Samsung is already working on Galaxy M01s entry-level smartphone

Samsung is expected to launch two new entry-level smartphones, the Galaxy M01 and the Galaxy M11, in India next week. While the Galaxy M01 hasn’t been made official yet, we now know that the company is already working on the Galaxy M01s, and the phone passed through Wi-Fi Alliance’s certification process yesterday.

The Galaxy M01s carries the model number SM-M017F/DS, which means that it will have a dual-SIM variant. The upcoming entry-level smartphone also appears to be running Android 9. It features single-band Wi-Fi b/g/n and Wi-Fi Direct. Going by the phone’s Geekbench listing, the Galaxy M01s appears to be using a MediaTek Helio P22 processor (MT6762V) and 3GB of RAM.

The smartphone’s Geekbench listing and Wi-Fi certification confirm that Samsung plans to launch the Galaxy M01s with Android 9 onboard. This seems odd as the Galaxy M01, which uses the Snapdragon 439 processor, will come with Android 10 out of the box. It is possible that the Galaxy M01s is a variant of the Galaxy M01, and both phones are meant to cater different markets.

We expect to find out more information about the Galaxy M01s closer to its launch in the near future. The Galaxy M01, which will launch next month, features a 6.4-inch HD IPS LCD screen, Snapdragon 439 processor, 3GB RAM, 32GB storage, a microSD card slot, 4G LTE, and a 4,000mAh battery.

Samsung’s Odyssey gaming monitors are T1 e-sports team’s official displays

Samsung had unveiled its updated Odyssey gaming monitor lineup earlier this year during CES 2020. The new Odyssey lineup consists of three gaming monitors—27-inch G7, 32-inch G7, and 49-inch G9—and they come with features like curved screens, HDR, and 240Hz refresh rate. Today, the South Korean electronics giant has announced that it has partnered with global e-sports organization T1 to be its official display partner.

T1 is a South Korean e-sports team that has won various gaming events and leagues, including multiple seasons of League of Legends World Championship. It also has teams for Apex Legends, Dota 2, FIFA Online 4, Fortnite, Hearthstone, Overwatch, Pokemon, PUBG, Super Smash Bros., and Valorant. All players and teams located at T1’s headquarters in Seoul, South Korea, will be using Samsung’s Odyssey gaming monitors.

Samsung says that its G7 and G9 Odyssey gaming monitors offer lightning-fast response time, comfortable curvature, fast refresh rate, and sleek design, offering professional gamers the competitive edge they need to make every split-second count. The partnership includes a series of events where fans of the T1 team can meet and interact with team members and check out the Odyssey gaming monitor lineup. The players would also wear clothes with the Odyssey logo.

The South Korean company will also release highlight videos and a “The Locker Room” series featuring the T1 team. The videos, which would be uploaded on T1’s official YouTube channel, will highlight the team’s achievements and Samsung’s industry-leading gaming monitor series. The G7 and G9 monitors would also be displayed in the Samsung Player Lounge in T1’s new headquarters that will soon be opened in Seoul.

Samsung has also announced that it will launch Odyssey G7 and G9 gaming monitors in the US this summer. The G7 features a 27-inch or 32-inch QHD (16:9) screen, while the G9 has a 49-inch 5K (32:9) screen. Both monitors use 1000R curved QLED VA panels, 1ms response time, 240Hz refresh rate, and LED lighting effects. All three monitors feature AMD FreeSync 2, Nvidia G-Sync, and HDR. The G7 is DisplayHDR 600 certified, while the G9 has the DisplayHDR 1000 certification.

The global gaming monitor market is bound to grow from $3.6 billion in 2020 to $4.5 billion in 2023. T1 CEO Joe Marsh said, “We look forward to seeing the esports industry grow even more as a result of this collaboration with Samsung, and we will actively support gamers around the world, as well as athletes, to experience the differentiated performance of Samsung gaming monitors.

Ha Hye-Seung, Managing Director of Samsung Electronics’ Video Display Division, said, “We will continue to expand strategic collaboration with the gaming industry for the development of the esports industry.

Galaxy Note 20+ 3C certification reveals support for 5G, 25W fast charging

Samsung is expected to unveil the next-generation Galaxy Note and Galaxy Fold series in August 2020. Multiple Galaxy Note 20 features have been leaked and rumored so far, including its battery size, cameras, and processor. Now, two more features have been confirmed, thanks to the Galaxy Note 20+’s CCC certification documents.

A variant of the Galaxy Note 20+ (SM-N9860) has passed through the CCC (China Compulsory Certificate) certification process, revealing support for 5G networks and 25W (9V/2.77A PD or 11V/2.25A PPS) fast wired charging. The phone’s charging was tested using Samsung’s EP-TA800 charger, which supports USB-PD and PPS.

The Galaxy Note 20+ is rumored to feature a 6.9-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with an LTPO panel, QHD+ resolution, and 120Hz refresh rate. The phone is expected to launch with Android 10 and One UI 2. Rumors claim that the Galaxy Note 20 series will use the Exynos 992 chipset (or the Snapdragon 865) with improved performance and power efficiency.

While the phone is rumored to come with a triple-camera setup, consisting of a 108MP primary sensor and a periscope-style optical zoom lens, it reportedly lacks 100x Space Zoom. It will come packed with a 4,500mAh battery, Samsung’s second-generation security chip, and a better ultrasonic fingerprint reader.

Galaxy Note 20 might give you a reason to buy the Galaxy Fold 2 instead

It has almost been a decade since the very first Galaxy Note was launched back in 2011. The tech media had some trouble wrapping their head around this device. It had a stylus at a time when the iPhone had been credited for wiping stylus-equipped phones off the market. It also had a 5.3-inch display which was considered too big. Of course, that’s not the case today.

One can surely credit the Galaxy Note lineup with pushing the industry to adopt larger displays. The success of this series is a testament to Samsung’s forward-thinking. It went completely against the tide and proved everyone that doubted the necessity of a large device with a stylus wrong.

Since then, smartphones have continued to grow larger. Most customers would just scoff at a phone with a display under 5-inches now. It doesn’t make sense to have such tiny displays anymore because everybody likes their multimedia content on large screens. However, there has to come a time when one needs to ask, how big is too big for the device to be considered a normal smartphone?

If recent reports are accurate, the Galaxy Note 20+ will have a 6.9-inch display. That’s almost the same size as some of Samsung’s early tablets. You may remember a few years ago when 7-inch tablets were all the rage. The aspect ratio difference notwithstanding, we are now at a point in time when a nearly 7-inch display on a smartphone doesn’t seem outlandish anymore.

Enter foldable smartphones. The whole idea behind foldable smartphones is that you can have a larger display in a device that can be condensed down into a smaller package. It becomes easier to live with and carry around as opposed to a conventional smartphone with a giant display. So if you were in the market for a phone with the largest display but also had the option for added convenience, wouldn’t you prefer a foldable phone?

This might be a question that some Galaxy Note 20 owners may find themselves grappling with when both devices become available. It’s also pertinent to mention here that the Galaxy Fold 2 will likely have a 7.7-inch display, so springing a bit more will provide you with the largest display yet on a device that can conceivably call itself a smartphone.

As one of the only companies offering multiple truly foldable smartphones, Samsung does provide customers with the option to switch should they feel the need to. As the line between the Galaxy Fold and the Galaxy Note lineups begins to blur, it seems like the decision to choose between the two will only get tougher, with the Galaxy Fold having an advantage because of the uniqueness of its form factor and the new user experiences that it can provide.

This may get tougher still in the future, particularly if Samsung were to bring S Pen support to the Galaxy Fold, something that a lot of its fans are waiting for. Sure, when you do buy a foldable phone you’ll need to give up a few things. There won’t be an IP rating so your phone won’t be water-resistant and it won’t be as durable as a conventional smartphone, but none of these things are deal-breakers.

That being said, do you feel that on some level, Samsung is trying to nudge its Galaxy Note customers to adopt the Galaxy Fold? The demographic that made the Galaxy Note the success it is today has the potential to elevate the Galaxy Fold to the same level of success. If this really is the case, do you think that it will ever happen? We’d love to hear your thoughts on this, please do share them in the comments below.

Samsung resumes semiconductor and memory plant investments

Semes, a key Samsung Electronics semiconductor equipment supplier has had a very successful first quarter, and this was in no small part thanks to Samsung’s apparent decision to resume investments into its semiconductor/memory chip manufacturing plants. Semes’ filings to the Financial Supervisory Service strongly suggest that Samsung is back on track to investing in the semiconductor business following the global memory market slowdown over the last few quarters.

Samsung acquired new equipment for its Xi’an and Pyeongtaek plants

Semes recorded a semiconductor equipment sales increase of 205% in Q1 2020 compared to a year ago, and this has helped the company return to black, according to The Elec. More importantly, Samsung appears to have played a big role in the supplier’s newfound success, as new equipment supplied to Samsung’s semiconductor plants in Xi’an, China, and Pyeongtaek, South Korea, have led to this positive outcome.

78.6% of Semes’ Q1 revenue (or 420.1 billion won) was covered by its sales of semiconductor equipment. Meanwhile, 371.5 billion won out of the 420.1 billion won total came from Samsung Electronics alone, while the rest came from clients in China. Semes also expects to boosts revenues even further as Samsung will be needing new equipment for its Quantum Dot Display line.

Its display business aside, Samsung is seemingly preparing to ramp up its semiconductor and memory chip investments after the global downturn. This should help the company maintain its leading position in the memory chip market. Likewise, Samsung’s equipment suppliers are bound to benefit from this, as they are highly dependant on Samsung’s success.

Galaxy Buds update with Buds+ features is now rolling out in Canada

Samsung began rolling out a new firmware update (R170XXU0ATD2) for the original Galaxy Buds a few weeks ago, and now, the same update is reaching Canada. As explained before, the latest firmware update drastically improves the Galaxy Buds experience, as it introduces a handful of features borrowed from the newer Galaxy Buds+ model.

The list of additions to the Galaxy Buds includes Microsoft Swift Pair, automatic, improved Ambient Sound, and Spotify integration. With Microsoft Swift Pair, Galaxy Buds owners can connect their earbuds to a Windows 10 PC with more ease. It also lets you easily switch between different devices connected to the buds.

Ambient Sound already exists on the Galaxy Buds but with the latest firmware update, it got better. Ambient Sound now works with only one earbud in, it can run automatically, and it offers additional sound options. Finally, the latest release brings Spotify integration to the Galaxy Buds. Originally a Buds+ feature, Spotify integration lets users control their music with gestures on the touchpad. A Tap & Hold gesture can launch Spotify, and repeating this gesture will summon a recommended playlist tailored to your tastes.

You can now download the latest Galaxy Buds firmware update in Canada through the Galaxy Wearable app on your connected smartphone.

Samsung heir probed over C&T and Cheil Industries merger, alleged fraud

Following Samsung Group Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong’s historic apology, the de facto leader was recently summoned by prosecutors as part of a probe into the Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries merger dating back to 2015, as well as allegations of accounting fraud at Samsung Biologistics. Samsung Group’s heir was summoned for questioning by the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office today, May 26, revealed the Korean media.

Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries – two Samsung Group subsidiaries – merged in 2015. Later in 2018, a number of current and former Samsung executives became a part of a lengthy investigation launched by the Financial Services Commission, alleging that the group had inflated Cheil Industries’ value ahead of the Samsung C&T merger. One example of this is the land value of South Korea’s largest theme park owned by Cheil Industries, called Everland, surging 370% percent in 2015 before the merger took place.

The merger helped Samsung’s heir rise to power

At that time, Lee was the largest shareholder of Cheil Industries and didn’t have a stake in Samsung C&T. The prosecutors suspect that the inflated value of Cheil before the merger was meant to favor Samsung’s heir, who is now being investigated for committing a breach of trust and violating the Financial Investment Services and Capital Markets Act.

The recent investigation was apparently triggered by other allegations of accounting irregularities at Samsung Biologistics. Samsung C&T is the largest shareholder of Biologistics with a stake of 43.44%, and Samsung Biologistics is suspected to have inflated its earnings to show high potential for Cheil Industries’ stake in the firm.

Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch seems to be getting ready for release

We have been following the development of Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch ever since we revealed four months ago that Samsung has a new smartwatch in the pipeline. The company hasn’t confirmed at this point in time when it’s going to release the device, but it appears that the new Galaxy Watch may not be that far off.

The new Galaxy Watch has picked up a key certification in China. This is usually a strong indication that the launch is not that far off. Given Samsung is due to launch new products in a couple of months, it would make sense for the smartwatch to be launched around that time.

New Galaxy Watch certified in China

We already know more than a few details about the upcoming smartwatch. It will have double the storage than that of its predecessors at 8GB across all models. We have also exclusively revealed that this will be the first smartwatch that Samsung offers in Titanium.

The upcoming Galaxy Watch bears model numbers SM-R840/845 and SM-R850/855. It will be available in two different sizes in addition to Wi-Fi and LTE variants. There are no signs as yet to suggest that these might be 5G-enabled.

As evident from the screenshot below, the SM-R840 and SM-R850 have both received their 3C or Compulsory Certification of China. This is required for products imported and sold in the country.

Such certifications are normally a good indication of an impending launch. With Samsung gearing up to launch the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Fold 2 in August, most likely by way of an online event, it’s quite possible that the new Galaxy Watch may also be unveiled alongside those products.

Galaxy S20 series ships 32.6% below S10 in Q1, Galaxy S20+ leads 5G

Samsung’s Galaxy S20 shipment figures throughout Q1 2020 were down 32.6% compared to the Galaxy S10 series last year, according to The Elec citing market research firm Omdia. By the end of the first quarter, the company shipped 8.2 million Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and Galaxy S20 Ultra units combined, with the Galaxy S20+ registering 3.5 million shipments.

The latter variant was the 9th most shipped smartphone model in Q1, and was surpassed by a couple of Samsung devices, namely the Galaxy A51 and the Galaxy A10s.

The Galaxy A51 was Samsung’s hero smartphone

In terms of shipments, the Galaxy A51 was the second-most successful smartphone in Q1 globally, having been surpassed only by the iPhone 11. Samsung managed to ship around 6.8 million Galaxy A51 units. Meanwhile, the company pushed 3.9 million Galaxy A10s units onto the global market.

It’s worth highlighting the fact that both the Galaxy A10s and Galaxy A51 had a full quarter in the market, whereas the Galaxy S20 series was technically released in March. Then again, demand for the Galaxy S20 lineup wasn’t nearly as high as it was for the Galaxy S10 series last year. In part, this is attributed to the global smartphone market slowing down considerably due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fortunately for Samsung and its latest flagship smartphone series, the Galaxy S20+ 5G had higher shipment figures in Q1 over any other 5G smartphone on the market. It was closely followed by the Huawei Mate 30 5G and Mate 30 Pro 5G on the second and third places, respectively.

Samsung India to finally launch aggressively priced Galaxy M11, M01

The Indian arm of Samsung is finally ready to launch the long-anticipated Galaxy M11 and Galaxy M01, a pair of aggressively priced entry-level smartphones. Both devices have been in development for some time now, with SamMobile exclusively reporting on the existence of the Galaxy M11 as early as last December. The handset eventually made its way to Samsung’s UAE storefront but missed out on a proper launch.

Earlier this month, however, the Galaxy M11 also made a quiet appearance in Vietnam. Its incoming release in India should be somewhat better-publicized as Samsung reportedly plans to have the smartphone available both online and offline. The Galaxy M11 will set you back around Rs. 15,000 ($200), whereas the Galaxy M01 is expected to be priced in the ballpark of Rs. 10,000 ($130). The Android smartphones should become available for purchase at some point next week.

No more online exclusivity

Formerly an online-only brand, the Galaxy M family embraced offline channels in India earlier this year. That move coincided with a massive fall-off in physical electronics sales caused by the ongoing measures aimed at curbing the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic. At the same time, a value-oriented series like the Galaxy M actually experienced a demand in surge in these trying times. That may be what prompted Samsung to double down on such entry-level releases and keep pushing to increase their offline presence; even as its overall retail strategy in India is now moving in the exact opposite direction.

Indian sources claim the Galaxy M11 and Galaxy M01 will be followed by the Galaxy A31, which is scheduled for release next week – Thursday, June 4th, to be specific. That particular model is rumored to be priced at some Rs. 23,000, or just over $300. At one-third of that price, the Galaxy M01 should still offer decent performance with its 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage space, and a 4,000mAh battery. Meanwhile, the Galaxy M11 is expected to become available in two iterations – 3/32GB and 4/64GB. Both memory configurations are said to be paired with a Qualcomm-made Snapdragon chip, whereas the Galaxy A31 will be fueled by a MediaTek silicon.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+ to have a massive battery

Samsung will equip the Galaxy Tab S7+ with a monstrous battery so as to account for the tablet’s significant upgrade in screen real estate. That’s according to a newly published China Compulsory Certificate which lists the device’s rated battery capacity at 9,800mAh. The emergence of the 3C attestation also suggests Samsung’s upcoming series is moving closer to release, especially seeing how the Galaxy Tab S7+ obtained its international Wi-Fi certification just yesterday.

As is often the case in consumer electronics, the typical battery capacity of the Galaxy Tab S7+ may be slightly larger than what it says on the label – if you want to get technical, that is. In this particular instance, the unit identified by model number EB-BT975ABY appears to be a 10,090mAh affair, GalaxyClub reports.

20% more screen, 40% more battery

Overall, the Galaxy Tab S7+ should have nearly 40% higher battery capacity than the Galaxy Tab S6, which utilized a 7,040mAh module. That should be more than enough to account for a 20% larger display area of the device. According to previously leaked information, the series will come in 11-inch and 12.4-inch sizes, though details on the former’s battery capacity remain to emerge.

By most accounts, it appears Samsung aims to bring the ultra-premium range in line with Apple’s latest iPad Pro models so as to do a better job at directly competing with each and every one of them individually. Perhaps the Tab S7+ will have a high refresh rate display as well? We’ll have to wait and see.

The Galaxy Tab S7 family, previously speculated to launch as the Galaxy Tab S20, should be officially announced this summer. Samsung may opt to unveil it alongside the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Fold 2, with the company being unlikely to hold more than a single Unpacked event in the third quarter of the year given the current global recommendations against large public gatherings. Of course, that’s assuming the South Korean tech giant holds a physical event in the first place.
