Samsung gets nod to restart smartphone production in India

Samsung had to temporarily suspend operations at its smartphone manufacturing plant in India after COVID-19 related lockdown measures were put into place two months ago. Now, with slight ease in the lockdown, the South Korean tech giant has received a nod to restart the phone manufacturing facility.

The government in India’s Uttar Pradesh state and relevant local authorities have now allowed Samsung to restart the production of smartphones at its Noida factory. The company plans to resume operations from this week, albeit with a limited capacity of 20-30 percent and necessary social distancing measures, according to an executive.

The government has also allowed other smartphone brands, including OPPO, Lava, and Vivo, to restart operations at their factories in Noida and Greater Noida. However, the companies are likely to face shortages of raw materials and components since their suppliers are yet to receive the government’s approval to resume operations.

Pankaj Mohindroo, chairman of India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA), said, “Permissions have been received by the majority of the companies, though the workforce has been truncated to 20-30%. It is extremely difficult to reach any kind of optimization and efficiency in this manner. This stipulation will have to be relaxed. An uncompetitive industry can be run over by imports.

Samsung’s smartphone plant in India’s Noida district is its largest smartphone factory in the world. It was inaugurated back in 2018, and it produces over 120 million units annually. Currently, there are close to 38,000 active COVID-19 cases in India and more than 1,800 people have lost their lives to the deadly virus.

Leaked Galaxy A21s marketing video reveals some camera features

Although the Galaxy A21 was just recently unveiled by Samsung, information regarding the phone’s successor has started leaking already. The Galaxy A21s has already received Bluetooth, FCC, and Wi-Fi certifications ahead of its launch. Now, a marketing video of the upcoming mid-range phone has been leaked.

The video of the phone (SM-A217F) shows two features of the stock camera application: AR Doodle and Live Video. The AR Doodle mode allows users to record fun videos with virtual drawings and handwriting on faces or anywhere else. When the camera detects a face, doodles on the face will follow the face, while doodles in the space will stay fixed in the same place.

The Live Video feature allows users to start live video streaming directly to Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Needless to say, the leaked video also confirms the final name of the phone, Galaxy A21s, something that was also revealed in the NBTC certification. The phone will be available in three colors: black, blue, red, and white.

The Galaxy A21s is rumored to feature a 6.5-inch LCD screen with HD+ resolution, an octa-core Exynos 850 processor, 3GB RAM, 32GB/64GB storage, and a microSD card slot. The upcoming mid-range phone could have a quad-camera setup on the rear (48MP primary, 8MP ultrawide, and 2MP macro) and a 13MP selfie camera. A 5,000mAh battery will power the phone.

Galaxy A51 was Samsung’s best-selling smartphone in Q1 2020

The Galaxy A51 was unveiled alongside the Galaxy A71 in December of last year. Since then, both mid-range smartphones have been selling well. According to a new report from market research firm Canalys, the Galaxy A51 was the best-selling Samsung smartphone in the world during Q1 2020.

The report estimates that Samsung sold around 6 million units of the Galaxy A51 in the first quarter of this year. The smartphone was also the third best-selling smartphone in the world, after the iPhone 11 (18 million) and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8/8T (8 million). The South Korean smartphone giant had four devices in the list of world’s top 10 best-selling smartphones during the quarter: Galaxy A51, Galaxy A10s, Galaxy A20s, and Galaxy A01.

Samsung is estimated to have sold 5 million units of the Galaxy A10s, 4 million units of the Galaxy A20s, and more than 3 million units of the Galaxy A01. Other smartphones in the list are the Redmi Note 8 Pro (5 million), iPhone 11 Pro Max (4 million), Redmi 8A (3 million), and iPhone 11 Pro (3 million). You can have a look at the complete chart in the image at the end of the article.

The Galaxy A51’s affordable price, stylish design, large screen, and quad-camera setup seems to be working in its favor. The phone has a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O display and an under-display fingerprint reader. It runs Android 10 with One UI 2.0 out of the box. It is equipped with the Exynos 9611 SoC, 4GB/6GB RAM, 64GB/128GB storage, and a microSD card slot.

It has a 48MP+12MP+5MP+5MP quad-camera setup on the rear and a 32MP selfie camera. A 4,000mAh battery powers the phone, and supports 15W fast charging. The Galaxy A51 recently started receiving the One UI 2.1 update in a few countries with new features. You can read our review of the Galaxy A51 here. There’s also a 5G variant of the Galaxy A51.

A first look at the Galaxy S21 SoC from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 875

The Galaxy S21 is expected to rely on the prowess of Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 875 SoC, at least in markets where it won’t be equipped with an Exynos chipset instead. Neither of these future silicons have been announced yet, but 91Mobiles has apparently gained some information about the Snapdragon 875 SoC from an unknown source.

Since Qualcomm is expected to unveil the SoC in December, this early leak may or may not be accurate, but the information broadly makes sense. So, let’s take a closer look at what the Snapdragon 875-powered Galaxy S21 might be capable of.

New Kryo 685 CPU Cores and Adreno 660 GPU

Although this early apparent leak doesn’t detail any exact numbers in terms of core count or frequencies, the source claims that the Snapdragon 875 will be equipped with new Kryo 685 cores – likely eight of them. As expected, the SoC will also be integrated with Qualcomm’s X60 5G modem. This component will actually be manufactured by Samsung itself, even though the Snapdragon 875 will be created in TSMC’s facilities.

The new Kryo 685 CPU cores will work in conjunction with a new GPU dubbed the Adreno 660. It makes sense, given that the ongoing Snapdragon 865 powering the Galaxy S20 series in some markets has an Adreno 650 graphics chip. The next-gen GPU will likely boast more than 1250 GFLOPS.

Other details mentioned by the source include an Adreno 665 VPU (vector processing unit), an Adreno 1095 DPU (data processing unit), a Spectra 580 ISP (image signal processor) whereas the Snapdragon 865 has a Spectra 480, and support for quad-channel PoP high-speed LPDDR5 RAM.

It’s unclear how Samsung’s own Exynos 1000 SoC will compare to Qualcomm’s solution, but the tech giant gave up on its custom cores and the next chipset is also said to be using AMD graphics, so it could be a strong contender. We’ll have to wait until the later part of 2020 or early 2021 to find out with certainty.

Samsung Pay debit card is launching this summer in partnership with SoFi

Samsung Pay is reportedly going to expand its services with the release of a Samsung debit card. The card will work in conjunction with a cash management account and Samsung is partnering with online personal finance company SoFi to bring this new service to customers.

Samsung wants to release the debit card this summer, according to CNet, and will reveal more details about the Samsung Pay debit card in the coming weeks. Sang Ahn, GM of Samsung Pay North America revealed that the company has been busy developing a mobile-first money management platform over the past year, and in 2020, Samsung Pay is evolving from being a rewarding way to shop and pay, to also being a rewarding way to manage your money.

The recent announcement marks nearly half a decade on the market for Samsung Pay. And over the past five years, the payment platform continued to grow to become available in 27 countries. It debuted in South Korea in August 2015 and became available in the USA a month later. Samsung continued to partner with numerous financial institutions over the years and Samsung Pay just recently added support for Swipe’s cryptocurrency Visa cards.

Since the recent announcement was reportedly issued by Samsung Pay North America, it remains to be seen if the upcoming Samsung Pay debit card will be released in every market where the platform is available, or if it will be initially bound to North America.

NBTC brings Exynos 850-powered Galaxy A21s one step closer to launch

The Galaxy A21s, which was exclusively confirmed by SamMobile over four months ago, is still nowhere to be found on the market, but it is drawing nearer to release with every passing week. The phone has already been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance, the FCC, and Bluetooth SIG over the past four weeks, and now the Galaxy A21s appears to have secured another certificate ahead of its eluding release.

The Galaxy A21s has been certified by Thailand regulatory body NBTC where the phone unsurprisingly carries model number SM-A217F. Aside from Dual-SIM and LTE capabilities, the agency doesn’t shed any more light on the phone’s hardware, but that’s not to say that the Galaxy A21s holds many secrets.

Expect a focus on a large battery, and maybe a new Exynos SoC

One of the more exciting things about the yet-to-be-announced Galaxy A21s is that it might be introduced along with a new Exynos SoC. At least according to an early benchmark, the Galaxy A21s features an unannounced Eynos 850 chipset, paired with 3GB of RAM. But aside from having 8 cores, this silicon’s characteristics are unknown. There’s a higher-than-usual aura of anticipation surrounding this budget phone, but the Exynos 850 has been rather elusive so far, so only time will tell if the early benchmark listing was correct.

While this detail is unmentioned by Thailand’s NBTC, the Galaxy A21s should also feature a 5,000mAh battery. Samsung has been equipping its mid-range devices with decently-sized batteries for a while, and the Galaxy A21s won’t go against this philosophy. Last year’s Galaxy A20s carries a 4,000mAh unit, so a 1,000mAh bump is rather expected.

A woman’s view: 10 reasons why the Galaxy Z Flip is awesome!

Regular SamMobile readers are well aware that my boyfriend Danny is a Galaxy Fold super fan. I’ve spent a lot of time using the Galaxy Fold as well and while I appreciate it for what it is, it became too much of a hassle for me to live with it. As much as I wanted to make it my daily driver, the size and heft of the thing put me off.

As luck would have it, Samsung came out with the Galaxy Z Flip, and Danny was adamant that I test it out. He believed that it would turn me over to the foldable clan, and I’m lucky that I got to try it as early as I did, because he was absolutely right.

I’ve always liked flip phones, I used to have them back when flip phones were a thing. For Samsung to bring back that form factor but with a completely modern twist instantly made the Galaxy Z Flip feel more familiar. It didn’t look like a proof of concept, it just looked like a modern flip phone, which just made me love it even more.

I was using the Galaxy Note 10+ before I switched over, it’s a great phone, but I don’t even miss it anymore. Here’s are 10 reasons why I feel that the Galaxy Z Flip is a truly awesome phone.

Why The Galaxy Z Flip Is An Awesome Phone

1. It Fits In Your Jeans!

The joy of finally having a phone that fits inside the jeans’ pocket is unmatched. It frees me up from having to carry a bag all the time if I really don’t need it for anything else other than a place to keep my phone. It might not seem like a big deal to most people but the ladies know what’s up!

2. It Opens Up Like A Charm

Samsung has nailed it with the hinge for this device. It opens and closes very smoothly, it’s a joy to go through the motions with the Galaxy Z Flip. It’s very satisfying and the novelty of it hasn’t worn off even after several months of using it as my main device.

3. It’s A Conversation Starter

Most people remember flip phones so they’re instantly intrigued when you unfold the Galaxy Z Flip in front of them. You always get positive vibes from them, as they go from shock over who could possibly be using a flip phone in this day and age to utter amazement at what this device actually is.

4. It’s Really Compact

One of the reasons why I couldn’t get myself to use the Galaxy Fold in the long run was the size of the thing. Women generally tend to have smaller hands so the compact dimensions of this phone make for a very comfortable fit. I don’t have to resort to finger gymnastics to reach a part of the screen.

5. The Cover Display Gets The Job Done

There’s no notification LED on the device so your only frame of reference for when there are unread notifications is the tiny cover display. Yes, it has its shortcomings as the guys here discussed in SamMobile’s Galaxy Z Flip review, but I find that it gets the job done. I can see at a glance which notifications are unread and if there’s anything that demands my immediate attention and requires me to unfold the device.

6. Flex Mode Makes The Galaxy Z Flip Really Versatile

I find myself using Flex Mode a lot, it’s the feature that lets you open up the device’s display at different angles. I use it for taking selfies a lot, it’s great that the phone can act like its own little tripod. Flex Mode also comes in handy when watching YouTube videos.

7. Fingerprint Sensor Is Top-Notch

Yes, I understand that in-display fingerprint sensors are all the rage these days, but I also find the tech to be lacking in comparison to capacitive sensors. The great thing about the Galaxy Z Flip is that it doesn’t mess around with in-display sensors. It has an honest to God physical sensor at the side, the speed of which is noticeably quicker than any in-display solution.

8. Ending A Call Has Never Been So Satisfying

We all remember slamming our flip phones shut when we were done with a call. It’s just the feeling of going through that motion that invokes nostalgia. Tell me, honestly, is there anything better? The Galaxy Z Flip will scratch that itch for you.

9. It Has A Unique Design

I became bored of using smartphones that looked more or less the same, even though I was changing them every year. It feels so refreshing that the Galaxy Z Flip has a completely unique design, even with a familiar form factor, it breaks the monotony and I’m all for it.

10. Finally, A Phone For The Ladies!

I can’t stress this enough. After having experienced almost every flagship device that Samsung has put out for the better part of the decade, nothing has given me the confidence that it was developed with the ladies in mind than the Galaxy Z Flip. Yes, it’s a great fit for men too, but it’s exceptionally well suited to women.

Is It All Rainbows And Sunshine?

No, it never is. There’s never a perfect device and I’m not saying that the Galaxy Z Flip is perfect. It does have a few shortcomings but we can live with them seeing as how this is a first-generation device. If anything, this should make you more excited about how Samsung will improve the Galaxy Z Flip in the years to come.

1. The Battery Isn’t Big Enough

I understand that this is a limitation of the Galaxy Z Flip’s compact design but you do feel that the battery could be better in some situations. It’s fine for the most part as long as the device is being used under normal conditions. It has been able to last the entire day for me. However, it’s a different story when you use it heavily and particularly when you’re on holiday. I often had to charge the thing twice in a day since we were on cellular roaming and taking a lot of photos and videos.

2. The Display Doesn’t Get Bright Enough

Obviously, the Galaxy Z Flip’s display doesn’t get as bright as the ones on a “normal” smartphone like the Galaxy Note 10+. The tech still has a ways to go before that can be possible. Hopefully, this is something that will be improved in future iterations of the device, I’d like to not have to squint my eyes so much when using the Galaxy Z Flip outside on very sunny days.

3. There’s No IP Rating

I get it, the foldable form factor hasn’t advanced enough for everything to be completely sealed off for the IP rating. The care-free attitude that I have become accustomed to after using water resistant Samsung flagships is a bit hard to shake off. I am so looking forward to the time when its possible for a device like this to be water resistant.

4. The Case Isn’t Strong And Is Just Meh

Samsung ships a case with the Galaxy Z Flip but it’s very flimsy. You really won’t feel that it protects the phone that much. Ideally, Samsung will ship a stronger case with future iterations. I also remember when Samsung used to have a partnership with Swarovski for accessories. If any device was begging for a partnership of that sort, it’s the Galaxy Z Flip. I would love to bling it up!

5. Price Is Still The Elephant In The Room

Yes, there’s no denying it, the Galaxy Z Flip is an expensive phone. At almost $1,400, it’s more money than what most customers will want to spend on a phone. I hope that Samsung finds a way to bring the price down, at least at the level at which it sells entry-level models of its flagships, so that more people can get to experience the beauty of the Galaxy Z Flip.

Do you agree or disagree? Share your thoughts about these reasons in the comments below, and let’s get a conversation going!

8GB Galaxy A51 joins the 6GB model in Malaysia, costs $23 extra

Samsung introduced the 6GB Galaxy A51 to the Malaysian smartphone market earlier this year, and now, a few months after release, the 8GB variant has finally made it onto Samsung’s online store in the country.

The new variant doesn’t differ in any other way aside from having an additional 2GB of RAM. It’s also available in the same color options including Prism Crush Blue, Prism Crush Black, and Prism Crush White.

The 8GB Galaxy A51 model costs RM100 extra

While the 6GB Galaxy A51 in Malaysia costs RM 1,299 ($300), prospective buyers wanting to acquire the 8GB model are looking at an RM 1,399 ($323) price tag. Storage remains unchanged at 128GB. Should that not be enough, the phone is equipped with a microSD slot that can read cards with capacities of up to 512GB.

Samsung’s mid-range hero has a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a pixel count of 2400 by 1080, an in-display fingerprint sensor, an Exynos 9611 chipset, a quad camera setup on the back panel including a 5MP macro sensor, and a 32MP wide-angle selfie shooter. This is the Galaxy S9 One UI 2.1 firmware being tested by Samsung

If there was still any doubt about Samsung having the One UI 2.1 update in development for the Galaxy S9, we can now confirm with certainty that the company is already testing the firmware for the Galaxy S9 in South Korea.

Test firmware versions for the Galaxy Note 9 surfaced a week ago, and it looks like the Galaxy S9 series isn’t trailing too far behind its S Pen-enabled sibling.

Galaxy S9 One UI 2.1 test firmware version

Samsung is currently testing firmware version G960NKSU3ETE1 for the Galaxy S9 in South Korea. Similar to the Galaxy Note 9 test firmware revealed a week ago, the build number mentioned above contains the letter E before TE1, and this clearly indicates that the update being tested is a big one. At the moment, the Galaxy S9 runs build number G960NKSU3DTC5 in South Korea, and only a major release like One UI 2.1 would prompt a change from the letter D to the next one in the alphabet.

Assuming everything goes according to plan, Samsung intends to release One UI 2.1 for the Galaxy S9 series in June, at least in South Korea. This tentative launch window was confirmed by a moderator on the Samsung Korea community forums just a couple of days ago.

One UI 2.1 should bring a handful of changes and additions to the Galaxy S9, but only time will tell exactly which One UI 2.1 features will be included in the release. We’ll keep you posted.

  • Model: SM-G960F
  • Dimensions: Bar: 147.7 x 68.7 x 8.5 mm
  • Display: 5.8 inch / 147.32 mm Super AMOLED Display

Samsung and AMD could end up powering the next Nintendo Switch

Samsung and AMD took the industry by surprise last year when they announced a strategic partnership in ultra low power, high performance graphics technologies. What this simply meant was that future Samsung Exynos processors would tout custom AMD Radeon graphics.

AMD’s RDNA graphics architecture was specifically mentioned in the press release, suggesting that this partnership would involve licensing of architectural IP which would enable Samsung to integrate it into its own designs. Chances are, this partnership could end up scoring a big win in the gaming industry when Nintendo decides to release a successor to the Switch.

Samsung could score a big win in the console market

The Nintendo Switch uses NVIDIA’s Maxwell-based Tegra X1 SoC, the same component is found inside the latter’s Shield TV series which hasn’t received any improvement in the chip department. NVIDIA hasn’t really been focusing on consumer-grade ARM products so there’s a real possibility that it may not have a new SoC for Nintendo’s next switch. NVIDIA does have ARM SoCs based on Pascal and Volta architectures but they’re not consumer-facing solutions, they’re meant for autonomous vehicle driving systems.

In the event that NVIDIA doesn’t have an off-the-shelf SoC, Nintendo would be forced to look elsewhere, and this is where Samsung and AMD would come in. AMD does have experience in manufacturing ARM processors itself so it could either invest in the IP itself or look for a partner that has significant experience in manufacturing ARM chipsets. Samsung would be the ideal partner as it has both the experience and scale to do that, it’s already one of the world’s leading producers of ARM processors.

While Samsung has previously used custom cores for its premium chipsets, the company has given up on that, which means that its next top SoC could feature off-the-shelf IP from ARM, eliminating any performance concerns caused by its custom cores. That, coupled with ARM’s robust RDNA graphics hardware, could present the perfect solution for Nintendo’s next hybrid console.

Sony has already selected AMD’s RDNA architecture for its next PlayStation and assuming that the graphics hardware transitions well to a hybrid solution, Samsung could end up scoring a big win in the console market by virtue of its partnership with AMD.

Whether or not that ends up happening remains to be seen, but it’s certainly within the realm of possibility. Nintendo hasn’t said when it intends to launch a new Switch console, so there’s also a possibility that NVIDIA could have a solution ready for it by the time it decides to do that.

Samsung India bringing 20,000 retailers online to increase sales

The COVID-19 forced lockdowns are pushing businesses online as restrictions on the movement of people have eliminated foot traffic in brick and mortar stores. India still has a massive network of retailers through which OEMs like Samsung sell their smartphones and the company is now looking to bring a significant number of them online to increase sales.

Following in the footsteps of Xiaomi and Vivo, Samsung has decided to implement a new strategy that will see over 20,000 of its retail partners being moved online. This will enable customers to purchase Galaxy smartphones from their neighborhood stores from the comfort of their own home.

Samsung leveraging the offline retail network to increase sales

Samsung says that this strategy will help “thousands of offline retailers become part of the online ecosystem and reach out to a larger base of consumers.” More than 20,000 sellers have already signed up, with Samsung partnering with domestic payments and installments platform Benow for payments.

Offline retailers can become a part of this initiative by registering on the Benow app but Samsung will have to share the details of the retailer with Benow first. They will receive a registration link on their mobile number after that. Once they’re registered, the retailer can create an online catalog of the Galaxy smartphones they sell which can be shared with customers over SMS, email, WhatsApp and social media.

Customers will be able to order directly from the catalog, the retailer will get notified when an order is placed using the link and they can then reach out to the customer for further processing. Payment links can be generated through Benow with customers being offered cash on delivery, credit and debit card as well as EMI options for payment.

Samsung India has also announced the phased opening of its brand stores in designated Orange and Green zones across the country.

Samsung brings more iconic artwork to The Frame TV for free

Samsung’s The Frame TV is a work of art. It looks like a painting when it is not being used, thanks to its thin white bezels, extremely slim form factor, and the artwork such as paintings that it displays on the screen. Now, the company has announced that is adding more artwork to The Frame’s library through two new campaigns.

The South Korean TV maker is running two campaigns—#StayAtHome with Arts and Stay Inspired – Home Exhibition—to place more magnificent artworks inside homes of consumers who have purchased The Frame TV. These campaigns will bring additional iconic masterpieces from the most celebrated painters in history and from world-class photographers.

The #StayAtHome with Arts campaign adds a total of 30 renowned works from the likes of Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, and Vincent van Gogh to Samsung’s virtual Art Store. The Frame users in the US would be able to enjoy these artworks from May 6 to June 5 even without a subscription. The artworks are easily accessible from the spotlight tab inside the Art Store.

Samsung’s Stay Inspired – Home Exhibition campaign for The Frame TV aims to bring inspiring work of world-renowned photographers to people’s homes. Users in Germany can now enjoy epic, inspiring, and architectural works of Samsung’s Snapshooters—a talented team of two dozen brilliant photographers who capture everyday beauty—on The Frame.

Later, standout photos from members of Germany’s esteemed Professional Association of Freelance Photographers and Film Creators would be showcased on the artistic TV from May 16 to June 17. Samsung feels that it can help people in staying inspired by the artwork, especially during the COVID-19 crisis even as they stay at home.

Samsung was second-biggest smartwatch brand in Q1 2020

Samsung is one of the most popular smartwatch brands in the world, and it competes with the likes of Apple in the booming wearables market. According to a new report, the South Korean firm was the second-biggest smartwatch vendor in the world during the first quarter of 2020.

According to market research and analysis firm Strategy Analytics, Samsung shipped 1.9 million smartwatches in Q1 2020. In comparison, the company had shipped 1.7 million smartwatches in Q1 2019. However, its market share declined slightly from 14.9 percent to 13.9 percent.

Apple continued to be dominant in the smartwatch segment, shipping 7.6 million units during Q1 2020. In Q1 2019, Apple had shipped 6.2 million smartwatches. The American tech giant’s market share rose from 54.5 percent to 55.5 percent. Garmin came in third with a market share of 8 percent and 1.1 million smartwatches shipped.

Steven Waltzer, Strategy Analytics’ senior analyst, said, “Samsung remains the world’s number two smartwatch vendor, but its growth was slowed by the coronavirus lockdown at home in South Korea and renewed competition from hungry competitors like Garmin.

Despite the COVID-19 situation, the smartwatch market grew 20 percent year-on-year to 14 million units in the first quarter of 2020. However, shipments are expected to decline in Q2 2020. The Galaxy Watch Active 2 has received really good reviews, and the company is already working on new smartwatches to be launched later this year.
