Pink Galaxy Note 10 with matching S Pen breaks cover

Are you up for another round of Galaxy Note 10 renders? Well, here it is, this time showcasing the flagship in pink. We’ve exclusively reported a couple of months ago that the Galaxy Note 10 will be available in pink, at least in some countries. Now the leaked renders at hand offer a first look at how the phablet will look like in this finish.

Gradient silver has been the most predominant color in the numerous Galaxy Note 10 press renders that have been leaked so far, but not every Note 10 color option will be iridescent. Much like the simple black finish, it looks like pink will be more subdued and won’t have a gradient effect. Instead, it seemingly has a matte finish. Furthermore, the pink Galaxy Note 10 has an S Pen sharing the same color as the device itself, whereas gradient silver models seem to be breaking the mold and feature a blue stylus.

Only the smaller Galaxy Note 10 is shown in these fresh renders, but the Galaxy Note 10+ will likely get the same treatment. A couple of months ago we’ve also learned that the Note 10 series should launch in red, but so far we haven’t come across any press renders to set this detail in stone. Nevertheless, our sources were right about the pink flavor, so the red color is very likely to exist as well.

Galaxy A80 update adds autofocus for shooting selfies

Samsung has pushed out a software update that adds autofocus functionality to the front camera on the Galaxy A80. For a device with a rotating camera mechanism that enables the use of the same high-quality camera setup for selfies and landscape photos, you’d expect to have all features of that camera setup in both selfie and rear camera mode. That’s not the case, however, and it looks like Samsung wants to fix some of that through software updates.

As you’ll see in our soon-to-be-published Galaxy A80 review, there are quite a few consistency issues between selfie mode and when you’re taking photos with the cameras facing away from you. The camera doesn’t remember settings between the two modes, neither does it support features like Scene Optimizer or the LED flash when you’re taking selfies. The camera assembly itself isn’t tested very well and can get stuck in the rotation process even a week or two after you start using the device, painting a bleak picture of its long-term durability.

The Galaxy A80 software update comes with software version A805FXXU2ASG7 and bundles the July 2019 security patch. It’s available over the air and also via Samsung’s Smart Switch software and from our firmware section. Our review of the device will go live sometime tomorrow, so if you’re wondering if the Galaxy A80 is worth its asking price, we’ll soon have an answer (spoiler alert: it’s not really as good as Samsung wants everyone to think it is).

More Galaxy Tab S6 specifications surface online

More details about the Galaxy Tab S6 have surfaced online today. While there’s not much left to imagine as far as its design is concerned since we have already leaked live images of the device. There haven’t been many reports about the components inside. Now a fresh report throws some light on it.

Big battery, 2K display, and more

A Taiwanese certification listing earlier this month had revealed that the Galaxy Tab S6 will pack a 6,840mAh battery with 15W fast charging support. However, the new report claims that the battery capacity is 7,040mAh instead, though this could just be rated/actual capacity difference. In either case, the Tab S6 gets a smaller battery than its predecessor, the Galaxy Tab S4, which came with a 7,300mAh battery.

Battery efficiency, however, should not be compromised thanks to better internals on the Tab S6. The slate features a 10.5 inch AMOLED display of 2K resolution and is powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset. The dual rear camera setup includes a 13MP (f/1.9) primary sensor and a 5MP depth sensor. The front-facing camera is an 8MP shooter. The Tab S6 weighs 420g, much less than the Tab S4 that weighed 483g.

The Galaxy Tab S6 will come with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage for the base model. An 8GB+256GB option will also be available for those who want more. The slate also features a microSD slot that supports up to 512GB cards. Other features are said to include four AKG-tuned speakers, an in-display fingerprint sensor, Samsung DeX support, Bixby assistant and call/message continuity. There’s also an optional keyboard cover featuring a trackpad.

The Galaxy Tab S6 is expected to launch alongside the Galaxy Note 10 series on August 7. It will be available in both Wi-Fi and LTE variants. Color choices include gray, pink, and blue. The S Pen, which attaches magnetically on the back of the tablet, shares the same color scheme as the tablet itself.

No more free 100GB OneDrive storage for new Galaxy device owners?

Samsung may stop offering free 100GB of Microsoft OneDrive storage to new customers who buy a Galaxy smartphone or tablet with OneDrive pre-installed, according to one of our sources. July 25 may have been the last day someone buying a Galaxy device for the first time would get the OneDrive offer, although Samsung seems to have sent no official notices on the matter, so the offer may still be in place and may be discontinued at a later date.

Samsung and Microsoft teamed up way back in 2015 to bundle new Galaxy devices with the latter’s suite of productivity apps, including the three main Office apps (PowerPoint, Word, and Excel) and OneDrive. All flagships and most mid-range devices were included in the partnership, and every user was entitled to free 100GB of extended OneDrive storage for two years. Microsoft reduced the validity of the free 100GB storage to twelve months in April this year, and it seems the offer will cease to exist completely going forward.

If the July 25 discontinuation date is accurate, Microsoft is stopping its OneDrive storage offer right before the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Tab S6 are going to make their official debut. Samsung had also reduced the free storage amount for its Samsung Cloud service earlier this year, so it seems the Korean giant is no longer interested in the cloud side of things as far as storage is concerned, an odd move considering the company has also begun stripping some of its devices off a microSD slot.

Galaxy Note 10+ 5G with Exynos 9825 chipset gets benchmarked

The Galaxy Note 10+ 5G carrying the model number SM-N976N appears to have been tested with the online benchmarking tool Geekbench. The phone is equipped with 12GB of RAM and the Exynos 9825 chipset, meaning it’s the international variant.

Unsurprisingly, the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G runs Android Pie, but it will most likely be on track for an early update to Android Q after Google releases it later this year. We’ve exclusively revealed a couple of weeks ago that Android Q will mark the release of a major One UI update, bumping the proprietary software to version 2.0.

In Geekbench, the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G powered by the upcoming Exynos 9825 silicon scores around 4,500 points and 10,400 points in the single-core and multi-core tests, respectively. The results are relatively on par with the Galaxy S10+, but it does seem like the Exynos 9825 might handle single-core tasks more proficiently than the Qualcomm-powered S10+. Keep in mind that these are preliminary tests. Results are subject to change as Samsung could optimize the device further.

The series will also include the standard Galaxy Note 10 which was tested in Geekbench a couple of weeks ago, yielding a similar score. It will share the chipset configuration with the Note 10+ but will feature 8GB of RAM. Samsung’s next Note series will be unveiled on August 7 in New York City and recent reports suggest the phone is likely to become available for pre-order on the same date.

Galaxy Note 10 pre-order may begin on August 7 itself

With just a week to go till the launch of Samsung’s new flagship, we can pass along some information about the Galaxy Note 10 pre-order. We’re told that Samsung may begin taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ on August 7 itself.

Samsung has already confirmed the Galaxy Note 10 launch event for August 7. The event will take place in New York City. The company will confirm the precise release date during the launch. However, reports suggest that it will hit stores on August 23.

Galaxy Note 10 pre-order to be available from August 7

We hear that pre-orders will be opened for the Galaxy Note 10/Note 10+ shortly after the launch event on August 7 and that retail sales will begin on August 23. As previously reported, prices are expected to start at 999 euro. Samsung might offer generous trade-in values for customers looking to upgrade from older devices.

We’re also told that the Galaxy Note 10 will be available with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, at least in Europe. There won’t be a 128GB storage variant. The Galaxy Note 10+ will have 12GB RAM in both the 256GB and 512GB variants. No word as yet about the Galaxy Note 10 pre-order gifts but we should hear about them in the coming days.

There’s a lot of anticipation among fans for the new Samsung flagship. Some may be dejected by the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack and the microSD slot being removed on the smaller model. It won’t be a surprise if the Galaxy Note 10+ ends up selling better compared to the Galaxy Note 10.

Why you might want to consider skipping the Galaxy Fold in September

With the redesigned Galaxy Fold on the horizon, many smartphone lovers are asking themselves whether or not they should buy it once it will hit the shelves in September. Previously, we’ve given you a list of reasons why you might want to consider buying Samsung’s first foldable phone. But this is a two-way street and, just as well, there are reasons to consider skipping the Galaxy Fold.

The elephant in the room: the price

The Galaxy Fold is set to launch for around $2,000. There’s simply no way around the fact that this is an expensive device. Sure, it’s as premium as it can be and it’s been in development for many years. It’s a costly device to manufacture. The price can be partly justified by the fact that it’s both a phone and a tablet, and that buying a top-tier smartphone along with a high-end tablet would cost you about the same as the Fold.

However, this is also quite subjective because if you don’t care as much about the foldable phone’s compact nature, you could be better off buying two separate devices. It probably wouldn’t be as cool or perhaps even practical as the Fold, at least in some situations. But while you could argue that the Fold offers the best of both worlds, it doesn’t actually excel in either. It really depends on what type of user you are and how much value you expect to get from each form factor.

It’s not that great of a phone when folded

Once again, the Galaxy Fold is both a phone and a tablet, and although it gets pretty darn close to the functionality of a regular tablet when unfolded, it’s not nearly as practical as a smartphone when folded. This is because of the rather small 4.6-inch Cover display which is surrounded by the thickest bezels around. The Cover display is not too limiting but it is a compromise. It can run your usual applications and so on, but the small footprint and odd 21:9 aspect ratio doesn’t provide the same user experience as a regular smartphone. You’ll find that some apps, or mobile games, just don’t work that well on the smaller screen.

This shortcoming is further accentuated by the fact that the Galaxy Fold had to be delayed and it will virtually launch later than the Galaxy Note 10 series. The Note 10 is a flagship phone through and through, and it’s further enriched by the S Pen. In its shadow, the Galaxy Fold is probably going to be a hard sell for people who don’t care as much about the tablet side of things and plan to use most of their applications in the phone form factor.

There are some shortcomings in terms of features

Some smartphone users may have gotten more used to the idea that flagship phones will eventually ditch the headphone jack and, in some cases, expandable storage. Unsurprisingly, the Galaxy Fold skips on both of these features that are considered standard by a lot of other smartphone users. It does come with 512GB of storage and it includes a pair of wireless Galaxy Buds in the box, which should alleviate these shortcomings. But if you’re part of the latter camp and you do care about the 3.5mm headphone jack and microSD card slot then the Galaxy Fold is probably not for you.

Also worth considering is that the Galaxy Fold has 15W fast battery charging capabilities. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ are expected to benefit from 25W and 45W super fast charging, respectively. It might not make that much of a difference, depending on what type of user you are. You can check this comparison between 15W and 25W fast charging for more information.

It’s a first-generation device

The foldable form factor is new and, as a result, it’s untested for the long term. We’ve already witnessed the struggles Samsung had to go through with the first Galaxy Fold version, and even though the redesigned model should fix the screen-related issues, we can’t yet be certain of just how foolproof it’s going to be. Either way, there’s always a risk associated with being an early adopter of brand new technologies.

Furthermore, there’s no telling how the foldable form factor will evolve over time or if the Galaxy Fold’s design will become obsolete. If you want to play it safe and don’t like adopting new and arguably untested tech, you might want to wait until Samsung releases the second or third Fold iteration before abandoning the true and tested candy bar form factor.

What’s your opinion regarding the Galaxy Fold? Are you going to buy one or skip it? Feel free to take this poll and let us know.

Samsung seems to be considering new names for 5G variants of its flagship phones

After years of hype and trials, 5G networks finally started going live in select parts of the world this year. This also means smartphone manufacturers launching 5G devices to use on those networks. Samsung has been quite bullish about 5G – both as a network equipment supplier and a smartphone vendor. Naturally, it was one of the first companies to make a mainstream 5G phone when it launched the Galaxy S10 5G earlier this year. From the leaks, it appears it is going to do the same for the upcoming Galaxy Note 10 as well.

With 5G variants set to become common, it appears Samsung is considering new names for these devices. On its SmartLab Plus customer research app, the company has recently put out a survey asking users to select the most memorable name. The options, as seen in the screenshot below, include Samsung Galaxy S10 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S10 Performance Edition, Samsung Galaxy S10, Samsung Galaxy S10 Pro Edition, Samsung Galaxy S10 Speed Edition, and Samsung Galaxy S10 5G.

It is worth noting that a survey by Samsung doesn’t guarantee a name change is coming. However, it hints that the company may be at least considering the idea. To play devil’s advocate, this survey could also be about just gauging which of the flagship names resonate better with customers and may not be related to the 5G variant specifically.

If it is about the 5G model, I personally find the 5G prefix more sensible than the alternatives here. None of the other options in the survey are indicative of what the phone is about. Once 5G becomes a staple feature of all its flagships, then Samsung can remove the separate variant altogether, as it did with the 4G models before.

What would be your choice among the above options? Do let us know in the comments section below.

Galaxy Note 10+ specs sheet paints a clearer picture of the flagship

A new report today claims to bring us the Galaxy Note 10+ specs sheet. It comes from the same outlet that has leaked detailed renders of the new flagship. So one can be reasonably certain that this information is accurate.

There isn’t much that’s not already known about the Galaxy Note 10. There have been a few leaked renders and images already. Other reports have detailed many of the changes that Samsung has made to its new flagship smartphone.

Galaxy Note 10+ specs sheet surfaces

Measuring 162.3 x 77.1 x 7.9mm, the 198g Galaxy Note 10+ features a 6.8-inch Quad HD+ 3040×1440 pixel resolution display with 498ppi. It’s protected with Gorilla Glass 6. There’s a 7nm Exynos 9825 processor under the hood. The Galaxy Note 10+ will have 12GB of RAM with both 256GB and 512GB UFS 3.0 storage variants. It’s also the only new Note model to feature a microSD card slot. No, it won’t have a 3.5mm headphone jack.

This Galaxy Note 10+ specs sheet also lists a rear triple camera system with a three-stage variable aperture, in addition to a ToF sensor. The 12-megapixel primary sensor has f/1.5, f/1.8, and f/2.4 aperture setting. As we previously mentioned, the 12-megapixel telephoto camera will be improved with f/2.1 for better low-light zoom pictures. A 16-megapixel f/2.2 wide-angle camera will also be present. A 10-megapixel front camera is said to be onboard as well. The camera system is capable of capturing video in 4K at 60fps.

All of this is going to be powered by a 4,300mAh battery that supports 45W fast charging. However, you’ll have to purchase the 45W charger separately. Wireless charging speed gets a bump up to 20W. It obviously runs Android 9 Pie with One UI. Wireless connectivity options include Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, and Wi-Fi 6. AKG-branded stereo speakers are present with support for Dolby Atmos.

This Galaxy Note 10+ specs sheet obviously doesn’t make any startling revelations. Much of this has been known already. It just helps make sense of it all. There’s no mention of an IR blaster, though, which some have been hoping for. Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Note 10 on August 7. It’s expected to go on sale from August 23.

Galaxy Fold spotted once again on the streets of India

After much delay, the Galaxy Fold is finally ready for re-launch. Samsung says the much anticipated foldable smartphone is going to hit the market in September this year. And this time around, it is making sure that the device is tested enough in real-world environments ahead of the formal launch.

Galaxy Fold spotted in India again

Earlier this month, the Galaxy Fold was spotted in the hands of a person traveling on the metro in New Delhi, India. The Fold has been spotted in the country once again, though in the hands of a Samsung employee. HC Hong, President and CEO, Samsung Southwest Asia, was spotted with a Galaxy Fold by one of our friends in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Chong was in India on Sunday to attend an industry ceremony for announcing new investments in the state.

In a recent interview, Samsung mobile CEO DJ Koh admitted that the Fold was sent out “before it was ready”. He further revealed that more than 2,000 units of the new Galaxy Fold are currently being mass tested “in all aspects” to avoid repeating the same mistake. Samsung has also made a few design changes to tackle all the issues.

While Samsung is yet to confirm the Galaxy Fold launch details, rumors are that it’ll be limited to select markets initially. India certainly seems to be one of them, along with the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and a few other major markets. And if it does arrive in your neck of the woods, here’s why (and who) we think should consider buying one.

Thanks, Ashutosh Agrahari.
