Caviar unveils the Galaxy S21, a gold-wrapped Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

If you thought $5,210 for the Caviar Galaxy Z Flip was too high-of-a-price for what is essentially a standard Z Flip wrapped in gold then you might want to strap yourselves in. The Russian luxury brand has now announced a special edition Galaxy S20 Ultra, called the Galaxy S21, which is even more ostentatious than the foldable device. It has a starting price of 344,000 rubles ($5,049) but can cost as much as 2,690,000 rubles or the rough equivalent of $39,544.

Despite the moniker, the so-called Galaxy S21 is simply a Galaxy S20 Ultra adorned with materials including gold, onyx, rubies, sapphires, etc. Caviar seemingly targets gambling enthusiasts with its latest creation and describes these expensive products as lucky charms…

As a result, the company created four variants of the same device, one for each playing card suit, as well as a fifth variant whose back panel resembles a Joker card. No, not the DC Comics Joker that was stamped on the back of the Galaxy Z Flip, but an actual Joker card from a regular set of playing cards.

It’s those four-suit models that cost 344,000 rubles ($5,049) each. For the Joker variant, customers will have to pay a staggering 2,690,000 rubles ($39,544).

The Galaxy S21 design backstory makes little sense, but the target audience probably doesn’t care

As usual, Caviar is releasing its Galaxy S21 in limited quantities. Only 21 copies of each model will be created, and as if to further hammer home the fact that this series was created for gambling enthusiasts, the number 21 is not coincidental.

It wasn’t chosen because the Galaxy S21 is oh so much better than the Galaxy S20 Ultra that it requires a sequel’s name. Instead, Caviar confirmed that ’21’ was picked simply because it represents the best combination of cards you can achieve in BlackJack.

This doesn’t explain why a Joker card would be required in a deck of BlackJack (it isn’t) and why there’s no 10-value card (like a King or Queen) to go along with the four Aces.

In other words, the design backstory of the Galaxy S21 makes as much sense as paying nearly $40,000 for a smartphone wrapped in gold. And I suspect that people who would be willing to buy the Galaxy S21 won’t care even a bit about these inconsistencies. I know I don’t, at the end of the day, but then again, I’m not the target audience.

Galaxy A31 won’t dodge the market for much longer, support page is live

The Galaxy A31 is already a little bit late to the party if we consider the fact that its predecessor was announced 13 months ago. The good news is that we might not have to wait for much longer before we’ll be able to buy it. That is, at least in Russia, where Samsung appears to have made the necessary preparations on its website ahead of the Galaxy A31’s release.

Discovered by our colleagues over at GalaxyClub, the official support page for the Galaxy A31 in Russia is now live. The page doesn’t contain any details pertaining to the device itself, nor does it reveal the phone’s design, but its existence strongly hints at an imminent launch.

We have had some bits of information regarding the phone’s specifications for some time. A couple of months ago we reported how the Galaxy A31 should have a 48-megapixel main camera, same as the Galaxy A51, and an even larger 5,000mAh battery. Storage options should include 64GB and 128GB, and a recent benchmark revealed that the device is seemingly powered by the MediaTek Helio P65 chipset as opposed to an Exynos SoC developed in-house.

Of course, the Galaxy A31 won’t be limited to the Russian market even though support pages don’t seem to be live anywhere else just yet. Reports of the Galaxy A31 being planned for a European release have been floating around for a few weeks now. Pricing details are unknown but it could cost around €250, give or take. We’ll keep you up to speed as soon as we find out more so stay tuned.

Galaxy A41 running Android 10 gets Wi-Fi and Bluetooth approval

The upcoming Galaxy A41 has been approved by two big regulatory agencies earlier today, namely the Wi-Fi Alliance, and Bluetooth. The device carries the model number ‘SM-A415F’ and Bluetooth outright confirms that the final product will be released as the Galaxy A41 – not that this would surprise anyone who can put two and two together and has a bit of knowledge on Samsung’s history with model numbers.

The Wi-Fi Alliance application for the Galaxy A41 doesn’t reveal a lot about the device, aside from it running Android 10, while Bluetooth simply confirms that the phone will have Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity. This is par for the course, but the fact that the phone has been approved by two regulatory bodies on the same day could indicate that Samsung is readying the device for the consumer market.

In theory, the Galaxy A41 should be around the corner, as it’s been a year since its predecessor, the Galaxy A40, was introduced. On the other hand, Samsung hasn’t been very true to its usual yearly launch schedule for the Galaxy A (2020) series, so it’s difficult to predict exactly when the Galaxy A41 might debut.

The smartphone’s 3,500mAh battery was also approved by Safety Korea last month, and alleged press renders showcasing the overall design have also leaked this week. All the clues so far point toward an official announcement by the end of the month, but we’ll have to wait for Samsung to confirm whether or not it will happen.

Samsung Account update makes 2-factor authentication (2FA) mandatory

We’ve previously discussed how Samsung should consider improving the way it informs Samsung Account users of the fact that they can enable 2-factor authentication (2FA) for extra security. After numerous celebrities in South Korea have had their accounts hacked, and following the recent data leak incident involving Find My Mobile notifications, Samsung has now decided to make 2FA mandatory with its latest update to the Samsung Account application.

The way mandatory 2FA seems to work now is, new or existing Samsung Account owners who log in will be required to authenticate their accounts by entering their phone number to receive a code. This will happen regardless of whether your existing account has 2FA enabled or disabled, hence the word ‘mandatory.’

You’ll have to log out and log back in again to get mandatory 2FA

Oddly enough, users who already are logged into their accounts – and we suspect they’re in the majority – won’t be prompted to re-authenticate after the update. Granted, their accounts will still be secure in case someone else tries to log in using their credentials, as they will be faced with the mandatory 2FA screen. Nevertheless, many users are likely to remain unaware of this change until they log out and log back in again by their own volition. In other words, Samsung has made 2FA better by making it mandatory, and this is certainly a welcomed addition. But the company still has a bit of work to do on making this feature easier to find and understand by the average user.

Until then, you can always refer to your guide on how to enable 2FA manually on your Samsung account to keep it secure even without this latest update.

Now, the update is not yet available everywhere, and unlike most other Samsung apps that can be checked for updates manually, Samsung Account cannot. Therefore, you’ll have to wait for the update to reach your device in your region.

Thanks, @MehdiMa0507, for sharing the screenshot below.

New coronavirus case prompts Samsung to shut down Gumi plant again

Today, March 6, Samsung has once again shut down its Gumi smartphone manufacturing plant in South Korea after an employee was confirmed to carry the coronavirus (COVID-19) infection. According to Yonhap News citing a Samsung Electronics official, the plant will remain closed for one day and should return to the usual schedule on March 7 without suffering any market disruptions, i.e., supply shortcomings.

The factory in Gumi, South Korea, is primarily used for the manufacturing of premium devices including the Galaxy Z Flip. This isn’t the first time the factory had to be temporarily shut down since the beginning of the year. Samsung first took this safety measure a couple of weeks ago. It then shut down the factory again last weekend as new COVID-19 cases have been found among employees.

The report states that the latest coronavirus incident will not cause any market disruptions, meaning that any devices manufactured at Gumi – including the Galaxy Z Flip – should continue to be shipped according to the original schedule.

That’s not to say Galaxy Z Flip stocks have been great so far, regardless of the implications of COVID-19. The device was released in limited quantities, to begin with, and it sold out fairly quickly wherever it went on sale, including Canada, China, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, the United States, and more. Stocks continue to be replenished, but at this point, whether or not you’re able to buy the Galaxy Z Flip in your country seems to come down to luck.

Galaxy Z Flip gets an update with March security patch

Samsung has kicked off the rollout of a new software update for its clamshell foldable, the Galaxy Z Flip, in the United States. The update is for unlocked units and is the second one the Z Flip is receiving since it went on sale in mid-February. The update has build number F700U1UEU1ATBC and comes bundled with the March security patch, which Samsung has also released for other flagships including the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S10, Galaxy Note 10, and Galaxy Note 9.

The build number indicates that more than the March security patch is included, though at this point we’re not aware of the full changelog. The first Galaxy Z Flip update introduced a couple of camera features that were supposed to be present on the device out of the box, and we can assume the latest software release makes other improvements to enhance the overall user experience for customers. We’ll add details about what the update contains once we have them; feel free to let us know yourself if you own a Galaxy Z Flip and have received the update already.

The update can be downloaded over the air from the Settings » Software update menu on the phone. We also have firmware for the device available in our firmware archive for those who want to manually update using a Windows computer.
