Samsung’s now issuing free replacement Sports straps for the Gear S2

One of the main issues with Samsung’s latest smartwatch, the Gear S2, is its rubberized Sports bands breakage vulnerability. Fastening the watch too tightly or switching out the bands frequently for a new look can cause the rubber strap and attachment pins to disengage from each other, making it impossible to reconnect the original band to the watch. However, an internal document has emerged stating that the South Korean company is now issuing replacement straps to customers.

It’s important to bear in mind that not everyone with a broken band will qualify for a replacement, though. It’s only those whose straps have ruptured as a result of the holder being torn when the band was removed or when the rubber strap and pin connector were separated due to every-day use, such as removing the watch from your wrist and frequently loosening and fastening it.

US Supreme Court agrees to hear Samsung review petition against damages awarded to Apple

Samsung announced late last year that it would pay $548 million in damages to Apple. The company decided to pay the damages awarded to Apple after its petition before the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit to obtain an en banc rehearing on whether Apple could enforce payment of damages was denied. Samsung did mention in the case management statement that it will continue to reserve all rights to reclaim or obtain reimbursement of any amounts paid by it if the partial judgement was reversed, modified or set aside on appeal or otherwise. Samsung then filed a petition for writ of certiorari before the United States Supreme Court pleading the apex court to review the decision pertaining to damages in its patent dispute against Apple.

The Supreme Court of the United States has published a decision today granting Samsung’s petition to review the case with respect to damages. Consequently the Apple v. Samsung damages retrial that’s scheduled to begin later this month is likely going to be postponed indefinitely as the matter is now subjudice before the highest court in the land.

The decision to hear the case doesn’t mean that the Supreme Court is going to side with either party in this matter but Samsung will chalk it up as a minor victory nonetheless. There were many who believed that the Supreme Court wouldn’t take up this matter but as it turns out, it’s more than willing to hear the case. Today’s announcement follows another legal victory of Samsung which came just a few weeks ago when an appeals court in the United States overturned a jury verdict that imposed $120 million in damages on the company. It ruled that Samsung did not infringe on the Apple patents in question while also ruling that two of the company’s patents covering its auto-correct and slide-to-unlock features were invalid. The court even found Apple liable for infringing on one of Samsung’s patents.

Legal experts and tech companies alike will follow the proceedings closely as it takes up the question of how to apply a 19th-century law covering intellectual property to 21st-century technologically advanced products. Samsung has already received a lot of support in its position against Apple and interestingly so far no amicus curiae (friend of the court) has filed a letter in support of Apple. The ultimate decision rests with the Supreme Court justices though and they certainly won’t be rushing it out the door.

Gear S2 iOS support arrives in an update later this month

We exclusively confirmed back in December last year that Samsung is working on a Gear Manager app for iOS which will enable users to hook up the Gear S2 smartwatch with an iPhone. Come January, Samsung officially confirmed at the Consumer Electronics Show 2016 that the Gear S2 will be compatible with iOS devices later this year. It didn’t say when the update will arrive but it looks like the update might be arriving in the near future.

The Gear S2 is reportedly going to receive an update by the end of March which is going to bring iOS support to the smartwatch and that’s also when the Gear Manager for iOS will be released. No word as yet on the features that are going to be supported, evidently there will be some features that will require the smartwatch to be hooked up to a Samsung smartphone to function, features like Samsung Pay for example. It was previously reported that this update would arrive in mid-January but that obviously didn’t happen so hopefully this time around the update will arrive for the Gear S2.

Initial sales of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge have beaten expectations

Samsung’s new flagship handsets have received a very positive response from customers around the world. Multiple reports have emerged in the past week or so revealing that the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge have beaten previous sales expectations. Market analysts say the new handsets have done particularly well in markets like India and China. SamMobile China’s research found that Samsung is likely to get more than ten million pre-orders for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge in the country.

Analysts believe that the new handsets are doing well because Samsung has brought back consumer-friendly features like the microSD card slot and water resistance, aside from the fact that the new flagships have a striking design and powerful internals. Analysts predict that the strong performance of these new flagships will bring in more profits for Samsung’s mobile division than earlier expected. Samsung is yet to provide concrete figures showing just how many units it has sold since the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge were released worldwide on March 11.
