A massive Samsung showroom is reportedly being built in London

Samsung is reportedly going to open a massive showroom in London’s King’s Cross district. The new location is said to be a showcase for Samsung’s products and technology. It’s reportedly going to be located in the under construction Coal Drops Yard mall.

The company is reportedly going to lease out the entire top floor of the Coal Drops Yard mall for its London showroom. The report suggests that it’s going to be more than just a conventional store where customers can walk in and walk out with a product.

Massive Samsung Showroom In London

Bloomberg reports that Samsung is finalizing details to lease the 20,000 square feet (1,858 square meter) top floor of the Coal Drops Yard mall in London’s King’s Cross district. The space will be located under the kissing roof of what used to be a Victorian coal store.

According to the report, this Samsung showroom is going to be similar to the Samsung 837 location in New York’s Meatpacking district. It’s not a store but “a new kind of place filled with ideas, experiences and Samsung’s cutting edge devices,” according to the company.

The Coal Drops Yard mall isn’t going to be open until October next year so it’s going to be a while before we find out what Samsung’s vision for this showroom is.

Daily Deal: Take 60% off a pair of Active InEar headphones

Amazon has slashed the price of Samsung’s InEar headphones by 60%, so you can currently pick up a pair for just $12.09. For those unaware, these are the same earphones that ship in the box of the firm’s smartphones, with the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8 being the only exceptions.

If you want to take advantage of this particular promotion, hit the Buy Now button below. We’d advise you to hurry, though. Like most of the deals we highlight, including Samsung’s own, Amazon only has a limited amount of inventory available and it’s safe to say it won’t be around for too long.

[Poll] Should the Galaxy S9 iris scanner be ditched for a display-based fingerprint sensor?

There have been countless rumors that the Galaxy S9 might feature an optical fingerprint sensor. What that means it that the sensor will be integrated into the display itself. This was also rumored for the Galaxy S8 as well but Samsung decided against it because apparently, the technology wasn’t ready.

Do you think the Galaxy S9 iris scanner should be removed if the Galaxy S9 comes with an optical fingerprint sensor? Would you feel better about it if Samsung improved facial recognition on the Galaxy S9 before removing the iris scanner? Or would you just like it to stick around as a novelty?

Vote below and share your thoughts about this with us in the comments below.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Samsung Pay updated with support for American Express in the UK

Great news for Samsung Pay customers in the United Kingdom: You can now add your American Express card to the payment platform to start making payments in both brick-and-mortar and online stores using your smartphone—or smartwatch.

At the beginning of the month, Samsung Pay was updated with support for Co-op Bank, one of the United Kingdom’s largest financial institutions, and less than four months before that compatibility for HSBC and M&S Bank was added.

It can take anywhere from 24-hours to 96-hours for the server-side upgrade to reach your handset, but as soon as it does, you’ll be able to add your American Express card to Samsung Pay to start processing contactless payments (up to £30).

Samsung Pay works with the Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8 and more

As we’re sure you’re aware, Samsung Pay is available on a flurry of smartphones in the region, including the Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8, Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S6. It can also be accessed using the Gear S3 classic and Gear S3 frontier.

Galaxy J7 Pro October security update rolling out now

Samsung has now started rolling out the Galaxy J7 Pro October security update. Bearing model number SM-J730GM, the handset is an iteration of the Galaxy J7 (2017) and was launched earlier this year. The handset is available in several markets such as India, Singapore, Mexico and Thailand.

The company is now rolling out the latest October security patch for this handset. The October patch is gradually filtering down to more Samsung devices after being released a couple of weeks back.

Galaxy J7 Pro October Security Update

The Telcel-branded Galaxy J7 Pro has received firmware version J730GMUBU2AQJ2 in Mexico. Since the handset is already running Nougat, this is a minor update that only brings the October security patch.

The latest security patch features fixed for 215 vulnerabilities in the Android operating system. It also brings fixes for six vulnerabilities that Samsung found in its own software.

Samsung has rolled out the October security patch for several devices already. The Galaxy A5 (2016 and 2017), Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S8+ have all received this latest security update.

The latest firmware release with the Galaxy J7 Pro October security update is now available for download from our firmware section. Samsung will likely roll it out in other markets as well in the near future.

Better Mortgage customers can now earn Rewards Points

Better Mortgage, a digital mortgage company attempting to improve access to home financing, has announced that it’s taking advantage of Samsung’s Rewards API to provide customers with Reward Points when they’re pre-approved for a mortgage, lock in a rate or fund a transaction.

“Our new Samsung Rewards API is really important to bring innovative developers such as Better Mortgage into the Samsung ecosystem and provide greater value to our customers,” said Nana Murugesan, VP and General Manager, Services and New Business, Samsung Electronics America.

Once customers rack up a substantial amount of Rewards Points, they’ll have the option to redeem them for Samsung products, gift cards, entries into Instant Win competitions, or even a digital Rewards Visa card, which can be used to pay for goods in brick-and-mortar stores.

Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart could be next

If Better Mortgage’s adoption of Samsung Rewards yields positive results—and there’s no reason it shouldn’t—we can expect to see a number of major companies, like Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop and Walmart, work with Samsung to reward customers for their loyalty.

Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong’s imprisonment could have long-term implications

Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong was imprisoned earlier this year on charges of bribery and corruption. He has been sentenced to five years in jail, although he is appealing the sentence. Samsung’s outgoing CEO Kwon Oh-hyun says that while the business is going well today, his imprisonment could have long-term implications for the company.

Kwon Oh-hyun recently announced that he was stepping down from the top job as the company faces a leadership crisis. He has been with Samsung for over 30 years. His term will be over in March 2018 which will mark the end of his career at the conglomerate.

Samsung Heir Lee Jae-yong’s Imprisonment

In a meeting with business leaders in Washington merely days after announcing his decision to leave the job, Kwon Oh-hyun referred to the imprisonment of the Samsung heir as a “tragedy.”

Lee Jae-yong is the only son of ailing Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee. His rise to the top has been hampered by the legal troubles that have also brought down South Korea’s former president Park Geun-hye.

“The business itself is going well today. That means in the short term we have not big impact. But (in the) long term … we need some … chairman’s group’s advice. In that sense, we have some handicaps,” Kwon said at the meeting.

Samsung is trying to plug the leadership gap presumably until the heir can return to take the reins. There have been reports that the control tower structure might be brought back. It will be a central body that controls much of the organizational decisions.

Samsung kicks off its annual Silicon Valley 5G Summit

Samsung kicked off its Silicon Valley 5G Summit, a platform for telecommunication industry participants to come together to discuss different ways to strengthen the upcoming commercialization of 5G technologies, on Thursday.

“To power our mobile future—and lead the world in 5G service—we need to free up more spectrum and make smart choices about infrastructure. That’s why this discussion is so important,” said FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel.

First commercial 5G applications to roll out in 2018

Samsung expects to see the first commercial 5G applications begin to roll out to support use cases, like Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), at some point in 2018—and with trials well underway in a number of regions, that certainly seems feasible.

Arianna Huffington’s new Samsung app will help you reconnect with life

Arianna Huffington of The Huffington Post fame is also the founder of Thrive Global, a company that’s focused on wellness. The company has launched a new app called Thrive. The app is going to help you disconnect from your smartphone and reconnect with your life. Seems a bit ironic that you need an app to disconnect from your smartphone, but hey, that’s the world we live in now.

“The Thrive App is part of a movement to help people take a break from technology to reconnect in deeper ways with themselves, their family and friends, and the world around them,” Huffington writes.

Arianna Huffington’s Samsung App

The app can be used to put your handset in “Thrive Mode.” It will mute all notifications, calls and texts except from the people that have been specified in the VIP list. When you’re in Thrive Mode, incoming texts will automatically be responded with a message that the user is in Thrive Mode.

So basically, Thrive is an app version of the Do Not Disturb button on Samsung devices. Tap that and you essentially get the same features that Thrive is offering, without having to install a separate app.

Thrive also has an App Control dashboard which tells users how much time they spend using a particular app. With that knowledge in hand, they can decide if they want to set goals and limits for specific apps.

Arianna Huffington’s Samsung app is predictably exclusive to Samsung smartphones. It’s going to be available via the Galaxy App Store on December 15. Those who want to participate in the beta can sign up here.

Galaxy S8+ update brings October security patch, stability improvements

The Galaxy S8+ is now getting an update that brings the October security patch, following devices like the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy A5 (2016 and 2017). Once again, the latest security patch update seems to have hit the Netherlands first, but it shouldn’t be long before it makes its way to other regions. The update is available over the air as a 479 MB download and carries firmware version G955FXXU1AQI9.

Galaxy S8+ latest update includes stability improvements

The latest Galaxy S8+ update also brings stability improvements for the launcher and DeX mode. The latter, we’re assuming, may be related to the upcoming support for running Linux OS on DeX. The changelog doesn’t mention anything else, and as with all monthly updates, this one isn’t likely to have any hidden user-facing features. We also don’t know if the Galaxy S8 has started receiving the update yet, but we’ll let you know once it does. The Galaxy S8 is also getting the update, as reported by one of our readers.

Galaxy S8+ update brings October security patch, stability improvements

If you are using a Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ and want to see if the update is available, open the phone’s settings, tap Software update, then tap Download updates manually. Don’t worry if there’s no update available; just wait for a couple of days and you should get a notification informing you of its arrival. It should also be up in our firmware database shortly.

We were actually the first ones to report that Samsung was working on this tablet for Europe and Latin America four months ago. It’s the successor to the first-generation Galaxy Tab Active that was launched in 2014.

Gerben van Walt Meijer, Samsung’s marketing manager in the Netherlands, said that the Galaxy Tab 2 Active has been designed with feedback from users in mind. It’s meant for employees in demanding professions worldwide. Partnerships with market leaders like IBM have also brought top asset management features to the tablet.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2

The Galaxy Tab Active 2 features an 8-inch 1200×800 pixel resolution display, it can be used even when the user has gloves on. It’s powered by a 1.6GHz Exynos 7880 processor with 3GB RAM and 16GB of storage.

The tablet also features an 8-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera. It’s powered by Android 7.1 Nougat. The Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 will be available in Wi-Fi and 4G + Wi-Fi variants in black color.

The specs are obviously nothing to write home about, but it’s all about durability with this tablet. We’ll have a detailed review of the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 up soon.

The Galaxy Tab Active 2 will go on sale in the Netherlands late next month for 500 euro. Samsung is yet to confirm pricing and availability details for other markets.
