Tip: Don’t forget to enable Dolby Atmos on your Galaxy Note 9

If you think that title looks familiar, it’s because we had the same story up when the Galaxy S9 was released. Dolby Atmos is quite a useful feature to have on the stereo speakers and the AKG-tuned earphones on Samsung’s latest flagships, but it comes disabled by default. That might be deliberate since Dolby Atmos doesn’t always make a positive difference. But it can also mean that some users might not discover it as quickly as they should. So, well, if you have a Galaxy Note 9 or are looking forward to picking one up, don’t forget to enable Dolby Atmos as soon as you get the chance!

Dolby Atmos is great, but you have to first enable it

Dolby Atmos usually works on the Auto setting, which tries to detect the kind of media being played and adapts accordingly. But the detection is rather wonky at times, like using the Movie mode when you’re playing music tracks, so it’s best to play around with the different modes (movie, music, and voice) to see which one works best for your current use case. Or, well, just leave it on Auto so you can reap the benefits without having to worry about it too much. As you would expect, it’s more useful over the earphones, but the difference is noticeable even on the stereo loudspeakers.

In any case, you first have to enable Dolby Atmos. You can do that by using the toggle in the quick settings menu accessible by swiping down the notification shade twice. You can also enable Dolby Atmos from the Sound and vibration » Sound quality and effects menu in the phone’s Settings app. You can then access the toggle in the notification shade when you’re watching or listening to something on the phone to change the mode on-the-fly.

Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017) is getting updated with Android 8.1 Oreo!

Here it comes, folks, the first Oreo update for an existing device based on Android 8.1. The Galaxy J5 (2017) Oreo update is rolling out in Poland at the moment, with the August 2018 security patch in tow and Android 8.1 as the OS version. This comes a few weeks after Samsung updated the Galaxy J3 (2017) to Android 8.0 Oreo. Coincidentally, today is also the day Samsung unveiled its first Android Go smartphone, which runs Android 8.1 Oreo but is designed to be more efficient on the low-end hardware.

Galaxy J5 (2017) Android 8.1 Oreo update released

The software version for the J5 (2017)’s Oreo update is J530FXXU2BRH5 and the firmware is available from our database for those in Poland interested in immediately making the jump to Android 8.1 Oreo. It may also be available over the air, which you can confirm by tapping the Download updates manually option in the Software update menu of the phone’s Settings app. It remains to be seen when the Galaxy J7 (2017) will start receiving Oreo and also whether it will be updated to version 8.1 or 8.0. Current signs point to Android 8.1, and one can only hope Samsung doesn’t leave the largest of its mainstream 2017 J series phones on an older version of the OS as it did with the 2016 version.

Have you received the Oreo update on your Galaxy J5 (2017)? Do tell us if you have by leaving a comment. Also tell us your country of residence in case the update is available for you outside Poland as well.

Official Galaxy Note 9 commercial highlights its sheer power

The day that many Samsung fans had been waiting for has finally arrived. The Galaxy Note 9 has gone on sale today and pre-order customers have started receiving their units. Samsung can now get down to the business of selling as many units as its possible can and to that end, it has published the first official TV commercial for the Galaxy Note 9.

Key Galaxy Note 9 features highlighted

The first official Galaxy Note 9 commercial highlights all of the key features that make it such a powerful device. Samsung shines the spotlight on the all-day battery life, made possible by the 4,000mAh battery. It’s the biggest battery ever in a Galaxy Note flagship and that alone is a reason for some customers to just throw money at this device.

This is also the first Galaxy Note handset to be available with 512GB of storage. Granted, it’s a bit more expensive than the base model, but couple that with a microSD card slot that’s capable of supporting 512GB cards and you have a handset that can hold 1TB of data. That’s an insane amount of storage in your pocket.

Samsung has also made a significant improvement to the S Pen this year. The stylus supports Bluetooth which means that it can offer features never seen before on the S Pen. It can double as a remote for presentations or simply for taking selfies without having to hold the device in your hand.

These are the key Galaxy Note 9 features that Samsung has highlighted in its first TV commercial for the new flagship smartphone. It really does get the message across that this device is a great option for those who want a device that can keep up with them throughout the day.

If you have not yet picked up the new handset, do check out the available Galaxy Note 9 deals. Don’t forget to read our Galaxy Note 9 review as well to find out whether or not it’s worth spending $1,000 on this flagship.

Color war: Galaxy Note 9 Ocean Blue vs Metallic Copper

The Galaxy Note 9 is out in many countries today and many of you will probably be looking at buying the phone in the coming days. And, as always, there will be folks who are torn between the various color options on offer. Samsung has the usual Midnight Black model and a Lavender Purple version similar to the Galaxy S9+. The Ocean Blue and Metallic Copper are the new additions for the Galaxy Note 9, and while Samsung is using the Ocean Blue variant with its yellow S Pen for all of its advertising, the copper variant is equally beautiful, stunning, and classy.

Samsung confirms Galaxy A8 Star price and release date in India

It was reported last week that Samsung may soon launch the Galaxy A8 Star in India. A teaser went up on Amazon India a few days ago which suggested that it may not be long before this handset is available for purchase in the country. That has been confirmed today as the official product page for the Galaxy A8 Star has now gone live on Amazon India.

Galaxy A8 Star price and release date

This isn’t exactly a new device because Samsung is already selling it as the Galaxy A9 Star in China. The device has also been marketed as the Galaxy A8 Star in some other markets and that’s also the moniker that the company has chosen for its launch in India.

The Galaxy A8 Star features a 6.3-inch Full HD+ Infinity Display. It’s powered by a Snapdragon 660 processor with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The handset also features a 16-megapixel + 24-megapixel dual rear camera. Samsung is marketing it as an “IntelliCam” since the rear camera setup will be capable of adjusting itself intelligently to improve results in both day and night conditions.

The 24-megapixel front camera is aided by features such as Smart Beauty, Pro Lighting and AR Stickers. Additional features include a fingerprint sensor at the back, face recognition, NFC-only Samsung Pay and a 3,700mAh battery. The device ships with Android Oreo out of the box. Bixby Voice, Vision, Reminder and Home are also onboard.

The product page on Amazon India also confirms how much this device is going to cost. The Galaxy A8 Star price in India is Rs. 34,990 or ~$500. The handset will be available for purchase in black exclusively from Amazon India starting August 27.

Galaxy Note 9 goes on sale today in 56 markets around the world

Samsung’s latest flagship, the Galaxy Note 9, is now available for purchase in 56 markets around the world. Samsung unveiled the Note 9 in New York City on August 9, and compared to previous flagships, this one hasn’t taken long to hit retail, probably because Samsung wants to make up for the lacklustre sales of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. The phone is available in the the U.S., Canada, China, India, and all of Europe and Southeast Asia and will roll out to over 130 markets in the coming weeks.

Galaxy Note 9 goes on sale worldwide

The Galaxy Note 9 is Samsung’s costliest flagship yet, with $999 the starting price in most markets for the base model. But it’s also the company’s most impressive phone yet and is a no-brainer for anyone who can afford it. The Galaxy Note 9’s highlights include all-day battery life, an S Pen that comes with remote functionality thanks to built-in Bluetooth, the same stunning cameras as the Galaxy S9+, and a beautiful 6.4-inch Super AMOLED Infinity display. Of course, the fact that the base model comes with 128GB of internal storage is also great, and those buying the 512GB model can get up to 1 terabyte of total storage by buying a 512GB microSD card (though the price premium for that would be bonkers).

You can read our Galaxy Note 9 review if you’re undecided on whether or not you should buy the phone. Do tell us if you have one in your hands already, which color and storage variant you selected, and how you like the phone overall!

Galaxy J2 Core unveiled as Samsung’s first Android Go smartphone

It was first reported a few months ago that Samsung could be making an Android Go smartphone as well. The leaks started coming in slowly which suggested that it may not be long before this handset is launched. Samsung today put all speculation to rest by officially announcing the Galaxy J2 Core, its first Android Go smartphone.

Samsung’s first Android Go smartphone

Contrary to popular belief, Android Go doesn’t guarantee a stock Android experience. It doesn’t say anywhere on the official Android Go website that users will get a stock experience. This iteration of Android has only been optimized to offer better performance on entry-level devices with 1GB of RAM or less.

This meant that while the Galaxy J2 Core would be an Android Go device, it would unmistakeably remain a Samsung smartphone. We exclusively leaked pictures of the Galaxy J2 Core two months ago which confirmed this. The device runs Android Go with the Samsung Experience UX on top.

The Galaxy J2 Core features a 5.0-inch TFT 540×960 pixel resolution display, Exynos 7570 processor with 1GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage. It also has an 8-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera. All of this is powered by a 2,600mAh battery.

The device is pre-loaded with fewer apps that require less memory and storage. Google has made Go-edition apps of its popular services that are lightweight and require less memory. Additional memory and performance optimizations in Android Go promise faster performance.

Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy J2 Core will be available in Malaysia and India starting today. It will release the handset in other markets across the globe in the near future. The company’s regional divisions have yet to confirm the Galaxy J2 Core price.
