Galaxy S10, Note 20, S20 FE and more get January 2021 security update

The January 2021 security patch has been released for a number of Samsung’s Galaxy phones this week. It started with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S20 lineups, and now, the Galaxy S10, Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy S20 FE, and Galaxy Note 10 Lite are also being updated with the latest security fixes.

For those wondering, the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 Lite are not being updated to Android 11 with the new firmware, though we can expect that to change soon considering the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ and the Galaxy S10 Lite have received the Android 11-based One UI 3.0 update in some markets.

For Galaxy Note 20, Note 20 Ultra, and Galaxy S20 FE owners, this should be the second update based on Android 11 in some markets and the first in others. However, those who fall in the former camp shouldn’t expect to see any bug fixes or general improvements, as the January update comes bundled with only security enhancements. The same applies to the new firmware that is rolling out for the Galaxy S10 series and the Galaxy Note 10 Lite.

If you own any of these devices, you can check if the January update is available by opening the phone’s Settings app, navigating to Software update, and selecting Download and install. Alternatively, you can download the latest firmware for your phone and country/carrier from our archives in case you wish to skip the wait for the over-the-air release. As usual, the new updates won’t immediately be available in all countries but will gradually expand over the coming days.

Samsung hasn’t increased charging speeds on the Galaxy A52

Samsung is working on multiple new Galaxy A-series smartphones, including the Galaxy A52 and the Galaxy A72. The Galaxy A52 will be launched in both 4G and 5G variants, and Snapdragon processors will power both variants. The phone’s 5G variant seems to be sticking with the same old battery charging speed as that of its predecessor.

The Galaxy A52 5G recently received the necessary 3C certification in China, revealing its model number and charging speeds. Going by the details available in the 3C database, the Galaxy A52 5G (SM-A5260) will feature 15W fast charging, similar to the Galaxy A51 and the Galaxy A51 5G. The phone might ship with the EP-TA200 charger with 9V/1.67A or 5V/2A charging support. After looking at 25W fast charging on phones like the Galaxy M51, we had hoped that Samsung would bring similar charging speeds to the Galaxy A series in 2021.

Going by previous leaks and reports, the Galaxy A52 4G will come equipped with the Snapdragon 720G chipset and the Galaxy A52 5G will use the Snapdragon 750G processor. The phone could sport a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with Full HD+ resolution, in-display fingerprint reader, Android 11, and up to 8GB RAM. It is expected to feature a quad-camera setup at the rear, featuring a 64MP wide-angle camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, a 5MP macro camera, and a 5MP depth sensor.

Galaxy S21 teaser hints at superzoom, 3D camera – or both

The Galaxy S21 series will be yet another generation of Samsung’s Android flagships largely focused on camera excellence. That would be the main takeaway from the company’s latest promo teasing the smartphone lineup’s mid-January launch. The video that you can see below also seems to hint at either superzoom capabilities, 3D imagery, or both.

As things stand right now, we’re inclined to believe a 3D camera sensor won’t be part of any Galaxy S21 model. After all, that’s what recent reports have been suggesting.

Could Samsung return to 3D imagery with the Galaxy Note 21?

The new teaser, published earlier today, is also yet another reminder that you can’t name a better duo than the Galaxy S family and aquatic advertising.

As for its mobile camera implications, this early ad is in line with what we already know about the Galaxy S21 series and its likely specs sheet. We’re once again expecting the Ultra model to outperform the other two by a significant margin. The Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ are rumored to sport a pair of 12-megapixel sensors sitting behind a wide-angle and ultra-wide lens. Likewise, all three are expected to feature a 64-megapixel telephoto camera.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy S21 Ultra will reportedly utilize a 108-megapixel camera as its primary shooter and two 10-megapixel telephoto cameras offering 3X and either 5X or 10X optical zoom (so, fixed focal length). It’s also expected to feature another 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, a laser autofocusing system, and Dual Pixel autofocus support.

Korean students can get discounts on various Samsung products via Galaxy Campus Store

Samsung is offering great discounts on various products to students in South Korea via its ‘Galaxy Campus Store’ program. The company has announced that it started an online-only shopping store exclusively for students in its home country yesterday.

The Galaxy Campus Store is an online store that only sells IT products such as laptops, mobile accessories, printers, smartphones, tablets, and wearables. Samsung is currently offering a 10-20% discount on 56 products, including the Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Z Flip 5G, Galaxy Watch Active 2, Galaxy Buds Live, Galaxy Book Flex 2, and the Galaxy Book Ion 2. More products will come to the Galaxy Campus Store in the future.

Students in South Korea enrolled in universities and graduate schools are eligible to make purchases from the Galaxy Campus Store. They can sign up using their college or university IDs, and people aged over 29 can submit supporting documents. Moreover, students can only buy a particular product once a year. They can also refer friends and earn points to buy other products or to get additional discounts.

A Samsung Electronics official said, “As the number of students who enjoy learning and self-development, as well as cultural life, on mobile is increasing, we planned the Galaxy Campus Store where they can purchase various Galaxy products more conveniently. Through the program, we plan to become more friendly to college students and enhance customized benefits.
