Pricing for the Galaxy Note 8 could start at $940 in Asia

Pricing for the Galaxy Note 8 could start at as much as CNY 6,288 ($942) for the base variant—6GB/64GB—and top out at CNY 7,988 ($1,200) for the long-rumored Emperor Edition, which should come with 6GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, in China, reports digital news outlet ITHome.

  • 6GB/64GB — CNY 6,288 ($942)
  • 6GB/128GB — CNY 7,088 ($1,062)
  • 6GB/256GB — CNY 7,988 ($1,200)

There’s no telling whether the aforementioned prices will apply in Australia, Europe and South America, though we’re expecting something similar; potentially even steeper in the latter region. At least, that’s what a prediction by reliable tipster Evan Blass has led us to believe.

Recent leaks, rumors and speculation suggest that the Galaxy Note 8 will sport a 6.3-inch edge-to-edge Infinity Display, an Exynos 8895/Snapdragon 835 CPU and at least a 3,300mAh battery. It should also ship running Android 7.1.1 Nougat skinned with Samsung’s Experience user interface.

To encourage potential customers to place an order, Samsung will reportedly offer several incentives: those who reserve a unit in the US will be able to choose either a 256GB microSD card, a convertible wireless charger or a Gear 360, while folk in Europe will receive a DeX dock.

Galaxy J5 (2016) spotted running Android 7.0 Nougat

The Galaxy J5 (2016) may be the next smartphone on Samsung’s list to receive the Android 7.0 update. The handset was spotted on Monday on the Wi-Fi Alliance’s online database running a build of Nougat, which is usually the final pit stop an upgrade makes before it’s distributed.

Just in case you missed the memo, Android 7.0 Nougat transports a ton of new features, including enhanced notifications, improved application permissions and an abundance of fresh emoji, in addition to the usual slew of bug fixes, stability improvements, and speed optimizations.

We’re not entirely surprised by this news, though. The Galaxy J5 (2016) is a relatively new smartphone, with its 5.2-inch AMOLED display and Snapdragon 410 processor—so there’s no reason it shouldn’t be treated to the latest (at the time of writing) flavor of the open-source operating system.

Samsung secures first batch of Snapdragon 845 CPUs for the Galaxy S9

Samsung has reported reserved the first batch of Snapdragon 845 CPUs for the upcoming Galaxy S9. The octa-core processor, which was inadvertently leaked when Qualcomm lodged a complaint against Apple with the International Trade Commission back in July, is the successor to the Snapdragon 835.

This won’t be the first time that the firm has teamed up with Qualcomm, though. It previously reached an agreement to acquire the first shipment of Snapdragon 835 CPUs for the Galaxy S8—and that win-win deal went smoothly, so it’s only natural that they want to work together again.

In line with its predecessor, the Galaxy S9 will only ship with a Snapdragon processor in China and the United States. It should come with the Samsung’s next-generation in-house CPU—dubbed the Exynos 8900—in all other markets, including Germany, India and, of course, the United Kingdom.

Earlier today, we reported that the Galaxy S9 could be the South Korean company’s first modular smartphone. It’s expected to sport an array of magnetic connectors, which will let you attach a ton of different accessories, like a battery pack, a gamepad and a 360-degree camera.

Samsung is testing the successor to the Galaxy A5 (2017)

Samsung is reportedly testing a successor to the Galaxy A5 (2017) for the Chinese market. The handset, which has been dubbed the Galaxy A5 (2018), is equipped with a Snapdragon 660 processor and 6GB of RAM, according to a listing on Geekbench’s online database, and will ship running Android 7.1.1 Nougat.

For comparison, the regular Galaxy A5 (2017) features an Exynos 7880 processor, 3GB of RAM and was recorded running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box. From whatever way you slice it, theGalaxy A5 (2018) is a vast improvement—but that’s to be expected from any variant headed to the Asian market.

Seeing as Samsung is looking to bring a dual-camera to its mid-range line-up, we’re not going to rule out the possibility of some design changes. If that turns out the be the case, though, we’re confident in saying that it won’t hit the shelves until after it’s first dual-camera smartphone, the Galaxy Note 8.

We should note, however, that it’s relatively easy to falsify benchmark results. It’s as straightforward as downloading a third-party application that allows you to alter your unit’s model number and internals (on paper, of course), so be sure to take this information with a considerable pinch of salt.

Galaxy A5 (2016) August security patch update released

Samsung detailed the August Security Maintenance Release for its smartphones a couple of weeks ago. The company has since been rolling it out for all supported devices. We’ve already seen it land on devices like the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S8.

The company is now rolling out the August security patch update for the Galaxy A5 (2016). The latest security update has been rolled out for this device soon after it received the July security patch not too long ago.

Firmware version A510FXXU4CQH2 is now being rolled out for this handset by Samsung. August security patch update for the Galaxy A5 (2016) weighs in at 215MB. The August security patch patches 28 vulnerabilities in the Android operating system.

It also brings fixes for 12 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE), those are the bugs that were discovered in Samsung’s software. The changelog mentions that this update installs the Facebook app on the device.

Those who own an unlocked Galaxy A5 (2016) should receive an over-the-air update notification in the near future informing them that this update is now available for download on their handset. They can also try manually pulling the update by heading over to the Settings app and going into the Software Update menu.

Samsung will launch the world’s largest QLED gaming monitor at Gamescom 2017

Samsung already offers several products for PC gamers and the company has now said that it’s going to “up the game” at Gamescom 2017. It’s going to launch the Samsung CHG90 QLED Gaming Monitor. Samsung says that this is the world’s largest QLED gaming monitor that delivers an IMAX-style cinematic viewing experience.

The 49-inch super ultra-wide 32:9 HDR (High Dynamic Range) CHG90 gaming monitor offers 3840 x 1080 resolution and a 1800R curvature for an immersive experience. Users will get a larger field of view and greater depth perception compared to other gaming monitors.

The over-sized screen is great for achieving peak performance throughout gameplay while the 32:9 aspect ratio enables gamers to see the game scenes in their entirety. The 144Hz screen refresh rate of Samsung’s new gaming monitor provides smooth action scenes. It can be adjusted to 60Hz/120Hz as and when required.

Samsung CHG90 also offers a 1ms response time, a game mode option and more lifelike colors with Quantum dot and HDR technology. It’s equivalent to two 27-inch 16:9 monitors side by side. This means that gamers don’t have to worry about multi-monitor setups so they have the ultimate multitasking flexibility.

Pricing has not yet been confirmed. Samsung says that the CHG90 will be available in Germany following Gamescom 2017 which takes place from August 22-26 at the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany.

Galaxy S9 rumored to feature a modular design

Many companies have tried to embrace modular design for their smartphones. They enable customers to enhance the functionality of their smartphones by purchasing additional modules that perform a specific function.

We’ve seen modules for enhancing camera capabilities and the sound experience from other manufacturers. Samsung hasn’t done something like this as yet but if a new rumor is to be believed, the company might be considering a modular design for the Galaxy S9.

Its implementation of the modular design is said to be similar to Motorola’s Moto Z line. If that’s true, the Galaxy S9 will have magnetic pins at the back which will be used to attach external modules easily.

Andy Rubin’s Essential Phone also uses a similar modular design. It relies on magnetic pins for external modules, one of them being a 360-degree camera. The modules not only enhance functionality but they also generate more revenues for the company.

It’s still far too early to be sure of anything as far as the Galaxy S9 is concerned. We’re bound to hear a lot more rumors about this handset before it’s due next year. Samsung is said to be mulling the modular design idea right now and hasn’t approved it as yet so it may or may not make the cut.
