Galaxy S8 release date for Canada leaked

There has been a lot of speculation recently about the Galaxy S8 release date. We already know that the handset is going to be launched on March 29 but Samsung is yet to confirm when it’s going to be rolled out. Previous reports suggested that it would be released on April 21 but then a contradictory report surfaced which claimed that the release had been delayed by one week to April 28.

We’ve come across a new report today which claims to have received information about the Galaxy S8 release date for Canada from a “senior supply chain source with knowledge of one Canadian cell carrier’s plans.” The report claims that Galaxy S8 pre-orders will be shipped out in Canada on April 28.

Flagship smartphones often go on sale in the United States and Canada on the same day so it’s very likely that April 28 is when the Galaxy S8 makes it way to the US as well. Samsung is expected to release the Galaxy S8 in most markets across the globe on the same day so this might mean that customers across the globe will be able to get their hands on the new flagship come April 28.

Nothing has been officially confirmed as yet, though, so we must wait for Samsung to make the announcement which it’s going to do on March 29.

Samsung may supply iPhone processors once again starting next year

Apple has long sourced iPhone processors from Samsung but over the years it has shifted the business almost entirely to Taiwan’s TSMC. Even the handset that’s due this year, widely known as the iPhone 8, is expected to be powered by the 10nm A11 chip manufactured exclusively by TSMC.

However, according to a new report out of South Korea, Samsung is interested in winning back Apple’s business. It’s reportedly making “supplemental investments” in its 10nm production lines next month and will build out its 7nm facilities in 2018. It’s apparently advancing work on the 7nm facilities to get a headstart on TSMC.

This leads many to believe that Samsung is trying to win orders for next year’s iPhone which may have an A12 chip based on the 7nm process. It remains to be seen if Apple turns to Samsung once again, though, following all of the controversies it had to put up with for the iPhone 6. The Samsung-supplied chips for the iPhone 6 were claimed to be less power efficient and more prone to heating up compared to the chips made by TSMC.

Apple and Samsung still remain in business, though, as the former continues to source displays from its rival. Samsung is even expected to be the major supplier of OLED displays for this year’s iPhone.

Samsung on track to ramp up 10nm FinFET process technology production

Samsung today announced that it’s on track to ramp up production of the 10nm FinFET process technology with steady high yield in order to meet customer needs on schedule. The company has shipped more than 70,000 silicon wafers of its first-generation 10nm LPE (Low Power Early) to date after starting the industry’s first mass production of 10LTE in October last year. Both the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and Samsung’s Exynos 8895 are based on the 10nm process.

“Samsung’s 10nm LPE is a game changer in the foundry industry. Following the 10LPE version, the 10nm LPP and LPU will enter mass production by the end of the year and next year, respectively.” said Jongshik Yoon, Executive Vice President and Head of Foundry Business at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung has also announced the addition of the 8nm and the 6nm process technologies to its existing process roadmap. These new process technologies will provide improved scalability, performance and power advantages compared to existing process nodes. All of the innovations from the latest 10nm and 7nm technology will be ported over to 8nm and 6nm processes.

The company is going to share more details about its foundry technology roadmap as well as the technical details at the U.S. Samsung Foundry Forum that’s due to take place on May 24th.

This company’s Edge Sense affirms Samsung’s innovative mindset

We like to think of “common sense” as something everyone has, but I was told years ago that not everyone has it. That proves true on one level, though, for innovation in tech is a matter of common sense. Consumers that invest in mobile devices year in and year out expect companies to take the money they’ve invested and bring them the latest, greatest, and best to the market.

Plastering your brand name on a phone that looks practically the same for five years straight doesn’t qualify as innovation in any sense, and, as a consumer, turns me off. Innovation doesn’t turn me off, but mere iteration and imitation do.

Well, this “common sense” found in the tech world has yet to dawn on everyone. If you deem this statement harsh, just take a look at a few companies in Android (I’ll let your brain run wild with this one) that have pretty much done the same thing every year for the last few years.

Their phones may have sleek, metal designs – but that’s all that’s good about them. Their phones may even run fast without the slightest hint of lag – but their software puts the “b” in “bland” and “boring.” Some of these phones are half the cost of the Galaxy S7 edge, but they lack the originality and R&D work Samsung has implemented. You can always find a smartphone that has one noteworthy advantage, but few can find a Galaxy S7 edge rival that has the deadly combination of factors that have made the S7 edge the worldwide favorite. Smartphones cannot be rated great by one feature alone.

When it comes to the nomenclature of the S7 edge, though, Samsung gave it a name that would match its stand-out design. But few could ever have seen the Galaxy S7 edge attract competition because of its functionality. That seems to be the case for one Android OEM who has decided that it, too, wants to live on the edge as well with an upcoming, high-end premium device.

The HTC Ocean Note with its integrated stylus didn’t arrive on the market in January per HTC’s announcement, but a new device in the wings is said to contain an Edge Panel setup competitor. New leaks show a device running Android 7.1.1 Nougat containing a UI called “Edge Sense,” or, as leakster Upleak says, may be called “Sense Touch” when finalized, with the device on the February 2017 security patch. The Edge Sense is located in the Phone section right above “Display, gestures & buttons” and the usual HTC BoomSound settings.

HTC Edge Sense

http://ift.tt/2nFiDcH

http://ift.tt/2nFiDcH

We know little about Edge Sense, except to say that you can set it up – which means that there’s likely some customization involved. We do know the specs Upleaks provides, though: a 5.5-inch display (no resolution supplied, though we can assume Quad HD due to its high-end nature), 4GB/6GB RAM, 64GB of onboard storage, Sense AI Assistant, USB Type-C charging, and mobile VR support. No battery size is supplied here, though HTC should boost the 3,000mAh battery of last year’s 10 for such a high-powered device in light of VR support, at least.

While Edge Sense is not unique to HTC, the name of its upcoming UI could be. After all, when you think about it, it’s all too easy to maintain the same look and feel of devices these days. And yet, companies that do tend to fade into obscurity. Despite Sony’s excellence in the gaming and camera sectors, the company once known for its durable smartphones is no longer the household name that it was. And HTC, once at the forefront of Android, finds itself in terrible financial peril. It takes common sense to see that companies have to change with a changing tech industry and changing consumer demand.

When it comes to the edge, Samsung’s admirers and critics alike often tend to downplay functionality over form: the beauty of the edge is what many consumers look at, but to do this is to overlook Samsung’s own intention. The edge is not about mere form alone, but showcases the integration of form and functionality, of hardware and software, when they work well together. This is what I call Edge Sense, to borrow HTC’s upcoming UI name.

Samsung’s Galaxy S7 edge shows Samsung’s common sense as an industry giant who didn’t rest on its laurels until the rest of the industry discovered the futuristic design and functionality. And HTC didn’t wait until everyone else overwhelmingly adopted it to move forward with what will be the design and functionality trend of the future (yes, even bigger than AI). Yes, HTC has moved forward with Edge Sense – common sense that looks to compete in a market that wants to “think outside the box” of traditional smartphone design.

The existence of Edge Sense shows that Samsung is truly an industry mover and shaker: its design is not the only thing catching these days. And HTC’s upcoming UI testifies to that fact. The real icing on the cake is to see other OEMs follow. And as companies are already adopting form, it’s only a matter of time before functionality follows.

Edge Sense is not only the name of the upcoming HTC UI, it’s the mindset of the future.

Galaxy S8′s virtual home button may be pressure sensitive, Note 8 might have 3D Touch technology

It’s pretty clear now that the Galaxy S8 is going to have a row of virtual navigation and home buttons. The fingerprint sensor has been relocated to the back and the physical home button has been ditched in favor of soft keys.

According to a new report out of South Korea, the Galaxy S8′s virtual home button may be pressure sensitive. If the report is true this would mean that the Galaxy S8′s virtual home button will open up different menus based on how hard or gently you press down on it.

Samsung Display has reportedly been working on a pressure sensitive OLED display for the iPhone 8. It’s expected to be one of the biggest suppliers of displays for Apple’s first OLED iPhone. Since Apple introduced its own pressure sensitive technology called 3D Touch with the iPhone 6s, future models need to have it as well, even those that might have an OLED display.

The company has reportedly been ramping its efforts to integrate a 3D Touch sensor in the OLED display. It’s believed to have showcased the display technology to partners at a VIP meeting during the Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona last month.

Bear in mind that this isn’t the first time that Samsung Display has made a pressure sensitive OLED display. The pressure sensitive OLED display that you find in the Huawei P9 is supplied by Samsung Display.

Samsung is now expected to partly showcase this technology on the Galaxy S8 by making the virtual home button pressure sensitive. The report also suggests that after this partial adoption the next flagship smartphones like the Galaxy Note 8 are possibly going to feature a full pressure sensitive or for lack of a better word, a 3D Touch display.

Samsung confirms what its new artificial intelligence virtual assistant will be called

We have been hearing for a few months now that Samsung has developed a new artificial intelligence-powered virtual assistant that it’s going to introduce with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. Previous reports have suggested that this virtual assistant is going to be called Bixby.

Samsung appears to have confirmed the name of its new virtual assistant on its Italian website. The updated privacy information page not only confirms that the artificial intelligence virtual assistant will be called Bixby but also that it will eventually make its way to non-flagship Samsung handsets as well.

Bixby is believed to be more capable than its rivals that include the likes of Siri and Cortana. It may have support for up to 8 languages at launch as well. Samsung will provide more information about all of the features that it offers when the Galaxy S8 is formally announced.

The Galaxy S8 is due to be unveiled at an event in London and New York City on March 29.

Galaxy Unpacked 2017 app wants you to sign up for something unspecified

Samsung confirmed late last month that it’s going to conduct the official launch event for the Galaxy S8 on March 29. It has now released a Galaxy Unpacked 2017 app for both Android and iOS but hasn’t really detailed what the app is for.

When you launch the Galaxy Unpacked 2017 app for the first time after downloading it you are required to sign up. When you try to sign up it returns an error and says that registrations will begin on Wednesday, March 22nd. However, it doesn’t reveal what you’re registering for.

Perhaps Samsung is going to offer the live stream of its March 29 event through this app or it might simply be for the purposes of generating email leads that it can then reach out to with news about the new handset when it does arrive.

This is just speculation right now but we’ll know soon enough what it is that the Galaxy Unpacked 2017 app wants you to sign up for. You can head over to the Google Play Store right now and download it on your device.

Samsung to invest $8.7 billion to build new production lines for DRAM chipsets

To maintain its number-one position in the memory semiconductor segment and to cope up with the soaring demand, Samsung has decided to invest around $8.7 billion. The South Korean semiconductor giant will use this capital to build new production lines for DRAM chipsets. The semiconductor market is said to change every month rapidly, and the choice of products to be manufactured at a plant is decided after its completion.

Samsung will start manufacturing 18nm or more advanced DRAM chips from its new line in Hwaseong in the next couple of years. The company is currently assembling a task force for the said expansion. It plans to exclusively produce NAND flash chips at its Xian plant in China, Pyeongtaek, and partially in Hwaseong of South Korea. Processing chipsets would be fabricated at its plants in Austin (the US), Giheung (South Korea), and Hwaseong (South Korea).

A Samsung official was quoted saying, “Considering the construction period of about two years, the speed of company’s research and development (R&D) and the yield rate of process conversion, it is not clear whether products from the new line at Hwaseong plant will be 18nm DRAMs, which are mass produced currently, or more advanced products.

Samsung may offer real-time VR broadcasting of 2018 Winter Olympics

Samsung is planning to offer real-time VR video broadcasting of the 2018 Winter Olympics to viewers through virtual reality headsets. This will make all the viewers feel as if they are right at the event. However, this will not be the first time that Samsung offers VR video coverage of an event. The company offered 360-degree videos from the Rio 2016 Olympics, offering exclusive video content to Gear VR users. The company will use 5G networks for the first time for such a coverage of a sports event.

We plan to offer virtual technology so that, let’s say, viewers with a VR headset in Seoul can enjoy the sports game as if they are at the scene. We are in discussion with the International Olympic Committee and Olympic Broadcasting Services to utilize our VR technology during the Olympics,” said Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Marketing Director Cha Young-Tae at the meeting attended by the ICT vice minister. The meeting was also attended by other Korean tech firms including KT, LG, and SKT.

Samsung is also planning to set up promotional centres in Seoul where it will offer entertainment VR rides that were unveiled during MWC 2017 last month.

Samsung’s next Tizen-powered smartphone has been spotted at the FCC

An unannounced Samsung-branded smartphone has been spotted on the FCC’s online database. Sadly, the documentation doesn’t reveal anything about the device, other than that it sports the model number SM-Z400F; leading us to believe we’re looking at the so-called Samsung Z4.

If you’ve been following SamMobile closely, you’ll know that the next major build of the open-source operating system — Tizen 3.0 — is rumored to debut on the recently-rumored Samsung Z4, and seeing as it’s now been granted approval by the FCC, it shouldn’t be too much longer until arrives.
