Samsung to provide NAND flash memory chips for next-gen iPhones, reportedly close to securing deal

Samsung and Apple might be adversaries in court as far as patent infringement is concerned but the two companies also work closely together as the former provides the latter with many components for its products. According to a report out of Korea, Samsung is competing against Toshiba to win the order for NAND flash memory chips for the next-generation iPhones from Apple as the Cupertino company reportedly gears up to offer more internal storage on its smartphones.

A source “close to the deal” tells The Korea Times that Samsung is in talks with Apple to sell its NAND flash memory chips for the upcoming iPhones, adding that while it’s close the deal has not been finalized yet as negotiations are still underway regarding price and guaranteed shipments. Samsung’s chip factory in Xian, China is said to be testing the durability and stability of the latest chips before deemed ready for initial shipment. Winning Apple’s business for the next iPhone will be good for Samsung’s chip business since it lost out to the likes of Toshiba, SK hynix and SanDisk for the iPhone 6. The new iPhones are not expected to arrive before September this year, it’s only after they’re released and taken apart will we find out precisely who provided what component.

Samsung is now the biggest patent filer for wearable technology

Samsung is very serious about wearable technology, it was among the very first major companies to start developing and selling smartwatches while it continues to innovate and patent new technologies that might make their way into wearable devices of the future. A report today from Lux Research reveals that Samsung is actually the biggest patent filer in the field of wearable technology, accounting for 4% of the 41,301 patents that have been published on wearable technologies between 2010 and May 2015.

Following Samsung in second place is Qualcomm which accounts for 3% of these patents and Apple comes in third place with 2.2%, the remaining majority of the filers are developers that are not associated with the top 15 companies that file these patents and they make up a whopping 77% of this group. Health is a major area of focus for Samsung as 25% of its wearable filings relate to health. It won’t really surprise anyone to see Samsung on top of the list as it was quick to launch a smartwatch back in 2013 and while its wearable devices haven’t really taken off, Samsung seems adamant to soldier on and cement its footing in the wearable device market.

Samsung regains number one spot in the US smartphone market thanks to the Galaxy S6

Kantar Worldpanel ComTech today released latest smartphone sales data for the three months ending May 2015 and the data shows that due to strong Galaxy S6 sales Samsung has been able to regain the number one manufacturer spot in the United States. The change was witnessed after the first full month of sales of the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge with Samsung’s share in the US smartphone market increasing from 52% in April to 55% in May.

The data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech also shows that the first full month of sales of its latest flagship helped the Korean company improve its share in the US smartphone market period-over-period with the Galaxy S6 becoming the country’s third best-selling smartphone after the iPhone 6 and the Galaxy S5. An improvement in the company’s year-over-year performance was also witnessed with overall US market share down only 0.5 percentage point after three months ending May instead of 1.6 percentage points after three months ending April 2015. Overall Android OS continued to increase its position in the US smartphone market, coming in at 64.9% at the end of last month.

Galaxy S6 buyers in Canada will get 6 months of Google Play Music free for a limited time

An ad-supported version of Google Play Music was earlier made available to users in the US, but there are still a lot of markets where the service is yet to debut. And this includes Canada. However, if you’re in the country and looking for a flagship phone, there might be good news for you.

Google and Samsung have joined hands to offer six months’ worth of Google Play Music subscription free for buyers of the Galaxy S6 in Canada. If you aren’t in the mood to go for the full blown flagship and still want to hum to the tunes of Play Music, you can go for any other Samsung phone and get three months’ worth of subscription.

Google Play Music gives you access to a library of 30 million songs, while it also allows you to sync up to 50,000 of your own tracks to the service.

Galaxy A8 hands on video shows off the device in all its glory

We first reported earlier this year that Samsung is working on several new Galaxy A series handsets of which one is expected to be unveiled soon, the Galaxy A8 has already stopped by the FCC which is usually a big indicator of an upcoming launch. The device has been seen in multiple leaked photos and we’ve exclusively confirmed its specifications before, today a Galaxy A8 hands on video has appeared online showing the device off in all its glory well before the official launch.

Samsung Galaxy A8 is going to have a 5.7-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display with an octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor hooked up to 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. It will also have a 16-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera, a 3,050mAh battery, touch based fingerprint sensor all in a metallic frame that’s 5.9 mm thin and runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop straight out of the box. The Galaxy A8 hands on video that has been posted online gives us a good look at the Galaxy A8 and some of its features like the camera. Samsung has not yet officially announced this device but it’s very likely that the company will have much to say about it in the very near future.
