Five useful App Pairs for your Galaxy Note 8

Galaxy Note owners have long been able to take advantage of the phablet’s large screen real estate to open two apps side-by-side. Samsung made the process of launching two apps simultaneously easier with the Galaxy Note 8. The new flagship has a feature called App Pair. Users can easily create pairings that will always launch two apps side-by-side with just one tap.

We’ve made a list of five useful App Pairs for the Galaxy Note 8. This list is by no means exhaustive, and you can create your own pairings to get the most out of the feature. Before we talk about our suggestions, let’s take a look at how you can create App Pairs on the Galaxy Note 8.

How to create an App Pair on Galaxy Note 8

Before you can take advantage of this feature, you need to know how to create an App Pair. Follow the steps below.

Step 1: Open the Apps Edge panel on any screen by swiping the Edge panel to the left (or to the right if you have the Edge panel located on the left of the display).

Step 2: Tap the + sign on one of the empty slots. If all slots are already assigned to shortcuts, you can press and hold one of the existing shortcuts and delete it.

Step 3: Now, hit the Create App Pair option at the top right of the screen.

Step 4: Select two apps from the list (you only need to tap once on each app). The first app will appear at the top and the second at the bottom when these apps are opened in split-screen view.

Step 5: Tap on Done to save the app pair. Repeat the above steps to add more app pairs.

Five useful App Pairs for the Galaxy Note 8

The pairings that have been created can be accessed by opening the Edge panel and going to the Apps Edge screen. Now, let’s take a look at five App Pairs that we think would be handy.

Camera + Gallery

This is a no-brainer. This app pair will launch the Camera and Gallery apps side-by-side, enabling you to capture and manage your photos simultaneously. It makes life easier as you don’t have to deal with minimizing and relaunching apps.

Waze + Spotify

For those of you who like to stream music in the car, this pairing enables you to keep an eye on traffic information with Waze while streaming your favorite tunes from the world’s most popular music streaming service. Waze can also be replaced with Google Maps, while Spotify can be replaced by your favorite music streaming app.

Message + WhatsApp

Have to juggle between text messages and WhatsApp? This pairing will prevent you from going crazy because you won’t have to switch back and forth between these apps. Also works with any other instant messaging app.

Phone + Email

This is a great pairing for those who really like to be productive on the move. You won’t have to worry about catching up on emails no matter how long the phone call goes on. We just don’t mean the standard email app here – you can also use Gmail or any other email client.

Google Translate + Google Maps

Find yourself lost in a new city? Use this app pairing to find your way back and even ask for help from the locals along the way.

Samsung Pay update in India brings support for UPI payments via Bharat QR codes

Samsung Pay is getting a new update in India today, following one just three weeks ago. With the latest version, users will be able to use their Samsung phone to pay at merchants that support the country’s UPI payment system by scanning barcodes. UPI, or Unified Payments Interface, is a Government of India initiative that lets people make payments and transfer money with even a basic phone as long as it is connected to a network operator, and it is now being enabled for merchants and retailers.

Merchants in the country will be able to opt for barcodes through the Bharat QR Code initiative; these barcodes will work just like the ones for wallets like Paytm, and Samsung Pay is getting in on the action early with support for Bharat QR code. In addition to Bharat QR Code support, the new update to Samsung Pay also brings Android Oreo compatibility, but that’s not new and has already been made available with the last update. The Oreo beta for India (and other phase two countries) is yet to start, but once it does, Galaxy S8 users should be able to use Samsung Pay without issues.

The Samsung Pay update notification should pop up as soon as you open Samsung Pay. If it doesn’t, you can go to the app’s settings, hit the About Samsung Pay tab, then hit Update.

Thanks, Imaduddin!

Galaxy S8 Active now available on Sprint and T-Mobile

Sprint and T-Mobile have today launched their respective carrier-branded variants of the Galaxy S8 Active in the United States, following the handset’s debut through AT&T, the former exclusive carrier for Active devices, at the beginning of August.

How much is Galaxy S8 Active through Sprint?

The Galaxy S8 Active is available to purchase from both Sprint’s nationwide brick-and-mortar retail spaces and online store, with pricing reduced to $17.71 per month (50 percent off) on a two-year Sprint Flex plan to celebrate Black Friday.

How much is the Galaxy S8 Active through T-Mobile?

T-Mobile, on the other hand, is only selling the device through its online portal for now where it’s available for $820 outright—or $30 per month with $100 down when you spread the cost over two years. Offline sales will commence on November 22.

What’s the difference between the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Active?

For those in need of a refresher, the Galaxy S8 Active is near-identical to the Galaxy S8; it features a Snapdragon 835 CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 12MP rear-facing camera, and ships running Android 7.1.1 Nougat (upgradable to Android 8.0 Oreo).

There are a couple of notable differences, however.

Samsung has, for example, swapped the unit’s meagre 3,000mAh battery with a 4,000mAh one, introduced a flat Infinity Display and replaced its elegant glass body with a military-grade polycarbonate shell.

The Galaxy S8 Active is also the first Active handset to come with a (tiresome) Bixby button, instead of a programmable Active key, which is a decision that’s bound to deter many potential customers.

With that in mind, we’d love to know whether you’re planning on picking up the ruggedized Galaxy S8 Active. Be sure to let us know in the comments section below—or over on Facebook or Twitter.

Samsung launches a dedicated Newsroom for fans in South Africa

Samsung has launched a new Newsroom for its fans in South Africa, making it easier for them to keep up-to-date with business insights, company news and product announcements—but strangely, it isn’t offering a translation to Afrikaans.

Related: Samsung expands Newsroom initiative with one for the United Kingdom

The company took to its Global Newsroom on Friday to promote the platform, noting that it’s the sixteenth Newsroom it’s launched, following the Global Newsroom and local editions in a number of regions, including Korea and the US.

Don’t give up on SamMobile!

As we’ve said in the past, Samsung merely uses its Newsrooms to publish press releases—so you most definitely won’t find any leaks there. For the latest news, leaks and opinions, be sure to keep your browser pointed to SamMobile.

Samsung promotes key executives in India amid big investment plans

We recently pointed out how Xiaomi is giving a tough time to Samsung in the lucrative Indian smartphone market. The company is reportedly revamping its strategy to take on the Chinese rival. Samsung has now announced that it has elevated two important local executives to new leadership roles amid big investment plans.

The company is aiming for further growth in the Indian smartphone market while consolidating its impressive gains. One of the ways it intends to achieve that is by increasing its production capacity in the country.

Samsung India’s executive shake up

Samsung has announced today that the head of its mobile division in India has been promoted to Global Vice President. Dipesh Shah, the managing director of Samsung R&D Institute in Bengaluru, has been promoted to Global Senior Vice President. Both executives will remain based in India and will continue to lead their respective divisions.

Samsung has been improving and consolidating its position in India over the past few years, Warsi said recently. He also mentioned that Samsung will continue to invest more and will focus on creating devices that are customized for Indian conditions.

The company recently announced a significant investment in the expansion of its Noida manufacturing plant. The expansion will see the production capacity for mobile phones and consumer electronics being doubled. This may ultimately help Samsung consolidate its position in both key segments of the market.

The service is available in select US cities and enables subscribers to stream live TV without requiring a conventional cable subscription.

The support page for YouTube TV doesn’t list the specific smart TV models that are supported. It does mention that 2016 and 2017 models will be able to run the app.

YouTube TV for Samsung smart TVs

YouTube TV is a standalone TV streaming service. It enables subscribers to watch live TV from more than 40 networks, including full lineups from FOX, CBS, ABC, NBC, ESPN and more.

Galaxy J2 Pro (2017) and Galaxy J5 Prime (2017) surface in benchmark listings

Samsung’s upcoming successors to the Galaxy J2 Pro and Galaxy J5 Prime have been spotted on a couple of benchmarking databases, revealing some details about their respective internals—but before we go any further, we should point out benchmark results are easy to falsify, so best the following information with a pinch of salt.

The Galaxy J2 Pro (2017), according to its Geekbench listing, is equipped with a 1.4GHz Snapdragon 430 quad-core processor and 1.5GB of RAM. It also ships running Android 7.1.1 Nougat skinned with Samsung’s Experience—formerly known as TouchWiz—user interface, though it should receive the Android 8.0 Oreo update.

Related: Samsung’s preparing to launch the Galaxy J2 Pro (2017) in Africa

The Galaxy J5 Prime (2017), on the other hand, features a 4.8-inch HD display (1,280 x 720 pixels), an Exynos 7570 processor, 3GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera, an 8-megapixel front-facing shooter and—just like the Galaxy J2 Pro (2017)—will come pre-loaded with Android 7.1.1 Nougat.

That’s about all the information included in the benchmark filings. The Galaxy J2 Pro (2017) was recently certified by the Federal Communications Commission and Wi-Fi Alliance, so it’s safe to assume that it will hit the shelves before the year’s out. There’s no word on a release date for the Galaxy J5 Prime (2017), however.
