Galaxy Note 7 may have the same Exynos processor as the Galaxy S7

Samsung is going to officially launch the Galaxy Note 7 tomorrow and we will finally find out when this handset is going to be available. A new report reiterates the specifications of the upcoming flagship and also mentions that the Galaxy Note 7 is going to have the same Exynos 8890 processor which powers the Galaxy S7. Previous reports suggest that the Galaxy Note 7 will be powered by the Snapdragon 823 in the United States and China while the other markets get a handset which has the Exynos 8893 processor.

The Exynos 8893 is believed to be an overclocked version of the existing Exynos 8890 processor but this report claims that the Galaxy Note 7 is going to use the same 2.3GHz Exynos 8890 processor found in the Galaxy S7, at least in Europe. There have been a lot of rumors about 6GB RAM for Galaxy Note 7 but it’s being said once again that Samsung is sticking with 4 gigs of memory. Additional specifications include the same rear and front cameras that you’ll find on the Galaxy S7, a USB Type-C port, a 3,500mAh battery as well as Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. We’ve already told you what the price in Europe is going to be, it’s likely that the handset will be rolled out in markets across the continent in the third week of this month.

Samsung could possibly use LG parts for Galaxy S flagship smartphones

Samsung sources components from a variety of Korean and Chinese suppliers but it doesn’t have a significant relationship of this kind with local rival LG. That could change in the near future as news reports out of Korea suggest that the company is in talks with LG Innotek – the component arm of LG Group – to source its “2 metal chip-on film” for future Galaxy S series flagship smartphones.

The 2 metal chip-on film is a component that’s used for bonding a display panel to the circuit board or a chipset in a smartphone. It’s flexible which means that it can be used for curved surfaces the likes of which you will find in Edge handsets. LG Innotek is reportedly going to start mass producing this film in the second half of this year. It’s unclear right now just how big of a deal this is going to be. The report quotes a Samsung official as saying that the company is talking with multiple suppliers to diversify and stabilize its supply chain. Samsung next Galaxy S flagship which will presumably be called the Galaxy S8 isn’t due to arrive until early next year. Perhaps it might be the first flagship from Samsung to feature LG’s  2 metal chip-on film.

Here’s how you can watch the Galaxy Note 7′s announcement live

Samsung is finally going to unveil the Galaxy Note 7 tomorrow even though we’ve pretty much seen all that there is to see about this handset. The event takes place in New York and obviously not everybody can make it to the Big Apple which is why Samsung is providing three ways to tune into the announcement event. Samsung is going to provide a 360-degree livestream of this event.

Users on mobile can either visit http://ift.tt/1AYeWks or Samsung Mobile on YouTube when the event starts and select the 360 Live Stream. iOS users can also tune into the event by watching the live stream on YouTube. Those who have a Gear VR can watch the Galaxy Note 7 unveiling in virtual reality. They have to download the Unpacked 360 View app from the Oculus Store and launch it using the Gear VR headset to watch the event in VR. Finally, users on PC can go to http://ift.tt/1AYeWks to watch the 360 Live Stream in their browsers. Don’t forget: The Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event is going to take place tomorrow at 11 am EST.

[Poll] Would you use Samsung’s new cloud storage service?

Samsung is said to introduce a new cloud storage service with the Galaxy Note 7 next week. It’s reportedly going to be called Samsung Cloud and it will enable users to back up their data to the cloud, data such as their photos, videos, audios and much more. Since it will be a cloud storage service users will be able to access that data on a variety of devices whenever they want. Reports suggest that all Galaxy Note 7 customers will receive free 5GB of Samsung Cloud storage and that paid storage options might be offered as well. So, the question is, would you use Samsung’s new cloud storage service or are you happy with your current storage service? All of the major services have apps for Android so it’s not like you won’t be able to use them on the Galaxy Note 7. Let us know your thoughts about this in the comments below.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

These are the three new tricks that the Galaxy Note 7′s S Pen has picked up

When the Galaxy Note 5 was launched last year we reported on the new tricks that its S Pen had picked up. The S Pen is integral to the Galaxy Note experience so Samsung tries to make it more useful every year with new features and it’s likely to be the same story with the Galaxy Note 7. A new report has been published today which sheds light on three potential new tricks that the Galaxy Note 7′s S Pen has picked up.

The first new trick is called Translate. As the name suggests, it will help users translate words that are in a foreign language. Screenshots show that users will simply need to hover the S Pen over a word to translate it, they can also tap on the speaker icon to hear the word pronounced. This will eliminate the need for users to launch a separate app to translate words and is certainly going to prove very useful. Magnify is the second trick and it’s self-explanatory as well. It will enable users to enlarge areas of the screen by hovering the S Pen over them. Last but not the least, there’s Glance which will help users quickly switch between apps by hovering the S Pen over the thumbnail. All of this is above and beyond the new S Pen’s rumored ability to write underwater.

What do you think about these features, do any of these feel like just novelties or do you think you could get a fair amount of use from them?

Galaxy A8 (2016) benchmark reveals its specifications

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A8 back in July last year so it’s about time that this handset was refreshed for the current year, Samsung has already done that with the other Galaxy A series handsets so the Galaxy A8 is next in line. It does appear that the company is working on the Galaxy A8 (2016) because the handset has now been spotted on GFXBench where its specifications have been revealed.

If the benchmark result is anything to go by, the SM-A810 or the Galaxy A8 (2016) features a 5.1-inch full HD Display, a 2.1GHz Exynos 7420 processor with 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage. I should point out here that the original Galaxy A8 has a 5.7-inch display, it’s unlikely that the display size will be reduced as Zauba import logs for the SM-A810 also mention a 5.7-inch display. The benchmark also mentions a 16-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera as well as Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. There are no details available as yet about any design changes made to this handset but since we didn’t see Samsung make any major changes to the rest of the updated Galaxy A series, it’s unlikely that we’ll see a major change in the Galaxy A8 (2016)’s design. The Galaxy A8 is one of Samsung’s most feature-packed mid-range smartphones and it’s successor is likely going to stick to the script. It’s unclear at this point in time when Samsung is planning to launch the Galaxy A8 (2016).

Samsung is hooking up 50 Reuters journalists with Gear 360 cameras to advance 360-degree journalism

In a new partnership, Samsung has hooked up 50 Reuters photojournalists stationed across 25 countries with its Gear 360 virtual reality camera in a global initiative aimed at advancing 360-degree journalism. This partnership will enable Reuters journalists to provide 360-degree content for Focus 360 which is Reuters’ new VR and 360-degree video and photography platform for global news. The Focus 360 portal will be launched on August 2 for Android and on August 5 for iOS.

Those who own a Samsung handset compatible with the Gear VR will be able to watch Focus 360 content on the virtual reality headset. Stephen Adler, Reuters Editor-in-Chief and President, said that “Our agreement with Samsung allows us to enhance our visual journalism and provide a more absorbing experience for our viewers,” adding that VR and 360-degree content will enable people to get a new perspective on the context of a news story. We have already reviewed the Samsung Gear 360 and have found it to be a very capable product that enables average users to create immersive virtual reality experiences. The camera’s abilities will certainly shine in the hands of a professional photojournalist.

Samsung’s Galaxy Folder 2 clamshell smartphone gets TENAA certification

We first found out about two months ago that Samsung has a new Android-powered clamshell smartphone in the pipeline. It’s the successor to Samsung’s Galaxy Folder handset – predictably called the Galaxy Folder 2 – and it looks like the handset is going to be unveiled soon. After making its customary FCC pit stop and being awarded the required Bluetooth certification, the handset has now received its TENAA certification in China.

Previous reports suggest that this handset has a 3.8-inch touchscreen display and that it’s powered by a 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor with 2GB RAM and 8GB of internal storage. It’s also believed to feature an 8-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera, microSD card support, a 2,000mAh battery and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. The TENAA certification has also revealed some images of this handset and we can see that Samsung will be offering it in gold. It has now passed a big regulatory step that’s required for a launch in China and the fact that it was also certified by the FCC leaves the door open for a potential launch in the United States. Expect the handset to cost around $250 if Samsung isn’t thinking of increasing the price.

First-generation Galaxy A5 finally gets Marshmallow

Samsung launched the Galaxy A5 nearly two years ago, the handset came with Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box and was later updated to Lollipop. It’s now receiving what’s most certainly going to be the last major Android update it gets. Samsung has started rolling out Android 6.0.1 for the first-generation Galaxy A5.

Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow is now rolling out for the Galaxy A5 (SM-A500FU) in several markets across Europe and has even been released in South Africa. It brings everything you would expect from a Marshmallow update as well as the latest Android security patches. Android devices are supported for major updates for two years and the Galaxy A5′s time is up, which means that it’s not going to be eligible for the Android Nougat update when it arrives in the coming weeks. Samsung did refresh the Galaxy A lineup so the Galaxy A5 (2016) is now available should you require a phone that’s eventually going to get Nougat at some point in the future.
