Larger Galaxy S8 logo appears, confirming phone moniker

It was said some weeks ago that Samsung would release two models of the Galaxy S8: a 5.8-inch Galaxy S8 and a 6.2-inch Galaxy S8 Plus, designed to appease Galaxy Note 7 users who were reluctant to give up the most perfect smartphone yet to grace the market and crave larger screens – which explains why the Galaxy S8 Plus will feature the widest display the S series has ever seen (of course, the Galaxy Mega series once boasted of the widest screens in the “Galaxy”).

Well, we now have a logo as evidence that the 6.2-inch Galaxy S8 will bear the moniker “Galaxy S8+.” As if you couldn’t have guessed it, famous leakster Evan Blass, a.k.a. @evleaks, is back with the logo of the larger Galaxy S8. The logo tells us that Samsung is dropping the “Edge” from its phone monikers this year, which fits in line with what we’ve heard about the Korean giant living on the edge with its new dual-display design and functionality and the below-expected sales of the flat-paneled Galaxy S7. The moniker itself, containing the “+” symbol, has been used with the Galaxy S6 edge+ model announced on the same day in 2015 as the Galaxy Note 5.

Apart from its 6.2-inch screen differentiation from its smaller-screened sibling, the Galaxy S8+ is rumored to feature a higher storage configuration out of the box (128GB as opposed to 64GB of storage for the 5.8-inch Galaxy S8). Both handsets will feature the temporary Samsung-exclusive Snapdragon 835, along with a front camera with autofocus, new AI Bixby based on S-Voice, an iris scanner, and perhaps include an S Pen accessory. This will mark the very first time that Samsung has utilized only dual-curved displays in its high-end Galaxy S series.

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ could be unveiled as early as March 29th, though a broader estimate places the launch date as late as April 15th.

Maybe we should lower our expectations for the Galaxy S8

With the Galaxy S8, Samsung’s biggest task is reminding consumers that its smartphones are still safe to use, that the battery issues that plagued the Galaxy Note 7 and made it prone to burning up are something that will never be repeated. Samsung has revealed its plans to perform extra testing on the Galaxy S8 before unleashing it on the market, which is the reason why the flagship won’t be unveiled at this year’s Mobile World Congress.

But more than reassuring consumers about the safety of its smartphones, Samsung has two very crucial tasks at hand: differentiate its next flagship from the competition in just the right way, and catch up in areas where its competition has left it far behind. The catching up will no doubt be done in the field of artificial assistance, with Samsung’s Bixby made out to be the company’s answer to the likes of Google Now (which was recently rebranded as Google Assistant) and Apple’s Siri.

The differentiation? That comes in the form of large curved, near bezel-less displays in what are supposedly handsets similar in size to the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. Quite a few Chinese manufacturers have gotten on-board the dual-edge smartphone bandwagon, so simply riding out the wave with another Edge smartphone like the S7 edge or the Galaxy Note 7 wouldn’t be enough for the Korean giant. The Galaxy Note 7 was as close to perfection as a smartphone can be, and maybe there isn’t a lot Samsung can do to make the Galaxy S8 a force to reckon with in such a short while.

A lot has been said about the Galaxy S8 (and the Galaxy S8 Plus). They said it would have 6GB of RAM, but that’s not confirmed for every market. A fingerprint sensor under the glass up front? Nope, Samsung seems to think an out-of-reach position beside the camera module is a better idea (although this might be a deliberate decision). Dual cameras on the back? Please, why should Samsung go through the pain of taking another major step forward in smartphone imaging, when it already has a top-notch camera on its flagships, one that hasn’t been beaten by the competition in any meaningful way? Just forget about larger batteries, as it seems manufacturers are simply not interested in offering more than a day’s worth of battery life on their flagship smartphones.

Where am I going with all this? There was a report earlier today saying that Samsung’s Bixby is possibly based on S Voice, with a comment from one of our readers wondering why the price of the S8 is expected to be higher than previous flagships if the company isn’t bringing us drastically improved features. It got me wondering: maybe we are all getting too hopeful of what Samsung has in store for us.

I’ll say it again: The Galaxy Note 7 was pretty much a thing of perfection, and expecting Samsung to hit it out of the park with the Galaxy S8 just six (or eight) months later would be rather unfair. When you have a device that can take on everything else on the market and come out on top all things considered even a few months later, it isn’t wrong to step back, focus on improving things that aren’t up to the mark (like that iris scanner), and aim for a galactic leap at a later time.

Even if the leap doesn’t come with the Galaxy S8, the device will bring a couple of important changes to Samsung’s smartphone lineup. Samsung is finally moving to on-screen buttons (necessitated by the larger screen), and the device will reportedly feature a level of voice control not seen on any other smartphone (or mobile operating system), with Bixby expected to have a dedicated button on one side of the device.

The Galaxy S8 will also put an end to flat screens on the company’s flagship line, and maybe even bring the S Pen out of its Galaxy Note exclusivity. In fact, even the camera experience might be drastically improved or different. There is next to no information available on what Samsung is doing with the cameras on its next hero device, except that it will add autofocus to the front camera and might not adopt the dual camera trend that has permeated the market.

It’s very easy to think that Samsung could pull off the feat of adding so many new features and improvements to the Galaxy S8, but perhaps we should be realistic in our expectations for the upcoming device. Samsung could very well be focused on just a few things instead of aiming for everything the rumor mill has churned out. I’m not sure even the placement of that fingerprint sensor is final despite the barrage of leaked images, as it would be a defiant move on the company’s part to make such an important function hard to reach for many users.

Without a look at the final product, or a leak that puts an end to all speculation, the least we can do is to temper our hopes that the Galaxy S8 is going to be the one device to rule them all. Bixby might not be anything more than a glorified S Voice that still can’t properly understand your accent, the camera could simply receive improvements to the image processing algorithm, and that iris scanner might just continue to be as imperfect as it was on the Note 7. Harman Kardon audio? That’s probably a ways off from being properly implemented in Galaxy smartphones.

There’s no telling what will go down, and it would be best for everyone to calm down now than be disappointed by what Samsung shows off a couple of months later.

Daily Deal: Pick up a new Gear VR for 54% off

Amazon has rather unexpectedly slashed the price of the 2016 variant of the Gear VR, so while stock lasts, you can pick one up for just $45.99. This is the same model that was released alongside the now-recalled Galaxy Note 7 last year, so it features both a USB Type-C port and microUSB; meaning it’s compatible with the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge and Galaxy Note 5.

Want to take advantage of this deal? Cool. Simply click the Buy Now button below. We strongly advise you to hurry, though, as Amazon only has a limited amount of inventory available for this specific deal, and once it’s gone, it’s gone. We should state, however, this isn’t International promotion, so you’ll only be able to snag yourself one for the discounted price if you don’t reside in the United States.

Samsung’s Bixby assistant said to be based on S Voice, not Viv Labs’ technology

Samsung’s upcoming AI-powered voice assistant Bixby was previously speculated to be built by Viv Labs, an AI specialist Samsung acquired last year. It was expected to debut with the Galaxy S8 and the S8 Plus, replacing S Voice and offering much better capabilities. However, if a new report from The Wall Street Journal is to be believed, Bixby is based on S Voice rather than on Viv Labs’ AI technology.

The Wall Street Journal‘s report, citing people familiar with the matter, states that Bixby has been upgraded from S Voice by Samsung’s engineers over the past few months. It will reportedly be able to “answer voiced questions from users,” and may come with a dedicated hardware button, as suggested earlier. If Bixby is to compete with Amazon’s Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple’s Siri, it needs to be much better than the current version of S Voice.

What do you think about this report? Of course, you should take this information with a pinch of salt. However, if this turns out to be true, do you think Samsung’s strategy of upgrading S Voice to Bixby rather than building it from ground up was a wise choice?

Galaxy C5 Pro launch nears as Retail Mode video surfaces

Over the course of the past few weeks, we’ve heard an awful lot about the Galaxy C5 Pro. We first reported on its existence back in September 2016, and now we’ve managed to obtain a copy of the introductory video from its Retail Mode demo application (the software used to showcase the handset’s best features in brick-and-mortar stores) courtesy of RetailSamsung, which not only suggests that its release is right around the corner, but also gives us our best look at the handset to date.

Check it out below:

Recent leaks, rumors and speculation point towards the Galaxy C5 Pro sporting a 5.2/5.5-inch Full HD display, a Snapdragon 625 processor, an Adreno 506 GPU, 6GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable internal storage and a 16-megapixel front- and rear-facing camera. It’s also believed to ship running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, but will of course be on the list to receive the Android 7.0 Nougat upgrade. Unfortunately, though, there’s no telling how soon it will arrive on the handset after its release.

Samsung, the second largest tablet vendor on the planet, saw its tablet shipments decline by 10 percent in the final quarter of 2016. Samsung is going to try and turn around things with two new tablets that it’s going to launch at MWC 2017 – the Galaxy Tab S3 and the Windows 10-powered Galaxy TabPro S2. With new Samsung tablets on the horizon, we’ve got to ask you, are you still interested in buying a new tablet? Vote below and let us know what you think in the comments section.

Galaxy C9 Pro now available to pre-order for all in India

Samsung has opened up pre-orders for the Galaxy C9 Pro, which carries a price tag of Rs. 36,900 ($551), on its online portal and from select brick-and-mortar stores in India. Customers reserving a device will have up until Sunday, February 12 to do so in order to qualify for the first round of shipping, which is expected to start on Friday, February 24. This might be the logo for Samsung’s upcoming AI assistant Bixby

We’ve regularly been reporting about Samsung’s upcoming AI-powered voice assistant Bixby over the past few weeks. Bixby is said to compete with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri, offering support for 7-8 languages as well as visual search and text recognition features. The company has now filed a trademark application with the European Trade Mark and Design Network for Bixby’s logo.

As you can see in the document (with application number 016343931) below, the logo resembles the alphabet ‘B’ as well as the numerical ’8′. The trademark application’s description closely matches to that of Bixby’s trademark application. So, we think that the logo is most probably for Bixby, which is expected to debut with the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus. We can independently confirm that Bixby will offer support for voice commands in English, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Korean, Portuguese Latin, Spanish, and Spanish Latin languages.

The South Korean smartphone giant is also readying something called Samsung Hello, which might be an AI-powered Google Now-like service for the Galaxy S8 and the S8 Plus. What do you think about Bixby’s logo?
