Galaxy Fit 2 gets new update with bug fixes, feature improvements

The Galaxy Fit 2, which was launched alongside the Galaxy Note 20 a couple of months ago, is a great fitness tracker for those who are looking for an affordable option. It has been launched in most important markets worldwide, and the fitness tracker is now receiving a software update.

The latest software update for the Galaxy Fit 2 brings bug fixes and feature improvements. The new software bears firmware version R220XXU1ATK5 and has a download size of 0.7MB. After installing the update, the device won’t automatically go back to the clock face after the screen turns off in the timer mode.

Samsung has also improved the motion recognition for knowing when the user has stopped or resumed exercise. However, the company has removed the vibration notification. During alarm notifications, the vibration will go on for a longer time. The new software also brings improved stability and reliability.

The new update is now rolling out in India. If you haven’t received the update already, you can check for it manually by opening the Galaxy Wearable app and tapping on Band software update.

Galaxy S20 FE and S10e now cost the same but they’re far from equal

The Galaxy S20 FE 5G was released in the USA for the base price of $699 but Black Friday draws near and Samsung is now selling the device for the same price as the Galaxy S10e. For the time being, both phones carry a $599 price tag at Samsung’s online store in the USA, so the question now is which of the two models offers better value for the price.

Long story short, the answer is the Galaxy S20 FE 5G, at least from a purely spec-oriented view. Samsung took the budget flagship approach for both phones but the Galaxy S20 FE 5G is newer and takes advantage of more modern specifications. It’s a more future proof device thanks to 5G, and it also promises better Android OS support. It shipped with Android 10 and it is eligible for Android 13, whereas the Galaxy S10e will be limited to Android 12.

The Galaxy S10e is a better compact solution

The Galaxy S20 FE 5G is technically superior to the Galaxy S10e in many ways. As highlighted in the device comparison widget below, the Galaxy S20 FE 5G takes advantage of a larger display that supports a high refresh rate of 120Hz, and it’s powered by the newer Snapdragon 865 chipset as opposed to the Snapdragon 855 SoC. It also has a larger battery (by 1,400mAh) with faster charging capabilities.

On the other hand, the Galaxy S10e is not entirely obsolete and it does offer a couple of key advantages over the Galaxy S20 FE 5G, namely the compact size and arguably the side-mounted fingerprint scanner. It may not be as elegant as an under-display solution but it is more reliable.

More importantly, the Galaxy S10e weighs a whopping 40g less than the Galaxy S20 FE 5G and it can be described as a true compact (2019) flagship – something we’ve missed out on this year. It measures only 142.2 x 69.9 x 7.9mm, whereas the Galaxy S20 FE 5G’s dimensions clock in at 159.8 x 74.5 x 8.4mm. Simply put, if you’re looking for relatively capable hardware wrapped in a compact body then the Galaxy S10e remains one of your best choices on the market.

Now that both phones cost the same – at least for the time being – would you rather buy the Galaxy S20 FE 5G or the Galaxy S10e for $599? Are there any other reasons why you’d pick one over the other? Leave a comment below.

Instead of the usual $699 entry price, the Galaxy S20 FE 5G can now be acquired for only $549, no strings attached. The offer is valid for the Galaxy S20 FE 5G with 128GB of storage and it’s available at Amazon, Best Buy, and B&H Photo Video.

As of this writing, Amazon has a standard shipping date of November 25 for new Galaxy S20 FE 5G orders whereas Best Buy will ship the smartphone to you by November 23. Meanwhile, B&H Photo Video customers can order the phone now and get it shipped tomorrow. Color availability differs by retailer and Amazon is the only one to offer all six color options. Best Buy and B&H Photo Video are limited to four color options: Cloud Lavender, Cloud Mint, Cloud Navy, and Cloud Red.

256GB model is now discounted at Samsung and Best Buy

Samsung USA is offering its own deal for the Galaxy S20 FE 5G in parallel with these retailer discounts. The Galaxy S20 FE 5G is now available from Samsung USA for $599 instead of $699, and of course, all six color options are available.

Samsung is experimenting with Z-shaped foldable concepts, patent reveals

The World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) published a patent application filed by Samsung Electronics today for a multi-foldable electronic device, suggesting that the company is thinking of leveraging foldable display technology to create new foldable devices with unique form factors. To be precise, the patent application doesn’t pertain to an actual device prototype but rather to the asymmetry required to accommodate a display with two folds.

The patent application essentially describes what it would take for a true Z-shaped foldable device to exist. Because the form factor requires the foldable panel to bend on both the inside and the outside of the phone/tablet, this means that a Z-shaped foldable device would always require two different hinge designs. In turn, it would also mean that one third of the foldable display area will always be exposed and more susceptible to damage, but the patent doesn’t detail any technologies or design elements that would mitigate this unavoidable drawback of the Z-shaped form factor.

Is this the future of Samsung’s foldables?

Once again we need to stress the fact that the recent patent application doesn’t reveal a prototype device, so there’s virtually no guarantee that Samsung is developing a Z-shaped foldable hybrid. However, the company is clearly considering building this new form factor and it might even view it as the way of the future.

According to the patent application, a Z-shaped multi-foldable electronic device may have a reduced thickness in the folded state thanks to structural housing changes meant to support portability.

Samsung may have had its eyes on the Z-shaped design ever since it decided to rename its existing foldable series to include the letter Z. Samsung claimed that it chose the letter Z because it reflects the foldable nature of the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold 2. But perhaps the company was thinking much further into the future when it designated this moniker to its foldable series. Maybe Samsung believes that Z-shaped foldables are the future and what we’re seeing now is a glimpse of that vision.

As to whether or not a Z-shaped foldable is a good idea, that’s another matter altogether. From our own experience with foldable technology, we’re of the opinion that foldable displays work best when they fold on the inside for the simple fact that they are better protected, if nothing else. Of course, Samsung could release a Z-shaped foldable in the future without affecting the existing clamshell and book-like designs. Perhaps they could coexist and this would make the mobile market a lot more diverse rather than continuing to shoehorn it into a single form factor.

Do you think the Z-shaped design a good idea? Should this be the natural evolution of the Galaxy Z Fold series or should Samsung keep the Galaxy Z Fold formula unchanged and release other form factors in addition to its existing ones? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.

Galaxy Z Fold 2 can be yours for half the price with latest trade-in deal

Samsung is offering the biggest discount on the Galaxy Z Fold 2 yet. Customers can now buy the Galaxy Z Fold 2 from Samsung USA for up to 50% off, as long as they’re willing to trade in another eligible device. With this latest discount, customers can effectively acquire the Galaxy Z Fold 2 for as low as $999 – the price of a base Galaxy Note 20 model. Meanwhile, Samsung has also increased the trade-in value for devices with cracked screens at up to $650.

There is a catch to this massive $1000 trade-in discount, however, because it only applies to previous foldable devices such as the original Galaxy Fold, the Galaxy Z Flip, and the Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition. In other words, you can benefit from this $1,000 discount only if you’re an existing foldable owner and you’d like to upgrade to the latest and greatest model.

Samsung also improved Galaxy S20 and iPhone trade-in values

The good news is that Samsung is offering a higher-than-usual trade-in value for other smartphone models as well, namely the Galaxy S20 ($650 trade-in value), the Galaxy S20+ ($700), and the Galaxy S20 Ultra ($750). Meanwhile, trading in an Apple device like the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max will lower the Galaxy Z Fold 2 price by $700 and $800, respectively.

This is a limited-time deal and it applies to the unlocked as well as the carrier variants. Customers are also allowed to personalize the color of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 hinge without affecting trade-in prices. And yes, the offer applies to both the Mystic Black and Mystic Bronze color options. Refer to the links below for more details.

One UI 2.5 firmware update rollout begins for the Galaxy A70 in Europe

The Galaxy A70 is Samsung’s latest smartphone to take advantage of new features brought over by the One UI 2.5 firmware update. Not to be outdone by the Galaxy A50s which received the same update a couple of days ago, the Galaxy A70 is now beginning its One UI 2.5 journey in Europe, though availability is limited to Ukraine.

More specifically, the One UI 2.5 firmware update appears to be rolling out only for the Galaxy A70 variant that’s being sold in Ukraine by mobile network operator Kyivstar. The update weighs 1421 MB, it carries firmware version A705FNXXU5CTK4, and it includes the November 2020 security patch. Assuming that the initial rollout in Ukraine goes without a hitch then availability should soon expand into additional markets across Europe.

The previous One UI 2.0 update for the Galaxy A70 also debuted in Ukraine roughly eight months ago before it became available in more regions. One UI 2.5 should follow a similar path.

New Wi-Fi, Always On Display, Samsung Keyboard features and more

If you’ve been keeping up to date with the One UI 2.5 update then you already have a good idea of what new features to expect. But if you’re a Galaxy A70 owner and this is the first time you hear about it then One UI 2.5 introduces new Samsung Keyboard features, particularly for Split Keyboard mode in landscape, as well as improvements to YouTube search.

In addition, Bitmoji stickers are now supported on Always On Display, and Messages has received new SOS location sharing features. Meanwhile, Galaxy A70 users will now have access to new information when connecting to Wi-Fi networks, particularly in regards to the quality of the connection. The latest update is also making it easier for users to request Wi-Fi passwords.

You can update One UI 2.5 for the Galaxy A70 in Ukraine by tapping the notification once it arrives on your phone or by opening Settings, accessing Software updates, and tapping Download and install. Or you can skip the wait by downloading the latest firmware from our archive manually and installing it on your Galaxy A70 using a Windows PC.

Opinion: Samsung already found the ideal foldable form in the Galaxy Z Flip

While Samsung’s experiments with foldable smartphone concepts appear to be anything but finished, chances are that the company already found the winning formula in this growing niche, at least for the foreseeable future. And I’m not talking about the awkward-looking booklet that is the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

Because as technologically impressive as it is, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is still an extremely peculiar device; one whose novel form factor may allow for a few extra use cases, but not before getting in the way of at least as many existing ones. Can Samsung improve the concept in time for the Galaxy Z Fold 3? Probably, but the real question is whether the next such fat-boy-slim design outperform the Galaxy Z Flip formula from the standpoint of functionality.

The fact that modern smartphone displays can bend is cool, there’s no doubt about that. But the app ecosystem, on the whole, remains indifferent to Samsung’s early experiments with such tech. And it’s going to take many more millions of sold units before meaningful software innovation is even attempted, leaving the current batch of commercially available foldables in a strange place. Without specialized apps, devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 2 are really just less convenient flagships that are slightly better at getting an “ooh, shiny” reaction from passersby.

The Galaxy Z Flip isn’t perfect, but it’s still the only foldable with no major shortcomings

For over half a decade by now, Samsung claimed the number one consumer benefit unlocked by foldable displays will be the ability to conveniently carry a full tablet’s worth of screen real estate in your pocket. The same pocket that’s been threatening to burst ever since smartphone screens surpassed the 5-inch mark. And while that prediction seemed (and still seems) sensible in some respects, we’ve always been too eager to take Samsung’s outlook as a guarantee instead of just wishful thinking.

In case you didn’t realize, flow production of mobile OLED displays has been a pretty successful business for Samsung since the early days of the Galaxy Note family. Consequently, it’s a given that Samsung’s vision for the future of smartphones revolves around its maintained and even improved dominance in this lucrative field. And the current plan for building on this momentum comes down to jacking up profits and/by raising prices to the point of creating an entirely new, ultra-premium flagship category. This process is already well underway, albeit without the key ingredient necessary for it to succeed on the largest of scales: a massive audience both willing and able to pay a premium for highly experimental devices in the vein of the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

The Galaxy Z Flip, meanwhile, is a device that just makes sense from the moment you lay eyes on it. It’s a flagship that doesn’t push the definition of its category by overplaying its hand in the pricing department. It also leverages foldable display tech in order to deliver an all-around improvement over a classic, widely recognizable form factor that’s gotten too big by making it pocketable, ultimately combining both eye candy and functionality into a package that leaves little to be desired.

Of course, it’s debatable whether the Galaxy Z Flip is the best Samsung can currently do in terms of bendable devices. But nearly two years since the introduction of the original Galaxy Fold, this compact flip phone is still low-key Samsung’s best jab at the concept to date.

Galaxy Note 20 Ultra was the world’s best-selling 5G smartphone in September

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, which was unveiled in August 2020, became the best-selling 5G smartphone globally for September. According to a new report from market research firm Counterpoint Research, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra captured a 5% share of the global 5G smartphone market.

Ahead of the launch of the iPhone 12 series by Apple, three out of the top 10 best-selling 5G smartphones worldwide were made by Samsung, while the rest of them were made by Chinese firms. The P40 Pro (4.5%) and the Nova 7 (4.3%) from Huawei were placed on the second and third positions. The Galaxy S20+ was at the fourth position with a 4% market share, while the Galaxy Note 20 was at the eighth rank with a 2.9% share of the 5G smartphone market.

Once figures of November 2020 come out, the list of best-selling 5G smartphone would likely change dramatically. The four iPhone 12 models are expected to enter the list. To counter the new smartphones from Apple, Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S21 series earlier than its usual. Design and specifications of the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra have leaked already.

Latest Galaxy S20 One UI 3.0 beta drops big hint about public release

Remember how we said Samsung was killing it with Android updates recently? Merely a day after it released a new beta build for the Galaxy S20, the company sent out another today. This latest Galaxy S20 One UI 3.0 beta update actually drops an interesting hint.

Many Samsung fans are curious about when the company will finally be releasing One UI 3.0 to the public. The Galaxy S20 lineup will obviously be the first to get it once the beta program finishes. Chances are that might happen soon.

One UI 3.0 public release may not be that far off now

Samsung is sending out a new Galaxy S20 One UI 3.0 beta today. Firmware version G98xxXXU5ZTKF is now rolling out with the December 2020 security patch. The update weighs in at under 200MB and brings fixed for a handful of bugs.

The beta notice mentions that it will not be possible to rollback to Android 10 using Smart Switch once this firmware update is installed. This means that those participating in the beta program can either rollback now without installing this latest update or kiss Android 10 goodbye on their device.

That’s a pretty good indication that the beta program is coming to an end. The pace at which Samsung is sending out new beta builds has certainly been impressive. So it may not be long now before the program ends and Samsung releases One UI 3.0 for all users.

The company has already committed to releasing One UI 3.0 for the Galaxy S20 lineup before the end of December. This latest beta build is rolling out in India and the UK now and will soon be available to users in other eligible markets as well. If you’re a participant in the program, head over to Settings » Software update menu on your Galaxy S20, S20+ or Galaxy S20 Ultra to get this update.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 could be Samsung’s first under-display camera phone

It appears that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 may have something that no other Samsung phones does right now. Camera notches have become public enemy number one for mobile companies over the past few years. They have all tried many different ways to get rid of it.

We’ve seen sliders, rotating sliders, hole-in displays and other solutions. The industry now feels under-display cameras are the way forward. Samsung is believed to be considering this as well. Reports suggest that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 might be the first Samsung phone to get it.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 would be the first foldable phone with this tech

Korean media is reporting that Samsung is aiming to introduce the under-display camera with its next foldable Galaxy Fold handset. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 has an Infinity-O panel. which places the camera sensor in a display cutout. This itself was a massive improvement over the less desirable notch of the original Galaxy Fold.

An under-display camera wouldn’t need a display cutout as well. The camera sensor will actually be placed under the panel, thereby providing a fully immersive viewing experience. ZTE has already showcased how this tech would work on a smartphone with the Axon 20 5G launched earlier this year.

Many sophisticated bits and pieces go into ensuring that the camera and display don’t interfere with each other. Samsung has been rumored to be working on this technology as well. Earlier rumors had suggested that the Galaxy S21 series might be the first to feature an under display camera. However, recent major Galaxy S21 leaks suggest that this will not be the case.

This leaves the Galaxy Z Fold 3 as the only other true Samsung flagship due next year with which this technology can be introduced. There are rumors that the Galaxy Note series may bite the dust next year, a possibility that has many of us hurting.

According to reports, Samsung Display is making the panel required for the under-display camera while the image sensor for the camera is being made by Samsung’s System LSI division. Samsung is also working to improve the output quality from this camera setup by developing a sophisticated image correction algorithm.

An edge-to-edge display without any disruptions would be a sight to behind on a foldable device. This is all just a bit up in the air right now as there’s no other concrete information about Samsung’s plans for its next foldable. So we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.

A look back at Samsung’s powerful and innovative flagships of 2020

Samsung’s journey through the flagship phone landscape for the year 2020 was concluded at Galaxy Unpacked a couple of months ago. In other words, Samsung has already released every flagship it had in store for 2020 and most Galaxy fans are now looking forward to what 2021 has to offer. With the end of the year drawing near and the Galaxy S21 just around the corner, it’s time to look back at Samsung’s efforts for the flagship smartphone market throughout the year and revisit the company’s most powerful and expensive phones to date, as well as what made them stand apart.

Galaxy Z Flip: Reviving the clamshell form factor in 2020

Samsung kicked off its premium 2020 product lineup not with a Galaxy S device but with a brand-new entry into its portfolio, i.e., the Galaxy Z Flip. To be exact, both the Galaxy S20 series and the Galaxy Z Flip were unveiled on the same day but the latter model was able to beat the Galaxy S20 to the market by a few weeks.

The Galaxy Z Flip leveraged foldable display technology to revive the clamshell form factor after a decade of absence. It’s not the most powerful flagship on the market but it is one of the most unique phones of 2020, Samsung or otherwise. It introduced hinge sweeper technology and UTG (ultra-thin glass), both of which were later adopted by the Galaxy Z Fold 2. A 5G variant equipped with the newer Snapdragon 865+ chipset was released in the second half of the year.

Galaxy S20 Ultra: 120Hz and Space Zoom

The Galaxy S20 Ultra was the company’s first – and possibly only – smartphone to physically bear the Space Zoom branding. The phone’s March release had marked the introduction of periscope telephoto sensors and the Galaxy S20 Ultra remains the only Galaxy S20 variant capable of achieving 100x zoom. The system wasn’t perfect at launch but it has been improved through firmware updates.

The Galaxy S20 series was also Samsung’s first smartphone to support a 120Hz refresh rate for the display. This characteristic is becoming increasingly popular but it all started with the S20 lineup. The technology was later improved with the release of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

Galaxy Note 20 Ultra: Low-latency S Pen, LTPO, Gorilla Glass Victus

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra represents an important step for the company’s S Pen series of flagships, perhaps more so than other recent Galaxy Note models. This is because the S Pen itself has been massively improved with a low latency of only 9ms (helped by the 120Hz display refresh rate), and the S Pen experience as a whole was made better by a newer suite of S Pen apps – including a revamped Samsung Notes app – as well as the display itself.

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra supports a 120Hz refresh rate but what set it apart from the Galaxy S20 Ultra was the LTPO backplane. It’s more energy efficient and this leads not only to improved battery life but also lower temperatures when using the high refresh rate mode.

Last but not least, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra was the first Samsung phone to adopt Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. It’s not the only Galaxy device to do so though, as the same solution was also adopted by the king of foldable phones.

Galaxy Z Fold 2: The pinnacle of foldable devices

The last and easily the most ambitious Galaxy flagship of 2020 is the Galaxy Z Fold 2. Unveiled at Galaxy Unpacked alongside the Galaxy Note 20 series and released a few weeks later, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 has improved upon the original Galaxy Fold formula in too many ways to count.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is wrapped in Gorilla Glass Victus protection and adopts sweeper technology for the hinge, as well as UTG for the foldable display. It streamlined the exterior design by abandoning display notches in favor of the iconic Infinity-O cutouts.

The cover display was made much more usable thanks to a larger footprint and a nearly bezel-less design, whereas the flexible display was given cutting-edge 120Hz capabilities. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 also marked the introduction of Flex Mode for the series.

SamMobile’s got an amazing NordVPN Black Friday 2020 deal for you!

Few VPNs come as highly recommended as NordVPN. With 5500+ servers in 59 countries, NordVPN allows you to secure your internet data behind a wall of next-gen encryption. Unlike other VPNs, that level of security doesn’t come at the cost of speed as you get an ultra-fast connection. NordVPN is also highly regarded for its no-logs policy, meaning that as the VPN provider, it doesn’t collect, track or share your private data.

There are a lot of reasons why you should be using a VPN. If you tend to use public Wi-Fi hotspots a lot, you should definitely get a VPN. You might also want to bypass geo-restrictions on your favorite streaming services. NordVPN’s vast network of servers lets you do that as well.

One single subscription lets you connect and secure up to 6 devices. The NordVPN app is available for Android devices in addition to a variety of other desktop, mobile and even smart TV platforms, so you can take advantage of it on most of your devices.

We have great news! SamMobile is offering its readers an amazing NordVPN Black Friday 2020 deal. Get a NordVPN subscription through us and take advantage of a massive 68% discount. You also get 3 months of service for free!

If you don’t like it, NordVPN offers a no questions asked 30-day money-back guarantee. So don’t miss the chance to grab this amazing deal before it runs out!
