Galaxy J7+ surfaces with a dual-camera configuration

We’ve known that Samsung is working on a dual-camera variant of the Galaxy J7 (2017) for a while, and now we know what the unit is going to be called: the Galaxy J7+. At least, that’s what a promotional poster obtained by online blog Thai Mobile Center has led us to believe.

Nothing’s set in stone at present, but according to recent leaks, rumors and speculation, the handset’s dual-camera will comprise of both a 13-megapixel (f/1.7) and a 5-megapixel (f/1.9) lens, which should work together to power the firm’s brand new Live Focus portrait mode.

Other notable specifications include a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED Full HD display, an Exynos 7870 octa-core processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable internal storage, a 16-megapixel front-facing shooter, a 3,000mAh non-removable battery and a dedicated Bixby button.

The Galaxy J7+ will be available in three stunning colors—black, gold and pink—when it hits the shelves in Thailand. Unfortunately, we don’t have a specific launch date, but seeing as Samsung has already drawn up all of the promotional material, it’s probably right around the corner.

Samsung heir sentenced to five years in jail

The Seoul Central District Court has found Lee Jae-yong, vice chairman of Samsung Electronics, guilty of bribery, embezzlement and perjury, amid accusations that the presumed air to the Samsung empire was offering bribes to former South Korean president Park Geun-hye.

Lee was sentenced to spend a maximum of five years in prison. It remains unclear whether the charge will ruin Lee’s chance of succeeding his father, ailing Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee. We doubt it though, seeing as the elder Lee was previously convicted of bribery and tax evasion, only to later be pardoned on both counts.

Lawyers expect Lee to appeal the decision.

Galaxy S5 updated with this month’s security patch

In a surprise move, Samsung has rolled out this month’s security maintenance update for the Galaxy S5 in Europe. As well as the usual slew of bug fixes, the upgrade transports patches for 50 vulnerabilities in the Android OS and 12 in the firm’s software.

We’re shocked that Samsung is continuing to distribute updates for the three-year-old Galaxy S5. Typically, the stops actively updating its—budget-friendly and former flagship—smartphones after their second birthday, as per its official two-year support period.

If you own a Galaxy S5 and would like to check to see if the update is ready for your handset, open up Settings, select Software Update, then tap Download Updates Manually. Alternatively, you can wait until you receive an alert prompting you to install the OTA, but it could take a little longer to arrive.

S Health updated with support for the upcoming Gear Sport

Samsung has updated its S Health application with support for the Gear Sport (SM-R600). It’s worth mentioning, however, that the changelog doesn’t specifically mention the upcoming wearable, but it does refer to the various swim-tracking modes it’s set to introduce.

Information surrounding the Gear Sport is sparse. All we know for certain is that it’s going to be powered by Tizen 3.0 and bundle a whole host of technical health-monitoring features, as well as updated internals, including a waterproof build and more accurate heart rate monitor.

In addition to support for the Gear Sport, the upgrade reportedly transports a more extensive collection of health content for India—but we’re still yet to find anything new. The usual plethora of bug fixes, stability improvements and speed optimizations are also included.

Galaxy J7 could receive the Android 7.0 Nougat update

It’s starting to look like the first-generation Galaxy J7 will receive the much-anticipated Android 7.0 update after all. The handset has been spotted on the Wi-Fi Alliance’s database running a build of Nougat, so it’s safe to assume that Samsung is planning on distributing the upgrade in the near future.

There’s no word on whether the update is on the cards for the original Galaxy J5, but we’re guessing it is. After all, both the Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 were announced—and released—at the same time, and they’re both capable of running the firmware without any hassle, leading us to believe that it will receive the upgrade.

For those unaware, Android 7.0 Nougat bundles a plethora of new features, including enhanced notifications, improved application permissions, new emoji and refined battery saving tools, as well as a truckload of much-needed bug fixes, stability improvements, and speed optimizations.

Samsung Smart TVs bricked by recent firmware update

Those who picked up a new Samsung Smart TV to watch the much-anticipated Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather fight on Saturday could be out of luck. According to The Guardian, a number of customers in the UK have had their TV bricked by a firmware update, rendering it useless.

Users on Samsung’s forums note that their UE50MU6100K, UE49MU7070 and MU6409 models either won’t change the channel or won’t display anything after the splash screen. The firm is reportedly working on an update to patch the bug, but there’s no word on when it will start rolling out.
