Galaxy S10+ dual front cams don’t offer substantially better portrait selfies

It seems the second front camera on the Galaxy S10+ doesn’t make for substantially better portrait selfies compared to the Galaxy S10e (or the Galaxy S10, which also has a single front camera). I took the S10e and S10+ out to test Live Focus selfies to see if the dual camera setup offers any advantage over the single front camera and found that there isn’t enough of a difference.

I already had an inkling that the Galaxy S10e would take good Live Focus selfies in bright daylight, so my main motive was to see if the dedicated second camera on the S10+ makes a difference in low-light conditions. It doesn’t, with only slightly deeper blurring on the S10+ and fewer artefacts at the edges of my head. And the artefacts aren’t really that easy to spot on the phone’s display and can only be noticed on a monitor. Also, the S10+ seems to blur out the edges of my shoulder while the S10e makes a proper distinction.

Dual front cameras not necessary for good Live Focus portrait selfies

Perhaps the S10+ is deliberately doing so in order to make the subject fade more naturally into the blurred background, but the point I want to make is that the software-based Live Focus mode on the Galaxy S10e (or the Galaxy S10) is as good as the S10+’ for most intents and purposes. And while most people aren’t going to be torn between the Galaxy S10e and Galaxy S10+, this is good reason to opt for the S10 instead of the S10+ if you’re only leaning towards the latter for those dual selfie shooters and aren’t worried about battery or screen size.

I’ll have more to talk about in our Galaxy S10e review and more samples to compare the S10e and S10+ front cameras, but for now, I’ve put up two selfies below (swipe left for the S10+ photo and swipe right for the S10e photo). Check them out and let me know which one you like better and whether this changes anything in your possible purchase of any of the three Galaxy S10 variants.

Get 4 months of YouTube Premium free with the Galaxy S10

With Spotify expanding its partnership with Samsung to have the app pre-installed on the Galaxy S10 and other new devices, Google is coming out with a promotion of its own. Google is offering Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ owners four months of YouTube Premium for free. It costs $11.99 per month.

It’s a paid tier of the streaming service which provides ad-free videos, background playback, offline downloads and more. It also includes access to the music streaming service YouTube Music which is obviously competing against the incumbent Spotify.

Google offering 4 months of YouTube Premium free for Galaxy S10

Spotify’s latest promotion offers Galaxy S10 owners six months of the Premium tier for free. However, it’s only limited to users in the United States. The YouTube Premium promotion is available to Galaxy S10 owners in more than two dozen countries. With YouTube Music, subscribers get access to millions of official songs, live performances, music videos, and more ad-free, offline and in the background when they’re on Premium.

Google also points out that YouTube videos and the platform’s original content will look even better on the Galaxy S10. That’s because they have the world’s first HDR10+ certified Dynamic AMOLED display. All videos are ad-free when subscribed to this tier. With background play, a video will continue to play even if the app is minimized or the screen is turned off. Offline video downloads allow users to save content for viewing when they’re without an internet connection.

This promotion is available only to those who are not currently subscribed to YouTube Premium, YouTube Music Premium or Google Play Music, have not been a subscriber before and have not even participated in a free trial before. Once the trial period ends, they will be automatically charged the standard subscription price. That’s unless the subscription is canceled before the trial is up. This offer can be redeemed by March 31, 2020.

YouTube Premium will also be available free for four months to Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Tab S5e owners when these devices go on sale. Google is also offering a similar promotion to all other Samsung Galaxy device owners. Simply activate a device between February 20, 2019 and February 29, 2020 and get YouTube Premium free for two months. The list of supported countries for both offers is available on Google’s blog.

Galaxy S10 and other new phones to come with Spotify pre-installed

A long-term partnership between Samsung and Spotify was announced at the Galaxy Note 9 event last year. Spotify was selected as Samsung’s go-to music service across all its devices. This partnership is now being extended.

The Galaxy S10 series and other upcoming devices from Samsung will come with Spotify pre-installed. Spotify is also offering six months of its Premium subscription for free to customers of select Samsung devices. However, there are quite a few caveats for this promotion.

Spotify will be pre-installed on new Samsung devices

The Spotify app will now be pre-installed on millions of new Samsung devices globally. This includes the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S10 5G. The new Galaxy A series and even the Galaxy Fold will come with the music streaming app pre-installed.

Eligible customers with a new Galaxy S10 handset will get six months of Spotify Premium for free. One caveat is that this promotion is only for customers in the United States. Furthermore, if you were previously a Premium subscriber, still are or have even used a free trial of the service, you can’t get six months for free.

The terms and conditions mention that this six-month trial offer is “available for a limited period only.” So if you meet the conditions then it would be best to sign up for this quickly. Do keep in mind that once the trial period ends, you will automatically be charged the then-current monthly price of Spotify Premium. You will have to manually cancel prior to the end of the free trial if you don’t want that to happen.
