Samsung Pay now supports TD Bank

If you own a Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge or a Galaxy Note 5 and hold a TD Bank debit or credit card, we have some great news for you as Samsung has just disclosed that it’s been working closely with the national bank to add support for a bunch of its credit/debit cards to Samsung Pay.

Not all of TD Bank’s cards are supported, which means that you’re going to have to head over to Samsung’s website to see which cards are compatible and which aren’t. If yours isn’t there though, don’t be too alarmed because the firm is continuously adding new cards to its lineup all the time.

Samsung improves Soundcamp with better tools for digital music creators

Samsung introduced Soundcamp last year. The app allows users to make digital music right on their Samsung smartphone. The company today released an update which brings several new features to this Digital Audio Workstation and Musical Instrument Digital Interface sequencer application. The latest version brings a new launcher design and better tools that help music creators improve their skills and produce creative tracks. The app opens into what looks like a real-life rehearsal room with basic, preset musical instruments scattered on the floor that users can access and play with a tap.

Users can also connect to and record using various third-party music apps located on the shelf above the instruments. An upgraded guitar and bass have been added to the instruments, users can play the guitar either in Chords mode by strumming the strings on-screen like they would play a normal guitar or in Notes mode by selecting notes on a guitar fretboard. Basic strumming techniques like string muting, hammer-ons, string bending, pull-offs and more can also be performed. Both electric and acoustic timbres are available and others can be downloaded. The Looper feature, which lets users play live by manipulating elements of sample loops, has also be improved to help users easily produce the sound they want. All this and much more is available in the updated Samsung Soundcamp app that’s now available for download via Galaxy Apps and the Google Play Store.

Samsung leads the small and medium display market with the help of its AMOLED panels

Samsung led the small and medium display market last year according to a new report from market research firm IHS. The company’s dominant market share can be attributed to its Super AMOLED displays that are being used in smartphones, tablets, and even laptops.

According to the latest numbers from IHS, Samsung Display had a market share of 23 percent in the small and medium-sized display market (9 inches and below). Samsung was followed by Japan Display (16%), LG (14%), Sharp (10%), and Innolux (5%). The shipments of AMOLED panels were increased by a whopping 54 percent in 2015 when compared to a year earlier.

The company has supplied its Super AMOLED display panels to a lot of Chinese smartphones brands including Huawei due to good quality and better colors. It has been reported that Apple recently ordered 100 million AMOLED panels from Samsung for its next iPhone, which is certainly a good sign for the South Korean firm.

It is being predicted that Samsung’s market share in the small and medium-sized display market might have increased due to the company’s recently released flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. Japan Display and Sharp have announced that they would invest in mass production of AMOLED displays by 2018.

Samsung starts firmware development for the Galaxy C5 (SM-C5000)

The Galaxy C5 is expected to make a debut sometime next month as the first device in Samsung’s new Galaxy C lineup. We have seen some of the phone’s specs leak online, and our sources tell us that Samsung has now started development of the C5′s software. This means that the device’s hardware is now final and isn’t expected to change before the official launch.

There’s no software development for the Galaxy C7 yet, so the C5 will either be launching first or Samsung will be delaying the debut of the Galaxy C lineup to June or later this year so it can bring both devices to market at the same time. The Galaxy C series should feature a slim metallic design, and the Galaxy C5 should come with a 5.2-inch Full HD display, a Snapdragon 617 SoC, 4GB of RAM, and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. China is set to be the first launch market, and it could possibly be the sole country where the Galaxy C handsets will be available.

Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3 Value Edition on sale, runs Android 6.0

It seems Samsung has quietly launched a Value Edition variant of the Galaxy Xcover 3, the company’s affordable rugged and water-resistant smartphone. The Value Edition runs Android 6.0 out of the box instead of the ancient Android 4.4 KitKat that the original Xcover 3 launched with, but on the hardware front, the newer model offers no upgrades.

The hardware includes a 4.5-inch WVGA display, a quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 8GB of storage, 1.5GB of RAM, a 5-megapixel rear camera, and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. 4G connectivity is onboard, and under the hood resides a 2,000 mAh battery. The Xcover 3 Value Edition has IP67 and MIL-STD 810GB certification, which means it is resistant to water and can take a few hard drops to the floor without breaking a sweat.

The Galaxy Xcover 3 Value Edition is available for purchase in the Netherlands for €228. There’s no telling if the device will be offered in other markets, though even if it is already available elsewhere, Samsung probably won’t be making an official announcement.

Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Spigen Thin Fit Case review

In the world of smartphone accessories, Spigen needs no introduction. Spigen has long been a popular choice for smartphone cases, with the company offering multiple choices for every device. From thick armor cases to slimmer options, Spigen makes them all. For the Galaxy S7 edge, Spigen has more than 10 different cases available, and we decided to take the Spigen Thin Fit case for a spin.

Unlike regular cases, the Thin Fit case only just manages to cover all the important parts of the device. It’s not 100 percent coverage – the volume and power buttons aren’t covered by the case, and you also have cutouts at each of the phone’s four corners. Right off the bat, this suggests the case isn’t made to offer the same level of protection that regular cases provide, especially the armor versions.

But that’s exactly the point of the Thin Fit case – protect your device against bumps and scratches, but also look and feel good in the process. To achieve the latter, the protection aspect has to be dialed back a bit. What does it mean? Well, the case might not be extremely useful if you drop your Galaxy S7 edge, but regular bumps and scratches should steer clear of your phone. Ergonomics also get improved – the back is made of high-quality soft-touch plastic that sticks to your hand and feels great.

spigen-thin-fint-review-2

Naturally, it’s not the same as the feel of the phone’s glass back, but if that was your main concern you probably wouldn’t be putting your S7 edge in a case in the first place. The thin nature of the case also means that inserting cables into the device and taking them out is never a problem, and you don’t really need to make any extra space inside your pockets.

I personally feel the Thin Fit case from Spigen is how cases should be – slim and nice to the touch without leaving your device vulnerable to damage. The only bad thing about this case is the presence of the words “AUTO FOCUS” below the camera cutout. It’s totally unnecessary and mars what is otherwise an attractive design.

For those that want more protection, there are other cases that fit the bill – the Evutec SI Lite case is one such option, and we will be reviewing more of them in the coming days. For now, head over to Mobile Fun if the Spigen Thin Fit case catches your fancy. It’s priced at $18.99 and can be purchased in black, mint and gunmetal colors.

T-Mobile’s Galaxy Note 5 gets Android 6.0 Marshmallow update

T-Mobile has started rolling out the Marshmallow update to the Galaxy Note 5, becoming the third major carrier in the US to do so (leaving AT&T as the bad guy). Available over the air, the update is a 1421.63 MB download and should bring you all the goodies and features of Android 6.0 that other Note 5 users have been enjoying for a couple of weeks. An enhanced interface, Google Now on Tap, a new app permissions system, and faster performance are a part of the package.

According to the changelog, the update will also delete the Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp “functions”. Your device won’t delete the apps as long as you are on the latest versions, as the removal will only affect the presence of these apps as preloaded apps on the system storage. For a better look at Marshmallow on the Note 5, check out this post. A trip into the Settings » About device » Software update menu should let you make the update show up on your device if it hasn’t already, though some might have to wait for a couple of a days before Marshmallow arrives on their Note 5.

[Poll] Did you switch to a Galaxy S7 or S7 edge from an iPhone?

If there’s one battle that neither Apple nor Samsung can claim to win, it’s keeping its consumers interested in its products and from opting for devices from the competition. While Apple can boast of having more iPhone users that have jumped ship from a Samsung handset, Samsung has a large number of customers that have left the Cupertino’s company walled garden behind. When it comes to the Samsung camp, the Galaxy S flagships are the most popular and the largest draw for mobile users.

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge have proven to be quite popular, and it has gotten us thinking just how many of those who bought either of Samsung’s flagships switched from an iPhone. Most of our readers are likely to be Samsung diehards who wouldn’t dream of using an iPhone, but at the same time, there have to be quite a few folks that are now using an S7 or S7 edge after leaving the fruit device behind.

If you are one of those who fit into that category, let us know through our poll! Also, tell us what you think about your Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge, and exactly why you made the jump in the comments section. Unable to decide if Samsung’s new flagships are right for you? Check our Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge reviews here and here for the answer!
