Verizon offers Gear S, Tab S deals for Galaxy S6, S6 edge customers

Verizon customers, today is the day. April 1st has come, and, no joking here, the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are available for pre-order.

New information pouring in from Verizon sweetens the deal for those looking for the “six appeal” devices that have won the hearts of tech analysts and consumers alike. From its own blog, Verizon states that there are two “deals” that come with your Galaxy S6 or S6 edge pre-order: first, pre-order customers can get trade-in value for their smartphones, with Galaxy S4 customers getting $150 for a device in excellent condition and Galaxy S5 customers getting $200 for an excellent-condition device.

The trade-in deal may allow you to pick up a new 32GB Galaxy S6 edge for free, particularly if you trade in your GS5 – since the 32GB Galaxy S6 costs $199.99 with Verizon and the $200 will cover the up-front cost (not the activation fee, mind you).

Beyond this, however, there’s another special deal for S6 and S6 edge pre-order customers: customers who order one of Samsung’s newest smartphones can get a Gear S for $150 off. This takes the price of the Gear S ($349.99) down to $199.99 with a two-year agreement, of course. Some may say that $200 is still too much for a smartwatch out-of-pocket, but when you consider its 3G connectivity and the ability to make calls, send texts, and check email on the go is just $5 per month extra, a two-year contract isn’t that terrifying.

Those who don’t prefer a Gear S but certainly want another deal may find the tablet deal tempting. The 10-inch Galaxy Tab 4 can be yours with the purchase of a new GS6 or S6 edge for $99.99, down from the regular $229.99 price, while the Tab S price falls from $499.99 to $249.99. Both of course, come with two-year agreements.

These deals are “limited promotions” by Verizon, so don’t wait too long. And if you’re a little hesitant because you really want a Gold Platinum Galaxy S6 on Big Red’s network, know that the Gold Platinum GS6 was confirmed with Verizon earlier this week.

Galaxy S6, S6 top the list in smartphone performance for Q1 2015

The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge have blown away the competition when it comes to memory performance, but the latest benchmarks from Q1 2015 show that the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are the two top phones to beat for the remainder of 2015.

The latest Antutu benchmarks from Q1 (January-March 2015) show that the GS6 and S6 edge are faster than even the HTC One M9, with Antutu benchmark scores of 67520 (Galaxy S6) and 62,373 (S6 edge), respectively. The HTC One M9 with the Snapdragon 810 posted a score of 52,709. The HTC One M9 is no match for Samsung’s latest, a testimony to just how well the Korean manufacturer has optimized its smartphones.

As has often been said among experienced tech-savvy individuals, anyone can optimize their smartphones and provide blazing-fast speeds, and one company’s win in one year may be its loss the next year as competitors catch up and speed ahead. The speed of HTC One phones that many have used against Samsung in the past is no more. Additionally, a large number of tech reviewers have commended the company for the speed and performance of its devices, and the benchmarks bear this out.

In the GPU department, Samsung’s octa-core, Exynos 7420 processor in both the S6 and the S6 edge outperformed the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor (Qualcomm’s latest). We’ve heard that the Snapdragon 810 has overheating issues, and many tech reviews confirm the same. Some have suggested a fictional Snapdragon 815 processor that Qualcomm says is non-existent, but this strong showing by Samsung means that the chatter about Qualcomm turning to Samsung as a chip supplier may have more merit than just the words of analysts.

All this good news for Samsung isn’t to say that Qualcomm still doesn’t command a large segment of the population when it comes to smartphones bearing its processor chips. The company name is still one worthy of recognition, but these benchmarks make Samsung’s Exynos processor one to be feared in mobile devices going forward. Samsung’s prepping that new top-tier Tizen smartphone contender with each passing day.
