Samsung Ventures pours money into Nanosys, a Quantum Dot display manufacturer

Nanosys, a manufacturer of Quantum Dot displays, has confirmed that it has received an investment from Samsung Venture Investment Corporation. SVIC is the venture capital arm of the Samsung Group and this latest round of funding is a follow-up on the investment made back in 2010. Nanosys is going to use the new funds for expanding production capacity as demand for its displays grows rapidly.

The company has not revealed the exact amount of funding that it has received from Samsung Venture Investment Corporation, it has only confirmed that the funds will be used to expand production capacity. Some of the company’s customers for its Quantum Dot display technology include TCL, Changhong and Hisense. Michael Pachos, director at SVC, said: “Our investment in Nanosys is consistent with our strategy to work closely with established market leaders.”

US Cellular rolls out Android 5.0.2 for the Galaxy Tab S 10.5

It was only a couple of weeks ago that the Lollipop roll out by carriers in the United States started for the Galaxy Tab S 10.5, the four major carriers have got the update out of their system by now and only US cellular remained. Today it too has followed through, Galaxy Tab S 10.5 owners on US Cellular are receiving the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update today.

As mentioned on Samsung’s support site, software version T807R4TYUBOE5 is being rolled out by US Cellular today and it brings up the tablet to Android 5.0.2. The update brings features and improvements like Material Design user interface with more personalization options and fluid animations, better security features, an improved notifications experience and overall performance improvements. Even though US Cellular had rolled out this update today it may not reach all users immediately. Carriers in the US tend to release software updates in phases so it could very take up to a few days for the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 Lollipop update to go live for all US Cellular users across the country.

Newest Samsung Galaxy S6 commercial gives artistic take on “The New Phone Feeling”

Samsung’s commercials have been a strength of the company for some time now, but that statement doesn’t override the weird moments we’ve all witnessed when Samsung botches up a product. The Broadway performance of the Galaxy S4 presentation, for example, left a weird taste in the mouths of CNET’s own Molly Wood as well as other diehard Samsung fans. One in particular said that every time he picked up his Galaxy S4 after that, he quickly put it down because of the nonstop Broadway singing he continued to hear in his head months after the smartphone arrived on the market.

If you still have nightmares about the Galaxy S4 Broadway presentation from two years ago, get ready to be slightly more terrified. The company has a new video on its YouTube page for the Galaxy S6 – and it’s the most interesting (yet weird) take on the new phone I’ve ever seen.

The company decided to take the Galaxy S6 and make it an “instrument” in the song by Liz titled “When I Rule the World.” The goal is to connect you, the user, to the new phone feeling that you have when you pull your new phone out of the box. Some people want to use certain features of the new phone repetitively the first time because they think they’re cool, they like the fact that they have certain capabilities, and so on. I think we all know what that feeling is like.

In Samsung’s commercial, the new Galaxy S6 user removes the plastic wrapper from her smartphone, turns her phone on, scrolls through her screens, snaps multiple pics, one after the other, and even turns the phone over in her hand multiple times. Liz’s “When I rule the world, I, I rule the world” repetition at the end of the song, followed by the last words, “When I tell you to stop – stop” merges the new phone feeling with the user’s ability to command his or her smartphone to do something more than once.

The Galaxy S6 stays on beat in the song, no doubt, and using your smartphone to add a little instrumentation to a song can be fun. However, the song itself is definitely not the choice I would’ve made for the commercial. Whatever you think of the latest commercial, just be grateful that you’re not in a front row seat at the infamous Broadway performance. You can check out the controversial commercial at the link below.

Get a sneak peek at exclusive Jurassic World content on Samsung SUHD TVs at Best Buy

The latest addition to the hugely popular Jurassic franchise will hit theaters in the very near future but fans are certainly finding it hard to contain their excitement since they have had to wait for a very long time for the new movie. One can watch the trailers only so many times before the craving to see more comes up again, fortunately Samsung has got Jurassic fans covered. It has teamed up with Universal Pictures to provide fans with a “big reveal” on its latest SUHD TVs that are on display at more than 500 Best Buy stores across the United States.

An exclusive clip from the Jurassic World clip will be shown to fans at more than 500 Best Buy stores in the US on Samsung’s SUHD TVs. The clip can only be seen at Samsung Entertainment Experiences at Best Buy stores. Obviously the clip won’t divulge much about the film’s plot or storyline, but it’s a good tactic on Samsung’s part to get more eyeballs trained at its SUHD TVs which were only unveiled at CES earlier this year. As for the film itself, Jurassic World will be released on June 12.

Galaxy Tab S 8.4 LTE gets Lollipop on Verizon

It has only been a couple of weeks since Verizon released the Android 5.0.2 update for the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 and now it’s following through with Lollipop for the Galaxy Tab S 8.4. Samsung has confirmed that Verizon is releasing said update for the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 today, users in the United States should start getting update notifications on their tablets shortly.

Software version T707VVRU1BOD4 being rolled out by Verizon today brings the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 LTE on its network up to Android 5.0.2. The update brings with it all of the features and improvements that we have come to expect from Lollipop, including but not limited to the new notifications experience, Material Design UI, performance improvements and much more. The file size is going to be around 1GB since this is a major update after all, so users will certainly require some patience when they’re downloading it particularly on a slow internet connection. It shouldn’t take more than a few hours for Verizon to be done with the Lollipop roll out for the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 LTE.

Samsung official says the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge are selling well

Is Samsung’s business really imploding? If we go by the sales of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, then that might not be the case. An unnamed Samsung executive has told The Korea Times that the two Galaxy S6 flagships are selling well and that the sales are meeting the company’s internal target. According to the official, 305,000 units of both devices are being sold every day since they went up for sale, more than 124,000 and 241,000 units of the Galaxy S5 and S4 respectively.

Samsung is yet to officially reveal how much the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge units it has sold, but is expected to do so next month. A report last month had said that shipments of the Galaxy S6 lineup had reached 10 million units, but didn’t offer concrete information on exactly when that shipment figure had been reached. Samsung has always been pretty quick at announcing when its flagships reach a particular sales milestone, but its silence on the matter regarding the S6 and S6 edge suggest things might not be going that fast, though that could possibly be because the company is selling two different flagship smartphones at the same time and wants to individually confirm sales figures for each.

“Okay, Google” command is back and working on the Galaxy S6 and the S6 edge

Did you try to activate the “Okay, Google” command on your Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 edge, but never found a way to do it? Well, Google accepted that there was indeed a problem, but they have now verified that the hotword is working again.

The hotword detection was broken for weeks, and the option to activate it was totally missing from the settings. Some users believed that it was an intentional omission by Samsung, but it isn’t completely true. It turns out that it was just an old bug, or what you can see as a conflict between Google app and S Voice. A Google representative mentioned on the company’s forum that the bug has been fixed. In order to get the feature working, users need to have the latest version of Google app (v4.6) installed on their devices.

If you still can’t get it working, you might need to clear the cache, or even clear the data. If you activate the option to enable “Okay, Google” from any screen, S Voice will be disabled, except for the times when the screen is off. Many users that I know have disabled the S Voice altogether as they prefer Google Now over Samsung’s solution. Do let us know if the hotword detection is working on your Galaxy S6 or S6 edge.

Galaxy S5 Android 5.0.2 update will arrive later this month

A few weeks back it was reported that Samsung will release micro-updates for some of its devices that faced various issues following the update to Lollipop. Information made public on the website of Optus, the Australian carrier, reveals that the Galaxy S5 is going to receive one of those micro-updates later this month. Android 5.0.2 has now entered testing with Optus.

It’s going to be a minor update for the Galaxy S5 (SM-G900) and will probably only include bug fixes and performance improvements. The update is meant to fix some of the issues that users have faced after jumping on the initial Lollipop update. So far Samsung has not provided a confirmed release date for Android 5.0.2 for the Galaxy S5 in other markets across the globe, Optus says that it will roll out the update in “early June.”

Samsung successfully demonstrates world’s first Public Safety LTE network

Today, Samsung successfully demonstrated world’s first Public Safety solution over LTE technology that is based on the newly released 3GPP Rel.12 standard.

The technology was demonstrated live at the company’s Digital City in Suwon, South Korea. The company showcased how its PS-LTE solution could be used for connectivity during an emergency situations such as a huge disaster. More than 80 devices were connected to the network, and HD voice was transmitted between them simultaneously during the demonstration. If in case such a disastrous situation arrives, HD voice, multimedia Push-To-Talk (PTT) as well as video conference services could be provided to relevant parties such as rescue teams.

The live demonstration of our PS-LTE solution is a significant achievement,” said Youngky Kim, President and Head of Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “It takes us one step closer to successfully participating and building the world’s first nationwide Public Safety network with LTE Technology, and we are confident in accomplishing this thanks to our leading product portfolio and constant innovation.

Even though the new standard was completed and released less than three months ago, Samsung managed to demonstrate complete end-to-end services over it, complete with a newly developed base station, LTE core, IMS core, application server, and compatible devices.

Samsung aims to achieve even more with the Release 13 specification by providing new features such as Mission Critical Push-to-Talk (MCPTT), Isolated E-UTRAN Operation for Public Safety (IOPS), and enhanced device-to-device (eD2D) standardization.

Samsung SM-G9198 (Philipe) might actually be a flip phone for Chinese market

The Samsung SM-G9198 that leaked last was suspected to be the Galaxy S6 Mini, but looks like it might a different device altogether.

If you remember (well, we don’t actually hope that many would), Samsung released the SM-G9098 – a clamshell Android smartphone with dual displays – in China last year. It is completely possible that the recently leaked SM-G9198 might be a successor to that clamshell smartphone.

If it this speculation turns out to be true, the device might only be launched in China, and will feature dual displays. Other hardware specifications include a 4.6-inch HD display, a Snapdragon 808 processor with Adreno 418 GPU, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, a 16-megapixel primary camera, and a 5-megapixel secondary camera. The device was leaked running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

If the device is not the Galaxy S6 Mini, as speculated by many, hopes of someone who wants a powerful mini smartphone from Samsung would be destroyed.

Investment bank analyst claims that Samsung’s business is imploding

An Oppenheimer analyst has claimed in the investment bank’s letter to its client that Samsung’s current-generation flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge, have turned out to be failures. The letter also mentioned that the South Korean smartphone giant’s business is “imploding“.

Samsung managed to ship about 10 million Galaxy S6 devices till now, a million units less than what it managed with the Galaxy S5 last year. However, it’s worth noticing that Samsung managed to ship around 83 million smartphones last quarter, dethroning Apple, becoming the largest smartphone brand in the world during Q1 2015.

When we look at Samsung’s flagship in 2015, the Galaxy S6 Edge, almost all of its differentiators fall back to hardware: a cutting-edge CPU, curved display, iPhone-like metal casing, front area fingerprint sensor, and camera with OIS. At the same time, we see little improvement in Samsung’s software user experience, and no value-added to existing Samsung users who are on prior generations of devices.

- Oppenheimer’s letter to its clients

Read more: Despite Samsung’s success, bias keeps company down

In its letter, the investment bank states that Samsung made a mistake by focussing solely on the hardware of its flagship devices, and that they saw little improvement on the software and user experience front, which appears to be silly. We all know (in fact, every other reviewer and expert accpeted) that Samsung has made huge strides in terms of software with the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge by removing unnecessary features and speeding up the user interface.
