Samsung made impressive gains in wearables market in Q3 2020

Samsung has been releasing impressive smartwatches, fitness trackers, and truly wireless earphones since the past couple of years. No wonder, the company made impressive gains in the wearables market during Q3 2020. However, it still has a long way to go before it can offer a tough fight to Apple.

According to the latest data from market research firm IDC, Samsung shipped around 11.2 million wearables (fitness bands, smartwatches, and wireless earphones) during Q3 2020. The company ranked fourth, behind Apple, Xiaomi, and Huawei, and captured a 9% share of the market. That’s an impressive 32.2% growth compared to the numbers from Q3 2019 when it shipped 8.5 million units.

Apple shipped 41.4 million AirPods and Apple Watches and managed to capture a 33.1% share of the market. Xiaomi shipped 17 million wearables, placing itself at the second position with a market share of 13.6%. Huawei shopped 13.7 million wearable devices and experienced a whopping 87.2% growth year-over-year. Fitbit and BoAt were tied to the fifth place with 3.3 million units shipped. Overall, 125 million wearables were sold globally during the third quarter of 2020.

In terms of fitness band and smartwatch sales, Samsung was placed in the fifth position. The South Korean tech giant shipped 2.8 million Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Fit devices during the third quarter of this year.  The company launched the Galaxy Watch 3 and the Galaxy Buds Live, which were well-received. The company is now looking to launch the Galaxy Buds Pro, which feature an in-ear canal design and ANC.

Breaking: Biggest Galaxy S21 leak is here, come check it out!

The Galaxy S21 has been leaked already a few times, and as we get closer to the series’ debut, leaks are only going to get more hectic. Today, there’s a new leak that’s perhaps the most damning of them all. The leak consists of three short presentation videos for the Galaxy S21 5G, the Galaxy S21+, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

The videos showcase each smartphone’s main camera module, highlighting the new camera bump design picked by Samsung for its 2021 flagship lineup. Spec-wise, the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ cameras are expected to share the same characteristics including 12MP main and ultra-wide sensors as well as a 64MP telephoto unit. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S21 Ultra should have a 108MP main sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide shooter, a 10MP 10x telephoto lens along with a second 10MP 3x telephoto shooter, and a ToF sensor.

Galaxy S21 Phantom Violet color revealed

Samsung will introduce a main color that will represent the entire Galaxy S21 series as well as the upcoming Galaxy Buds Pro, just like it picked Mystic Bronze for the Galaxy Note 20 lineup. The company has now decided on the so-called Phantom Violet color for the Galaxy S21 series but a splash of Mystic Bronze remains around the camera lenses and the metal frame itself.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra, on the other hand, is depicted only in a darker color so only time will tell if it will also be available in Phantom Violet. The Galaxy S21 series is expected to be unveiled in mid-January, on the 14th of the month to be precise, though Samsung has yet to officially confirm the date.

Samsung acts cool but its jabs at Apple seem foolish and hypocritical

Samsung and Apple have been locked in a competition to take over the smartphone market for about a decade now, but this rivalry has fueled more than just hardware and software advancements. It also sparked numerous patent-related lawsuits filed by Apple as well as aggressive marketing campaigns led by Samsung.

The company’s seemingly-successful but shortsighted marketing campaigns are today’s main topic of conversation because they might reveal one of Samsung’s biggest problems, namely lack of long-term vision. Or perhaps even worse: lack of respect towards its customer base.

A few years have passed since Samsung’s marketing team decided to openly mock Apple’s decisions to remove the standard 3.5mm headphone jack from its iPhones, only for the same company to follow in Apple’s footsteps and remove the audio port from its own flagships beginning with the Galaxy Note 10 series.

The merits of the 3.5mm port are irrelevant in this conversation, but what’s relevant is Samsung’s attitude towards its biggest rival and its own customers. Change is an inevitability but the way you embrace it – or don’t – is what makes the difference. Samsung openly mocked change, or rather some of the industry-wide changes that Apple contributed towards (for better of worse), but in practice, many of Samsung’s actions told a completely opposite story.

For example, earlier in October Samsung mocked Apple’s decision to remove the charger from the iPhone 12 retail box and highlighted on social media that its flagships do come with a charger. However, in what would be a hypocritical move, Samsung could also stop offering a charger along with its upcoming Galaxy S21 flagship phones next year, at least in some markets.

This has yet to be confirmed but the rumors have a bit of weight to them. After all, Samsung also took a page from Apple’s book when it decided to remove the standard AKG-branded wired earbuds from the Galaxy Note 20’s retail box. Granted, this was done only in the USA and customers had the option of asking for the earbuds separately at no extra cost, but of course, they’d have to know that the earbuds were missing in the first place. Needless to say, Samsung failed to communicate this change clearly.

Is Samsung hypocritical or does it lack future vision?

Samsung’s marketing campaigns that were designed to take a jab at Apple may have worked in the short term. They have certainly grabbed the attention of many smartphone users, so you could say that they’ve reached their goal of increasing product awareness.

However, all of the company’s funny skits become dishonest marketing blurb as soon as Samsung decides on a whim to go against its own philosophy. And what’s worse is that these ads are now coming back to haunt Samsung to the point where the company even started removing them from YouTube and other social media platforms.

The big question now is whether Samsung was aware all along of the changes that the smartphone market will be going through over the next couple of years. Perhaps it’s a bit of both. Maybe Samsung lacked future vision when it mocked Apple for removing the 3.5mm headphone jack two years before it did the same. Or perhaps Samsung knew it will remove the 3.5mm port from its own flagships eventually but decided to take advantage of the situation for the purpose of marketing while disregarding the future. Long-term be damned when quarterly numbers fall below expectations, right?

One thing’s certain: If the Galaxy S21 series will lack a charger only a few months after Samsung mocked Apple’s decision to remove it, there will be no excuse and the only conclusion we will be able to draw is that Samsung is making a fool of itself while disrespecting its customer base. Samsung risks changing the public’s reaction from here’s another entertaining Samsung ad to here’s Samsung making a fool of itself again and wanting its customers to play along. Or perhaps Samsung’s marketing team is well aware of this hypocrisy and it’s betting precisely on the public’s short attention span.

As tech journalists who might already have plenty of Samsung chargers lying around, the lack of a charger inside the Galaxy S21 retail box wouldn’t be an issue for us from a practical point of view. But it doesn’t change the fact that Samsung would come across as dishonest thanks to its social media messages, and we suspect that it wouldn’t sit well with first-time Galaxy S21 flagship buyers either.

At the end of the day, Samsung has to either commit to its own vision and retain the rights to mock Apple whenever the Cupertino giant does things differently, or it has to admit that smartphones / smartphone brands are essentially moving in a similar direction and put an end to its dishonest and arguably insulting marketing pushes. Most Samsung customers don’t want to become a vector for propaganda and blind fandom. All they want is what they’ve always wanted: powerful, feature-full devices with great software and customer support. Hopefully the Galaxy S21 will deliver.

Here’s our first look at the Galaxy A52 5G with Glasstic back and Infinity-O

With the end of 2020 drawing near, more upcoming Galaxy smartphone models belonging to the mid-range segment are being leaked ahead of time. The Galaxy A32 5G was one of them, and now it’s time for the Galaxy A52 5G to get the same treatment, courtesy of @OnLeaks via Voice. The Galaxy A52 5G’s design has apparently been revealed through a series of 3D renders that showcase a quad camera setup and other characteristics.

The Galaxy A51 was one of Samsung’s most successful smartphones of 2020 so the Galaxy A52 5G is a pretty big deal for the company as well as for fans of the brand. In a way, the Galaxy A52 5G will likely define Samsung’s mid-range portfolio for next year, at least to a degree, and it should be one of the company’s main devices to strike a great balance between cost and features.

Metal frame, Glasstic back, and Infinity-O display

The Galaxy A52 5G has a metal frame and a Glasstic back, but the back panel no longer wraps around the left and right edges of the phone like it used to on the Galaxy A51. In fact, the Glasstic back has an edge similar to a 2.5D display.

The camera bump is large enough for an LED flash and four camera modules. The phone is said to measure 159.9 x 75.1mm and have an 8.4mm profile without the camera bump included. With it, the phone becomes roughly 10mm-thick.

Other details revealed by these Galaxy A52 5G renders include physical buttons on the right edge, a USB-C port flanked by a speaker grille and 3.5mm audio port at the bottom edge, and an Infinity-O display design. The panel will reportedly have a 6.5-inch diagonal and a fingerprint sensor underneath, same as this year’s model.

Samsung will bring Google Nest integration to SmartThings next month

Samsung appears to be giving SmartThings extra attention lately as the platform keeps getting better and more inclusive. Today the tech giant announced another major update to its smart home platform. It will become available early next year and, once it does, it will allow users to control their Google Nest home automation devices using SmartThings.

This partnership between Samsung and Google will bear fruit starting January 2021 when SmartThings users will get new tools for controlling Nest devices. In essence, Google Nest products such as cameras, thermostats, and doorbells will have the WWST (Works With SmartThings) certificate starting January.

Samsung aims to bring all smart home devices together

Samsung’s goal for SmartThings is to increase compatibility for consumers and also simplify smart technology development for manufacturers. The company is committed to creating a universal system where all smart home devices can work cohesively together, said Ralf Elias, Global VP of IoT at Samsung Electronics.

The recent Google Nest partnership reflects these goals, and so does Samsung’s newfound collaboration with Mercedes-Benz. The partnership was announced in October and it will lead to the 2021 S-Class Mercedes-Benz to support SmartThings out of the factory gates. In essence, SmartThings users will soon have the option of controlling their Google Nest home automation devices using SmartThings on a Galaxy smartphone or even the S-Class Mercedes-Benz.

December 2020 security update hits Galaxy Note 9, timely as ever

The December 2020 Android security patch is now reaching select Galaxy Note 9 models. This is yet another timely firmware release for Samsung’s 2018 flagship, with its deployment beginning yesterday in Germany. The new over-the-air update is identified by build number N960FXXS6FTK3.

Much like that software version implies, this release is targeting the international variants of the Galaxy Note 9. Those would be the ones using Samsung’s own Exynos 9810 instead of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845. No other changes are part of the newly available firmware update.

Will the Snapdragon Galaxy Note 9 models follow by the end of the week?

As per usual, the deployment is gradual in nature and may take some time to reach a truly global scale. If you want to speed things up, the first thing to try would be attempting a manual installation. For that, open the Settings app, scroll down to the bottom where the Software update menu resides, and select Download and install on the next interface. Assuming that doesn’t work, you can search our firmware archives to see whether we already have a compatible system image mirror that you can download and flash manually.

Only proceed with that last step after a full device backup, however. It goes without saying you should have some idea about what you’re doing, as well. As for the remainder of this rollout, it remains to be seen how quickly will Samsung ramp up things from here. It’s not unfeasible to see the U.S. Galaxy Note 9 models joining the December security party before the end of the week.

Samsung’s no-charger-in-box future may be here sooner than expected

Remember when Apple said that it wouldn’t include a charger in the box with its new iPhones and Samsung mocked the company’s decision? Well, it looks like the South Korean company might take a U-turn and follow Apple in that regard. It is being reported that the Galaxy S21 series might not come with a charger and earphones in the box, at least in some regions.

The Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra have recently been certified by Anatel, Brazil’s regulatory agency. The certification documents specifically say that the upcoming phones won’t be marketed with a charger or earphones. You can see the relevant text highlighted in Portuguese in the image below. Apple seems to have started one more trend that other companies, including Samsung, might follow soon.

We first heard about the possibility of Samsung removing the charger one month ago, but it was just a rumor back then. Now, it appears that the company has taken the final decision. Even with the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy S20 series, Samsung didn’t bundle earphones in the US. However, people who wanted them could request Samsung for free AKG earphones.

It remains to be seen if the South Korean firm will reduce the price of its smartphones or offer a way for Galaxy S21 buyers to get a charger and earphones for free if they want. Some countries might even force the company to bundle a charger with the phone, and we will get more information after the launch next month.
