AT&T adds Galaxy S7 and S7 edge to its BOGO promo

AT&T has now added the Galaxy S7 and the S7 edge to its BOGO or Buy One Get One promo, letting customers get two phones for the price of one. The promotion previously included the Galaxy S6, the S6 edge, S6 Active, the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+. You will be required to add a new line with AT&T to be eligible for this promo. While the first phone can be bought using any of the AT&T Next plans, the second device has to be purchased either using EIP 24 or the 30-month AT&T Next plan.

While it covers several handsets from a variety of manufacturers, the terms and conditions mention that both phones have to be from the same manufacturer. The value of the second phone will be credited to your account (up to $695) over a period of 30 months, apparently. So you’re not getting the full amount right away. The credits will start reflecting on your monthly bill after three billing cycles.

It is important to note that AT&T offered the same promo on the Galaxy S7 and the S7 edge a couple of months ago, so this is a comeback of sorts. The offer is only valid until the 30th of June as per the carrier.

How to name your Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge

When you first got your hands on your Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge, I’m sure you blasted through the setup process bypassing all of the tedious configuration tasks, so you could get straight to the home screen in order to experience what Samsung’s latest flagship smartphones have to offer.

However, most people fail to give their device a suitable name, which means that when it comes to pairing Bluetooth accessories in a crowded place, pinpointing your handset is nearly impossible — so today we’re going to be showing you how to assign a codename to your unit once you’ve finished the initial setup procedure.

It’s actually extremely easy to do. Here’s how:

  1. Open up Settings.
  2. Navigate into About Device.
  3. Tap Device Name.
  4. Give your handset a suitable moiker, then hit Save.

Voilà! You have successfully renamed your smartphone. If you happen to run into any issues along the way, do be sure to let us know in the comments section below, and we’ll do our very best to get you back on track.

Bait! for Gear VR tests your loyalty to your boss and your love of fishing

I’ve never been fishing in my life. Though I live in the countryside, I’ve never gone to a lake, river, or elsewhere to fish. I have never ever been close to a shark, though I’ve been to a few beaches in my part of the world and been in the water several times throughout my 31 years of life.

With a background that has never once involved fishing, and with little exposure to the aquatic life, you’d think that games like Bait! for the Gear VR that are all about fishing would be the first titles I’d pass up when shopping in the Oculus Store. Well, surprisingly, I didn’t do that. Instead, I embraced Bait!.

Bait! is a game that is, as the title implies, all about fishing bait. Co-created by Resolution Games Founder and Candy Crush Saga creator Tommy Palm, the game finds you, a fisher by profession, at Bait! Island to catch a fish for your boss. She (yes, your boss is a woman named Miss Hark) wants you to catch some fish so that they can be preserved in what you’re told is a struggling aquarium. Your goal is to catch the requested fish to keep the aquarium running; since you’re working for your boss, who owns it, catching the fish and keeping the aquarium running are also personal goals of yours (for your financial livelihood).

Along the way, you’ll meet some of the locals (two cousins and fishermen named Dharma-Mae, or her “unhippy” name, Dolly-Mae, and Jim-Bob) who run fishing shops on Bait! Island. The Island itself contains four fishing environments or scenes in which you can fish (Ocean Lake, Cherry Falls, Shady Swamp, and Secret Sanctuary), and you have to follow and adhere to the plot of the story in order to unlock the various environments.

As you rise in the game, you’ll catch new and larger fish, gaining various amounts of money (coins in this case) per fish that you can then use to buy new bait and fishing equipment. You’ll also find yourself catching beer cans, soda cans, and even an abandoned boot here or there (which makes you wonder if some of the fishermen were turned into bait while fishing on Bait! Island) to clear the water so as to catch more fish.

There are 43 fish that you must catch, and there’s a “Fish-O-Pedia” if you need to keep track of the different kinds of fish you catch, as well as information on each fish you catch. You’ll need to catch one of each kind of fish, though you’ll find yourself catching more duplicate fish than ever. You’ll catch Cow Koi, Sparkling Trout, Zebra Tuna, Tangerine Tang, Knife Fish, Alligator Perch, Python Eel, Bull Piranha, Kahuna Tuna, Hot Rod Cuda, Pinstripe Perch, Chili Anchovy, Camo Carp, Golden Crackerfish, Parrot Perch, Bozo Fish, and Grim Anglerfish, to name just a few.

By the end of the game (after catching 30+ fish), you’ll realize that the game Bait! is not just named for the fish or the island, but also for you: as a fisherman, you could also be “bait,” headed for a trap with your boss — who’s having you catch fish in order to smuggle them illegally instead of saving a poor, struggling aquarium. Apart from some words on-screen, though, your growth as a player is virtually static.

Yes, you catch more and more fish in the game, but you don’t get to come to the realization that Miss Hark, your boss, is really a scam artist; instead, Dharma-Mae tells you, saying that other fishermen have been duped as you have been. Then, you tell Miss Hark that you’ll no longer work for her, but again, you have to tell her this, the words are on-screen, and you don’t get a choice in the matter.

Enhancements to Bait! for Gear VR will make a great game better

If you’re someone who loves fishing and loves the Gear VR and virtual reality in general, you’ll love Bait!. It’s a game that’s easy on the eyes in terms of graphics, and doesn’t require any head-turning or a gamepad in order to play it and enjoy it; you can simply use the trackpad on the side of the Gear VR headset.

At the same time, however, I’d love to see Bait! gain more fishing scenes or lakes so that you’re not tied to just 4. Bait! can grow as a game, so there’s always a chance that the game will grow in the future, but as a game that’s ready for new players who’ve never experienced it, I think most will be pleased.

Secondly, I’d like to see Bait! give players a choice of whether to stay with Miss Hark or free themselves from her wicked grasp. Part of the fun in VR is that it is virtual reality, anything you want it to be, so various scenarios should be provided and the player(s) should be given the choice to decide which scenario he or she wants most.

Last but not least, Bait! has the potential to be a multi-game series if it’s done right. Living in the US, I’d like to see 50 scenes, at least one from each of the fifty states, be made available in the game so that you never get bored with fishing. Places in Europe and around the world with access to large bodies of water could also be made available in future updates. I realize that all this development costs money, and Bait! may prove a success initially, but the key to maintaining a successful game is to not only attract first-time players but also retain them in the long-term.

Long-term players will find themselves wanting more after playing the game for just a few days. I caught 35 fish in about nine hours of Gear VR (spread over 3 days), so you’ll find yourself excited on the front end but bored when you’re down to the last 8 fish (there are a total of 43)) and can’t find them — and still find yourself stuck at the same four lakes with few instructions on how to catch the remaining 8 fish.

Conclusion

Bait! is a terrific game for first-time players, and this game will make Gear VR exciting for new users who’ve picked up their headset to play for the first time. While the game needs greater customization and fishing environments, I have no doubt that this game is what I’ll play night after night, time and time again. You will, too.

You can hook Bait! for Gear VR for your own at the Oculus Store. It is currently the third top-selling free game in the Oculus Store, so there’s something to all the hype.

Samsung unveils 10nm 6GB DRAM likely meant for the Galaxy Note 6

Samsung has wrapped up the 2016 Samsung Mobile Solutions Forum in Shenzhen, China. The forum was convened to share the latest technology trends and talk about the future development of trends, particularly in the semiconductor industry. Samsung unveiled its 10-nanometer LPDDR4 6GB mobile DRAM which is likely going to arrive in the Galaxy Note 6 first when the handset launches in August this year.

If rumors are to be believed, the Galaxy Note 6 is going to feature a 5.8-inch ‘Slim RGB’ AMOLED display with a Snapdragon 823 process under the hood coupled with 6GB of RAM. There’s also the possibility that the Galaxy Note 6 is going to feature an iris scanner. From the looks of it, the Galaxy Note 6 has a good chance of being the first consumer device from Samsung to feature its LPDDR4 6GB DRAM. It goes without saying that we can then expect this component to be used for the Galaxy S8 as well. Built on the 10nm process the 6GB DRAM should provide more power while consuming less energy, thus contributing to extending the battery life of the upcoming flagship. We’ve already told you that Samsung has started firmware development for the Galaxy Note 6 and that the handset is likely to arrive in August.

Samsung’s latest trademark registrations hint at iris scanner for the Galaxy Note 6

We reported last month that there’s a possibility that the Galaxy Note 6 is going to feature an iris scanner. This biometric component has long been rumored for Samsung’s flagship devices but we’ve yet to see it surface in an actual product. Samsung has filed for registration of a couple of trademarks in the EU which suggests that it might finally happen later this year with the Galaxy Note 6.

According to a report, Samsung has filed for registering the “Samsung Iris” and “Samsung Eyeprint” trademarks in the European Union. This clearly hints at the possibility that the company’s upcoming flagship could feature an iris scanner, it’s not a feature that Samsung is likely to debut with a mid-range handset after all. Samsung has obviously confirmed nothing about the Galaxy Note 6 as yet, the handset itself is expected to be launched in August this year.

The Galaxy C series might not be that cheap after all

We know that Samsung will launch its new C series smartphones in the coming week. Specifications and pricing for the Galaxy C5 and the Galaxy C7 have already been leaked multiple times but a new report out of China today suggests that these handsets may not be that cheap after all. Both smartphones are fashioned out of metal and will be launched in China only, at least initially.

The report suggests that the Galaxy C5 will cost 2199 CNY ($335) and the Galaxy C7 will be priced at CNY ($337) when they go on sale in the coming week. It was previously rumored that the Galaxy C5 and the Galaxy C7 will have price tags of 1599 CNY ($245) and 1799 CNY ($276) respectively. No other changes have been mentioned in the report today so we’re still looking at a 5.7-inch and 5.2-inch 1080p display for the Galaxy C7 and the Galaxy C5, with both having a 64-bit Snapdragon 617 processor, 4GB RAM, 16-megapixel rear and 8-megapixel front camera, 32/64GB internal storage, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

The report does mention that in order to make them more appealing, Samsung has kitted the devices with a fingerprint sensor that does much more than just provide access control to users. Samsung is expected to launch the C series handsets on May 26.

Samsung X Line Friends accessories for the Galaxy S7 will be released next month

Back when it launched the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge, Samsung announced that it has teamed up with Line for new accessories for its flagship smartphones. The Samsung X Line Friends accessories collection for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge included a clear cover, a battery pack, and a wireless charger. It has been confirmed today that these accessories will be available for purchase next month.

Connie and Brown, the Line Friends, figure in the video that showcases these accessories. They’re dressed in a spacesuit, and appear to be on a mission in space to save the galaxy, it’s a cute little video that gets the point across regarding this 5,200mAh battery pack, wireless charger stand and a stylish cover that helps protect the device against external shocks. Samsung X Line Friends accessories will be available to purchase starting next month from Samsung’s website, Samsung Digital Plaza, Samsung Mobile Stores and Delight Stores in South Korea.

Samsung patents new panel that’ll enable users to scribble on an Edge display using the S Pen

A patent filing dating back to August 2015 has surfaced today for a nifty new feature that could be ship on board the upcoming successor to the Galaxy Note Edge. The sketches included in the documentation suggest that Samsung is internally developing a stylus-sensitive side panel, which will enable users to scribble directly on the Edge display using the S Pen. The overall purpose of this functionality remains unknown, but there are many scenarios where this could prove to be useful, such as when needing to write down a telephone number while using an application.

As with many patents and trademarks, it’s perfectly possible that this development will never see the light of day. However, we’ll be sure to keep our eyes peeled for any new information on the matter and will report back in a timely manner, so be sure to keep your browser pointed to SamMobile for all the latest details. Alternatively, you can follow us over on Facebook and Twitter to receive live updates whenever we publish a new story.
