Samsung explains the uses of Galaxy Note 20’s UWB feature in new video

The Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra are Samsung’s latest Galaxy Note series smartphones, and they both come with impressive features. However, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a few additional features compared to the Galaxy Note 20. It features a larger screen, better camera setup, lower latency S Pen, bigger battery, and the UWB (Ultra-Wideband) technology.

The first Android smartphone to feature UWB is the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. The company had given us a short glance over UWB’s uses during the Galaxy Unpacked 2020 event, but in its new video, Samsung has explained the technology in detail and how it plans to use UWB in the future. Thanks to its close relationship with Google, the South Korean smartphone giant was able to become the first brand to use UWB in Nearby Share.

Galaxy Note 20 Ultra’s UWB can be used for sharing files, unlocking smart doors, mobile payments

The Point to Share aspect of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra’s Nearby Share feature first lists a compatible device that you’re directly pointing to with a blue circle. This makes the whole process of using Nearby Share even easier. You won’t need to scroll through a list of devices to find out the name of the device with which you wish to share files. Using Galaxy Note 20 Ultra’s Nearby Share feature, you can share documents, files, images, links, tweets, videos, and much more.

Samsung is also planning to bring the SmartThings Find feature for its devices in the future. This feature uses the Ultra-Wideband technology to identify the location of compatible devices near you. For example, you might be able to find your wireless earbuds or smartwatch using AR (Augmented Reality) effects. The company is also working on its ‘Digital Key’ service that uses a smartphone’s UWB to lock or unlock smart door locks.

In the future, Samsung smartphones with UWB can also connect to cars, specific places in your home or office, IoT devices, and smart home products. The company is even planning to use UWB for mobile payments, probably via Samsung Pay. Watch the video below to know more about Samsung’s plans with UWB connectivity in its future devices.

Galaxy M51 could launch first in Russia, support pages go live

It appears that the Galaxy M51 might launch soon. After we exclusively reported some of its specs three months ago, it received certifications from the Bluetooth SIG, FCC, and Wi-Fi Alliance. Now, Samsung Russia’s website has listed product support pages for the Galaxy M51, confirming the phone’s existence and hinting towards the launch of the mid-range smartphone.

The support pages for the Galaxy M51 are now live on Samsung’s websites for Kazakhstan and Russia. The webpages mention the model number SM-M515F/DSN, which leads us to believe that the dual-SIM smartphone will definitely be launched in these two markets. It was earlier reported that the Galaxy M51 was supposed to launch in India in July, but the launch was pushed to September due to the COVID-19 situation.

Galaxy M51 leaked specs

The Galaxy M51 is expected to be a modified version of the Galaxy A51. The upcoming smartphone is expected to feature the Snapdragon 730 processor, 6GB/8GB RAM, and 128GB internal storage. The device appeared running Android 10 in some benchmarks. The phone could do away with Samsung OLED screens to use CSOT’s OLED screens. It could be powered by a 7,000mAh battery and feature 25W fast charging.

We had exclusively reported last month that the Galaxy M51 will come equipped with a quad-camera setup, consisting of a 64MP wide-angle camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, a depth-sensing camera, and a macro camera. We had also confirmed that the smartphone will feature the Single Take camera mode that captures a series of photos and videos from different perspectives and filters.

Other Galaxy M51 specs might include an in-display fingerprint reader, GPS, LTE, Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, USB Type-C port, and a headphone jack.

Samsung to reportedly start constructing its third chip plant next month

Samsung is trying to cope up with the rising demand for power-efficient chips. It recently started the mass production of 5nm chips, but it has been having problems with the yield, and it may have already lost orders from Qualcomm due to the reason. Now, it is being reported that the company will start the construction of its third chip manufacturing facility in South Korea next month.

Land preparation for the chip fabrication facility has been taking place since June in Pyeongtaek, South Korea. According to Samsung and the local government bodies, the commencement of the building construction will reportedly start in September. The company reportedly wanted to build the Pyeongtaek Line 3 (P3) earlier than planned and it had asked the government authorities to grant them the permit swiftly.

The South Korean chip giant is expected to spend KRW 30 trillion (around $25.2 billion) on the P3 plant, which is going to be Samsung’s biggest chip fabrication facility in Pyeongtaek. The company reportedly plans to build a total of six chip fabrication facilities in the Pyeongtaek complex. The P1 facility is currently operational, while the P2 facility is expected to fully start next year. Mass production of chips could start at the company’s P3 factory in 2023.

Samsung hasn’t revealed what kind of chips will be manufactured at the P3 facility or its production schedule. The company is aggressively pushing to become the world’s largest chip company by 2030 and is planning to invest $115 billion to achieve its goal. It also plans to start building three more chip plants—P4, P5, and P6—one after another and has asked the government to secure more industrial water for the construction.

Samsung Korea starts Galaxy Note 20 Studio hands-on experience program

The Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra were unveiled on August 5, and they are now available for pre-order in various parts of the world. During the pandemic, Samsung is making sure that customers in South Korea can safely get the hands-on experience of the Galaxy Note 20.

The South Korean smartphone giant has set up various Galaxy Note 20 Studio experience zones across the country. This experimental marketing strategy is optimized for the post-COVID-19 world, where social distancing is necessary and non-contact experiences are preferred. The omni-experience service blurs the lines between offline and online marketing platforms.

Customers can discuss in-depth about the Galaxy Note 20 devices and their features with experts through one-on-one video calls by adding the My Galaxy Studio channel in Kakao Talk. The My Galaxy Studio app can be used to watch videos about the devices on any smartphone.

South Korean customers can also use the Galaxy Note 20 devices as their own phones for up to three days before buying them, thanks to the Galaxy To Go service. Samsung has currently set up the Galaxy Note 20 Studio experience zones in five areas: Crown Plaza in Lotte World Mall, Famie Station in Gangnam, IFC Mall in Yeouido, Parnas Mall in COEX, and Times Square in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul.

Samsung has also made sure that customers can stay safe from the COVID-19 virus by separating entry and exit points, minimizing face-to-face contact between visitors, and by providing temperature checks, face masks, and gloves. The experience zone and the quarantine zone are interoperated every 20 to 30 minutes. Products are frequently sterilized so that users can experience them with peace of mind.

Stunning doesn’t even begin to describe the Mystic Bronze Galaxy Note 20 Ultra

At a time when the front of a smartphone is covered almost entirely by the display and black bezels around it, it’s only around the sides and the back where the color of a phone comes into play. Last year, the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ dazzled us with the Aura Glow finish, and a year later, Samsung has another winner on its hands with the Mystic Bronze Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

Mystic Bronze is absolutely stunning and the classiest color I’ve ever seen on a Galaxy smartphone, and the photos you see here don’t do it justice. The best thing Samsung has done is opt for a matte finish this time around. That makes all the difference in the world in my opinion: The back is no longer reflective and shiny, which is what gives it an understated look. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t mind the reflective and gradient paint jobs that Samsung has been experimenting with in the last couple of years, but Matte Mystic Bronze looks a lot more premium.

What further enhances the beauty is the contrast added by the darkened camera glass (the scary camera bump notwithstanding). Also, those concentric circles around the camera sensors put me off when I first saw leaked renders of the Note 20/Note 20 Ultra, but they might just be one of the boldest design decisions Samsung has taken in recent years, and I think it has paid off now that I have seen the phone in person.

Now, I understand that not everyone will find the Mystic Bronze shade alluring. Perhaps I’m also a little more awed by it than I would have been if the Galaxy S20 Ultra hadn’t been my primary phone these last few months. I found the choice of colors for the Galaxy S20 series quite boring, and the Cosmic Grey option (which is the one I was using) is the dullest of them all, so the Galaxy Note 20 lineup comes as a breath of fresh air.

Watch out for our review of Samsung’s new flagship phones in the coming days to find out whether it’s only the design that’s amazing or if the things that really matter — performance, camera quality, battery life, S Pen experience, etc. — are worthy of praise as well. In the meantime, check out our Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra hands-on for our first impressions of the two phones.
