New Snapdragon 710-powered Samsung Galaxy tablet spotted

An upcoming Galaxy tablet powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset has been spotted on the Geekbench benchmark website. The Samsung SM-T545 appeared on Geekbench earlier today, and while we don’t know what this tablet will be called, it’s possible that we’re looking at the Tab Active Pro that was revealed by way of a trademark application earlier this month. It could also be another Galaxy Tab A as well, but nothing can be confirmed at the moment.

The Snapdragon 710 is accompanied by 4GB of RAM, and our sources tell us there’s 64GB of storage on the tablet, which puts it somewhere in the lower mid-range category. The only other device Samsung has launched with the Snapdragon 710 is the Galaxy A8s, which is available only in China and South Korea (where it launched as the Galaxy A9 Pro). The software on the SM-T545, as expected for a device coming up in the next couple of months, is Android 9 Pie, probably with version 1.1 of Samsung’s One UI interface.

Geekbench doesn’t have a listing for a SM-T540, which would be the Wi-Fi-only variant, but we’re assuming both a Wi-Fi-only and an LTE variant will be launched when the device goes official. Exactly when the device will go official is anyone’s guess at this point. More information should come out in the next few days now that Samsung has begun testing the new tablet and give us a clearer picture of what to expect.

The Galaxy Fit e is a part of Samsung’s 2019 lineup of wearable devices, which also includes its richer sibling, the Galaxy Fit. The new fitness band has a 0.74-inch PMOLED screen with a resolution of 64 x 128 pixels. It packs a 70 mAh battery, which is capable of running the device for up to a week on normal usage. Features on offer include activity tracking, motion detection, sleep, stress, and heart-rate tracking, and more. It comes with MIL-STD-810G military-grade ruggedness certification and is water-resistant for up to 10 minutes at a depth of 50 meters.

The device is extremely lightweight at 15 grams, and can be worn day in, day out without bothering your arms. At just €39, the Galaxy Fit e offers a good value for money. But whether it’s worth your money or not is something you may better find in our review.

Samsung expands its SmartThings portfolio with a camera, smart plug and a smart bulb

Samsung is expanding its SmartThings portfolio in the US by introducing a camera, WiFi smart plug and a smart bulb. The new products are available to buy nationwide starting today. They work within the SmartThings ecosystem, and can be purchased though Samsung e-Store, Best Buy, and a few other retailers. All three devices work with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung’s own Bixby voice assistants.

Ideal for smart home beginners

The new SmartThings Cam is a Full HD (1080p) 145-degree, wide-angle camera with night vision and HDR imaging. It also has object detection, which Samsung says can differentiate between people and the motion of pets or a passing vehicle. The monitoring zone can be customized to receive notifications when something moves in that specific area. The two-way audio lets you talk to a housemate, a visitor, or your pets when you’re away.

The SmartThings Cam comes with 24 hours of free cloud storage for up to four cameras. You can extend the storage period to 30 days with a Premium subscription. It costs $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year, and lets you connect up to 8 SmartThings Cams. Also, you don’t need a SmartThings hub to use the camera. Just plug it in and connect it to your home WiFi, though connecting it to a hub gives it the ability to link with other smart devices in your home.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a battery and needs a wired connection. It’s also not weather-proof and is only meant to be installed indoors. However, it’s compact size, and more importantly, the price tag of $89.99 makes up for those limitations.

The new SmartThings WiFi Smart Plug can turn nearly every lamp, small appliance or electronic device in your home smart. It turns them into voice-activated devices, and also doesn’t need a hub to work. You can switch them on or off, set a timer or schedule them over voice commands through Bixby, Google Assistant and Alexa. The plug costs $17.99.

The SmartThings Smart Bulb, meanwhile, requires a SmartThings Hub to function. It is also compatible with the above-listed voice assistants, allowing you to control it with your voice, or set routines to automatically turn on and off, or go dim. The new bulbs cost $9.99 each. These aggressively priced entry-level products certainly look ideal for smart home beginners.

Galaxy Fit e shows up on Flipkart ahead of launch in India

Samsung appears to be making preparations for the launch of the Galaxy Fit e in India. The fitness tracker now has a dedicated landing page on local online retailer Flipkart, which informs prospective customers that “The next gen of fitness is coming.”

The small wearable device isn’t accompanied by an exact launch date, but the “Stay Tuned” banner suggests that the landing page should be populated with more information sooner rather than later. Likewise, pricing details are missing, but when the budget fitness tracker originally launched in some countries back in May, it carried a price tag of around $45. In theory, at least, this means that the product should not exceed that price range for its release in India.

The Galaxy Fit e is not a bad prospect for buyers who might be looking for a budget, lightweight fitness wearable weighing in at only 15g. It tracks basic activities and has sleep tracking, while also taking advantage of a heart rate monitor. You can read more about the gadget in our recent review and see if it would be a good fitness companion for your particular needs. If not, there’s an alternative in the regular Galaxy Fit, however, this model is more expensive and currently out of stock on Flipkart.

Galaxy A5 (2017) starts receiving the June security patch in many markets

Samsung’s Galaxy A5 (2017) has started receiving the June 2019 security patch in multiple markets around the world. It appears the rollout has begun last week itself and has expanded to more variants and regions since then. The 2017 midranger has been receiving updates consistently since its launch, and Samsung is keeping that record intact with the latest release.

The SM-A520F variant is currently receiving the update in the Netherlands, Ukraine, Russia, Italy, Germany, Spain, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Brazil, and a few other regions. The SM-A520W variant, meanwhile, is receiving the update in Canada. As of now, there doesn’t seem to be any trace of the June update for the Korean variants (SM-A520L, SM-A520K, and SM-A520S) of the device.

As detailed by Samsung in the June security bulletin, the June 2019 Security Maintenance Release (SMR) fixes eight critical and over a dozen high-risk vulnerabilities in the Android OS. It also includes patches for 11 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items of varying intensities. Other than the security fixes, the update doesn’t seem to bring anything new to the device.

Since the rollout has started a week back, the release should have reached a vast majority of users. To check if the update is available to your device, go to Settings, select Software Update, and tap on the Download updates manually option. If you don’t see the update yet but want to have it right away, you can download the latest compatible firmware from our database and manually flash it.

[Poll] If the Galaxy Note 10 doesn’t have a microSD slot, will you skip it?

A rather unsettling rumor about the Galaxy Note 10 came up during the weekend. It claimed that the Galaxy Note 10 won’t have a microSD card slot. Forget the 3.5mm headphone jack, if this turns out to be true, the criticism is bound to be deafening.

The rumor claimed that it would only be the Galaxy Note 10 Pro that comes with a microSD card slot. Customers who opt for the smaller and cheaper model will have no option to externally expand the storage. Samsung has done this once before, in 2015 to be precise, but rolled back the decision merely a year later.

So the question is, would you skip the Galaxy Note 10 if it does indeed come without a microSD slot? Do you think that it doesn’t make much sense for a Galaxy Note flagship to ship without one? Or are you so keen on the Note series that you’d begrudgingly pay for the more expensive Galaxy Note 10 Pro just for the microSD card slot? Please do vote below and share your thoughts with us in the comments section.

SamMobile Daily Recap, June 24, 2019: Galaxy Note 9 update, Galaxy S10 5G sales, and more

Official confirms Galaxy Fold issues won’t affect Note 10 August debut

Samsung is facing two major device releases by the end of the year. With the Galaxy Fold having been delayed from its intended April 26 release, the foldable luxury phone is getting dangerously close to the usual yearly launch window occupied by the Note series. But despite some industry rumors, Samsung is adamant in keeping the Galaxy Note 10 on schedule, regardless of how the Galaxy Fold story will unfold.

“The Galaxy Note 10 will have its own timeline for its debut in August, regardless of the Galaxy Fold’s launch schedule” revealed a Samsung official to the Korean media in a recent report. “The company keeps the same stance about the Galaxy Fold’s schedule.” In other words, the Fold’s delay won’t affect the launch strategy set forth for the Galaxy Note 10 series, and any plans surrounding the phablet should not have an effect on the Fold either.

The official didn’t mention any exact time frames in which the Galaxy Fold might be planned for release, but the report hints at a possible late-July launch. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Note 10 has now been virtually confirmed by the unnamed official to debut in August, while a recent rumor hints at an August 7 event.

The company insider cited by the source also reconfirmed that Samsung’s engineers are still working to iron out the Fold’s flaws. “Company officials are actively testing the foldable devices with user trial versions as they are reporting errors occurring in various settings.” Intense firmware testing has been a part of the smartphone’s recent history. The Galaxy Fold might not be “ready to hit the market” just yet, but the hardware issues surrounding the display have mostly been fixed and the company seems to be entirely focused on improving the software experience.

The phone might be getting a late-July launch, according to speculations, and it doesn’t seem like it’s been canceled altogether, despite AT&T canceling Fold pre-orders and issuing a $100 promo card to satisfy its customers and Best Buy canceling orders as well. Whatever the case may be, Samsung seems to be viewing the launch of the Fold and Galaxy Note 10 series as two entirely separate scenarios which shouldn’t affect each other in any way.

Galaxy S10 5G sales have exceeded 1 million units in South Korea

South Korea was the first country to flip the switch on mobile 5G networks. Samsung was the first to bring a 5G smartphone to the market with the Galaxy S10 5G. A new report from Samsung’s home country reveals that the company has sold more than one million units of the Galaxy S10 5G so far.

Samsung started selling the Galaxy S10 5G in South Korea on April 5. It has been about 80 days since the device went on sale and a million units have been sold already. It has become one of the most popular models of the Galaxy S10 series in South Korea.

Galaxy S10 5G is a hit in South Korea

Multiple sources from the local mobile industry reveal that an average of 15,000 Galaxy S10 5G units have been sold every single day. Customers have increasingly opted for the 5G variant since carriers are providing 5G service now. The Galaxy S10 5G accounted for 20 percent of overall sales of the Galaxy S10 series by end of April. This figure jumped up to 80 percent as of June.

Carriers tend to heavily subsidize the cost of smartphones in South Korea. That, coupled with the availability of 5G service, would have compelled customers opting for the Galaxy S10+ to go for the Galaxy S10 5G instead. Samsung also has scant competition in this segment of the market. While LG did launch a 5G variant of the V50 ThinQ, it hasn’t done as well as the Galaxy S10 5G.

Samsung has gradually made the 5G variant of the Galaxy S10 available in other markets as their 5G networks are lit up. It’s available in the United States from Verizon and Sprint so far. Telstra is selling it in Australia while Vodafone and EE have brought it to the United Kingdom. Samsung will be working with carriers in Germany, Spain and Italy to launch the device there over the summer.

South Korea would have received another Samsung 5G smartphone in April had the company not had to delay the Galaxy Fold launch. It did have a 5G variant of its foldable smartphone ready for South Korea. The upcoming Galaxy Note 10 will also have a 5G variant that’s likely going to be released in Samsung’s home country first.

Galaxy A10s to sport fingerprint scanner and a dual camera

More information surrounding the upcoming Galaxy A10s has popped up over the weekend through a series of FCC documents. The papers pertain to the model number SM-A107F and reveal the smartphone’s overall dimensions along with several other features. They offer a glimpse at the rear panel’s design, which suggests that the device should now be equipped with a fingerprint sensor and possibly even two main cameras.

More features, bigger battery, and a dual camera?

While the ongoing Galaxy A10 is the only device in the mid-range series to lack a fingerprint sensor, this characteristic is bound to change with the release of the upgraded model. The sketches depicting the FCC label show a clear cut-out for a rear fingerprint scanner mounted in the center.

Likewise, they indicate that the LED flash will no longer be contained within the rear camera cutout. More interestingly, the camera cutout itself has retained the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners, which strongly hints at the possibility that the Galaxy A10s will have two main cameras instead of a single sensor, much like the Galaxy A20, A20e, A30, and A40 all have.

There’s no information surrounding the camera configuration, but another area in which the SM-A107F should be upgraded is the battery capacity. The phone would reportedly rely on a 3,900mAh unit – up from 3,400mAh – and its footprint is apparently just a bit taller, measuring 157mm in height, as opposed to 155mm.

Previously, we found out through our sources that the Galaxy A10s will feature 32GB of onboard memory – same as the device that it’s based on – and that it will launch in four color options: red, green, blue, and black. Furthermore, an earlier entry of the SM-A107F in Geekbench hints at 2GB of RAM, a MediaTek Helio P22 chipset, and Android 9 Pie.

It remains to be seen when and where the Galaxy A10s will become available for purchase, but seeing how it emerged from the FCC, the device is virtually one step closer to release.

Samsung launches the Galaxy Tab S5e and Tab A 10.1 in India

Months after their official unveiling, Samsung has finally launched the Galaxy Tab S5e and Galaxy Tab A 10.1 in India. While the former is a midrange tablet that is priced like a flagship thanks to its AMOLED display, the latter model is a budget offering and carries a competitive price tag.

The Galaxy Tab S5e is the lightest and the thinnest tablet ever made by Samsung. Unfortunately, the device’s biggest selling point comes at a cost – both literally and figuratively. Apart from being priced way higher than an entry-level iPad, it lacks a headphone jack and seems to suffer from Wi-Fi dropout issues when held in a certain manner. You can read our review of the tablet to learn about it in detail.

The Tab S5e is priced at INR 35,999 (~$520) for the Wi-Fi-only variant and INR 39,999 (~$575) for the Wi-Fi+LTE variant. It is available for purchase starting today across all leading online and offline retailers in the country. As a launch offer, Samsung is offering the Book Cover Keyboard at a discounted price of INR 3,500 instead of the retail price of INR 7,999 for customers who purchase the device before July 31.

The Galaxy Tab A 10.1 is a standard budget affair but is priced a bit more competitively. It sports a metal unibody design with a 10.1″ Full HD “corner-to-corner” display. Xiaomi, Samsung’s main competitor in India, hasn’t launched any tablets in the country in a long time, which should help in sales of this budget tablet.

It carries a price tag of INR 14,999 (~$215) and INR 19,999 (~$290) for the Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi+LTE variants, respectively. The former variant will be available for purchase only on Amazon.in and Samsung e-Shop starting June 26, while the latter will be available across all leading retailers beginning July 1. Both tablets come in silver, black, and gold.

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge to no longer get quarterly security updates

Samsung has changed the security update schedule for the Galaxy S7. The device is now on the list of Galaxy phones that receive “other regular security updates,” a move that comes just two months after Samsung shifted the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge to a quarterly update schedule and stopped offering them monthly security updates. Now, the Galaxy S7 duo will only get security updates when an urgent security issue needs to be addressed.

Of course, regular readers of ours will know that Samsung had simply delayed the inevitable when it put the Galaxy S7 on quarterly updates earlier this year. The Korean giant provides monthly security patches to its flagships for three years after they first hit retail shelves and then moves them to the updates-only-when-necessary schedule, so the fact that the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge were promised quarterly updates in their fourth year had come as a pleasant surprise. Alas, while we had expected that to be a precursor for longer support for Galaxy flagships in general, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

However, it seems some mid-range devices will still reap the benefit of quarterly updates even in their fourth year. The Galaxy A5 (2016), to be precise – that device was the first that Samsung put on the quarterly schedule after it had completed three years on the market. The A5 (2016) is still going to get a security update every three months, although it’s possible it will join the Galaxy S7 at the bottom of Samsung’s software support ladder in the next couple of months.

Galaxy S8 receiving the June 2019 security patch now

We’re in the final week of this month and many of Samsung’s devices are just now receiving the latest security patch for this month. It’s the Galaxy S8’s turn today. Samsung has started rolling out the June 2019 security patch for the Galaxy S8.

Samsung has rolled out the latest security maintenance release for quite a few of its devices recently. The Galaxy Note 8 has got it and so have several mid-range and premium mid-range devices. The Galaxy S10 series got it late last week.

Galaxy S8 June 2019 security patch rolling out

Samsung is now rolling out firmware version G950FXXS5DSF1 for the Galaxy S8. It has been released in Greece, Germany, Italy, Spain, Luxembourg, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Nordic countries so far. The firmware can also be downloaded right away from our database.

The June 2019 security patch had been detailed at the beginning of the month. Samsung confirmed that it features fixes for eight critical Android OS vulnerabilities in addition to more than a dozen high-risk ones. 11 vulnerabilities that were found in Samsung’s own software have been patched as well.

Galaxy S8 owners in other markets should expect to start receiving the June 2019 security patch in the near future. It won’t be long now before this update is also released for the Galaxy S8+.

T-Mobile and Verizon rolling out Galaxy Note 8 June security update

The Galaxy Note 8 is being treated to the June 2019 security update by Verizon and T-Mobile. The device is getting software version N950USQS5DSF5 and N950USQS5DSF6 on T-Mobile and Verizon respectively, and the update only has the new security enhancements going by the rather generic changelog posted by both carriers. And with the Galaxy Note 8 having received two major OS upgrades, it’s most likely going to get only basic security updates for the rest of its support cycle.

The June 2019 security patch brings fixes for eight critical vulnerabilities in the Android OS in addition to over a dozen high-risk vulnerabilities. The most severe critical security vulnerability could have allowed a remote attacker to use a special file to run arbitrary code on a device in the context of a privileged process. 11 serious vulnerabilities discovered in Samsung’s software have been fixed as well, including one that could result in users downloading an infected app from the Galaxy Store.

Both T-Mobile and Verizon have made the update available over the air, and you should be able to download it from the Settings » Software update menu on your Galaxy Note 8. Firmware for the new update is available in our firmware database for those interested in manually upgrading to the latest software.
