Big Galaxy S10 update brings improved camera Night mode and more!

If you thought Samsung was sitting idle while people complained about the not-so-impressive Night mode on the Galaxy S10 camera, the latest update for the device is here to prove you wrong. The May security update for the Galaxy S10 trio improves the current Night mode and also adds a couple of new camera functionality, which we were able to test ahead of the update’s public release.

Night mode now works with ultra-wide camera, takes cleaner photos

Having the option to use Night mode with the ultra-wide camera is perhaps the most useful addition with the new update. The ultra-wide camera has a narrower aperture (F2.2) than the primary camera (F1.5), so it’s unable to capture as much light by default and has higher noise. Night mode shots with the ultra-wide lens still have plenty of noise, but you get brighter and slightly more detailed shots that were not possible before.

Below are two scenes captured with the ultra-wide camera in automatic mode (swipe right) and in Night mode (swipe left). The second one was taken in a completely dark room with only the small candle as the source of light.

Night mode in general has been improved as well. There’s lower noise in Night mode photos. The phone now keeps the shutter open longer than it did previously, although that also introduces blur in pictures taken in very tough low-light conditions unless you hold the phone really, really steady. In regular low-light scenes, however, the final scene is noticeably cleaner in some situations.

In other situations, the reduction in noise isn’t that noticeable, not unless you’re looking at the pictures on a monitor. As for detail, there’s no visible difference in most cases. The higher noise reduction can actually make things a bit softer now, although it’s a fair trade-off overall.

Here’s a scene captured with both the new Night mode (swipe left) and the old version (swipe right) where you can notice the difference in noise reduction:

And here’s one where the difference is slightly less noticeable:

And finally, here are a couple of scenes captured in automatic mode (swipe right) and the new Night mode (swipe left) on an S10+ running the new software:

Live Focus can be taken with telephoto lens on S10 and S10+

The other big addition is that Live Focus photos can now be taken using either the ultra-wide lens or the telephoto lens on the S10 and S10+, a feature that was present on the Galaxy S10 5G out of the box. We liked that Live Focus mode on the Galaxy S10 trio used the ultra-wide lens for background blur, as that allows you to more easily take bokeh shots of large objects and makes Live Focus possible on the Galaxy S10e. And now, if you own a Galaxy S10 or S10+, you have the choice to get up close to subjects without physically moving when you’re taking bokeh pictures.

It’s great to see Samsung making such major camera improvements to its latest flagship, even if it’s not ultimately surprising: Since last year, Samsung has been bringing new camera features–like Super Slow-mo video recording–from its flagships to older and cheaper devices. The new Galaxy S10 update should make the overall imaging experience better for those who regularly take a lot of pictures in low-light conditions and those who like the artistic results Live Focus can produce.

When can I get this update?

The update, which includes the May 2019 security patch, is rolling out to all three Galaxy S10 models in Switzerland. You should be able to download it over the air from the Settings » Software update menu on your phone. The update’s availability will expand to more markets in the coming days, so if you don’t get it right away, check for the update at a later time. Galaxy S10 owners in the US might have to wait considerably longer for this update, considering carriers in the country are yet to bring even the first version of the dedicated Night mode to their customers.

Samsung brings new wireless charging accessories to India

Samsung India has launched two new wireless charging accessories – Samsung Wireless Power Bank and Wireless Charging Duo Pad – in the country. Both of them are Qi certified and work with a wide range of Samsung and non-Samsung devices that support the Qi wireless charging standard. On the Samsung side, they work with Galaxy smartphones and wearables with support for wireless charging.

As the name suggests, the Samsung Wireless Power Bank is a power bank with a built-in wireless charging pad. It comes in a slim aluminum body and packs a 10,000mAh battery inside. It can charge two devices – one wireless and one wired – at once and supports Adaptive Fast Charging and Quick Charge 2.0 for both.

The Wireless Charger Duo Pad is an older accessory that made its global debut last year but is coming to India just now. As evident from the pictures, it’s a wireless charging pad that can charge two devices at once. It is ideal for customers who use wearables along with their smartphones as both of them can be charged wirelessly at once. It supports Fast Charge 2.0 and works with any Qi-certified device.

The Samsung Wireless Power Bank is priced at INR 3,699 (~$50) and comes in silver and pink color options. The Wireless Charger Duo Pad, on the other hand, carries a price tag of INR 5,999 (~$85) and is available in black and white colors choices. They are available for purchase across all leading retail stores, Samsung e-Shop and will soon be available on Amazon and Flipkart as well.

Galaxy S10 5G is coming to Australia next week

Along with the Galaxy S10e, S10, and S10+, Samsung also launched the Galaxy S10 5G at the Unpacked event in February. However, unlike the rest of the lineup, the latter model didn’t go on sale immediately. As 5G networks continue to go live in select parts of the world, Samsung is now launching the Galaxy S10 5G in these markets.

After launching the S10 5G in the US last week, Samsung is bringing it to Australia next. The flagship device will be available for purchase in the country starting May 28 through Telstra and Samsung Experience Stores. When available for purchase, it will be the first 5G-enabled device to launch in the country.

Telstra customers will get a free upgrade to the Galaxy S10 5G

Telstra customers will get a free upgrade to the Galaxy S10 5G as promised if they purchased their S10+ during the offer period earlier this year. They will have 21 days from May 28 to get the free upgrade. It’s a sweet deal for customers as the S10 5G not only supports next-generation networks but also sports more powerful internals than the Galaxy S10+.

It’s worth noting that Telstra will be rolling out 5G in select high-traffic areas initially before deploying it more widely. So, if you are planning to buy the Galaxy S10 5G, it is worth checking if Telstra is bringing its 5G network to your area anytime soon. The Australian carrier plans to announce 5G mobile plans closer to the launch date. Given that 5G networks are still in nascent stages, the benefits may not be immediately apparent but that will change as these networks become more common.

“The Galaxy S10 5G is designed to perform at a level that we have never before seen in a Samsung device. From its 3D Depth Camera to 5G network capability, we’re delivering the ultimate in terms of innovation, design, and experience,” said Garry McGregor, Vice President of IT and Mobile, Samsung Australia, commenting on the launch.

Possible new Galaxy Xcover 5 spotted on Wi-Fi Alliance with Android Pie

A new Samsung device that may possibly be the next smartphone in the company’s Galaxy Xcover lineup has been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance with Android Pie on board. The device carries model number SM-G398F, which suggests it could be the Galaxy Xcover 5 as the Xcover 4’s model number was SM-G389F. The Galaxy Xcover 5 was listed on Samsung New Zealand’s website temporarily last year but failed to make an official appearance, and Samsung could finally be looking to change that.

A possible live image of the Xcover 5 was tweeted out by WinFuture.de’s Roland Quandt last year, showing a single rear camera with three LED flashes laid out in a vertical fashion on the right side. It was never confirmed if that device was actually the Galaxy Xcover 4 successor, but with dual camera setups so popular and in demand even on budget phones these days, it’s possible Samsung delayed the Xcover 5’s launch to make its camera hardware more compelling.

As for the rest of the hardware, we only know what chipset will power the device and how much RAM it will have. Listings for the Samsung SM-G398FN on Geekbench reveal an Exynos 7885 and 3GB of RAM under the hood, putting it in the same league as new budget phones like the Galaxy M20. As with all Xcover devices, the Xcover 5 should be water resistant with IP68 certification and have military-grade ruggedness, and we’ll hopefully see more information showing up in the coming weeks to give us a better picture of what the device is about.

Samsung’s PENUP app updated with One UI interface

Samsung has updated its PENUP app with the One UI design language. Ever since Samsung’s One UI skin debuted with Android Pie, the company has been busy updating its proprietary apps with a One UI look and feel, and PENUP is the latest one to be getting the makeover. A dark interface isn’t part of the update, though, so the PENUP UI won’t change when you enable Night mode on your phone.

One UI look and feel for yet another proprietary Samsung app

The update also adds an ‘Auto Stop’ function to the Live Drawing feature. Live Drawing runs a video of an existing picture being drawn live on the screen and lets you trace along to help you learn how to draw, and before the new update, one had to manually press the pause button when following a live drawing. Now, the live drawing will pause automatically any time you tap the color or tool selection options, removing one step (pressing the pause button) from the process.

You can download the new version of PENUP (3.2.00.14) from the Galaxy Store or the Google Play Store. Alternatively, you can update by downloading the APK from our APK section and sideloading it on your device.

Unseen Black Pink dance practice promotes Samsung’s new Galaxy A80

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A80 in Bangkok last month. It brought Kpop super group Black Pink to not only highlight some features of the handset but also perform a couple of their songs at the launch event. As you can probably imagine, the room went wild when they performed.

Samsung’s marketing push for the new Galaxy A80 continues with Black Pink. It has put up a video of an unseen Black Pink dance performance to highlight the camera features of the new device.

Black Pink dance video highlights the Galaxy A80 camera

The Galaxy A80 is Samsung’s first smartphone with a sliding and rotating camera mechanism. The 48-megapixel primary and 8 megapixel ultra-wide camera slides up and rotates on command so there’s no need for separate front and back cameras. This also allows for a no-notch and no-hole 6.7-inch FHD+ resolution “New Infinity Display.”

As we mentioned in our Galaxy A80 hands-on, it’s actually a very beautiful device with the camera module only adding to its charm. It also provides decent performance with the Snapdragon 730 chipset and 8GB of RAM. The Galaxy A80 gets a 3,700mAh battery with 25W super fast charger but it ditches the headphone jack and the microSD card slot.

The camera is obviously the star of the show here. The rotating mechanism means that your selfies will be of the same quality as the photos taken from the primary camera on a conventional device. At 48-megapixel, it also boasts the highest megapixel count of any Samsung device.

Black Pink takes full advantage of the camera in this ad, showing off their new dance moves on Instagram Live which quickly go viral across the globe. Given the sheer number of fans that this Kpop group has, whatever they perform is bound to go viral without question. You can check out their new dance moves in the video below.
