of the Galaxy S5 Neo.

The Galaxy S5 Neo (SM-G903F) will feature a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, 16GB of internal storage, 2GB RAM, a 16-megapixel primary camera, and a 2,800 mAh battery, just like the original Galaxy S5. It even comes with the exact same dimensions and weight – 142 × 72.5 × 8.1 mm and 145 grams – as the original model. The only changes are the processor, the front-facing camera, and the network connectivity.

It features a brand new 64-bit octa-core Exynos 7580 processor that was leaked yesterday through GFXBench. This processor was found ticking inside an unannounced phablet from TCL, a Chinese brand that makes smartphones and various other consumer electronics. It comprises of a 64-bit octa-core CPU (most probably ARM Cortex-A53 cores) clocked at 1.6GHz, and a Mali-T720 GPU. This makes it a downgrade from the Exynos 5422 or the Snapdragon 801 that was used in the Galaxy S5. Neither the CPU, nor the GPU is as powerful as the other two processors.

The front-facing camera has now been upgraded to a 5-megapixel sensor, similar to that of the Galaxy S6, the Galaxy S6 edge, and the Galaxy A series of smartphones. The primary as well as the secondary cameras have sensors homegrown by Samsung.

The device will come in single-SIM as well as dual-SIM variants. The dual-SIM variant of the Galaxy S5 Neo will sport a model number SM-G903FD, and might be released in markets like India, China, and Russia where there’s a huge demand for this feature. The device will feature LTE-A connectivity, an upgrade from the original Galaxy S5, but similar to that of the Galaxy S5 LTE-A. Both the variants will come Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box, but we’re not sure whether it is the new TouchWiz UI that we saw on the Galaxy S6 duo.

It’s too early to talk about the possible release date of the device, but we will keep you updated as and when we get to know more about the Galaxy S5 Neo.

Galaxy Note 5 September launch accidentally confirmed by Samsung executive

We know that the Galaxy Note 5 will be released after the summer, traditionally Samsung has opted for IFA to unveil this high-end handset and it looks like the company is sticking with tradition this time around as well. During a conference call with investors Samsung executive vice president Injong Rhee let the Galaxy Note 5 September launch timeframe slip. Then again, it wasn’t surprising at all since Samsung has previously released new Galaxy Note handsets in September.

Rhee was actually talking about Samsung Pay, the company’s new payments service which has been delayed from July to September. Initially Samsung Pay is going to be launched in the United States and South Korea before it’s expanded to China and Europe. Rhee said that Samsung Pay will first be deployed on the company’s next high-end handset and it’s clear that he means the Galaxy Note 5, he also added that the company hopes up to 20% of its smartphone owners will use the payments service. IFA 2015 starts off on September 4th, that’s when the Galaxy Note 5 is very likely to be unveiled and from the looks of it customers may not have to wait for too long following the announcement to actually go out and buy Samsung’s next high-end handset.

Samsung Galaxy S6 edge Plus images purportedly leak

If you have been holding on for a bigger version of Samsung’s Galaxy S6 edge, then you might be interested in the images that have leaked online today, courtesy of popular YouTuber Marcus Brownlee. As you can see in the pictures below, what we’re looking at seems to be a Galaxy S6 edge with a larger screen, something the extra column of icons on the homescreen also hints at.

Rumors have said that the Galaxy S6 Plus will feature a 5.5-inch display, and it certainly looks like that is the case. Even on the back, it’s clear to see that there is a bit more space between the camera module and the phone’s edges. However, as leaks have suggested, the Galaxy S6 Plus won’t have the same flagship-level hardware as the regular Galaxy S6, with a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor one of the main downgrades.

The Plus model is rumored to be launching in the coming weeks, instead of alongside the Galaxy Note 4 later this year as our own insiders had suggested. The images do reiterate one thing – a bigger Galaxy S6 edge is certainly in the works, and it might not be long before we see Samsung making it official.
