First Galaxy M11 live photos emerge from the NCC along with more specs

The Galaxy M11 has been exposed in real-life photos by Taiwan’s regulatory body, the NCC. They reaffirm that the Galaxy M11 will sport an Infinity-O display with a corner cutout. They also give us a closer look at the back panel, which seemingly sports a fingerprint scanner and a vertically-aligned triple main camera setup accompanied by an LED flash.

One of the photos pulled from the NCC application for the Galaxy M11 reveals the phone’s internal battery. It appears to have a capacity of 4,900-5,000mAh. Another image suggests that the device will ship with a 15W fast charger in the box.

The model tested by the NCC appears to have 32GB of storage. Last year’s Galaxy M10 came with 16GB or 32GB of built-in memory, so it looks like Samsung may have bumped up the storage on the Galaxy M11 base model to 32GB.

The Galaxy M11 has already been approved by the Wi-Fi Alliance, and it’s been listed on Google’s Play Store console as one of the many devices that are compatible with the service. It’s already been 14 months since the Galaxy M10 was introduced, and it’s about time for a direct sequel to make an official appearance. Exactly when it will happen remains to be seen, but we’ll keep you up to speed with more details on pricing and availability as soon as we’ll have them.

Rumored Samsung wireless gamepad is already available for purchase

An old patent application is floating around the so-called mobile blogosphere, depicting a Samsung wireless gamepad for Galaxy smartphones. Nobody seems to know when the final product will come out, and that’s most likely because the device was already quietly introduced many months ago, right around the time the Galaxy Note 10 series was unveiled to the world.

The product is called the Glap Gaming Pad and it’s available for purchase in the USA via Amazon for $119, where dozens of reviews speak mostly-positively about it. It’s also listed on Samsung UK’s portal along with a price tag of £79.00, but stocks have been depleted and visitors can sign up for stock alerts. Current availability and prices will differ more or less from one region and retailer to another.

The Glap Gaming Pad is essentially an ODM Samsung device

The only interesting fact that was set in stone by the aforementioned patent applications is that the documents were filed by Samsung, even though the device is not quite labeled as such on retailer channels like Amazon. It’s simply called the Glap Gaming Pad on the official South Korean Glap website, but make no mistake, it was created for Samsung according to the company’s strict specifications.

One of the gamepad’s best features is that it can slide open to accommodate larger devices if necessary, making it compatible with a wide variety of Samsung phones. It connects to your device via Bluetooth 4.1, works with Steam Link, and has its own 340mAh battery which should offer up to 10 hours of gaming time. It doesn’t have internal speakers but it was designed to naturally amplify sounds, i.e., it has some sort of internal resonating chamber.

In closing, if you’re in the market for a wireless controller for your mobile games, you don’t actually have to wait any longer in order to buy a solution imagined by Samsung. It’s already here.

Galaxy S20, Galaxy Z Flip get cross-platform copy/paste with Windows

Samsung announced an expansion of its strategic partnership with Microsoft last year. This brought the Link to Windows feature to the Galaxy Note 10, which is essentially a rebrand of Microsoft’s Your Phone Companion app. As such, this functionality could easily be used on older Samsung devices.

It became evident last month that the two companies will further expand functionality between their platforms, particularly after the launch of Samsung’s new premium phones. So it’s not surprising to see that the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Z Flip have now picked up support for cross-platform copy and paste with Windows PCs.

Link to Windows functionality expanded for Samsung phones

This functionality has been made possible by the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 19582.1001. It allows users to seamlessly copy/paste text and images from their Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, Galaxy S20 Ultra or Galaxy Z Flip to their Windows PC, and vice versa. On Windows, they can just use the right-click menu or the familiar ctrl + c and ctrl + v keyboard shortcuts for copy and paste respectively.

When doing the same from the phone, just tap and hold to select the relevant option from the dialog that appears. This cross-platform copy/paste functionality only works with the devices mentioned above and with a PC running the Windows 10 April 2018 update or higher. This feature can be enabled from the settings menu in Your Phone and Microsoft says that it’s only available in select markets, though it hasn’t revealed which.

It has also been made possible to send and receive Rich Communication Service (RCS) text messages from your Windows PC when it’s connected to a compatible Samsung device. This will only work if your mobile carrier supports RCS. Those who have RCS enabled on their device will use Samsung’s native Messaging app as the default app on their phone. Notifications will sync across the devices so if you view a message on PC, it will be marked as read on the phone as well. A Galaxy S20 series handset is required for this feature in addition to a Windows PC running the April 2018 update or higher.

This update also allows you to turn off your phone’s screen to save battery life when it’s mirroring to your Windows PC. This feature will work on all Samsung devices that support Link to Windows. The black screen will be displayed on the phone once the mirroring session starts and will dismiss itself when the session ends. The black screen can also be manually dismissed at any time by pressing the power button, swiping the phone’s screen, Activating Bixby and disabling the black screen option from the Settings page.

Samsung unveils Global Goals edition Kvadrat case for Galaxy S20+

Samsung is introducing a new Kvadrat case for the Galaxy S20+ called the Global Goals edition. It looks the same as the regular Kvadrat case, except the ‘Kvadrat’ brand tag has been replaced with a Global Goals one, as seen in the image above. Additionally, Samsung revealed that a portion of revenue from sales of the Global Goals edition will be donated to UNDP. The Global Goals edition will be available in select markets only, but launch details are yet unclear.

In addition to the Galaxy S20+ case, Samsung will also release new Kvadrat textile wrist straps for the Galaxy Watch Active 2, but they don’t seem to be a part of the Global Goals initiative.

Kvadrat accessories are made from recycled plastic bottles turned into eco-friendly polyester yarns. The company can create two Galaxy S20+ phone cases from a single 500ml plastic bottle, and they can be dyed into different colors.

You don’t need the Global Goals edition case to support the cause

The Global Goals edition of the Kvadrat case offers another channel through which Samsung fans can support the initiative. However, Galaxy fans can always support Global Goals even without the special edition Kvadrat case. Therefore, if the accessory won’t be launched in your country, you might still be able to offer your support through the dedicated Global Goals app.

Samsung introduced the app about half a year ago and came pre-loaded on the Galaxy Note 10 series. It can be downloaded from the Google Play Store, Galaxy Store, or as an APK from our archive. The app essentially allows users to support charitable causes by viewing ads when charging the device and so on. The Global Goals app was recently updated to include new payment methods and ways for users to donate money using Samsung Pay or Google Pay.

Galaxy A80 Android 10 update with One UI 2.0 starts rolling out

It looks like Samsung is on a roll today. After releasing the Android 10 update to the Galaxy A6 (2018) and the Galaxy A70s, the South Korean firm has rolled out the One UI 2.0 update to the Galaxy A80 in France. Two months ago, the smartphone had picked up the Wi-Fi Alliance certification with the latest Android version on board.

The Galaxy A80 update arrives with firmware version A805FXXU4BTC3 and the February 2020 Android security patch. Along with Android 10, the update should also bring One UI 2.0. It features Dark Mode, Google’s new UI navigation gestures, refreshed UI, smoother animations, tweaked icons, new emojis, more secure Face Unlock, better permissions manager, and more.

Other features include Digital Wellbeing, a redesigned Device Care section, more readable text over wallpapers, an ability to edit camera modes, and an option to display the fingerprint icon even when the screen of the Galaxy A80 is turned off. The screen recorder feature, which was a part of the One UI 2.0 update for most high-end phones, doesn’t seem to have made it to the Galaxy A80.

If you live in France and own the Galaxy A80, you should be able to see the Android 10 update notification today. If you haven’t received the notification, you can check for the update manually by heading to Settings » Software update » Download and install on the phone. If you don’t want to wait until the OTA update shows up, you can download the firmware file from our firmware section and flash it manually.

700 Samsung employees from Korea allowed to enter Vietnam without 14-day quarantine

Amidst the global COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak, most countries are being cautious and screening travelers from countries like China, Iran, Italy, and Korea. Some countries have even decided to ban the entry of foreigners from these countries until further notice. However, Vietnam has decided to exempt hundreds of Samsung Display engineers from a mandatory 14-day quarantine upon entering the country from South Korea.

Over 700 Samsung Display employees traveling from South Korea will be allowed to move straight to the company’s OLED manufacturing plant. 186 engineers from Samsung have already left the Incheon International Airport in South Korea to travel to the Van Don International Airport in Vietnam. These employees will be separated from the existing employees working inside Samsung Display’s plant and will have separate quarters.

Before making the exemption, Vietnam’s authorities inspected the company’s operations and deemed it sufficient to prevent the spread of the virus within the facility. All Samsung employees traveling from South Korea to Vietnam will provide medical examination reports that prove that they do not have the virus.

Samsung decided to send its engineers to Vietnam to prevent further delays in the manufacturing schedule. Samsung Display’s OLED manufacturing plant is situated in the Bac Ninh Province in the northern part of Vietnam.

Samsung is the single largest foreign investor in Vietnam and accounts for over 25 percent of the country’s exports. The South Korean firm has two smartphone manufacturing factories in Vietnam, along with an OLED display manufacturing plant. The company has also pledged to invest $220 million to construct an R&D center in Hanoi and create 800 new jobs.

Galaxy A6 (2018) starts getting Android 10 update

Samsung has been pretty great with software updates for its older phones over the past year. After releasing the Android 10 update to the Galaxy S series and the Galaxy Note series, it has started rolling out the update to smartphones in the Galaxy A series and the Galaxy M series.

Two months ago, we had reported that Samsung has been testing the Android 10 update for Galaxy A6, Galaxy A6+, and the Galaxy A7 (2018). Today, the company started rolling out the Android 10 update to the Galaxy A70s and the Galaxy A6 (2018).

The Galaxy A6 (2018) has started receiving the Android 10 update in France, and other markets around the world could get it over the next few weeks. The update with firmware version A600FNXXU5CTB9 also brings the March 2020 Android security patch to the mid-range smartphone.

We don’t have an official changelog for the update just yet. Still, we expect it to bring most of the Android 10 features such as a refreshed UI design, newer UI navigation gestures, more emojis, improved permissions, and more.

If you live in France and own a Galaxy A6 (2018), you should be able to see a pop-up notification for the update. If you don’t see the notification, you can check for it manually by heading to Settings » Software update » Download and install on the device. Alternatively, you can also download the complete 3.5GB firmware from our firmware section.

New Galaxy S20 software update rolling out now

Samsung is now rolling out what is the first software update for the international variants of the Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra since they hit retail shelves a week ago. We’re speaking of the Exynos-powered variants, which are now receiving an update to build number G98xFXXU1ATC1. Samsung had released an update for the Galaxy S20 series in Korea a week ago, but that update had a newer build that’s different from the one the company has now released in other markets.

The latest update for the international variants is rolling out in India as we write this. Samsung has included a generic changelog that doesn’t give any details, but the update should make some improvements and changes as it’s not just a standard security update (security updates have the letter ‘S’ instead of a ‘U’ before the last five characters of the build number). We’ve faced multiple issues on our Galaxy S20+, including random heating, lag in the camera app, and performance stutters when apps like YouTube are running in picture-in-picture mode, and we hope those are addressed in the new update.

Of course, we also hope the autofocus issues on the Galaxy S20 Ultra are fixed as well. However, with the S20 Ultra’s 108MP camera using standard phase detection autofocus instead of something like Dual Pixel autofocus, we have an inkling its autofocus speed will never be as good as we’re used to seeing on Galaxy flagships. For those wondering, the autofocus issues are not present on the Galaxy S20 and S20+, as both of those phones support Dual Pixel autofocus.

In any case, if you own a Galaxy S20, S20+, or S20 Ultra, you should get a pop-up notification informing you of the update in the next couple of days. You can also try downloading it right away by tapping the Download and install option in the phone’s Settings » Software update menu. We also have the latest firmware for the Galaxy S20 series available in our firmware archive, which you can use to update your phone manually using a Windows computer.

Galaxy S20 Ultra teardown video shows Samsung’s superior periscope zoom camera tech

We’ve already seen a teardown video of the Galaxy S20 Ultra, which Samsung launched last week. However, a new teardown video of the phone takes an in-depth look at the South Korean electronics giant’s periscope camera technology and the ultrasonic fingerprint reader from Qualcomm.

JerryRigEverything’s latest teardown video shows how hard it is to take apart a Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G (South Korean version). As usual, a heat gun is required to remove the back panel safely, but one needs to be extra careful as the corners of the rear panel can be easily cracked if they are not handled with care.

The phone has a Qi-compatible wireless charging coil, which can also reverse charge other devices. Removing the wireless charging coil reveals the 5000mAh battery, which is held into its place using lots and lots of glue. As we know already, the use of glue inside a phone makes it much harder to repair.

There are four cameras on the rear, and they are all safely (and tightly) packed into a metal assembly. The 108MP wide-angle camera and the 48MP telephoto camera are optically stabilized. The periscope-style 10x hybrid optical zoom mechanism is a bit special, though, at least compared to periscope cameras from the rivals. Samsung has stabilized the prism and the middle lens using a set of five electromagnets, making sure that the images and videos aren’t blurred or shaken.

There are no mmWave antennas inside the Korean version of the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G since the carriers in the country do not use the mmWave technology. So, if you plan on using the Korean version of the phone in the US, it won’t be able to latch onto the fastest 5G networks.

Coming to the in-display fingerprint reader, it appears that Samsung is still using the first-generation ultrasonic fingerprint reader from Qualcomm, which can read only a small portion of a user’s finger. The second-generation ultrasonic fingerprint sensors are bigger and faster, but the South Korean firm seems to have decided against using them in the Galaxy S20 series.
