Samsung says ‘multiple AR and VR products’ are coming soon

Samsung’s Gear lineup of virtual reality headsets has effectively been on ice since 2017. Even though newer handsets have support for its virtual reality platform, the headset hasn’t received an update in over two years. The company wants you to know that it hasn’t given up and that there will be “multiple AR and VR products” being launched soon.

These remarks were made by Samsung’s director of developer relations for XR and gaming Farshid Fallah at the Augmented World Expo in California this week. He said that these products will be released in the coming months.

Fallah didn’t go into details about what these products will be. We know that there hasn’t been a new Gear VR since the Samsung Gear VR with Controller was released in April 2017. It did release the HMD Odyssey+ Windows Mixed Reality headset late last year but at $499, it’s not something that aimed at the average user.

He was talking about Samsung’s broader efforts with augmented and virtual reality, particularly the augmented reality features of the Galaxy S10. He suggested during the talk that Samsung has “other plans for Gear,” without providing any further details. Could Samsung release a new virtual reality headset in the coming months? One can argue that it’s about time that the company did that. A new VR headset with significantly improved internals would certainly be well received by fans of the platform.

The obvious thing would be to launch this new headset alongside the Galaxy Note 10 later this year. However, there’s little to suggest right now that a new headset is also on the docket for the company’s next flagship launch. It won’t happen until August at the very least so things could change by then.

We have also talked about the possibility that Samsung may ditch the Gear VR brand in favor of Galaxy VR. That’s something it has done for its wearable devices so it’s entirely possible that the same may also be done for the virtual reality headset.

Samsung Pay now works on the New York City mass transit system

New Yorkers will finally be able to use Samsung Pay to pay for their subway and bus rides using the mobile payments service. The company has confirmed that Samsung Pay supports the New York MTA’s new OMNY or One Metro New York contactless fare payment system.

What that means is that commuters will be able to breeze through turnstiles with Samsung Pay. However, OMNY is currently available on select routes and stations right now. It will surely expand down the road.

Samsung Pay makes navigating NYC’s public transport a breeze

The New York mass transit system’s new OMNY payment system doesn’t just enable mobile payments for Samsung Pay. The same privilege is also extended to rival services like Google Pay and Apple Pay. Even Fitbit’s service supports it. This isn’t unique to Samsung Pay but it’s good to know that Samsung’s mobile payment service is getting support at the same time as the others.

It eliminates the need for New Yorkers to carry around a MetroCard or to wait in line to buy a new card when they find out that they forget it at home. They can just use Samsung Pay at the turnstile or the bus terminal to pay. The fare remains the same. This will work on all Samsung Pay enabled phones (Galaxy S6 and up) as well as wearable devices like the Gear S2, Gear S3, Gear Fit 2, Gear Sport, Galaxy Watch and the Galaxy Watch Active.

Commuters should bear in mind that OMNY is only available on the 4, 5 and 6 stations between Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center and Grand Central right now in addition to Staten Island buses.

Galaxy A50 US launch may be closer than you think

There have been a few reports recently about an expected Galaxy A50 US launch. There’s more reason to believe now that it may be closer than you think. Samsung’s new Galaxy A series has done incredibly well in markets like India. The company will soon be bringing a handful of these new devices to North America.

The Galaxy A20, Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A70 are all expected to arrive in North America soon. The devices have been certified by the FCC so they have already cleared a major regulatory hurdle. The official Samsung Pay app has now been updated with what appears to be support for the Galaxy A50.

Galaxy A50 US launch could take place on June 21

The new Galaxy A series has performed well because it blends together some sought-after features in an affordably priced package. It was just the right formula to capture the Indian consumer’s attention. Samsung will be looking to replicate that success in the lucrative markets of North America as well.

The Galaxy A50 is one of Samsung’s first devices with an Infinity-U display. That’s the waterdrop style notch on its 6.4-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display. It’s also the first non-flagship with an optical in-display fingerprint sensor.

An update has been sent out for the Samsung Pay app which mentions “with A50 US” in the changelog. This would suggest that the app has received support for the US variant of the Galaxy A50. Something like this would only happen when the device’s release was just around the corner.

There has been no confirmation as yet from Samsung regarding the Galaxy A50 US launch. It’s also unclear whether the device will be offered by all four major carriers. It was reported recently that at least Verizon would be selling it. June 21 is when the Galaxy A50 is expected to officially launch in the United States.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 could sport insane fast charging speed

This isn’t the first time we’re hearing that the Galaxy Note 10 fast charging speed could be higher than the Galaxy S10 5G’s 25W. Most of Samsung’s recent devices only support 15W fast charging. Samsung’s rivals have long been touted their better fast charging speeds and it appears that the company will hit back at them with its upcoming flagship.

A new rumor suggests that the fast charging speed on the Galaxy Note 10 could be 45W. If that is indeed the case, it would be almost twice as fast as the Galaxy S10 5G. Not that this will be something to complain about.

Galaxy Note 10 fast charging speed could be 45W

The rumor comes from tech leakster @UniverseIce who posted a rather cryptic tweet featuring an image of Leonardo Da Vinci, the number 101101 and a lightning bolt. It’s already known that the Galaxy Note 10’s codename is Da Vinci and that the lightning bolt is a nod to fast charging. The 101101 number is in binary which in hex is precisely 45. Sure, it may seem like grasping at straws, but that’s really the only possible conclusion that can be drawn from this tweet.

It’s pertinent to mention here that the same leakster has previously said that the Galaxy Note 10 fast charging speed could be higher than 25W. Another source had claimed that the figure would be higher and not lower than 25W. The 50W figure has been thrown around in the rumor mill as well so the possibility of 45W fast charging doesn’t seem far-fetched.

With the cheaper Galaxy Note 10 expected to feature a 3,400mAh battery, a significant improvement in charging speeds could help placate customers. It will also mean that the Galaxy Note 10 Pro’s 4,500mAh battery gets juiced up that much faster. Since the Galaxy Note series has always been aimed at professionals, this would certainly be a worthwhile addition to the Galaxy Note 10, wouldn’t you agree?
