Samsung’s Oscars 2017 ad delivers a powerful message on behalf of YouTubers

Samsung has been spending a lot of money to advertise its products at the Oscars over the past few years. It has also been working with filmmaker Casey Neistat who happens to be one of the most popular YouTube content creator. The angle here appears to be an effort to make Samsung feel more relevant to the younger generation and this Oscars ad is just part of that effort.

Neistat played a big role in Samsung’s Oscars presence last year. He walked the red carpet with a prototype of the Gear 360 to show the world what Samsung’s handheld VR camera is capable of. He was supposed to do a stunt as well but that was reportedly canceled.

Samsung’s Oscars 2017 ad is a simple one minute spot which features Neistat in a tux as he narrates “the rest of us,” to highlight the fact that most YouTubers don’t have fancy camera equipment or big production budgets but they create video content anyway because they want to share their ideas. You’ll find plenty of shots of Samsung products like the Galaxy S7 edge and the Gear 360 because this is an ad after all but it does a nice job of getting the message across.

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus hands-on video leaked

We’ve seen a lot of leaked pictures and renders of the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus over the past few weeks but it appears that a hands-on video of the two flagship smartphones has now been leaked online. The video seems to have been leaked by someone based in China and it shows us both the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus.

It’s a short video so it doesn’t actually provide a walkthrough of the device’s features but we do get to see the Always On Display of the Galaxy S8 Plus and the home screen of the Galaxy S8. The soft keys that have replaced the physical home button are visible as well.

The video doesn’t reveal anything new as far as the design of these handsets is concerned. Both have a dual-edge curved display with minimal bezels and no physical home button with the fingerprint sensor being repositioned at the back.

It goes without saying that we will continue to see more leaks related to the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus in the days leading up to the official launch. Samsung confirmed yesterday that it’s going to launch the Galaxy S8 on March 29 at an event in New York City and London.

Galaxy Book to showcase Adobe Photoshop and S Pen integration, detect S Pen settings

The Galaxy Book is a tablet PC productivity device that is designed to help users produce their best work, so it’s no surprise to see Samsung collaborate with partners regarding the device’s software. To this end, Samsung has worked with Adobe to bring its Adobe Photoshop support to what is one of Samsung’s most premiere devices.

Adobe Photoshop will work with the S Pen, and the Galaxy Book is good at detecting S Pen settings so that it “knows” what type of stroke you’re creating on-screen. Sensitivity and tilting are supported in both Adobe Photoshop and Autodesk. This intuitive experience will allow you to draw as easily on the Galaxy Book as you would on paper. Of course, the 4096 pressure levels due to the use of a Wacom digitizer ensures that your doodling will prove reminiscent of the Galaxy Note S Pen experience.

Autodesk Sketchbook integation is also here, a software program that, as the name suggests, lets you draw and doodle to your heart’s content. These programs will meet the artist in you and will prove particularly useful for those whose productivity involves creativity and provide a Microsoft Surface Pro alternative for consideration.

To find out more about the Galaxy Book and its smart S Pen and how it’ll work with Samsung’s pre-installed software, check out our Galaxy Book hands-on post, specs comparison,  as well as Samsung’s own showcase videos, then let us know if you plan on picking up this new productivity beast in our very own voting poll.

Samsung to bundle AKG earphones in the box of the Galaxy S8

During its MWC 2017 event, Samsung announced that it’ll be bundling a pair of AKG earphones in the box of its next flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8. This news came shortly after the firm revealed that it will be bringing AKG-tuned audio to future Galaxy smartphones.

For those unaware, Samsung recently acquired Harman International Industries for an estimated $112 per share, and seeing as AKG falls under its umbrella, it has the resources required to integrate the audio specialist’s technology into its devices and offer its products as accessories.

[Update: Another teaser] Galaxy S8 launch date officially confirmed, Samsung offers a glimpse

There has been a lot of speculation about the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus over the past few weeks. The new flagship was expected to be unveiled at MWC 2017 like its predecessors but Samsung confirmed not too long ago that it wasn’t going to launch the Galaxy S8 in Barcelona this year. This has led to rumors about the new flagship’s launch date but Samsung did say a couple of weeks back that it would confirm the Galaxy S8 launch date at MWC 2017. It has followed through on that promise.

Samsung has confirmed today that the Galaxy S8 launch date is March 29 and that the special event for its new flagship is going to take place in New York City and London. As expected, Samsung also offered a glimpse of the Galaxy S8 at its MWC 2017 press conference today to get us all excited about the flagship.

The short teaser basically takes us through the history of the cellphone starting from the 1980s which had those really big cellphones with antennas to the flip phone era of the 1990s leading up to 2017 which Samsung subtly suggests will be led by the Galaxy S8. The teaser does confirm our suspicions that the Galaxy S8 will have an impressive display-to-body ratio and no physical home button.

Mark your calendars for March 29 because that’s when Samsung is going to officially launch the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus. It goes without saying that we will continue to see leaks and rumors in the days leading up to the launch event.

Update: Here’s a longer, more revealing teaser for the Galaxy S8.

Greenpeace may just have called on Samsung to release refurbished Galaxy Note 7

It was recently reported that Samsung was thinking about releasing refurbished Galaxy Note 7 in emerging markets like India and Vietnam. Even though a spokesperson for Samsung India denied the claim, the rumor mill appears to be convinced that Samsung is going to follow through with this and release a slightly modified version of the Galaxy Note 7 with a smaller battery.

Samsung’s MWC 2017 press conference is currently underway in Barcelona and while the company hasn’t confirmed anything about the refurbished Galaxy Note 7, a protester from Greenpeace unfurled a flag and took a position on the stage’s steps. The flag bears Samsung’s logo, #GalaxyNote7 and a recycle logo with the words “Rethink, Reuse, Recycle.”

He did that as David Lowes, Chief Marketing Office at Samsung Electronics Europe, was making his opening remarks. This forced the executive to acknowledge the protestors presence and ask him to vacate the stage, even going so far as to say “you’ve made your point.”

For those who are unaware, Greenpeace is a non-governmental environmental organization that has offices in more than 40 countries and is focused on fighting for a greener and healthier world. Much has already been written about the possible environmental impact of more than 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7 units collecting dust in Samsung warehouses. It can either destroy those units and tens of millions of components or do as Greenpeace suggests and Rethink, Reuse, Recycle.

Whether or not Samsung will do this remains to be seen, but it’s not the first time a suggestion like this has been sent its way, and it may not be the last.

Future Galaxy smartphones will get AKG audio

Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab S3 today at its press conference, bringing AKG audio for great acoustic sound. This audio experience is a direct result of Samsung’s acquisition of Harman International and AKG falls under its umbrella. Tab S3 users can experience this new audio now, but Samsung intends to bring this feature to all of the “Galaxy,” including its smartphone lineup. Future Galaxy smartphones will come with AKG audio right out of the box. Samsung developed its own custom, in-house chip for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, but AKG audio has been a proven and trusted name in the audio business for over 70 years. Samsung will integrate AKG acoustics and make its own in-house sound even better.

AKG audio stands out because of its distraction-free and distortion-free listening experience. AKG Acoustics, the company purchased by Harman whose technology comes under Samsung’s power from its most recent acquisition, was the best choice for Samsung’s product lineup.

Executive VP and Mobile Marketing and Wearable and Accessory Head Younghee Lee says that the collaboration was done to achieve the ideal audio experience for Samsung customers. “For a totally immersive experience, we wanted the best performance in audio – and we achieved that through this exciting collaboration, giving Galaxy users the ability to fully enjoy enhanced listening experiences across Samsung’s mobile portfolio.”

You can find out more about this new listening experience at the link. To find out more about the Galaxy Tab S3, check out our hands-on experience with Samsung’s next big tablet.

Specs comparison: Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 vs. Galaxy Tab S2

Samsung has unveiled its new high-end tablet offering, the Galaxy Tab S3, at its MWC 2017 event today. Compared to last year’s Galaxy Tab S2, the newer tablet from Samsung brings a brighter display (with HDR) and quad-stereo speakers custom tuned by AKG (Harman), offering an even richer multimedia experience. There’s also an S Pen stylus bundled with the tablet so you jot down notes, draw, or sketch.

Its newer, Android 7.0-powered Grace UX offers a new user interface along with dozens of new software features. To support all these new features, the Galaxy Tab S3 uses a more powerful Snapdragon 820 processor as well as additional memory compared to its predecessor. Even the cameras have received an upgrade. It also comes with a faster USB Type-C port and a slightly larger capacity battery.

Let’s compare the specifications and features of the Galaxy Tab S3 with those of the Galaxy Tab S2 9.7. Detailed specifications can be found in our devices page.

Hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy Book: a new chapter for the ‘tablet PC’

Early last year, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy TabPro S at CES 2016. This 2-in-1 tablet was a premium 12-inch tablet sporting a 6th Gen. Intel Core M processor and running the full version of Microsoft Windows 10. This was the first Windows 10 tablet with a Super AMOLED display on the market, and Samsung’s first Microsoft Surface competitor. It was also the first with LTE Cat 6 support to run Microsoft’s latest desktop operating system.

This year, Samsung is releasing a successor to the Galaxy TabPro S, in the form of the Galaxy Book (which comes in two sizes, 10.6-inch, and 12-inch). While the predecessor was a good introduction for Samsung in this rather specific market, one of the major complaints was the weak keyboard: the keyboard pitch (the distance between the keys) was almost non-existent, and the keyboard stroke (key travel) was also way too little for typing comfortably.

The Samsung Galaxy Book caters to productive on-the-go professionals who are looking for a powerful computing device that isn’t tied to the desktop, that is lightweight and has a versatile form factor, and can easily transform from a tablet into a notebook. We had some to check out the Galaxy Book before Samsung’s MWC event, and you can read ahead for our hands-on experience with the Windows tablet-cum-PC.

Galaxy-Book

The Galaxy Book features the Galaxy design identity and is focused on mobile productivity. It comes with an enhanced S Pen (included in the package) and is 8.9mm thick and 640g heavy for the 10.6-inch variant and 7.4mm and 754g for the 12-inch variant. The front of the device is black (glass), while the back of the device is silver (metal). The 10.6-inch variant has an LCD display with Full HD resolution, while the 12-inch version gets a Super AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2160×1440 pixel. Naturally, the latter is more attractive, as far as a great viewing experience is concerned.

SAMSUNG CSC

Galaxy-Book Galaxy-Book Galaxy-Book Galaxy-Book Galaxy-Book Galaxy-Book

The enhanced S Pen is highly pressure sensitive (4096 levels) and is the first pen on Windows to support tilting, useful in programs likeAutodesk Sketchbook and Adobe Photoshop. It works without a battery and the 0.7mm pen tip isn’t made of plastic, but a special type of rubber to mimic the feeling of a real pen.

The 10.6-inch model is powered by a 7th Gen. Intel Core M3 processor, which is a dual-core 2.6GHz processor, and is equipped with 4GB of RAM memory. Depending on which version you would get, it would get either 64GB or 128GB built-in eMMC storage. The 12-inch model is more powerful here. It is powered by a 7th Gen. Intel Core i5 (Kaby Lake) processor, which is a dual-core 3.1GHz processor, and is equipped with 4GB RAM memory for the 128GB SSD storage model or 8GB of RAM memory for the 256GB SSD version. Both versions run the full version of Microsoft Windows 10 and come with expandable storage via a microSD card slot, which supports a maximum microSD card size of 256GB.

Galaxy-Book

The Galaxy Book comes with an included keyboard cover, either in black or white. This keyboard cover is connected via the magnetic connector on the bottom side of the device. This connector provides both connectivity (so no Bluetooth or NFC) and power (so no charging needed for the keyboard). The keyboard has 1.5mm stroke (key travel), which is a huge improvement over previous tablet keyboards and also the keyboard pitch (distance between the keys) has been enlarged to make the typing experience a lot more pleasant.

As expected, the Galaxy Book is packed to the brim with important connectivity features. There’s Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 4.1, LTE, and GPS. The 30.4 and 39.04W batteries provide 10 and 15 hours of battery life respectively, with support for fast charging over the USB Type-C ports. Speaking of Type-C ports, there are two on each model, so you can connect external displays and other accessories.

The Galaxy Book can be easily considered a new chapter for the 2-in-1 PC market. Neither version comes with an iris scanner or fingerprint sensor, which we think is a missed opportunity, especially since the Book is focused on the enterprise. It can be made up for by support for Samsung Flow, which lets you authenticate on the PC using the paired smartphone’s iris or fingerprint sensor, but it’s not exactly a great solution.

The 10.6-inch model also has a rather weak processor (it’s newer than the one on the TabPro S, but still comparable in most ways) and the TFT screen is a letdown. While these might be better for battery life, it would be a better idea to buy the Galaxy Tab S3 instead, at least if entertainment is your main concern. The 10.6-inch model is a reasonable entry in the 2-in-1 Windows tablet market, but it isn’t waterproof (a feature Samsung really should bring forward to its tablet lineup) and the keyboard is almost identical to the one for the Tab S3, so it all comes down to what you would use it for.

Galaxy-Book

The 12-inch Galaxy Book has a more decent processor, but Samsung is limiting its appeal by not offering an option with a Core i7 processor for higher performance. A Core i3 model would also be a nice addition for those who prefer battery life over out-and-out performance, even though the Core i5 offers a balance between performance and efficiency. Oh, and 512GB of storage and 16GB of RAM on one of the models would have sweetened the deal further, given the tablet is targeted at professional users.

Despite the oversights, we think Samsung has done a good job with the successor to the Galaxy TabPro S. The 12-inch model is the true successor here thanks to its AMOLED display. The keyboard improvements and S Pen do make both models of the Galaxy Book attractive options, however. As a competitor to the Microsoft Surface, the Galaxy Book certainly stands out, and it would be great to see how it does in the market once it goes on sale.

What’s your take on the Galaxy Book? Impressed by what you see, or do you think Samsung could have done more? Let us know your opinion in the comments, and by leaving a vote in this poll!

New Samsung Gear VR comes with a wireless controller

Apart from the Galaxy Tab S3 and the Galaxy Book, Samsung also unveiled a new Gear VR today. The company’s new virtual reality headset now comes with a wireless controller that has been designed in collaboration with Oculus. The controller offers consumers more convenience while using the Gear VR. Since the new Gear VR with Controller supports both micro USB and USB Type-C ports, it is compatible with the Galaxy S7, S7 edge, Note 5, S6, S6 edge, and S6 edge+.

Samsung claims that the new Gear VR offers “convenient one-hand control and better motion interaction with minimized movement.” The wireless controller has a clickable touchpad, navigation buttons, volume keys, and a trigger button. The touchpad makes it easier to navigate through the UI and interact with VR apps and games. It supports various forms of motion such as pointing, dragging and dropping, tilting, shooting, and more. The trigger will be quite useful while playing VR games.

The controller’s wire strap will make sure that the controller stays in your hand even during the most active and exciting gaming movements, thanks to the secure grip it offers. It is powered by a AAA battery (1000 mAh) that can last up to 40 days if you use it daily for 2 hours on an average. Similar to previous generation mobile VR headsets from Samsung, the new Gear VR offers 42mm lenses with 101-degree Field of View and distortion correction technology.

The new Gear VR with Controller will be available sometime in Q2 2017 and will be priced at €129.99. The wireless controller can be purchased for €99.99, and it is possible that it would be compatible with older generation Gear VR headsets since it’s the smartphone that powers the Gear VR.

At Samsung, we are focused on setting and exceeding the standard for VR experiences, making them even more accessible and delivering the highest in quality. The Gear VR with Controller expands our VR ecosystem to help consumers get more engaged and immersed in VR content – whether it’s games or videos,” said YH Lee, Executive Vice President of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics.
