Samsung Smart Switch update brings support for data transfer from Windows Phone 8.1 devices

Samsung is rolling out a major new update to its Smart Switch app for Android today. The update, available on the Play Store and on Samsung’s Galaxy Apps store, brings support for transferring content from smartphones running Windows Phone 8.1. It’s something we probably should have seen a long time ago, but given the low penetration of Windows Phone devices, it isn’t surprising that it is only now that Microsoft’s mobile OS is getting proper support.

The updated version of Smart Switch also adds the ability to transfer additional content from Apple devices running iOS 9 – the app will now let you download all your documents from Apple’s iWorks suite of office applications. Message backup and restore is getting speed improvements as well, which should be welcomed by those with a lot of messages on their device. The update also brings bug fixes, or at least one bug fix, as the changelog would suggest.

Grab the new Smart Switch from the Play Store or the Galaxy Apps store.

Samsung’s temporary fix for Galaxy Note 7 explosions is to stop the device from fully charging

Samsung has been sending out notices to everyone who has purchased the Galaxy Note 7 asking them to return their device as soon as possible and get a new one with a battery that won’t make the phone explode. The Note 7 recall is one of the largest in the tech world in recent history, and the news has been spreading like wildfire ever since the recall was announced. But there are probably a lot of folks out there who have ignored the warnings and are continuing to use their phones, and Samsung has now come up with a plan to make things safer for such consumers, at least in South Korea.

The company today published an advertisement in Korean newspaper The Seoul Shinmun that it will be rolling out a software update to the Galaxy Note 7 that will prevent the device from charging beyond 60 percent. This update will start rolling out on September 20, a day after Samsung is set to offer replacement units to customers. South Korean folks will be celebrating a major national holiday this coming week, and The Associated Press says this is the main cause behind some consumers choosing to ignore the recall for the time being. Samsung is reportedly sending over free pizzas to its carrier and retail partners to thank them for handling the recall and has asked them to work during the holidays in order to tackle the recall process.

There’s no word on whether the same update will be rolled out to the Note 7 in other markets; it would certainly be in the company’s best interest to do so, as at the end of the day it can’t exactly force every customer to turn in their faulty phone. Maybe Samsung should just make the update force the Note 7 to shut down every five minutes with a warning that it should be replaced, or at least have a nagging notification that keeps reminding the user of what could happen should they continue clinging on to their Note 7.

What do you think of Samsung’s idea to use a software update to prevent the Note 7 from exploding?

Footage shows a Galaxy S7 overheating and burning for no apparent reason

If someone at Samsung rhetorically asked whether things could get any worse for the company they would be beating themselves up right about now. A Galaxy S7 edge owner in the United States has already sued Samsung after the handset allegedly overheated and burned while it was in his pocket and now a Galaxy S7 owner in the United Kingdom claims that her handset overheated and start burning for no apparent reason while it was just lying on the table in a cafe.

It’s not uncommon to hear about these battery issues but usually there’s a third-party cable or counterfeit charger involved. Supply teacher Sarah Crockett who owns this phone says that the handset was not being charged, she just kept it on the table as they sat down which is what we all normally do.

The cafe has released security footage which shows that smoke starts coming out of a phone on the table for no apparent reason, it happened so unexpectedly that the guests were shocked as well. The Galaxy S7 kept burning up until a waiter picked it up using a cloth and dumped it outside. Crockett says that the phone suddenly expanded and got really hot before smoke started billowing out of it, she has sent this footage to Samsung.

As far as the Galaxy Note 7 is concerned, Samsung has acknowledged that there’s a battery cell issue that’s causing the handsets to blow up which is why it has initiated a recall. It hasn’t identified any such issue with the Galaxy S7 series as yet and in response to this report, a Samsung spokesman said that “There are no known safety issues with Galaxy S7 devices.” The company added that it’s currently investigating this matter and is in contact with the customer.

Samsung is already feeling the financial impact of the Galaxy Note 7 recall and continued reports of similar problems with Galaxy S7 handsets could be disastrous for its brand image. The Galaxy S7 series has done a lot to turn the company’s mobile division’s fortunes around and so far these appear to be isolated incidents. Samsung will certainly be keeping its fingers crossed that this doesn’t turn out to be anything more than that.

Here’s the site where you can check if your Galaxy Note 7 needs exchanging

Samsung has been working hard on replacing all of the Galaxy Note 7′s out in the wild following the discovery of a major battery issue that has resulted in more than 70 cases of the device burning up and exploding. Samsung had launched an IMEI check process for Note 7′s in Hong Kong and China to help people detect if their device is a ticking time bomb, and the company has now launched a website for the same for all consumers of the Galaxy Note 7.

The link below will take you to that website, where you can enter your Galaxy Note 7′s IMEI to see if it is “in the list of affected devices.” Considering every Note 7 sold outside the Chinese market has the faulty battery, this IMEI check is probably just Samsung’s way of giving users an official confirmation that they should turn in their phone as soon as humanly possible. The Korean giant has refuted claims that it would be remotely disabling devices on its own after a few days, so make sure to call up your retailer or carrier right away, ask for a replacement, and also spread the news to your friends and loved ones to make sure the information gets around.

Oh, and don’t forget to shut down your Note 7 once you’re done.

Check your Galaxy Note 7′s IMEI here

Note: You can check your device’s IMEI by entering *#06# in the dialer, or by heading into the Settings » About device » Status menu and looking under the IMEI tab. The IMEI will also be listed on the back of your device, although based on your phone’s color this text might be hard to make out.
