Themes Thursday: Here are this week’s five best new themes

We’re back one more edition of Themes Thursday! There are plenty of new themes for Galaxy smartphones every week, and we’re here to help you in shortlisting the best ones.

This week, we found five themes interesting, and all of them have been listed below along with their screenshots. The [Binod] PastelUI is a simplistic theme with a brighter UI and rounded square icons. The [Binod] SwanUI has blue as its central color as well as slick icons and an AOD wallpaper.

The [JIN] Lovesome theme pack has a brilliant AOD wallpaper, circular icons, and a great looking wallpaper. The [THENEW] Happy Thanks (AOD/Iris)_Lee Dhan theme looks good too, and it will suit those who are looking to buy a darker UI theme. The Berlin _MINDON Design theme looks interesting too.

Which new theme pack did you end up downloading on your Galaxy smartphone?

Galaxy Note 8 user manual in English available now

Samsung is going to release the Galaxy Note 8 in a handful of markets across the globe tomorrow. Pre-ordered units have already been shipped in several markets. Customers will also be able to walk into a store and purchase a Galaxy Note 8 from tomorrow.

The company recently confirmed that the Galaxy Note 8 has broken pre-order records for the phablet lineup. That was to be expected, given that this is Samsung’s first new flagship Galaxy Note handset in over two years.

If you’re someone who likes going through the user manual of a new device, then you will be interested to take a look at the Galaxy Note 8 user manual. The official user manual for the Galaxy Note 8 (SM-N950F) is now available in English.

The manual has 289 pages that cover everything from device layout and functions to transferring data from a previous device and troubleshooting various issues. It also provides information on various features like Samsung Pay, Dual Messenger, Game Launcher, Always On Display and more.

The official Galaxy Note 8 user manual is now available for download in English. It’s only a matter of time before the full user manual is available in other languages as well.

Don’t forget to check our hands-on with the Galaxy Note 8. We’ll have a full review of the new flagship up for you in the near future.

Daily Deal: Take 73% off a first-generation Gear 360

Amazon has temporarily slashed the price of the first-generation Gear 360, which is Samsung’s award-winning camera that’s capable of taking 360-degree photographs and videos, down to just $94.99 (73% off).

If you want to take advantage of this promotion, hit the Buy Now button below. We strongly advise you to hurry though, as Amazon only has a limited amount of inventory available — and once it’s gone, it’s gone.

Samsung launches a $300m Automotive Innovation Fund

Samsung has set aside $300 million to invest in automotive start-ups and autonomous driving technologies, according to The Financial Times. The firm will use its Automotive Innovation Fund to provide companies with the funding required to develop sensors, machine vision and safety solutions.

The first recipient of investment from the Automotive Innovation Fund will be TTTech, an Austrian technology company that provides software integration for automated driving platforms, which has already been working with Audi, specifically on the upcoming Audi 8, to create an automated driving platform.

Even though Samsung holds a license for on-road testing of autonomous vehicles in California and South Korea, it has no plans to enter the car manufacturing market. It is, instead, focusing on the software side of things, throwing money at (and acquiring) companies attempting to revolutionize the industry.

Samsung says its goal is to assist in the development of technology that can “make cars safer while creating a more comfortable and convenient mobility experience,” but obviously it won’t be doing that for free. Like any business-driven investor, it’s expecting a healthy return.

Verizon Galaxy S5 gets August security patch

Samsung has been doing a good job of rolling out security updates even for devices that you might think would no longer receive updates. Take the Galaxy S5 for example. It was released more than three years ago in April 2014. Then again, it’s still the most popular Samsung smartphone in the US. It has now received the August 2017 security patch on Verizon.

Firmware version G900VVRU2DQH2 is now being rolled out for the Galaxy S5 on Verizon for customers in the United States. The changelog mentions that this update brings the August 2017 security patch. It also fixes an issue where the device was unable to connect and pair with some Bluetooth Low Energy devices.

The update doesn’t bring much in the way of new features. It can’t be expected to given that the Galaxy S5 is no longer eligible for major platform updates. It will not be upgraded from Marshmallow.

The August 2017 security patch features fixes for 12 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) that were discovered in the company’s own software. Patches for 28 vulnerabilities in the Android operating system are also included.

Verizon is now rolling out this firmware update for the Galaxy S5 on its network over-the-air. Those who own this handset on the largest mobile carrier in the United States will soon receive an OTA update notification.

Samsung Pay could launch in South Africa later this month

Samsung Pay will launch in South Africa on September 22, which just so happens to be the same day the much-anticipated Galaxy Note 8 is scheduled to hit the shelves in the region, according to Craige Fletcher, Head of Mobile at Samsung Electronics SA.

It’s unclear what banks and credit unions will be supported when Samsung Pay debuts in South Africa, but it’s safe to assume that everyone will be able to take advantage of the platform on launch day by using PayPal as their preferred payment method.

Once they’ve linked their PayPal account to Samsung Pay, customers will be able to spend their virtual Balance in any brick-and-mortar retail store, earning reward points for every transaction processed using the immensely-popular mobile payment platform.

As we’ve said in the past, Samsung Pay is compatible with a slew of Galaxy-branded smartphones, including the Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S6, Galaxy J7 Pro and Galaxy J7 (2016)—but support varies region by region.

While we’d recommend adding the September 22 release date to your diary, it would probably best to use a pencil as it’s likely possible that Samsung’s running behind schedule (it’s happened before, and it’ll happen again).

Thanks, Kwetsima!
