Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017) passes through FCC, might be announced soon

It appears that Samsung might soon announce the Galaxy J5 (2017) for the US market. The smartphone, which received Wi-Fi certification three months ago, was spotted on GFXBench and its pictures were leaked a couple of weeks ago. Three variants of this smartphone – SM-J530GM, SM-530YM/DS, and SM-J530GM/DS – have cleared FCC certification. The device will likely run Android 7.0 out of the box.

The Galaxy J5 (2017) is expected to feature a 5.2-inch HD Super AMOLED display, an Exynos 7870 processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, a 13-megapixel primary camera, and a 5-megapixel secondary camera. The Galaxy J5 (2016) was announced in April last year, so it seems plausible that we might soon see the Galaxy J5 (2017) announcement from Samsung.

Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 edge, and S6 active start receiving Android 7.0 update on AT&T’s network

After releasing the Android 7.0 update for the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+, AT&T has now announced that it has started seeding the Nougat update for three more Samsung phones on its network. The Galaxy S6 (SM-G920A), S6 edge (SM-G925A), and the S6 active (SM-G890A) have started receiving Android 7.0 on AT&T’s network in the US.

The update has a file size of around 1.3GB each, so make sure that you have enough space left on your smartphone if you want to download and install Android 7.0 (Nougat) on your Galaxy S6, S6 edge, or S6 active. The update also brings a newer UI, Samsung Cloud, Samsung Pass, and April 2017 Android device security patch to these smartphones.

As per the official changelog from the carrier, AT&T has also removed AT&T Address Book and MobiTV apps from the software on these devices, so there should be relatively less bloatware now. If you’re on AT&T’s network, have you started receiving this update on your Galaxy S6, S6 edge, or S6 active? Let us know in the comments section below.

Buy Galaxy S8 by May 16 and get a free Samsung Entertainment Kit

Samsung is running a great promotion for Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ customers in the United States who purchase the new flagship by May 16. They’ll receive a free Samsung Entertainment Kit. The kit includes a 64GB Samsung EVO+ microSD card, a Clear View Standing Cover for their device as well as a six-month subscription to Netflix.

SamMobile Daily Recap: May 3, 2017 — Galaxy A3 (2017), QLED TVs and more!

Switching to the Galaxy S8: My first impressions

I firmly believe that the Galaxy S6 edge+ is one of Samsung’s best smartphones to date. It’s the last handset I remember being genuinely excited about. For some reason, the Galaxy S7 didn’t cut it for me, so I decided to make the jump from Android to iOS and pick up an iPhone 6s, followed by an iPhone 7 Plus.

It’s safe to say that my excitement for Samsung’s next big thing returned when I placed my pre-order for the Galaxy S8+ on Friday, April 6. As each day passed, I checked the online order tracking page multiple times hoping there’d been some sort of slip up and it had been despatched early. Unfortunately, it hadn’t.

After what felt like an eternity, I finally got my hands on the Galaxy S8+ last Monday, and coming from an iPhone 7 Plus, it’s a big change. Transferring my data was a breeze, though I was disappointed to learn that some of my content wasn’t compatible, like WhatsApp backups. But that’s not such a bad thing.

The thing I found most difficult to get used to was the edge-to-edge screen. While it makes Apple’s offering look somewhat antiquated, it feels incredibly fragile. I kept thinking that if I drop the device, it’ll smash into a thousand pieces, even if several tests have found it to be pretty durable.

galaxy-s8-s8-plus-review-15

Once I realized that it’s just a smartphone, however, and not a Qianlong vase, I quickly got used to the slightly menacing design. In addition to looking fantastic, the Galaxy S8+ feels great in the hand. I’d even go as far as to say it’s the first handset from Samsung that actually feels premium (in terms of hardware and software).

Navigating around Android is surprisingly smooth for a unit that runs TouchWiz, or — as it’s now known — Samsung Experience. Applications open quickly and are responsive for the most part, but many developers are still yet to optimize their creations for the device’s 18.5:9 Infinity Display, which is a shame.

Even though I’ve only been using it for a week, I’ve come to the conclusion that Samsung has really hit the nail on the head with the Galaxy S8+. Sure, battery life could be a bit better, but Adaptive Fast Charging makes up for the need to carry a charger if you’re going on a long day trip.

Somehow, the Galaxy S8+ made the iPhone 7 Plus, a handset I hold close to my heart, feel antiquated, cumbersome and sluggish — and I’m thankful. I needed a change and desperately wanted to return to Android, but none of the smartphones on the market were well-rounded enough to compete with the iPhone.

Up until now, that is.

Samsung Pay launch in France might take place this September

Samsung continues to expand its mobile payments service in more markets across the globe. Samsung Pay went live in Hong Kong, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates just last week. There’s mounting evidence to support the claim that Samsung Pay will finally be launched in the United Kingdom on May 16.

According to a new report, Samsung is also planning to launch its mobile payments service in France this year. The report claims that Samsung Pay will be launched in September for users in France.

A local retailer claims that Samsung wants to launch Samsung Pay in France along with a new smartphone. If that really is the case, the launch might be tied up with the Galaxy Note 8 which is normally launched around the same time every year. Samsung has already confirmed that a new Galaxy Note handset is coming later this year.

It’s too soon to be sure right now which banks will be supporting Samsung Pay when it does launch in France. We should find that out closer to the actual launch.

Bixby Vision Amazon shopping feature goes live on Verizon’s Galaxy S8

Samsung wasn’t able to get the Bixby Voice feature ready at launch so even though it has been released for users in South Korea, those who own the new flagship in the United States will have to wait for a while before they can give voice commands to Samsung’s new voice assistant.

Verizon customers also found out that Bixby’s image recognition feature, which was available at launch, was crippled on their units. The feature is called Bixby Vision and it’s capable of identifying text and recognizing objects. It also links to Amazon so users can just point their smartphone’s camera to an object that interests them and get links to shop for it online.

Verizon confirmed that the feature wasn’t working on its units and that it was working to resolve it. It has now rolled out an update which enables Amazon shopping on Bixby vision. Image recognition works in the camera app and will now provide links to shop for the object on Amazon.

Samsung details contents of May security patch

Samsung has announced the contents of this month’s maintenance update. As outlined over on the firm’s Security Blog, the upgrade addresses a total of 54 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) in the Android OS and an additional 11 patches designed specifically for Galaxy smartphones.

Unfortunately, most of the patches are listed as “privately disclosed,” and that’s because Samsung can’t go into great detail as there are some bugs that may not have been discovered by hackers yet, and they may attempt to exploit them before the firmware is rolled out to all eligible devices.

Galaxy A5 (2016) is getting Android 7.0 Nougat in Russia

Samsung is rolling out the first Nougat update for its mid-range devices today. The update is going out to the Galaxy A5 (2016) in Russia, and we’ve received a video which shows the newest iteration of Android in action on the device. As expected, the user interface matches what we’ve seen on the Galaxy S7 and other flagship devices. We’re guessing the feature set is similar, too, although some are likely exclusive to the flagship phones.

The update carries firmware version A510FXXU4CQDK; it’s only available over the air at the moment, but we should be seeing the full firmware making its way online in the near future. If you have a Galaxy A5 (2016) and live in Russia, be sure to check if the update is available by heading into the Settings » About device » Software update menu. Take a look at a few screenshots from Nougat on the A5 (2016) below, embedded right after the video.

Galaxy S8 Tip: Capture custom screenshots and GIFs using the Smart Select Edge panel

Seasoned Galaxy Note users will know how the S Pen makes possible a slew of functionality that you won’t find on devices without a stylus. One of the features offered by the S Pen on the Galaxy Note lineup is the ability to capture random sections of content on the screen in different shapes and sizes. The feature is called Smart Select, and Samsung has now brought it over to the Galaxy S lineup as an Edge panel on the Galaxy S8 and S8+.

With Smart Select, you can capture custom screenshots in either rectangular or oval form, and also create GIFs from specific parts of the screen (which is great for capturing GIFs from videos on YouTube or other apps). Smart Select also lets you pin images on top of the screen so you can have that image on top of every other app. You can even grab text automatically from the captured images for copying or sharing it somewhere.

Screenshot_20170503-102109

So how does it work? Let’s take a look at it step-by-step. First, let’s talk about capturing screenshots; we’ll dive into capturing GIFs later on.

  1. First, you have to enable the Smart Select Edge panel from the Settings » Display » Edge screen » Edge panels menu. Of course, make sure the Edge panels toggle is turned to on, although that should already be the case if you haven’t touched the Edge screen settings before.
    Screenshot_20170503-133713
  2. Now, go to whatever app or screen that you want to capture a screenshot of. Once there, drag in the Edge panel from the edge of the display, then scroll to the Smart Select panel.
  3. Here, you will see four options: Rectangle, Oval, Animation, and Pin to top. For the sake of this guide, let’s go with the Rectangle option.
  4. After you’ve tapped Rectangle, you will be given control of just how much of the screen you want to capture. You can move around the window around the screen, and increase or decrease its size by dragging it from either of the four corners.
    Screenshot_20170503-103634
  5. Once you’re done adjusting the capture window, hit the Done button.

You should now see the captured screenshot on the screen, with various options for further actions. You can hit the Draw button to edit the screenshot, share it with other apps, or save it as an image in the gallery for editing or sharing later. If you’ve captured some text on the screen, you will also see an option to extract text. For first-time users, this might need an extra step of installing Samsung’s optical reader app, but once you’ve done that, you can come back to the screenshot and hit the Extract text button again to grab the text for sharing or copying.

Screenshot_20170503-103644

Capturing GIFs

This is clearly the most interesting option in Smart Select. You can capture 15 second GIFs from any video (or another GIF) that might be playing on the screen, in any app that can play videos. It’s great for sharing moments you think your friends would like to see, and there’s no fear of copyright issues as GIFs are limited to 15 second clips and do not have any audio.

To capture GIFs, the procedure remains the same as capturing a regular screenshot via the Smart Select Panel. Let’s take a look at it step-by-step again.

  1. Open the app that you want to capture GIFs from. This can be YouTube, Netflix or any other app that plays videos, including the browser. For this guide, we’re capturing a part of our official Galaxy S8 and S8+ review from YouTube.
  2. Start playing a video, but pause it at the moment you want to start capturing the GIF. Now, drag in the Edge panel from the edge of the screen, scroll to the Smart Select panel, and hit the Animation button.
  3. You will now see a customizable window on screen, which you can resize to make it cover whatever it is you’re trying to capture. In this case, that’s a YouTube video.
    Screenshot_20170503-105634
  4. Before you start recording, you can set the recording quality. High quality gets you a file around 10 MB in size, while Normal quality is around 4 MB. Normal quality is notably lower, but the choice is up to you.
  5. Now, before you hit the Record button, you need to start playing the video as that is not possible once the recording is underway. The best thing to do here to make sure you don’t miss the important part of the video is to start playing it a few seconds prior to the point where you want to start recording from. Of course, if you want to capture it right from the start of the video, simply hit the Play button followed quickly by a tap on the record button.
    Screenshot_20170503-105648

After you hit Record, the phone will make a 15-second GIF, although you can stop at any point in between. Once the GIF has been captured, you will get options to draw, share or save the file, just like you do with regular screenshots. If you save the file, you will find it in the gallery app with your regular photos and videos. The possibilities are endless, although it’s disappointing that Samsung doesn’t let you capture GIFs of you doing something other than watching videos on the phone.

SmartSelectGIF_2017-05-03-10-57-15

Pin screenshots to top of screen

Pinning a part of the screen isn’t something you’d need often. The best use case we can think of is when you want to type in text in one app by looking at the same text in another. This is particularly useful for copying text from SMS or a WhatsApp; you already have the option to copy messages in both SMS apps and WhatsApp, but you can’t copy a specific part of a message, which is where the pinning option can come in handy. Of course, your use case can vary depending on your needs.

To pin a part of the screen, here’s what you do.

  1. Go to the app or screen that you want to capture.
  2. Drag in the Edge panel from the edge of the screen, scroll to the Smart Select panel, and hit Pin on top.
  3. Arrange and resize the capture window around the content that you want to pin, then hit the Pin to top button. That’s it.
    Screenshot_20170503-110959

You will now see the captured part of the screen on top no matter what app or screen you’re on. You have three options here once you’ve pinned something. You can minimize the image so that it gets out of the way when you need it, or save it in the gallery, which will close Smart Select and remove the pinned image from your screen. Remember, the pinned image can be moved around on the screen no matter where you like.

That’s it for the Smart Select Edge panel, and how you use it is up to you. Hopefully, how it works is now clearer to you than it was before. Should you have any issues, don’t forget to let us know through the comments so we can help you get back on the right track. For more tips and tricks for the Galaxy S8 and S8+, go here.

Samsung’s Bixby can entertain you with its raps

Samsung launched Bixby Voice for the Korean market earlier this week, and the company showcased what its AI-powered digital voice assistant can do in a series of videos yesterday. It’s impressive to see how Samsung took a different approach with its voice assistant compared to Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant. Apart from obeying to your voice commands and perform various operations, Bixby appears to have some rap skills to keep you entertained.

South Korean consumers are now flocking to YouTube to upload videos showing Bixby play some raps on the Galaxy S8 and S8+. It’s not very high-quality hip-hop, but what more can you expect from a digital voice assistant? Interestingly, Bixby also took some potshots at Apple’s digital assistant in the third video, saying it’s better than Siri. Bixby Voice is available only in Korea as of now, and it will be expanded gradually to the US. Check out all the videos below:

PSA: You can keep your free Gear VR if you return the Galaxy S8 because of a manufacturing defect

According to the folks over at PhoneArena, customers in possession of a Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ with a manufacturing defect seeking a full refund can keep the complimentary Gear VR headset they received when they pre-ordered their device.

The information came to light earlier today when a Galaxy S8 owner reportedly contacted Samsung requesting a refund when he found that the update that started making the rounds recently didn’t resolve the frustrating ‘red tint issue‘ on his handset.

Up until now, customers who wanted to return their device were out of luck, but it’s believed the firm has changed its official refund policy to accommodate the bevy of people asking for their money back.

Galaxy A3 (2017) Nougat update might arrive soon

Samsung has gradually been rolling out the Android 7.0 Nougat update for its recent flagship devices. It won’t be long now before the company turns its attention to some of its mid-range handsets. There’s a reason now to believe that the Galaxy A3 (2017) Nougat update might arrive soon.

It appears that Samsung has started testing the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Galaxy A3 (2017). The handset has been spotted at GFXBench running Nougat. This is normally viewed as an indication that tests are being conducted on the update and that it should be out in a reasonable amount of time.

It goes without saying that if Samsung is testing Nougat for the Galaxy A3 (2017), the update for other devices in this series won’t be too far behind. We might see signs of tests being conducted on other devices in the next few days.

Hopefully, we’ll find out when Nougat is going to arrive for the Galaxy A (2017) series over the coming weeks.
