Watch BTS unbox and react to the Galaxy Z Fold 2

K-pop group BTS and Samsung have been working closely ever since they launched the Galaxy S20+ BTS Edition a few months ago. This collaboration with the world’s most popular K-pop boy band appears to have worked out very well for Samsung who was looking for the right vector to bring the flagship phones to the attention of millions of potential customers. Now, the world’s most influential K-pop group has been invited to unbox the world’s best foldable device, the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

We’re not very familiar with the Korean language but we don’t have to in order to see that the gentlemen of BTS were impressed by the Galaxy Z Fold 2’s hinge, the foldable display, the gorgeous cover display, as well as the luxurious Mystic Bronze color. It really is a stunning device with a very satisfying hinge motion, and we wish we could’ve seen more of it in this rather short BTS first impressions video.

Will there be a BTS Galaxy Z Fold 2 special edition?

Unfortunately, we don’t have an answer to this question. Samsung has so far only confirmed the standard Mystic Bronze and Mystic Black colors along with the Galaxy Z Fold 2 Thom Browne Edition. It hasn’t revealed anything about a potential collaboration with BTS for the creation of a purple Galaxy Z Fold 2, but we’ll keep our ears to the ground.

The video at hand is fairly short but the end suggests a more complete BTS first impressions/unboxing video may be coming soon, much like it was the case with the Galaxy S20+ unboxing video. So if you’re a fan, stay tuned. Until then, allow your imagination to envision a BTS-themed purple Galaxy Z Fold 2 and let us know in the comment section how you would feel if Samsung would sell you one.

What is the newest Samsung phone? – August 2020

It has often been difficult to keep track of the newest Samsung phone given that the company releases so many throughout the year. Samsung has dozens of models across different series which cater to all price ranges. This page will be updated on a monthly basis to ensure that you can always know what is the newest Samsung phone in each series.

The latest Galaxy Phone in every series

Galaxy Z Fold 2

The highly anticipated successor to the original Galaxy Fold has finally been unveiled. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 was made official alongside the new Galaxy Note lineup on August 5. Samsung will start taking pre-orders for the device from September 1.

It comes with a larger 6.3-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch foldable display at 120Hz refresh rate. Samsung hasn’t unveiled the full specifications as yet, it’s going to do that on September 1. It has talked up the device’s durability, though, and the fact that the foldable display is made out of Ultra Thin Glass.

Galaxy Z Flip

Samsung’s second foldable smartphone wasn’t launched as part of its Galaxy Fold series. The company decided to launch it as the Galaxy Z Flip instead. The Galaxy Z Flip was released in February and has quickly become one of the most highly sought after foldable smartphones on the market, and for good reason.

As we point out in our Galaxy Z Flip review, the device feels surprisingly normal despite the fact that it can fold in half into something you can easily wrap your hand around. It features 2019 flagship-level specs with a Snapdragon 855+ processor, 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. There’s also a 12-megapixel f/1.8 wide-angle camera and a 12-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide camera at the back. Selfie duties are handled by a 10-megapixel f/2.4 camera embedded in a punch hole in the 6.7-inch foldable display. It also has a combined battery capacity of 3,300mAh.

The Galaxy Z Flip is available far more widely than the Galaxy Fold was. It costs $1,380 and comes in three colors – Mirror Purple, Mirror Black and in select markets, Mirror Gold.

Galaxy Note

August is Galaxy Note month and right on cue, Samsung has unveiled two new handsets this month. The Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra are now official and available for pre-order. They’ll go on sale come August 21.

There are some major differences between the two models. The Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra feature a 6.7-inch flat FHD+ display and a 6.9-inch Quad HD+ curved display with dynamic 120Hz refresh rate. The former doesn’t have a microSD card slot while the latter does. Both don’t support 45W super fast charging, maxing out at 25W instead.

While the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra retains the signature metal and glass build that Samsung flagships have become familiar far, the Galaxy Note 20 only gets a plastic back. That’s a surprising decision Samsung has made this year, in addition to not offering 120Hz refresh rate on the smaller handset.

They also use the same Exynos 990/Snapdragon 865+ chipsets with the Note 20 only getting 8GB RAM while the Ultra gets a 12GB RAM configuration as well with up to 512GB of storage. Check out our hands-on to learn more about these phones and visit our devices page for the full Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra specs.

Samsung is now taking pre-orders for the new handsets. Prices start at $999 and $1,299 for the 5G Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra respectively.

Galaxy S

Much like it did last year, Samsung has launched three separate variants of the Galaxy S20 series in 2020. Therefore, the newest Samsung phones in the Galaxy S lineup are the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and the Galaxy S20 Ultra. The entire lineup is powered by the same Exynos 990/Snapdragon 865 chip with varying RAM and storage options on some variants. It also has a 120Hz refresh rate display. This is also the first time that the entire series is 5G-enabled, only select markets have got units that only support LTE.

The Galaxy S20 is the smallest of the bunch with a 6.2-inch display. Its camera setup consists of a 12-megapixel f/2.8 OIS primary sensor, a 12-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide and a 64-megapixel f/2.0 OIS telephoto camera. There’s a 4,000mAh battery with support for Wireless PowerShare. The handset ships with 12GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

The Galaxy S20+ has a larger 6.7-inch display but the same camera setup with the ToF sensor being the only addition. Both devices have a 10-megapixel front camera while the Galaxy S20+ is also available with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage. It also has a larger 4,500mAh battery. Both handsets feature Super Resolution Zoom up to 30X.

Samsung has truly thrown everything and the kitchen skin at the Galaxy S20 Ultra. It has a massive 6.9-inch display and a truly bonkers camera setup. There’s a 108-megapixel primary sensor, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide and a 48-megapixel telephoto sensor accompanied by a ToF sensor. A 40-megapixel selfie camera is also present. The 5,000mAh battery is the biggest we have seen yet in a Galaxy S flagship. The handset also touts up to 100X Space Zoom. It’s available in 12GB/128GB and 16GB/512GB configurations.

Prices start at $999 for the Galaxy S20, $1,199 for the Galaxy S20+, and $1,399 for the Galaxy S20 Ultra. Read our Galaxy S20/S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra hands-on reviews to learn more about these devices.

Galaxy S Lite

The Galaxy S10 Lite was added to the family in January 2020. Starting at 649 euro ($720), it comes with a 6.7-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 855 processor with 6/8GB RAM and 128GB of storage. In addition to its 4,500mAh battery, the handset features the same triple camera setup as the Galaxy A51, which consists of a 48MP primary, 12MP ultrawide and 5MP macro camera. A 32MP front camera is also present.

Galaxy A

Samsung has significantly expanded its Galaxy A series in 2019. It now offers over a dozen smartphones across all price ranges. You can get a entry level device like the Galaxy A10 and a 5G-capable device like the Galaxy A90 5G.

The Galaxy A31 is currently the latest Galaxy phone in this lineup. It was unveiled in March 2020. The Galaxy A31 has a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED Full HD+ Infinity-U display, MediaTek Helio P65 processor with 4/6GB RAM and 64/128GB storage. The rear camera setup includes a 48MP primary, 8MP ultra-wide, 5MP macro and a 5MP depth sensor. A 20MP selfie camera is also present upfront.

The Galaxy A31 is currently available in markets like South Korea, Vietnam, Australia, Brazil and India for the equivalent of $280.

Galaxy M

Galaxy M31s

Samsung introduced its Galaxy M lineup earlier this year. It’s a new budget lineup aimed primarily at India with features that were previously never seen on devices in this price range from Samsung. The series is also unique in that Samsung only sells the Galaxy M devices online.

Launched earlier this month, the Galaxy M31s is the latest handset in this budget series. It’s equipped with a 6.5-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display with an Exynos 9611 processor, up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Android 10 and One UI 2.1 come installed out of the box.

The rear quad camera includes a 64-megapixel primary, 12-megapixel ultra-wide and 5-megapixel depth camera in addition to a 5-megapixel macro sensor. There’s a 32-megapixel camera upfront.

A 6,000mAh battery keeps the lights on and the Galaxy M31s has the distinction of being the first budget smartphone from Samsung to support 25W fast charging. It’s available for purchase now in India starting at INR 19,499 ($260).

Bear in mind that this list only tells you about the newest Samsung phone in every series, not what’s the best in a given price range. It’s to show you what the latest phone is so that you know what to look out for when buying a new Samsung smartphone.

First Galaxy Z Fold 2 hands-on video confirms expectations: it’s stunning!

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 might represent the biggest evolutionary step for any second-generation mobile device ever. It’s been upgraded over the original Galaxy Fold on almost every front, but the biggest focus in Samsung’s eyes was to bring significant improvements to the exterior design, the hinge, and both of its displays. The company has achieved that in spades.

The phone-tablet hybrid looks gorgeous from any angle in all the leaked and official presentations so far, and today we finally get to see the Galaxy Z Fold 2 ‘in flesh’ thanks to a leaked short hands-on video shared on Twitter by @BenGeskin. It turns out that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 doesn’t only look gorgeous in press renders but also in the real world.

The video has no sound but the folding motion inspires great confidence in the new hinge. The phone looks very sturdy and the hinge motion is seemingly very satisfying. There’s still a crease running across the middle of the foldable panel, but the bezels are thinner and the lack of a notch elevate the Foldable Dynamic AMOLED display to a new level. It does look familiar to existing Galaxy Fold owners, unlike the cover display which is truly stunning, especially when compared to the original model’s.

The 6.2-inch Super AMOLED cover display plays a pivotal role in making the Galaxy Z Fold 2 a true hybrid device that can be both a smartphone and a tablet. The original cover display was too small to reach this goal, but as you can tell from this video alone, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 drastically changes that smartphone-tablet dynamic in the best way possible. Take a look for yourself and feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.

Samsung India drops Galaxy A51 price but it still might not be enough

Samsung India has prepared a limited-time offer for prospective Galaxy A51 buyers, wherein the mid-range smartphone, i.e., the company’s best-selling smartphone of Q1 2020, is now available at a discount. The company recently tweeted the news that the Galaxy A51 with 6GB of RAM is now available for INR 22,499 ($299). The same device was being sold for INR 25,250 just a week ago.

Perhaps Samsung had realized that the Galaxy A51 became a horrible deal for Indian customers after it announced the Galaxy M31s for the starting price of INR 19,499. This new mid-range phone from Samsung was released in India yesterday, and Samsung is cutting the price of the Galaxy A51 less than 24 hours later.

The temporary INR 22,499 price tag is not yet listed on the company’s online shop. The 6GB model carries a price of INR 23,999 but this should change soon, seeing how the limited-time offer lasts until August 15. The 8GB model also appears to have been discounted as it’s now listed for INR 25,999, down from last week’s INR 26,999 price.

Even so, Samsung’s efforts to keep the Galaxy A51 relevant in a post-Galaxy M31s world could be in vain. The Galaxy M31s still looks like a better value proposition even considering the ongoing Galaxy A51’s limited-time deal. It’s cheaper, it shares many of its specs with the Galaxy A51 while being better in some areas including the cameras and battery. But if you still want to make the Galaxy A51 yours, you can check the links below for more details.

Galaxy Tab S7+ runs at 120Hz refresh rate at maximum screen resolution

Samsung first made the move to high refresh rate tech with the Galaxy S20 series earlier this year, and the newly announced Note 20 Ultra, Galaxy Tab S7 and Galaxy Tab S7+ also have a 120Hz display. While the high refresh rate makes for a wonderful user experience, owners of the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra have not been pleased with the fact that they cannot use the maximum screen resolution on their phone when 120Hz mode is enabled.

The same limitation is in place on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra as well, and as we learned a few months back, it’s because the processor does not provide the required bandwidth to drive the higher refresh rate at QHD resolution. However, we can confirm that the Galaxy Tab S7+ actually makes full use of the screen resolution and 120Hz refresh rate.

Samsung isn’t clear on the methods used to achieved this. Perhaps the aforementioned bandwidth issue was addressed by the newer Snapdragon 865+ chipset, or perhaps the Snapdragon 865 was capable of achieving the same results but the Exynos 990 could not and Samsung leveled the playing field. And since the Galaxy Tab S7+ only comes with a Qualcomm chipset solution regardless of market, the Exynos 990 was no longer a burden that needed accounting for.

This is only speculation, of course, and maybe it’s not an issue of bandwidth after all. Instead, it could be that the large 10,090mAh battery made it possible for the Galaxy Tab S7+ to run at 120Hz and 2800 x 1752 resolution and achieve what the Galaxy S20 series or the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra could not. Whatever the case may be, it’s great news for prospective Galaxy Tab S7+ buyers. As yet, we don’t know if the base Galaxy Tab S7 model can also run 120Hz at max resolution, but we’ll let you know as soon as we find out.

Don’t forget to check out our Galaxy Tab S7+ review in the meantime to find out if the latest flagship tablet from Samsung is worth your hard-earned cash.

First Galaxy Watch 3 update adds blood oxygen monitoring and more

The first software update for the Galaxy Watch 3 is now out, with Samsung beginning its rollout only a day after releasing its latest and greatest lineup of wearables. This over-the-air release was actually even mentioned at this week’s Galaxy Unpacked 2020 where Samsung officially announced the Galaxy Watch 3.

More specifically, it includes support for blood oxygen monitoring, VO2max, sleep ratings, and advanced running analytics, all of which were touted as some of the key Galaxy Watch 3 features at this week’s launch event. The OTA update is 80MB in size and can be installed from the Galaxy Wearable app, assuming it’s already available for download in your territory.

Selective feature availability

As Samsung already noted on Wednesday, blood oxygen analytics are meant to provide informative insights into one’s health and aren’t accurate enough to be classified as medical data. What legally constitutes “medical data” varies by country, which is presumably why this functionality isn’t available in every single market in which the Galaxy Watch 3 series was released. In an alphabetical order: Algeria, Angola, Canada, France, Iran, Japan, Libya, South Africa, and Thailand won’t be getting access to this feature.

The first Galaxy Watch 3 update will presumably take at least several days to be fully deployed. This won’t be the last major wave of feature additions to the new wearable lineup, either. For example, Samsung is still ironing out ECG support for the Galaxy Watch 3. This software strategy appears to mimick that seen last year with the Galaxy Watch Active 2, which also lacked day-one ECG monitoring.

Samsung is working on a 5G variant of the Galaxy Book Flex

Samsung had unveiled two laptops—Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion—last year with sleek designs and QLED screens. Three months ago, they became available for purchase in Germany, the US, and other markets. Now, it appears that the company might launch a new variant of the Galaxy Book Flex with improved connectivity.

The South Korean tech giant has filed an application for the term ‘Samsung Book Flex 5G’ with EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) which leads us to believe that a 5G variant of the Galaxy Book Flex could be launched in the future. We don’t know exactly when this version of the laptop will be launched. However, it could happen later this year, going by the timing of the trademark application.

As 5G networks are getting launched in various markets around the world, Samsung is releasing 5G versions of its smartphones and tablets. The Galaxy Book Flex could be the South Korean firm’s first 5G-equipped laptop. Dell, HP, and Lenovo have already unveiled their first 5G-equipped laptops, so Samsung seems a little late in comparison. It is being reported that Intel-powered 5G laptops could use MediaTek’s 5G modems.

The Galaxy Book Flex is a 2-in-1 convertible laptop that comes in 13.3-inch and 15.6-inch QLED touchscreen variants. It features slim bezels on three sides of the screen, an S Pen, a backlit keyboard, a trackpad with Qi wireless charging, more than 19 hours of battery life, and fast charging. It is equipped with 10th Gen. Intel Core i5/i7 processor, 8GB/12GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Windows Hello fingerprint reader, Wi-Fi 6, AKG-tuned speakers, Thunderbolt 3 port, and UFS+microSD card slot.
