This tiny product shows how arrogant Apple can be compared to Samsung

Apple is known for making decisions that only make sense to the company even if it has countless users wanting the exact opposite. I’m sure many would have loved to see expandable storage on the iPhone. However, Apple continues to keep expandable storage a distant dream for its smartphones.

This is part of the aura that it has created for itself. It’s the impression that Apple knows what’s best for its users. That customers should be content with what the company offers them and not think too much about what could have been done differently.

Some would call it shrewd business acumen while others might view it as arrogance. Apple derives this power from the very ecosystem that it has created. It has tied customers to this ecosystem so effectively that leaving this walled garden would require them to make significant changes.

iMessage is the perfect example of this approach. Apple can make an Android version of its popular messaging app but it chooses not to. iMessage users will find it difficult to switch, particularly if most of their friends also use the app. They won’t have access to the same featured.

“iMessage on Android would simply serve to remove an obstacle to iPhone families giving their kids Android phone.” This was a concern expressed by Craig Federighi, Apple’s current SVP of software engineering to another top Apple executive.

It’s business, after all, and Apple leverages the hold it has on its customers to maximize its returns. Take one of its new products as an example. The Apple AirTag is a tiny tracking accessory that uses advanced tech like UWB to help you find lost items. Samsung’s competitor to this product is the Galaxy SmartTag+.

Apple is selling its tracking puck for $29 each. It’s not the price that’s shocking, it’s the fact that you need to buy an accessory to get the most benefit from this product. The AirTag itself doesn’t have a loop or a keyhole that would allow it to be attached to your keychain or other valuables.

The most you could do without an accessory is slip the tracker inside the pocket of your purse or bag. To extend its versatility, Apple will happily sell you a loop for $29 and a keyring for $35. Suddenly that small $29 tracker ends up costing you more than $50. If you’re feeling really posh, you can spend $449 on an AirTag Hermès luggage tag.

There’s no such limitation on the Galaxy SmartTag+. Any loop or keyring can be easily attached to it without the need for accessories. Both products do basically the same thing but how they’re made accessible to customers is poles apart.

Call it arrogance or the mother of all upsells, but limiting the AirTag’s versatility to force the sales of relevant accessories is simply a power move. Sure, Apple can point at the thriving third-party accessory market and say that more cost effective options are available. However, that doesn’t change the fact that customers don’t get a choice. If they want to expand the ways they can attach the tracker to their items, they must purchase an accessory.

At the end of the day, Apple remains unbothered by the impression this would send. It knows that loyal customers would happily spend upwards of $50 on a tracker because they want everything in their Apple product ecosystem to work together seamlessly. Or they could just drill a hole in the AirTag to thread a loop through. Apparently that works too.

Samsung is bringing the 120Hz refresh rate to the iPhone 13

Apple fans have been waiting on the company to introduce the higher 120Hz refresh rate on its iPhones. That hasn’t happened so far. There have been a lot of reports over the past few months highlighting the possibility of the iPhone 13 finally bringing higher refresh rates.

The Cupertino company already relies on Samsung Display for the bulk of the OLED panels that are used in its iPhones. So it won’t come as a surprise to find out that the 120Hz panels will also be supplied by Samsung Display.

Samsung’s OLED panels will bring you the first 120Hz iPhone

According to a new report out of South Korea, Samsung Display will be supplying low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) displays for the top-tier iPhone 13 models. These would presumably be the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The LTPO tech is crucial for bringing the higher 120Hz refresh rate to the iPhones. It results in a more power-efficient backplane that allows for the enhanced refresh rate without the battery life taking a big hit. Samsung Display is reportedly going to be the exclusive supplier of these displays to Apple.

This won’t be the only Samsung-made part inside the new iPhones. Samsung Electro-Mechanics will provide the rigid flexible printed circuit boards (RFPCB) to Apple for the new iPhones. The RFPCB is the part that connects the OLED panel to the main board.

Despite Apple reducing its reliance on Samsung Display, the fruit company is still going to buy a lot of panels. According to one estimate, Samsung Display will supply over 110 million panels to Apple for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 this year.

T-Mobile Galaxy S10+ gets One UI 3.1 in latest major update

A new firmware update is being rolled out for the Galaxy S10+ by T-Mobile in the United States. It’s a hefty update that makes a few additions to the device. The update is now rolling out over the air.

T-Mobile is one of the largest mobile networks in the United States. This latest update will thus be sent out to potentially thousands of Galaxy S10+ owners in the country.

Galaxy S10+ receives a new firmware update on T-Mobile

T-Mobile is rolling out firmware version G975USQU5GUCG for the Galaxy S10+. The update comes in just under 2GB. It features the security patch for the month of March 2021. It’s not quite the latest patch, considering that some unlocked units have already started receiving the May patch elsewhere.

You can use our new tool to find out if your device has the latest security patch available for it. This One UI 3.1 update further improves the feature set of the devices. It also makes improvements to the device stability and fixes a few bugs.

Among the handful of features that One UI 3.1 brings include video call effects. This feature lets you blur the background in video calls made with apps like Google Duo and Zoom. One UI 3.1 also enables you to remove the location data from photos before sharing them online.

Galaxy S10+ owners on T-Mobile can expect to receive an over-the-air update notification on their handsets soon. The latest firmware for this device is also available for download from our database.

Thanks, Tom!

Galaxy S20 and Note 20 get Dual Recording camera feature with latest update

One of the most useful new camera features introduced on the Galaxy S21 lineup is Director’s View. It’s a dedicated shooting mode that lets you see the feed from and switch between all rear cameras while recording videos and also enables you to record video via the front camera at the same time.

When Samsung updated older Galaxy flagships, such as the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 lineups, with some of the Galaxy S21 camera features, Director’s View didn’t come along for the ride. But while Director’s View is still missing from all Samsung flagships except the Galaxy S21 series, Samsung has introduced a somewhat stripped down version to the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 series with the latest software update for these devices.

Front and rear camera recording at the same time, but no Director’s View

Those who have received this particular update, which includes the May 2021 security patch, on their Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, Galaxy S20 Ultra, Galaxy Note 20, or Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will find a new mode called Dual Recording in the camera app. As the name suggests, this mode lets you record video from both the front and primary rear camera at the same time, with the feed from one of the two cameras showing up in a small window at the top that can be moved around freely.

Here’s a short video showing how this mode works:

It’s unclear at this time if the Dual Recording camera feature is headed to other flagships, like the Galaxy S20 FE and Samsung’s foldable phones, but we will let you know once we are able to confirm. For now, if you own a Galaxy S20 or Note 20 series smartphone, you should see if the May security update is available for your device from its Settings » Software update menu. It could take a few days before the update arrives in your country, so you will have to be patient if it doesn’t show up just yet.

U.S. Galaxy S20 series adds to the May 2021 security update guard

Not too long after it started reaching Galaxy S20-series devices on the other side of the world, the May 2021 security patch has now also appeared on a number of Samsung’s 2020 flagships in the United States. More specifically, we sighted this month’s firmware release in Kentucky, distributed via the Bluegrass Cellular network. The over-the-air patches confirmed to be rolling out already are designated as the G981U1UES2DUD4, G986U1UES2DUD4, and the G988BXXU7DUDB for the Galaxy S20 5G, Galaxy S20+ 5G, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G.

Midwesterners using one of Bluegrass’s prepaid plans can hence already try triggering the newest security update manually. To do so, navigate to Settings, Software update, and go with the Download and install option at the final menu. That isn’t to say every other telecom in the country won’t be following suit, as with every other U1 release for Samsung’s Android devices. But this particular firmware just happens to have hit Bluegrass first.

What’s next for the ‘silent generation’ of the Galaxy S family?

As per usual, our firmware section holds all of the system images you’ll ever need if you were to flash the May 1st, 2021 security update to your device manually. Which isn’t recommended to anyone bar the most hardcore, experienced crowd of veteran tinkerers. Just don’t forget to backup should you decide to take matters into your own hands, either way.

The May 2021 firmware release originally reached the first Galaxy S20 devices last Wednesday, even before its titular month actually appeared on the calendar, having originally appeared in Germany. Naturally, Bluegrass Cellular will hardly be the only U.S. telecom operator to secure an always-warranted patch for their Galaxy S20-owning customers. And yet most people with carrier-locked models are likely to be in for another tedious wait, as is tradition.

Samsung Galaxy Fold joins the May security update club

We’re barely into the month of May but Samsung isn’t wasting any time in bringing the latest Android and Galaxy-exclusive security fixes to as many of its phones as possible. A couple of the company’s flagships and mid-range phones have been updated with the May security patch already, and another one is now joining the fray.

The Galaxy Fold is being updated with the latest security patch, with the initial release starting with France and no doubt set to expand to more markets before the week is over. The new firmware version is F900FXXU5EUD7, and it includes more than just security enhancements.

The May security patch’s presence on Galaxy devices continues to expand

The update improves the performance of the camera, but the changelog doesn’t say if some of the Galaxy S21 camera features (such as the ability to use the ultrawide camera in Pro and Pro Video modes) that hit the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and other Galaxy flagships recently are included in the package. Quick Share, Samsung’s intuitive data sharing feature, is getting improvements as well.

Quick Share was recently introduced to Microsoft Windows with Samsung’s latest laptops, though improvements to the feature on Galaxy phones and tablets don’t seem to have anything to do with its debut on the desktop. The only thing that changes is that Quick Share can now be accessed from the Advanced features section of the device settings instead of just the notification shade.

As usual, the latest update can be downloaded over the air by going into the device’s Settings app, selecting Software update, and hitting the Download and install option. The new firmware is also available in our archive for those interested in skipping the queue and installing the update on their Galaxy Fold right away.

Galaxy S21 starts getting May 2021 security patch in India

The Galaxy S21 was the first Android smartphone in the world to get the May 2021 security patch. The update was first released in Germany last week and then rolled out to other Asian and European markets. Now, Samsung has released the latest security patch to the Galaxy S21 series in India.

The Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra are now receiving a new software update in India. The update comes with firmware version G991BXXU3AUDA for the Galaxy S21, G996BXXU3AUDA for the Galaxy S21+, and G998BXXU3AUDA for the Galaxy S21 Ultra. The update has a download size of well over 1GB, so we advise you to use a Wi-Fi network to download the update.

The official changelog mentions that the update improves the performance of the camera. It also improves Quick Share and fixes various security vulnerabilities. As usual, the new update comes with bug fixes and stability improvements. Samsung has also mentioned that users won’t be able to downgrade to older software once the new update is installed.

If you are a Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, or Galaxy S21 Ultra user in India, you might have received a notification for it already. If you haven’t received the update yet, you can check for it manually by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. Alternatively, you can download the appropriate firmware from our firmware section and flash the phone manually.

Are you facing this issue with S Pen on your Galaxy Note 10?

The Galaxy Note 10 and the Galaxy Note 10+ seem to be facing a weird issue related to the S Pen. Multiple users have started complaining of the S Pen on their Galaxy Note 10 series smartphone getting disconnected every now and then. This can cause a major issue while using features like Air Actions.

The S Pen disconnection issue is not completely new, but it is now happening frequently. Some Galaxy Note 10 users claim that the issue started appearing after installing either the March 2021 or the April 2021 security patch. However, there is no clear evidence yet that supports this theory. Whatever the reason is, users are getting irritated by this issue and Samsung needs to solve the problem as soon as possible.

Some users say that whenever they take the S Pen out of its silo, they get the disconnection error. Even after they connect the S Pen again, they get the error message again. When the S Pen gets disconnected from the Galaxy Note 10 or the Note 10+, users can still use it to navigate, scroll, and touch the screen, but they can’t use Air Actions to control the camera app, volume navigating the photos in the Gallery app.

Most users who are facing this issue have ended up disabling Air Actions altogether so that they don’t have to face the irritating error messages every few minutes. Some users have been facing this issue since mid-2020 and there no solution in sight yet. After Samsung failed to solve this issue, a few users reached out to us to point out this problem in the hope that the engineers would read about it and do something about the issue.

Are you facing this problem on your Galaxy Note 10 (or any Galaxy Note series) smartphone? Let us know in the comments section below.

Samsung suppliers drooling over the Galaxy A range

Samsung’s newly debuted Galaxy A range of devices is making some of its closest suppliers rather excited about their business prospects. Particularly following the tech giant’s first-quarter performance report from early April. Between the early release of the Galaxy S21 range and a number of more aggressive smartphone promotions targeting the most competitive markets in the world, Samsung hasn’t looked this hungry in a while now.

Hungry to once again cement its spot as the world’s largest smartphone marker by the end of the year, that is. And now, the Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A72 are promising to help drive that point home.

Are mid-rangers the key to Samsung’s continued dominance in this decade?

Sources from Samsung’s supply chain are also hopeful about what the ultra-competitive Galaxy A series means for their bottom lines.

A number of component manufacturers badly needs a win following not just last year’s panic, but Samsung’s growingly synergistic view of logistics; the thing making it rely on its sister companies way more than it used to in the past. As an example, the word on the street is that its camera module purchases took a six-percent dive throughout the first quarter of the year.

This level of anticipation isn’t entirely unprecedented in any bar the most entry-level of smartphone price ranges. And yet the overall optimism surrounding the Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A72 is surely underlined by how erratically unpredictable last year was in terms of business results.

But it’s not just the camera tech that’s now promising to revitalize Far Eastern businesses. The prospects of even more astonishing OLED screens are up there, as well – excellent OLED screens are offered by both 2021 additions to the Galaxy A family, which starts at under $350 depending on the market.

Value lovers, unite: Galaxy A01 already receiving Android 11

Imagine buying the Galaxy A01 a year ago and getting the Android 11 upgrade ahead of the OnePlus 7T Pro. Pure value is what this little guy is, as it once again became evident these past few days. Namely, Samsung has already cleared the One UI build for the Galaxy A01 last week and the over-the-air upgrade has already been spotted in a number of Asian markets, as well as the still-Eurasian Russia.

We’re still waiting for confirmation of a truly global rollout, though one shouldn’t be too far away, at this point. The firmware in question is labeled as the release A015FXXU4BUD8 or A015GXXU4BUD8, depending on the exact model of the device.

Two more years of this, you say?

As has been the case for a couple of months by now, the Android 11-based distro now arriving to the Galaxy A01 happens to be One UI 3.1, not just 3.0. Though the extra bells and whistles between the two might not be terribly obvious on this budget-friendly smartphone. Oh, and the OS upgrade ships with the April 2021 security patch, but it’s likely that the May update is already being fast-tracked at Samsung.

Not that it was ever in doubt, but seeing Samsung’s promise of timely and consistent software updates for its whole mobile portfolio come to life is a truly surreal sight. Especially on this end of the price spectrum – the Galaxy A01 started at barely over a €100 early last year. It’s also one of the rare few entry-level devices that Samsung decided to import into the U.S. lately. Not that the two are necessarily connected beyond correlation; this is just a reminder of how ferociously competitive the mobile industry remains at every level.

Galaxy Z Fold 2 at Sprint and T-Mobile gets April 2021 security patch

Samsung had released the April 2021 security patch to its flagship foldable smartphone early last month. However, the update was limited to unlocked units of the Galaxy Z Fold 2. A couple of weeks ago, the update made it to the Galaxy Z Fold 2 on Verizon’s network in the US. Now, the same update is available for more carrier variants in the country.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is now receiving a new software update on Sprint’s and T-Mobile’s network in the US. The update carries firmware version F916USQU1DUCE and includes the April 2021 security patch. This update fixes various critical security vulnerabilities found in Galaxy smartphones and includes 21 fixes from Samsung and more than 30 fixes from Google.

The new software also brings some new camera features to the Galaxy Z Fold 2, including the ability to use the ultrawide camera in Pro and Pro Video modes. There are three new Portrait effects: Backdrop, High-Key Mono, and Low-Key Mono. The camera can also detect low-light conditions and automatically activate the Night Mode feature in Photo, Portrait, and Hyperlapse modes.

If you are a Galaxy Z Fold 2 user in the US on Sprint’s or T-Mobile’s network, you can check for the update by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. You can also download the latest firmware files from our firmware section and flash the phone manually.

Future Galaxy phones may use this new technology for better battery life

Are you tired of degrading battery life on your Galaxy smartphone with each passing year? We are too. Typical smartphone batteries lose up to 20% of their original capacity within one year of usage. Samsung’s newer-generation batteries introduced with the Galaxy S8 lose just 5% of the original capacity after one year but it is still not good enough when you are considering using a phone for 2-3 years. But what if we tell you that new technology can practically solve the battery degradation problem for good?

A team of scientists working at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) has discovered a new material that helps batteries in retaining 95% of their original capacity for five years (or even longer). The negative terminals inside current batteries use a binder material called Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF), and its performance isn’t great. After just 500 recharges, typical batteries using PVDF lose up to 35% of the original capacity. This results in degraded battery life on smartphones after one or two years.

The JAIST team has discovered a new binder material called Bis-imino-acenaphthenequinone-Paraphenylene (BP) that allows the battery to maintain 95% of its original capacity for more than 1,700 recharges. This translates to around recharges for five years or more. Professor Noriyoshi Matsumi who led this study said, “The realization of durable batteries will help in the development of more reliable products for long-term use. This will encourage consumers to purchase more expensive battery-based assets like electric vehicles, which will be used for many years.

This new technology can not only help smartphones, tablets, laptops, and wearables but also batteries inside electric vehicles. It will be extremely useful when implemented in modern smartphones that offer blazing-fast charging speeds. Whether or not this technology gets adopted by Samsung remains to be seen, though. But we hope that the South Korean tech brand ends up using this technology to put an end to our low-battery FOMO once and for all.
