SamMobile Daily Recap: June 12, 2017 — Galaxy C10, Galaxy Note FE and more!

Galaxy Note FE may be released On July 7 with Bixby

There have been countless reports about the refurbished Galaxy Note 7 ever since Samsung confirmed that it was going to release the refurbished variant in the near future. Reports suggest that it will be called the Galaxy Note FE or “Fan Edition” and that it may be priced at over $600.

A new report out of South Korea suggests that Samsung is going to release the Galaxy Note FE in South Korea on July 7. Samsung apparently wanted to release the handset by the end of June but has decided to delay it by a week.

It reportedly decided to do that before it has increased the number of refurbished units it’s going to sell from 150,000 to 450,000. The refurbished units will be sold through the country’s three top mobile carriers.

It’s also claimed that when the Galaxy Note FE is launched next month, it’s going to have Samsung’s voice assistant Bixby on board. If this information is correct that the Galaxy Note FE will become the second smartphone from Samsung to feature Bixby.

Since Bixby has only been launched properly in South Korea, all of the assistant’s features are likely to be accessible on the Galaxy Note FE as they are on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ for users in the country.

Samsung is yet to make an official announcement concerning the release of the refurbished Galaxy Note 7.

Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro gets a price cut in India

The Galaxy C9 Pro, which was launched in India earlier this year with a price tag of INR 36,990 ( approx. $575), has now received a price cut. Samsung has now dropped the price of its costliest Galaxy C-series device to INR 31,990 (approx. $499). The company recently dropped the price of the Galaxy C7 Pro from INR 27,990 (approx. $435) to INR 25,990 (approx. $404).

The Galaxy C9 Pro features a 6-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display, a 16-megapixel primary camera, and a 16-megapixel secondary camera. Both cameras feature f/1.9 aperture and 1080p video recording. Under the hood, it is equipped with a 64-bit, octa-core Snapdragon 653 processor. There’s 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. A 128GB storage variant of the smartphone might be released soon in a few markets.

The phone also comes with stereo speakers, a fingerprint sensor, storage expansion slot, dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, and a large 4,000 mAh battery. There’s a USB Type-C and 3.5mm headphone ports. The phone was first launched in China, then its availability expanded to Malaysia, India, and a few other markets. The phone is costlier than the Galaxy A7 (2017), but it misses out on Samsung Pay and water resistance.

[Poll] Which is your preferred default mobile browser, Samsung Internet or Google Chrome?

Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones come with two mobile browsers out of the box, Samsung Internet and Google Chrome. It’s up to the user to decide which they want to use as their default browser. We’d like to know which one you’ve picked as your preferred browser and why.

Google Chrome is present by default on all Android smartphones for a simple reason: Google owns Android. So it goes without saying that Chrome will get a place on Android devices whether OEMs like it or not. On the other hand, Samsung has significantly improved its own browser. As we mentioned in our recent review of Samsung Internet, the browser is fast, efficient and packed with features.

Vote below and let us know which of the two browsers you’ve picked and why. If you’ve opted for a completely different third-party browser, do share with us in the comments your reasons for doing so.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Samsung’s Q2 2017 operating profit expected to hit new high

Financial analysts are bullish on Samsung’s prospects for the second quarter of this year. They predict that the company’s Q2 2017 operating profit is going to hit a new record high. Most estimates suggest that the operating profit will be in the range of 12 trillion won or $10.6 billion to over 13 trillion won.

Several securities firms have released reports that predict very strong performance from Samsung in the second quarter of this year. They’re focusing on the company’s operating profits surpassing the 13 trillion won mark for the first time which would be a historic milestone for the company.

Samsung reported its highest operating profit ever in the third quarter of 2013 when it hit 10.16 trillion won. The company came close to crossing it in the first quarter of this year when it posted an operating profit of 9.9 trillion won, its second-highest quarterly operating profit.

Analysts are now predicting that Samsung is going to post 58.2 trillion won in sales for Q2 2017 with operating profits being forecast at 12.99 trillion won for the three-month period ending June 2017.

If these estimates are correct, they will represent a 14.3 percent and 59.5 percent gain in sales and operating profit respectively compared to the same period last year. The semiconductor business and impressive sales of the Galaxy S8 are said to drive operating profits for Samsung to new heights in Q2 2017.

Galaxy Note 8 schematics hint at dual speakers

Samsung is going to launch a new Galaxy Note flagship later this year. We know that much for sure, but not much is known about the new flagship itself. There’s a new rumor or leak concerning the device almost every other day and the latest suggests that the Galaxy Note 8 is going to have dual speakers.

Purported schematics of the Galaxy Note 8 have been leaked online which claim to give us a glimpse of what the new flagship is going to look like. The schematics have provision for a bottom-firing and top-firing speaker on the Galaxy Note 8 which should, at least in theory, provide an enhanced audio experience.

The schematics also reiterate previous rumors that the Galaxy Note 8 is going to have a dual camera system on the back. While it was initially believed that this would be the first Samsung smartphone to feature a dual camera system, that title may now rest with the Galaxy C10.

We can also see what appears to be a round fingerprint sensor at the back of the device. Samsung is reportedly going to retain the sensor at the back since the in-screen fingerprint sensor may not be ready in time for the Galaxy Note 8.

None of this has been officially confirmed as yet so it goes without saying that you should take it with a healthy dose of salt.

Galaxy A3 (2016) Nougat update released

It appears that Samsung is now rolling out the much-awaited Android 7.0 Nougat update to the cheapest model in its Galaxy A series. The company has reportedly started rolling out Android 7.0 Nougat for the Galaxy A3 (2016) in Europe.

Not like this wasn’t expected. We saw evidence of the Nougat update being developed for the Galaxy A3 (2016) just a few weeks ago which suggested that it may not be long before this update is finally released for the handset.

The first reports of this handset receiving said update came in from Hungary so it’s quite likely that this update will soon be released in other markets across Europe. Firmware version A310FXXU3CQE6 is now being rolled out for this handset in Hungary.

Since this is an over-the-air firmware update, it’s obviously going to take some time before the update is available for all users. It’s unclear at this point in time how long it will take for the update to be released in additional markets.

The firmware update weighs in at just under 1GB and brings all of the features that you have come to expect from the Nougat update, including but not limited to the Multi-Window mode, improved Doze mode and notifications shade, user interface tweaks and more.

Galaxy Note FE to be available in the same colors as the Galaxy Note 7

The upcoming Galaxy Note FE will be available in the same colors — Black Onyx, Blue Coral, Gold Platinum and Silver Titanium — as its predecessor, the Galaxy Note 7, reveals a new report published by Korean outlet iNews24.

The color scheme won’t be the only similarity between the Galaxy Note FE and the Galaxy Note 7, either. The handset is also expected to sport the same design, with the main difference being a big ‘R’ symbol on the back to indicate that it’s a refurbished unit.

With that in mind, it’s safe to assume that the Galaxy Note FE will house almost identical internals to the Galaxy Note 7, meaning it should have a 5.7-inch display, an Exynos 8890 CPU and 4GB of RAM, though it’s said to pack a smaller 3,200mAh battery.

“The Galaxy Note FE is expected to be released to the market” at the beginning of July, “but volume may vary greatly depending on the supply,” reveals an anonymous industry source in a statement issued to iNews24 on Friday, June 9.

Out of the three-to-four million Galaxy Note 7 units recalled, it’s believed that a mere 300,000 will go on sale in South Korea, with each reportedly carrying a relatively hefty price tag of 732,000 won ($650).

Samsung now rolling out Nougat update for the Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 in the US

Following in the footsteps of T-Mobile and Verizon, Samsung has started rolling out the much-anticipated Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Wi-Fi variant of the 8-inch Galaxy Tab S2 (SM-T713) in the United States.

The upgrade itself weighs in at a little over 1.2GB and transports all of the changes you’d expect to find bundled into Nougat, including additional battery saving features, enhanced notifications and improved app permissions.

Unfortunately, it’s unclear whether the firm is planning to distribute a similar update for the 9.7-inch model of the Galaxy Tab S2 (SM-T813), but we’re guessing it is, seeing as both of the devices hit the shelves in the region at the same time.

For those in need of a refresher, the Galaxy Tab S2, which was released back in September, 2015, sports an Exynos 5433/Snapdragon 652 CPU, 3GB of RAM, 32/64GB of internal storage, an 8MP rear-facing camera and a 4,000mAh non-removable battery.

To see if the OTA is ready for your device, head into Settings » About Device » Download Updates Manually. Alternatively, you can wait until you receive an alert instructing you to download the update, though that typically takes a little longer to arrive.
