Galaxy S9+ tops the global bestsellers list in April

According to the data from Counterpoint Research, Galaxy S9+ was the bestselling smartphone globally in April. Its smaller sibling, the Galaxy S9, came in second, pushing Apple’s iPhone X to the third spot. Strong sales in Asia Pacific and North American markets reportedly helped the Galaxy S9 series to snatch the top rankings. Since April marks the first full month of the Galaxy S9 duo’s availability, it shouldn’t be surprising to see them dominate the sales charts.

Coming to the numbers, the report says the Galaxy S9 and S9+ accounted for 2.6% each of all global smartphone sales in April, occupying the first two spots (the report seems to be rounding off the percentages). The iPhone X and iPhone 8+ grabbed the next two spots with a market share of 2.3% each.

Apple still dominates the list

Xiaomi’s Redmi 5A and Redmi 5 Plus/Note 5 also made it to the bestsellers list with 1.5 percent and 1.4 percent market shares respectively. What makes Xiaomi’s performance impressive is that unlike Samsung and Apple, the company currently operates only in a select few markets and is still able to make a mark in the global sales rankings.

Apart from the current Galaxy flagships, last year’s Galaxy S8 is the only other Samsung device on the list. Overall, Apple dominates the bestsellers list with five models, followed by three devices from Samsung and two from Xiaomi.

Do remember, as with any other market reports, these findings may not be entirely accurate and thus shouldn’t be taken at face value.

Samsung takes the top spot in the ‘Asia’s Top 1000 Brands’ survey

In the annual ‘Asia’s Top 1000 Brands’ online survey conducted by Campaign Asia-Pacific and Nielsen, Samsung Electronics has emerged as the best brand in Asia in 2018 for the seventh consecutive year. The study covered 17 major product categories including consumer electronics, retail, financial services, e-commerce, F&B, automotive, etc., and 79 sub-categories to gauge brand value.

Spanned across 13 markets

The survey which spanned across 13 markets – Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam – had 400 participants in each market, barring India and China where the sample size was 800 and 1,200 respectively. The survey took age, gender, and monthly household income into consideration to make it more representative.

The following two questions were posed to the participants in the survey:

  1. When you think of the following category, which is the best brand that comes to your mind? By best, we mean the one that you trust the most or the one that has the best reputation in the category.
  2. Apart from the best brand that you entered, which brand do you consider to be the second-best brand in the category?

“Samsung is extremely honored to be receiving this award once again – the award is an indicator of our consumers’ support towards us and the products and services that we offer,” said Steve Lee, President and CEO of Samsung Electronics Southeast Asia & Oceania.

June 2018 security patch out for the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 (2017)

Samsung detailed the June 2018 security patch yesterday so it can now get down to the business of rolling out the latest security maintenance release to compatible devices. As expected, the rollout begins with the company’s mid-range smartphones. It has started rolling out the June 2018 security patch for the Galaxy A3 (2017) and the Galaxy A5 (2017).

We have been witnessing the company actually release the latest security update for one or two devices several days before it officially details the patch. That’s what happened with the Galaxy A3 (2017) earlier this week. It received an update which not only fixed the Wi-Fi reboot issues that users were facing after updating to Oreo but also included the latest security patch.

Latest security patch out now for the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 (2017)

The latest security maintenance release for the Galaxy A3 (2017) in now available in more markets. Samsung has rolled it out (firmware version ) in Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan so far. The firmware is available for download from our database.

It has also started rolling out the June 2018 security patch for the Galaxy A5 (2017) but it’s only available in one market right now. Samsung has released firmware version A520FXXU4CREF in the United Arab Emirates. It’s rolling out over-the-air in the country and is also available for download from our firmware section.

The security maintenance release for the month of June 2018 fixes five critical vulnerabilities in the Android OS in addition to many high-risk and moderate-risk vulnerabilities. There were only three vulnerabilities in Samsung’s own software that needed fixing this time around.

Expect Samsung to roll out the June 2018 security patch to more devices in the days to come.

2018 Galaxy J3 and Galaxy J7 launched in the United States

We have been reporting for a couple of months now that Samsung will soon be releasing new low-cost Galaxy J handsets in the United States and it has done just that today. Samsung has launched the 2018 models of the Galaxy J3 and Galaxy J7 in the United States and confirmed that they will be available for purchase through the company’s retail and carrier partners starting in early June and throughout the summer.

The press release is a little light on the specifications but does mention that the Galaxy J3 features a 5.0-inch HD display while the Galaxy J7 has a “phablet-sized” 5.5-inch HD display which most likely means that it’s a 720p panel. The Galaxy J3 also features an 8-megapixel f/1.9 rear and 5-megapixel f/2.2 front camera. The Galaxy J7 kicks things up a notch in the camera department with a 13-megapixel f/1.9 front and 13-megapixel f/1.7 rear camera.

Samsung is a bit stingy on the details

The specs are obviously nothing to write home about but then again, it’s not like you can expect much from entry-level devices. Samsung hasn’t revealed in the press release what processors these devices have, how much RAM they have got and how much storage is present onboard. It doesn’t even mention if the devices will come with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box which has been suggested by earlier reports.

Since last year’s Galaxy J3 was launched on all four major carriers it’s possible that the latest iteration of the device may be offered by Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint as well. The same may hold true for the Galaxy J7 as well but since Samsung hasn’t confirmed the carrier and retail partners who will carry this device, potential customers will have to wait a bit more to find out where they can actually buy these handsets.

The prices have not been confirmed as well but given that last year’s Galaxy J3 and Galaxy J7 cost $149.99 and $219.99 respectively, the 2018 models will likely be priced in the same range.

Exclusive: Here’s some of the functionality the Bixby Speaker could offer

The Bixby Speaker is one of those rare products that Samsung execs have openly admitted to be working on. But it’s also a product that hasn’t been the subject of any leaks or rumors. It’s expected to be released sometime in the second half of this year, though reports have also suggested that might not happen. But those reports may not have been entirely accurate, as based on the information we’ve received, the Bixby Speaker is already shaping up to be quite the feature-packed device, as most of Samsung’s products usually are.

Bixby Speaker should be feature-loaded from the beginning

First and foremost, our sources tell us the Bixby Speaker is codenamed Lux. An odd codename for a speaker, but it might be because the Bixby Speaker also has a display. We’re told it has some gesture-based functionality, such as being able to double tap to zoom or flicking to scroll through a list, though that’s about everything we know for now. When it comes to the audio part of the device, well, our information suggests the Bixby Speaker will be like Google Home but with a few extra pieces of functionality thrown in.

When the speaker is set up, it will ask the user its preferred music service. Spotify will be an option, and possibly a local Korean music service called Melon. Like Google Home, users will be able to play audio on multiple Bixby Speakers at the same time in multiple rooms, with the ability to individually control volumes for each speaker or modify the volumes at the same time. Samsung is also building in a feature that would let the user change the direction the sound is played in. The user would be able to manually select if sound should be directed towards the left or the right, and there’s apparently an automatic detection method as well.

There’s no telling how that would work, though Wi-Fi beamforming is one method that Samsung may use to detect which side of the room the user’s smartphone is in. There may even be infrared sensors for the same, as one of Samsung’s patent applications had suggested. The speaker will also apparently have the ability to carry out a set of actions once it detects the user leaving or entering a room. This may simply detect whether a smartphone has connected to or disconnected from the same Wi-Fi network the speaker is on, although we aren’t privy of the exact details.

Bixby will play a huge part, of course

Speaking of actions, the Bixby Speaker will naturally have Bixby built in. Our sources tell us it will work exactly how it does on Samsung’s smartphones. You could say ‘Hi Bixby’ to wake the speaker up and ask it about the weather, set a calendar event or alarm, or call an Uber or order a coffee from the nearest Starbucks. If you’re not okay with others using the speaker to carry out their orders, there will be an option to lock it to your voice.

If the voice giving the commands isn’t the same, nothing will happen. This would work for things like Bluetooth calls or changing the song playing on Spotify (you probably know how irritating it can be when someone else takes control of the music if you own a Google Home), and possibly commands that let you control other Samsung smart devices in your home. The Bixby Speaker will be managed through Samsung’s SmartThings app, so you can expect it to tie in to the company’s IoT-focused appliances should you own one or several of them.

And yes, you read that right: The Bixby Speaker will also be able to make calls for you by connecting to your phone over Bluetooth. It’s basic Bluetooth functionality from what we’re told, with the speaker needing permission to even download your contacts, just as the stereo in your car would require. Bluetooth would also be one of the methods of connecting to the speaker, just like it is on Google Home and the Amazon Echo.

When is the Bixby Speaker going to launch?

We’re afraid that’s something only Samsung can answer, although we shouldn’t rule out an announcement alongside the Galaxy Note 9. There’s also no telling what the official name of the speaker will be; Bixby Speaker is just something everyone is using at the moment for lack of an actual title. We should also point out that while we have a fair amount of confidence in our source, some of the functionality described above may or may not be part of the final product and some things may change later on in the development process.

Not that we don’t expect the Bixby Speaker to be so feature-heavy out of the box. It will be going up against competition that has been in the game for longer, and other than the lack of voice support for most languages, Bixby itself has been quite capable from the beginning as well. Just how good or useful all of the functionality will be remains to be seen, and the rumor mill will hopefully help us make further sense of everything Samsung’s upcoming smart speaker will bring to the table.

What do you think? Are you looking forward to Bixby Speaker, or is it something you could care less about? Get a discussion going in the comments!

Galaxy S7 and S7 edge Oreo update now rolling out in India

Samsung first released the Galaxy S7 Oreo update in the United Kingdom last month but ended up halting the rollout soon after to fix an issue. It then started rolling out the update a few days after that and has now been taking its sweet time in bringing Oreo for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge to other markets.

The wait finally ends for those who own these handsets in India as Samsung has finally started rolling out the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge Oreo update in India. The firmware is also being rolled out for the handsets in the United Arab Emirates.

Galaxy S7 and S7 edge Oreo update

The update has so far been released in Samsung’s home country of South Korea as well as Sweden and other Nordic countries which got it just last week. It’s now time for users in India and the United Arab Emirates to get a taste of Oreo on their devices as well.

Samsung is now rolling out firmware version G930FXXU2EREM and G935FXXU2EREM for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge respectively. The firmware weighs in at 1.4GB which is to be expected from a major Android platform update.

It brings all of the features that users have come to expect from Android 8.0 as well as Samsung Experience 9.0 which is the company’s own custom skin for Android that adds a variety of new features to the handsets as well.

The latest firmware update for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge being rolled out in India and the United Arab Emirates features the April 2018 security patch as well. It’s only a matter of time now before Samsung starts rolling out this update in other markets across the globe as well.

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge owners in India and the United Arab Emirates should keep their eyes open for an over-the-air update notification as one should be landing on their device shortly if it hasn’t already. The firmware can also be downloaded from our database for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge.

Thanks, Dharun!
