Samsung becomes world’s first brand to launch memory with CXL Interconnect standard

Samsung has announced that it has launched the industry’s first memory module (DRAM) that uses the new CXL (Compute Express Link) Interconnect standard. It is a DDR5 RAM unit that is designed for AI and high-performance computing tasks. It is intended to be used in data centers and cloud servers.

CXL’s development was started in 2019. It is an open, industry-supported interconnect standard that is based on the brand-new PCIe 5.0 interface. It offers high-speed data transfer between the host processor and various other parts such as accelerators, memory buffer, and smart IO devices. It also greatly reduces latency and expands the memory capacity and bandwidth. Unlike standard DDR RAM modules with limited memory channels, Samsung Semiconductor’s CXL-based DRAM modules can scale up memory capacity to a terabyte level and still reduce latency by using memory caching technology.

Samsung has been working with various chipset, data center, and server brands to develop the CXL standard. Both AMD and Intel will make their server-grade products compatible with Samsung’s new CXL Interconnect-based DDR5 memory modules. The South Korean firm has also developed various software technologies such as error management, interface converting, and memory mapping to allow CPUs and GPUs to use CXL RAM modules as the main memory. The new memory module from Samsung has already been validated in Intel’s next-generation server platforms.

Cheolmin Park, VP of the Memory Product Planning Team at Samsung Electronics, said, “This is the industry’s first DRAM-based memory solution that runs on the CXL interface, which will play a critical role in serving data-intensive applications including AI and machine learning in data centers as well as cloud environments. Samsung will continue to raise the bar with memory interface innovation and capacity scaling to help our customers, and the industry at-large, better manage the demands of larger, more complex, real-time workloads that are key to AI and the data centers of tomorrow.

Samsung has lost the race for acquiring ASML’s EUV equipment to TSMC

Samsung appears to be losing the semiconductor race to TSMC, and it looks like this outcome has to do with Samsung’s inability to secure enough semiconductor production equipment for its EUV processes. Or rather, it may have more to do with TSMC beating Samsung to the punch and securing enough EUV production equipment ahead of time.

By the end of the first quarter of 2021, TSMC was able to increase its contract manufacturing market share by 8 points compared to Q1 2019. It had a share of 56%, outperforming Samsung who has lost 1% market share in the same quarter. But more worrying for Samsung is that TSMC has secured major US customers including Apple and Advanced Micro Devices.

TSMC acquired EUV equipment from ASML before Samsung

Samsung has suffered setbacks due to various reasons, such as its factory in Texas getting temporarily shut down due to severe weather conditions, and the fact that US companies seemingly have a preference towards TSMC thanks to favorable Taiwan-US relationships.

Some US-based fabless companies who are in need of semiconductor foundries have reportedly grown more reluctant towards signing long-term agreements with Samsung because South Korea maintains two-way diplomacy with both China and the US, therefore there’s a higher risk of the supply chain being disrupted by political events.

But Samsung Semiconductor’s problems became much more evident when the company failed to acquire enough equipment for EUV semiconductor manufacturing from ASML. As some of you might recall, Lee Jae-yong met with ASML CEO and CTO last year to discuss the supply of equipment necessary for 7nm-and-lower EUV-based processes, but said meeting may have not been very lucrative.

According to Nikkei, TSMC was able to beat Samsung to the punch and secure 70% of ASML’s equipment before Samsung. And because ASML is the only company in the world capable of supplying EUV equipment of this industrial scale, Samsung has lost a lot of ground to TSMC who will undoubtedly use this advantage to widen the technology gap between it and its rival even further.

Meanwhile, TSMC wants to allocate $100 billion to capital spending by 2023 to combat the semiconductor shortage, and Samsung is trying to achieve similar results by speeding up the construction of its P3 factory.

The Galaxy F52 5G looks nothing like the A52 in leaked hands-on photos

Samsung’s Galaxy F52 5G has been spotted in a few hands-on photos, and needless to say, the phone doesn’t quite look like a rebranded Galaxy A52 5G. It has an Infinity-O display design with a corner cutout, a camera housing that doesn’t look quite as good as the Galaxy A52’s camera bump, and once again, unlike the A-branded hero device, the Galaxy F52 5G appears to have a glossy back panel.

The differences don’t stop with the exterior design. The source claims that the Galaxy F52 5G has an HD+ TFT LCD display instead of an AMOLED panel, as well as a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. But on the other hand, the Galaxy F52 5G should sport the same Snapdragon 750G chipset as the A52 5G, and a 64MP main camera.

The selfie sensor is said to have a 16MP resolution. The device should be powered by a 4,350mAh battery with 25W fast charging capabilities.

Don’t hold our breath for a high refresh-rate display

Assuming that this information is true and the Galaxy F52 5G has a 6.5-inch HD+ TFT LCD panel then it’s very unlikely for it to support a high refresh rate. And since the phone looks so different on the outside, it is possible that it also lacks an IP rating. These are two of the best characteristics of the Galaxy A52 5G.

All in all, the Galaxy F52 5G is far from a rebranded Galaxy A52 5G, but that’s not really a point in its favor unless Samsung plans on selling the F-branded phone for an incredibly-good price.

The last piece of this leaked puzzle suggests that the Galaxy F52 5G runs Android 11 / One UI 3.1, it has a 3.5mm headphone jack, and it will go on sale in at least three color options: dark blue, white, and gray. Check out the Galaxy F52 5G photo gallery below and feel free to share your thoughts. Let us know what would compel you to buy the Galaxy F52 5G over the Galaxy A52 5G.

Are you experiencing ear inflammation because of the Galaxy Buds Pro?

A rather unusual story regarding the Galaxy Buds Pro is making the rounds in China, with reports claiming that Samsung’s new earbuds may cause ear inflammation for some users. The story appears to have been reported on China’s state-controlled broadcaster CCTV judging by a screenshot shared by IT Home — seen below — but Samsung appears to have already addressed these concerns.

According to the media, Samsung replied that its products have passed international standards tests and they contain no harmful substances. The eartips can contain traces of acrylate, whereas the stainless steel parts contain nickel, so anyone who has allergies to these materials should avoid using these earbuds, or most earbuds on the market, whether they originate from Samsung or any other brand. These are very common materials.

Are the eartips too large and uncomfortable?

The majority of complaints seemingly come from Galaxy Buds Pro owners, some of which suspect that ear inflammation might be caused by the size of the eartips. They claim that Samsung may have made the eartips too large as a way to improve noise cancellation, but this causes discomfort and excessive sweating.

On the other hand, the Galaxy Buds Pro earbuds ship with a few pairs of eartips in different sizes, so we’re not sure how this could be a problem, unless the smallest size is still too large for some users, which could very well be the case. Even so, there’s still no evidence that this design could be the cause of ear inflammation for these customers.

According to reports from the local media, Samsung replied by saying that if there’s a possibility of such discomfort caused by the size of the eartips, users should make sure to clean and disinfect the earbuds regularly to keep the ear canal dry.

Have you had any such issues with your Galaxy Buds Pro? We haven’t, and we found the new earbuds to be more comfortable than the Galaxy Buds and the Galaxy Buds+. Check our Galaxy Buds Pro review for more information on that. But in case you do find Samsung’s new earbuds to be uncomfortable, is it to the point where you’d claim they’re unhealthy? Feel free to share your experience with the earbuds in the comment section below.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 camera specs leaked, could feature under-display camera

Samsung is expected to unveil three new high-end smartphones—Galaxy S21 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3—in August. While the designs of the three smartphones have been leaked over the past few weeks, the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s camera specs were mostly unknown. Now, the phone’s camera specs have been leaked.

Samsung tipster @FrontTron has claimed that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will have a total of five cameras (two selfie cameras and three rear-facing cameras). At the front, the phone could feature a 10MP selfie camera (Sony IMX374, 1.22µm pixels) fitted inside a punch-hole-shaped cutout on the cover display. Below the internal foldable display, Samsung could use a 16MP (Sony IMXx71, 1µm pixels) under-display camera. This means that the internal display will be devoid of any punch-hole-shaped cutout.

At the rear, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 could feature a tripe-camera setup consisting of a 12MP wide-angle camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 12MP telephoto camera. While the focal length of the rear-facing cameras isn’t known yet, it is being expected that the phone will have a 3x telephoto lens with OIS. The 12MP wide-angle camera could feature OIS as well for sharper shots in low-light conditions and smoother videos. We can also expect 4K 60fps video recording from all the cameras.

We had exclusively revealed that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 features an official IP rating for some form of dust and water resistance, offering the phone a much-needed strength. The phone could have a 7.5-inch foldable display and a 6.2-inch cover display, and both will have a 120Hz refresh rate. The phone could run Android 11 out of the box and come equipped with the Snapdragon 888 processor, 12GB/16GB RAM, 256GB/512GB internal storage, an S Pen, and a 4,400mAh battery.

[Poll] Still interested in Samsung’s Android Wear watches? Google is

Android Wear on Samsung hardware is a big deal post-2016. Regardless of whether or not you’ve forgotten that it was a deal in the first place, which I totally did not and it absolutely is. You know, as absolute as such a statement can be, not coming directly from Samsung. But don’t worry, that’s still pretty absolute, for all intents and purposes.

And I should know, I make predictions about Samsung-affiliated and adjacent things for a living.
This naturally makes be pretty good at them, complementing the only aspect of my character – sarcasm. What I’m not good at for real, however, is reading people’s minds.

Look at the clock: Is it time for Samsung to show Google how good products are made? Again?

Hence this poll – read your minds out loud and of your own volition, human, so that we can proceed with the act of discussing the contents thereof. Deal? When the news of this now-public secret first broke out some months ago, quite a few of our readers sounded pretty excited about the prospect of an Android Wear wearable made by a company that knows how to make hardware.

There’s got to be an Apple joke somewhere in here. Hey, maybe it’s behind this conveniently placed poll! And if not, check out the weekly giveaway thread and let me know, pretty please:

The entire Galaxy Tab S7+ Lite color range is now on display

Samsung is expected to release the Galaxy Tab S7+ Lite in a total of five color options, two of which were revealed in leaked renders last week. The remaining three color options — blue, green, and silver — have also been leaked today in press renders by the same source — @evleaks — completing the entire color range; at least as we know it to this point.

The renders look virtually the same as last week except they’re in different colors. The tablet is depicted along with a color-matched Book Cover and S Pen. The Galaxy Tab S7+ Lite should be equipped with stereo speakers, dual main cameras, and the Snapdragon 750G chipset.

Although this has yet to be officially confirmed, Samsung is expected to name its new tablet the ‘Galaxy Tab S7+ Lite’ because it combines a large 12.4-inch display with a mid-range chipset. It will be interesting to see if Samsung will attempt to market the upcoming model as a multimedia or productivity-oriented tablet, or both. Samsung has never combined the ‘Plus’ and ‘Lite’ monikers before, so we’ll have to wait and see.

An old leaked roadmap claimed that the Galaxy Tab S7+ Lite — or the Galaxy Tab S7 Lite as it was referred to back then — will be unveiled in June, but Samsung has yet to spill the beans on an official date. We’ll keep you posted.

Nope, Samsung will never make a smart car – here’s why

Samsung has been flirting with the automotive industry again this month, confirming that at least one new sizable chipmaking projects catering to vehicle manufacturers is underway. But what does that exactly mean?

That’s a surprisingly difficult question to answer, so it’s better to start with what it doesn’t mean – self-driving of any sort. Or rather, should Samsung have anything to do with the first wave of autonomous transportation, it’s going to be providing the chips handling the brains of a vehicle fleet or five.

But uncertain times are ahead for chipmaking, on the whole. And the Korean giant is currently coming to grips with much larger issues, including the likelihood of a major silicon shortage.

A self-driven strategy with no driver’s license?

So, why bother with carmakers now, of all times? It would appears that’s just a some unfortunate timing on Samsung’s part. Besides, the company’s latest push in the automotive sector is hardly the most exciting project across any unit of time or space. But that’s alright, the automotive industry hasn’t been particularly exciting in a long time, anyway.

In fact, the former Artic Cloud division of Samsung that was eliminated in a 2019 rebalancing was a much more exciting prospect for both IoT and connected vehicles, in particular. These days, the conglomerate, on the whole, is much more concerned with profits  and optimizations. As is customary for any business of this size. Not that there ever were too many of those to compare against.

Especially since Samsung’s kind of in a league of its own when it comes to both technological capabilities and money-making. Maybe those two are somehow related, eh? Its track record seems to suggest as much, especially combined with world-class marketing efforts that have been ongoing for many a year.

The point being, Samsung’s already stretched pretty thin, bleeding–edge talent-wise. On account of being an innovator in so many fields already, plus a consistent supplier in the automotive space. Even a much more desperate Samsung than the one we’re looking at today probably wouldn’t commit to an aimless self-driving car pursuit beyond a dashboard of some sorts. So, pretty much what it’s doing already, anyway.

Besides, Seoul knows that betting on batteries is a much smarter play than trying to lead the electrification of land traffic. And with the Ericsson drama finally ending this week, it’s fair to assume Samsung’s top international attorneys are hoping for some peace and quiet before getting back into the ring.

This would be why Samsung has recently been more concerned with chasing governments from Vietnam to the European Union – or perhaps the other way around – over the prospects of some heavily subsidized government projects rather than figuring out how to deliver better mid-range chips to automakers. That’s not where the real money is.

Exynos 2200 processor could be used in smartphones and laptops

Samsung had confirmed earlier this year that it would launch a new Exynos processor that will use AMD’s Radeon GPU. The company has been in collaboration with AMD for the past two years to develop a powerful mobile GPU that is better than ARM’s Mali series. However, it wasn’t clear if the processor would be for smartphones or laptops. Now, more information about it has been revealed.

According to a new report coming out of South Korea via Korea Economic Daily, Samsung will launch its next flagship Exynos chipset (probably Exynos 2200) in the second half of this year, and that it will feature AMD Radeon GPU designed for low-power devices. Although it could first debut in an ARM-based Windows 10 laptop, it is being claimed that the chipset could also be used in smartphones and tablets.

This chipset will reportedly be manufactured using Samsung Foundry’s own 5nm fabrication process. The report states that the upcoming Exynos processor will feature “extraordinary computing power and battery efficiency.” If this information turns out to be true, Samsung could become the first brand apart from Qualcomm to launch an ARM-based processor for Windows 10 laptops. This chipset could also feature built-in 5G connectivity and advanced wireless technologies like Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi 6E.

The Exynos 2200 is rumored to rival Apple’s M1 and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8Cx Gen 2 processors. Apple’s new chipset, which was unveiled late last year, stunned the whole world with its desktop-beating performance and twice the battery life of other laptop CPUs from Intel. Qualcomm, however, hasn’t shown a huge improvement over the previous-generation Snapdragon processor for laptops.

Samsung donates 1,000 Galaxy Tabs to Kenyan refugees

Samsung is donating a cool thousand Galaxy Tab devices to Kenyan refugees. More specifically, the charitable act is aimed at improving the educational situation among the refugee youth in the country. And to be completely accurate, the deed was already done, photo op included (see attached).

Not to take away from yet another in the long series of charitable acts on Samsung’s part.

Is it too late to trademark ‘Samsung: connected people’ as a marketing slogan?

As years go by, the Korean giant keeps pushing itself toward increasingly more noble goals. From subsidizing globally sustainable practices to leading by example, pursuing stronger environmental protections and aggressively inventive awareness campaigns, Samsung has definitely put its money where its activist mouth is.

Probably. It’s still a faceless entity, so kind of hard to tell.

What’s way easier easier to judge, however, is whether giving away tens of thousands of dollars worth of consumer electronics goods can improve the the quality of education or any other institutionalized form of anything. The answer is affirmative, resources remain a thing that mankind deems highly desirable.

The donation was handled by the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, Samsung said in a prepared statement. Some of the tablets have already found their way to their intended recipients, while the rest will be in Kenya shortly, delivered by UNHCR staff, who’s also in charge of the majority of the educational activities that are ongoing at  two of the world’s oldest standing refugee camps – Kakuma and Dadaab, both of which were established in 1992. Yup, we’re going to need more tablets to solve this one.

Galaxy M51 crushes Galaxy S21 Ultra and every other phone in battery test

The Galaxy M51 has a 7,000mAh battery that easily lasts two days on a single charge. We had mentioned in our Galaxy M51 review that the phone simply cannot be killed in a day, no matter what you do. Now, a new battery test has proved that the Galaxy M51 crushes the Galaxy S21 Ultra and every other smartphone that has been released recently.

DxOMark, which is usually known for its camera tests, has now started testing the battery life of smartphones. As expected, the Galaxy M51 topped DxOMark’s battery test chart with a score of 88 points. The Snapdragon 888 version of the Galaxy S21 Ultra scored 70 points, while the Exynos 2100 version of the phone scored 57 points.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max is ranked fourth on the list with a score of 78 points, which is quite a bit higher than the Galaxy S21 Ultra. However, the highest-end iPhone still uses a 60Hz display whereas all other flagship Android smartphones use displays with a 120Hz or even higher refresh rate.

The battery test by DxOMark uses scientific methodologies, a faraday cage, and a touch robot to remain as objective as possible. The company tests various use cases such as voice calling on a 3G network, music streaming, offline video playback, online video streaming (on both cellular and Wi-Fi networks), and gaming.

The test also includes battery charging speeds to give an overall idea as to what you can expect from a smartphone’s battery. The numbers from battery charge and discharge tests are then normalized. The whole test takes 6.5 days to complete and it includes over 70 sub-tests. You can read more about the test by clicking the source link below.

While Samsung has improved the Exynos 2100 a lot over its predecessor, the Exynos variant of the Galaxy S21 Ultra still lasts less than the Snapdragon version. The company needs to work a bit more to improve the performance and power efficiency of its Exynos chipsets. It is being rumored that the Exynos 2200 processor will be unveiled later this year with AMD graphics and that it will have higher power efficiency than the Exynos 2100.

Galaxy S21 FE, Z Fold 3, and Z Flip 3 could launch in August 2021

After launching the Galaxy S21 series earlier this year, the company is ready to launch three new high-end smartphones in the second half of 2020. The Galaxy S21 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 were earlier rumored to launch sometime in July 201, but it is now being reported that the upcoming phones could launch a little later.

A new report from Yonhap News claims that Samsung is currently in talks with South Korean mobile carriers to launch the Galaxy S21 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 in late August 2021. That’s one to two months earlier than the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Galaxy S20 FE. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 was launched in September 2020, while the Galaxy S20 FE was launched in October 2020.

The report also claims that the Galaxy S21 FE could be priced around KRW 700,000 (around $630) in South Korea. The Galaxy S21 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 have been designed to fill the gap created by the missing launch of new Galaxy Note series smartphones. Samsung was the world’s biggest smartphone brand in Q1 2021 and it sold 77 million units during the quarter.

Galaxy S21 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3 rumored specs

The Galaxy S21 FE could feature a 120Hz Super AMOLED display, an Exynos 2100/Snapdragon 888 processor, 8GB RAM, 128GB/256GB internal storage, and a 4,500mAh battery. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is expected to feature a 120Hz refresh rate for both cover and internal foldable Super AMOLED displays. It could also feature a triple-camera setup, an S Pen, a 4,400mAh battery, and an official IP rating.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3, whose images were leaked last week, appears to feature a bigger, 1.83-inch cover display. It could also feature Snapdragon 888, 8GB RAM, 256GB internal storage, a dual-camera setup on the front, a punch-hole-shaped cutout for the internal camera, a 120Hz internal foldable display with UTG (Ultra Thin Glass), and an IP rating. It will be powered by a 3,300mAh battery and features 15W fast charging.

Looks like Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong could get that pardon after all

Samsung vice chairman and heir to the conglomerate Lee Jae-yong was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison earlier this year. While he has fought against the charges in the past, Lee decided not to appeal his imprisonment. This meant that he would serve the entire sentence behind bars.

However, there are now growing calls from within South Korea seeking a pardon for the Samsung boss. The South Korean president has the authority to grant a pardon. It seems that Moon Jae-in, the country’s president, isn’t opposed to the idea.

The South Korean president isn’t opposed to the pardon

Five major lobby groups sent a petition to the Cheong Wa Dae, the official presidential residence, seeking a pardon for Lee Jae-yong. Their contention is that Samsung requires strong leadership if the company and indeed the country is to come out of the challenges posed by the pandemic.

Samsung is South Korea’s leading semiconductor company and one of the largest in the world. Korean business leaders feel that without strong leadership at the top, Samsung and consequently South Korea could lose their spot in the global semiconductor market. Even religious leaders have now started calling on the president to grant Lee a pardon.

Moon agreed during a Q&A session at the Cheong Wa Dae that “The global competition for semiconductors is intensifying and it is true that we need to enhance competitiveness in the chip industry.” However, he pointed out that “fairness, precedents and public sentiment must be considered at the same time.”

Moon has said that he will take into account people’s opinions before deciding whether to grant a pardon. Such decisions tend to have political considerations as well. It would be important for the leaders to ensure that the public sentiment doesn’t turn against the government.

The momentum seems to be favoring Lee Jae-yong so far. Opposition and government lawmakers have both joined the calls for his pardon. Other business leaders and even civil activists are now in its favor. Moon has left the door open as well which is a promising sign for all those in favor of a pardon.
