Galaxy Note 8 update released with June 2019 security patch

Samsung has released a new update for the Galaxy Note 8, bringing the June 2019 security patch to the 2017 flagship. The June security update was released for the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy Note 9 earlier this month, but while those devices also received new features for the camera (like a dedicated Night mode), the Note 8 update only includes the latest security enhancements.

Only security enhancements in latest Galaxy Note 8 update

And the Note 8 and the Galaxy S8 probably won’t get the camera Night mode like their successors. That’s because they don’t have the same camera hardware as the Galaxy S10 lineup. Of course, you don’t need specific hardware to have a dedicated Night mode in the camera app, but the Galaxy Note 8 will soon be two years old and the Galaxy S8 already has crossed the two-year mark, so neither device is expected to get any new features, only security updates.

The Note 8 is currently getting the new update – software version N950FXXS6DSF2 – in Iraq, Vietnam, Thailand, Saudi Arabia and Serbia, and we should see more countries joining the party in the coming days. The update should be available over the air from the Software update menu of the phone’s Settings app. Galaxy Note 8 owners can also take the manual route and install the new software by downloading the related firmware from our database.

Samsung Galaxy A10 and A2 Core receive June security patch

Samsung is releasing a new software update, pushing the June 2019 Android security patch, to the Galaxy A10 and Galaxy A2 Core. The rollout is limited to a couple of regions, but it should expand to more countries – and devices – throughout June. For now, the update is launching in India for the Galaxy A10, and in Iraq for the Galaxy A2 Core.

As detailed by Samsung a couple of weeks ago, the June 2019 security patch addresses a variety of high-risk vulnerabilities in the Android OS, alongside one moderate-risk vulnerability. The update patches 11 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) in addition to the issues related to Google’s own software.

There’s also a possibility that this new update sees the return of Telegram to the Galaxy A10. An issue with the file system caused Telegram to become unusable for the Galaxy Ax0 series in May. Compatibility was restored, at least for the Galaxy A30, when it received the June 2019 security patch earlier this month. Several other devices have received the latest security patch over the past couple of weeks. The Samsung Galaxy S9+ made the list, along with the Galaxy Tab S5e and Galaxy Tab Active 2.

Samsung Galaxy A10 and Galaxy A2 Core owners in India and Iraq, respectively, should receive an update notification prior to being able to download the latest software package over-the-air. They can try and download it manually using the Download and install option in the Software update menu of the Settings app. As always, you can also grab the update from our database if you wish to circumvent the OTA process.

Samsung completes work on massive LED display at One Times Square

Samsung Electronics America subsidiary PRISMVIEW recently completed the installation of a gigantic five-screen LED display at the One Times Square building located in New York City. The display assembly, capable of full-motion video and live-streaming, will be used primarily for advertisements in this key high-traffic location. This could mean that Samsung’s very own Galaxy Note 10 might be showcased on the big screens ahead of the phone’s August unveiling that will reportedly take place in the same city.

The LED assembly leverages on Samsung’s XPS 160 and XPS 080 SMART LED Signage technology promising an energy-saving design and advanced color calibration. With an area of over 1,081 square meters, the five-screen setup took three months to be installed and the entire process can be seen in a two-minute time-lapse video shared by Samsung on YouTube.

“New York’s Times Square is not only a high-traffic location, it is a symbolic center of culture and commerce, making it the ideal place to showcase our leading technology on such a colossal scale” said Samsung Electronics’ EVP of Visual Display Business, Seog-gi Kim.

Samsung has historically showcased some of its Galaxy S and Note flagships on the Times Square digital billboards ahead of their release. This could very well be the case with the upcoming Galaxy Note 10 phablets, both of which are likely to feature OLED panels with a larger-than 6.4-inch footprint.

Samsung would kill two birds with one stone by advertising both its LED Signage business and the upcoming mobile devices simultaneously. This LED-ception would be quite reflective of Samsung’s usual business approach to being self-sufficient, even though the massive LED billboard was constructed on behalf of Jamestown, the real estate company managing the 25-story One Times Square building.

Galaxy Note 10 may feature Sound on Display instead of an earpiece

Much has been speculated about the Galaxy Note 10’s display based on protective film leaks out of China over the past few weeks. It’s now being claimed that the Galaxy Note 10 may feature Sound on Display technology instead of a traditional earpiece. The claim is based on one such leaked film which shows slim bezels all around.

The top bezel above the centered camera hole appears to be quite slim. It may be that way because Samsung is now rumored to replace the earpiece with Sound on Display technology. The chin seems to be slimmer than the Galaxy Note 9 as well.

Galaxy Note 10 could adopt Sound on Display

These adjustments would enable Samsung to fit larger displays without having to significantly increase the device’s size. The Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10 Pro are expected to feature 6.3-inch and 6.75-inch displays respectively. Removing the earpiece would certainly allow for the display to be stretched a bit further.

In that case, Samsung would have to rely on its Sound on Display technology. This has been one method of killing the notch that Samsung has been considering. It first showcased its Sound on Display technology at the Samsung OLED Forum in China last year. The company also showed off these OLED panels at CES 2019 in January. Products with this technology were expected to arrive later in the year.

Leakster @UniverseIce claims that the Sound on Display technology will replace the earpiece on the Galaxy Note 10. In that scenario, piezoelectric vibrations transmit the sound to the user’s ear through the display. Samsung has implemented similar technology on one of its new affordable devices. As we pointed out in our Galaxy M40 review, the maximum call volume is very low and calls feel hollow. Samsung could just improve on this front for its flagship phablet.

What would the absence of an earpiece mean for stereo sound? It may adopt the same solution as the LG G8 which already has this technology, or as LG calls it, “Crystal Sound OLED.” The conventional bottom-facing speaker is paired with the piezoelectric speaker for 2-channel stereo sound.

All of this remains unsubstantiated so take this with a grain of salt. There’s always the possibility that the leaked films we have been seeing so far are from a prototype that didn’t make the cut. Such rumors and leaks will continue until the Galaxy Note 10 is unveiled. Samsung is expected to do that on August 7 in New York City.

Samsung executive says the Galaxy Fold is ‘ready to hit the market’

Samsung has still not confirmed when it will launch its first foldable smartphone. The Galaxy Fold was supposed to be released on April 26 in the United States. Samsung had to delay the launch due to some issues with the device that were pointed out by reviewers who had received test units.

The company took all of the test units back and promised to address the issues. Subsequent reports detailed the changes that Samsung made to the Galaxy Fold. A Samsung executive has now said that the Galaxy Fold is “ready to hit the market.”

Galaxy Fold release date still remains a mystery

Samsung Display Vice President Kim Seong-cheol said during this speech at The Korean Information Display Society that “Most of the display problems have been ironed out, and the Galaxy Fold is ready to hit the market.” Samsung Display is the affiliate company that’s providing the foldable displays for this device. Kim also mentioned that he has high expectations for the device. “The Galaxy Fold, when released, will receive a lot of attention in the market,” he added.

His comments bring us no closer to finding out exactly when the Galaxy Fold is going to be launched. There have been so many contradictory reports about when the Galaxy Fold will be out. It was suggested that a media briefing would be held later this month and the device would be released in July. However, a Samsung official cited in a report last week suggested that nothing has been done to prepare for a media event this month.

That’s not to say that Samsung still can’t release the device in July but all of this contradictory information is only adding to the confusion. Hopefully, Samsung will be able to provide a clear roadmap for the Galaxy Fold in the near future.
