Samsung refutes rumors of buying a car manufacturer

Samsung has addressed recent rumors which suggested that the company might enter the automotive business as a player. It currently makes technological components for cars that are used by many manufacturers. The rumors suggested that Samsung would actually get into the business of making cars by acquiring a manufacturer. The company has denied it, saying it has no plans to do something like that.

The rumors stemmed from a recent announcement by the company that it would invest over $160 billion in four key future growth areas. The automotive components business is one of those areas. It somehow ended up being perceived as a hint that Samsung is thinking about acquiring a car manufacturer to sell its own electric and self-driving cars.

Samsung not buying a car manufacturer

Some of you will be aware that Samsung did enter the automobile business almost two decades ago. Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee launched a vehicle manufacturing unit called Samsung Motors back in 1994 but the business went bankrupt after the 1997-98 Asian Financial Crisis. The unit was later acquired by Renault in 2000.

Samsung’s investment plans had led to speculation that perhaps it was seeking a return to the business and may look to acquire an existing manufacturer for that purpose. Samsung has confirmed in a message to its workers that it has no plans of doing that and won’t be manufacturing its own electric and self-driving cars.

It will continue to focus on developing displays and chips for a self-driving control system as part of its existing automotive components business. The timely denial might be to avoid sending a wrong signal to global car manufacturers many of which Samsung counts as its customers. They purchase different components from Samsung and its subsidiary Harman International and would have been concerned if one of their suppliers decided to compete with them in the market.

Most Galaxy Note 9 pre-order customers have opted for 512GB storage

Samsung is only offering two storage variants of the Galaxy Note 9. The base model ships with 128GB of storage while customers who want more can purchase the 512GB model. It appears that the latter has been more appealing to pre-order customers. More than half of the Galaxy Note 9 pre-order customers have reportedly picked the 512GB model in Samsung’s home country of South Korea.

512GB Galaxy Note 9

Samsung’s Galaxy Note series has always been aimed at professionals who want to get work done on the move. The Galaxy Note 9 stays true to that ethos and offers features like the 4,000mAh battery and 512GB storage option.

Users won’t be short on storage since the device can also support microSD cards of up to 512GB. This means that with a 512GB microSD card in place, Galaxy Note 9 owners can have a terabyte of storage in their pocket. That’s what seems to be appealing Galaxy Note 9 pre-order customers in South Korea.

According to local reports, more than half of the pre-order customers have picked the 512GB model over the base 128GB model despite its relatively high price of 1.35 million won or ~$1,200. The blue color is said to be the most popular among customers.

It’s unclear which model customers are preferring in other markets across the globe but it can reasonably be assumed that there’s significant interest in the latter. The Galaxy Note faithful have been excited by the arrival of the new flagship because of its biggest selling features which include the battery, higher internal storage and new Bluetooth-equipped S Pen.

Samsung has been taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 9 since last week. It will begin shipping the handset to customers in the coming days. The official Galaxy Note 9 release date is August 24. The company will then start shipping the handset in other countries across the globe as well in the weeks to come.

Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy Tab S4 get ARCore support

ARCore is Google’s software-based augmented reality platform for Android. It’s already supported by several Samsung handsets including but not limited to the Galaxy S9. With the company unveiling new devices in recent weeks, the list has been updated to reflect that the AR platform is also supported by the Galaxy Note 9 and the Galaxy Tab S4.

Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy Tab S4 ARCore support

ARCore enables apps to superimpose computer-generated objects and shapes on the real world when seen through the device’s camera. Users can then move these objects and shapes by either walking around with their device or using the sensors to detect movement.

Since this is a software-based platform it doesn’t require special components to power the augmented reality experience. Google says that ARCore only requires Android 7.0 or later on a device that has shipped with the Google Play Store.

The other Samsung devices that support ARCore include the Galaxy A5 and A7 (2017), Galaxy A6 (2018), Galaxy A8 and Galaxy A8+ (2018), Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. The list has now been updated to confirm that the Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy Tab S4 have support for it as well.

The Galaxy Note 9 has not yet been released. Pre-order customers will get it on August 24 and that’s also when the device will be available in stores. This just confirms that the Galaxy Note 9 will be able to run ARCore apps from the get-go.

Developers have created countless augmented reality apps by leveraging the ARCore platform. In order to check out these AR experiences, users first need to install the ARCore app from the Google Play Store. Many AR apps and games are available on the Play Store now.

Want to get rid of the Galaxy Note 9’s Bixby button? Just pull it out

Samsung introduced the dedicated Bixby button with the Galaxy S8 and even though fans haven’t grown to love it, the company has made it a permanent fixture on its flagship smartphones since then. The Galaxy Note 9 has it as well. If you’re not content with permanently disabling Bixby, you can get rid of the handset’s Bixby button by just pulling it out.

Get rid of the Galaxy Note 9’s Bixby button

Many users have permanently disabled Bixby on their devices and are irked by Samsung’s decision to not allow the button to be remapped. So they have a button on their device that serves no purpose.

YouTuber JerryRigEverything put the Galaxy Note 9 through his trademark durability test and it passed with flying colors. It’s impressively durable and can’t even be flexed with bare hands so there’s little chance of it bending or cracking under pressure. That’s $1,000 well spent if durability is something that you value in a device.

However, an interesting observation is made in the video. The Bixby button is actually removable and it can be pulled off if the right amount of force is applied. This is actually true for every single button on the handset.

It’s pertinent to mention here that these buttons are securely held in place. You don’t have to worry about them randomly falling off even if you drop your device. It’s only when deliberate force is applied to pry the button will it come off.

If you’re particularly bothered by the Bixby button then you may opt for this extreme step. Do keep in mind that you would then be left with a gap on the left frame. It may also affect the efficacy of the handset’s water resistance so this is certainly not recommended.

Pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 9 have been open since last week. Samsung will release the handset in several markets across the globe on August 24. It will then continue to release the device in additional markets in the weeks to come.

Samsung reportedly working on a 17.5″ Galaxy View 2 tablet

Remember the Galaxy View? No? Allow us to rejog your memory. The Galaxy View was a massive Android tablet that Samsung launched nearly three years ago, following an exclusive reveal of the device’s pictures here at SamMobile. The idea was to offer consumers a movable display that isn’t as big as a television but isn’t as small as regular tablets, but the overall implementation left much to be desired. And, according to Android Police, Samsung is finally preparing to unleash the Galaxy View’s successor.

Galaxy View 2 finally on the way?

According to Android Police’s source, the Galaxy View 2 (most likely a tentative name) will have a 17.5-inch display, slightly smaller than the 18.4-inch display of the original. It has a built-in book-like hinge that acts as the stand in two different configurations. The closed configuration raises the screen up at around a 30 degree-angle like a drafting desk, while the open configuration will make the screen stand upright like a laptop. There’s apparently no handle on the View 2 unlike the original Galaxy View, so it’s possible it will have to be carried around as a laptop when the hinge is completely closed.

In terms of specs, the Galaxy View 2 is reportedly going to be in the mid-range category like its predecessor. It could have an unknown Exynos SoC, Full HD display resolution, and 3GB of RAM. Android Police also mentions something about a “novel multi-window functionality” in the software. We’re guessing that would be similar to the Pop Up Window feature or the ability to have more than two apps running side-by-side. DeX support is said to be missing, but that shouldn’t be surprising considering Samsung is only offering DeX functionality on flagship devices. It will, however, run Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box.

Pricing and availability information currently unknown

The Galaxy View 2 is reportedly headed to North American carrier AT&T, although a launch in other regions might happen as well (this is our own speculation). Not that a limited launch would disappoint many, as there isn’t exactly much demand for 17-inch mid-range Android tablets. The original Galaxy View was also priced a tad exorbitantly for what it offered. Android Police doesn’t have anything to offer in terms of pricing or release date information, however, so we will have to wait and see how it all pans out.

China replaces America as the biggest market for Samsung

Samsung’s smartphone market share in China has dropped below 1% in the recent quarters. The company has been struggling to compete with the value-for-money Chinese brands which operate on wafer-thin margins. It has vowed to fight back in the world’s largest smartphone market, but none of its efforts have yielded any results so far.

Despite its abysmal performance in the smartphone market, the company as a whole continues to do exceptionally well in Asia’s largest economy – so well, in fact, China replaced the United States as the biggest market for Samsung Electronics in the first half of 2018.

Industry data reported in the Korea Herald says, out of the 83.9 trillion won ($74.6 billion) sales posted by Samsung Electronics in the first half of 2018, the Chinese market accounted for 27.4 trillion won or 32.7% of revenues, taking the top spot. America’s contribution to Samsung’s overall sales stood at 26%, down from the 31.8% share posted for the whole of 2016.

Samsung’s sales in China keep going up

Samsung’s sales in China kept going up gradually from the 18.5% in 2013 to 20.6% in 2014 to 28.3% in 2017. The company’s improved performance in China is primarily due to its semiconductors business. Strong demand for chips from the Chinese tech companies helped Samsung to grow its business in the country. The report also says recent protectionist policies by the US Govt have hampered Samsung’s sales in the US market.

Huawei, Apple, Verizon Wireless, Deutsche Telekom AG and Hong Kong’s Techtronics are Samsung’s top five buyers in 2018, whereas in 2017 it was Apple, Best Buy, Sprint, Verizon and Deutsche Telekom. Without divulging any details, Samsung said the top five firms accounted for 11% of its total sales in H1 2018.

Apple and Huawei are Samsung’s biggest competitors in the mobile and tablet market. The fact that they are also major customers for divisions within Samsung Electronics goes to show the complex nature of the modern technology arena.

Caviar’s Galaxy Note 9 Fine Gold Edition costs $58,000

Starting at $999 for the base variant, the Galaxy Note 9 is already an expensive device and out of reach for many users, but it still appears ‘cheap’ when compared to the Galaxy Note 9 Fine Gold Edition from the Russia-based Caviar Royal Gift firm.

Clearly aimed at the super-rich who like to flaunt their wealth, the Galaxy Note 9 Fine Gold Edition comes with a custom back panel made with 1 kg of pure gold. Pricing starts at a staggering RUB 3,87 million (~$57,600) for the 128 GB variant. On the plus side, the 512 GB variant costs just $300 more, so do get the higher storage model if you end up buying one.

Caviar also has other ‘cheaper’ Galaxy Note 9 options

If the Fine Gold Edition sounds too expensive, Caviar also has other ‘cheaper’ options priced around RUB 250,000 (~$3,700) with different designs, engravings, and materials. There are a few Galaxy S9 models as well if you are not a fan of Note series.

Looks are subjective, but designs like this Fine Gold Edition can be objectively termed as ugly. Ironically, other ‘cheaper’ designs in the collection look a lot better than the bulky slab of gold. Thankfully, Caviar’s customizations are limited only to the exteriors, so buyers will at least get the same capable Galaxy Note 9 on the inside.

If Caviar’s work interests you, you can check out their store for many such luxury offerings.

Latest Galaxy J6 update brings August 2018 security patch

The cheapest Samsung smartphone with an Infinity Display, the Galaxy J6, is receiving a new firmware update today. Samsung has done a reasonable job of ensuring that the handset remains up-to-date on the software front. The latest Galaxy J6 update has now been rolled out in Europe. The security maintenance release brings the latest security patch for the month of August 2018.

Galaxy J6 update

We concluded in our Galaxy J6 review that it’s easier to ignore the shortcomings of Samsung’s budget handsets with this device. That’s because some of its features do live up to expectations and deliver what the company promises. It gets brownie points for the Infinity Display and praise for its performance in this particular segment.

Be that as it may, the Galaxy J6 is still a budget smartphone so the specs are nothing to write home about. If you’re in the market for an affordable device that’s compact but also has a large display, can last through the day and holds its own in day-to-day tasks, then do consider the Galaxy J6.

Italy is the first market in Europe to receive this latest Galaxy J6 update. Firmware version J600FNXXU3ARH1 is now being rolled out for the handset over-the-air. It’s also available for download from our firmware section.

The security patch for the month of August 2018 includes fixes for four critical Android OS vulnerabilities as well as dozens of high and moderate-risk vulnerabilities. Fixes for 11 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures items found in the company’s proprietary software are included as well.

The other affordable devices that have received the latest security patch so far include the Galaxy A5 (2016). Samsung will gradually release this update in other markets as well where the Galaxy J6 is available.

  • Dimensions: 149.3 x 70.2 x 8.2mm
  • Display: 5.6" (142,2mm) Super AMOLED

First Galaxy Note 9 firmware download available now

The Galaxy Note 9 is yet to be released but Samsung rolled out the first Galaxy Note 9 firmware last week. The update was released over-the-air. We now have the first Galaxy Note 9 firmware available for download from our firmware section. It brings minor improvements such as a new toggle in the Super Slow-mo camera mode.

Galaxy Note 9 firmware download

The first software update for a new device is always an important one as it brings up the firmware to the final retail version. Samsung has done well by rolling it out a few days before the actual release of the new flagship.

The first Galaxy Note 9 update that Samsung released a few days ago adds a toggle in the Super Slow-mo camera mode. The toggle enables users to decide if they want to record 0.2-second or 0.4-second moments in manual mode.

This isn’t exactly a new feature as Samsung introduced this on the Galaxy S9 with a recent update. This toggle was added after another update which had restricted manual mode to recording only 0.4-second moments at 480 frames per second.

Firmware version N960NKSU1ARH5 for the Galaxy Note 9 is now available for download from our firmware section. It’s Android 8.1 Oreo with the latest security patch for the month of August 2018. The firmware is for the Korean variant of the flagship. The relevant files for other variants will be available soon as well.

Samsung is going to release the Galaxy Note 9 on August 24. That’s when pre-order customers will get their units and also when the handset is going to be available from retail stores. Owners will have the update waiting for them to be downloaded once they get their brand new flagship out of the box and connect it to the internet for the first time.

  • Model: SM-N960N
  • Dimensions: 161.9 x 76.4 x 8.8mm
  • Display: 6.4" (162.5mm) Super AMOLED
  • CPU: Exynos 8910
  • Camera: 12 CMOS Dual OIS (F1.5/F2.4) & Telephoto: 12MP AF F2.4)

Galaxy Note 9 pre-orders outperform the Galaxy S9

Samsung’s carrier and retail partners across the globe started taking Galaxy Note 9 pre-orders last week. It was expected that initial sales of the handset might outperform the Galaxy S9, Samsung’s first flagship smartphone of the year. That appears to be the case if a new report out of South Korea is to be believed.

Galaxy Note 9 pre-orders

Even though Samsung said that the Galaxy S9 would outperform sales of the Galaxy S8 it didn’t actually happen. It was reported multiple times over the past few months that the new flagship’s sales were lagging behind its predecessor.

South Koreans were particularly not that enthused about the new flagship due to its lack of substantial upgrades. Samsung did acknowledge in its recent quarterly earnings report that the mobile division’s revenues took a hit due to soft sales of the Galaxy S9.

On the other hand, the Galaxy Note 9 delivers significant improvements compared to its predecessor. Its new features include a massive 4,000mAh battery, 512GB internal storage option and a new Bluetooth-equipped S Pen, among others.

Citing a source from a local mobile carrier, Korean media reports that the Galaxy Note 9 has seen more pre-order sales compared to the Galaxy S9. “The number of preorders for the Galaxy Note 9 is roughly 30 to 50 percent higher than the Galaxy S9,” said the carrier representative.

Despite the strong numbers, the Galaxy Note 9 pre-orders are said to match almost 80 percent of the pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 8 last year. That device was highly anticipated by the Galaxy Note faithful as the Galaxy Note 7 debacle forced the company to skip a generation.

The Galaxy Note 9 pre-orders will end today in South Korea as carriers gear up to ship the devices to customers on August 24. That’s also when it will be available in stores not only in Samsung’s home country but in key markets across the globe as well.
