Specs comparison: Galaxy M30s vs. Galaxy M40

The Galaxy M40 is currently Samsung’s top-of-the-line M series model. It is, however, not the best device in the online-exclusive lineup as we noted in our review. The Korean company has made some weird component choices with the M40, making it objectively worse than some of the lower-priced models in certain aspects.

The Galaxy M30 was already a better device than the M40 in some key areas, but with the launch of the Galaxy M30s, the positioning of the M40 looks even more unimpressive. As you can see in the comparison below, barring the speedier chipset and the resultant performance gains, the M40 doesn’t really offer anything better than the M30s in terms of raw specs.

Of course, Samsung would like you to believe the M40’s punch-hole display is a major differentiating factor, but we doubt many customers would be willing to trade the M30s massive battery, Super AMOLED panel, or the higher-resolution primary camera for that. In our opinion, the only reasons why anyone should pick the M40 over the M30s are the former’s relatively lag-free performance, smaller footprint, and weight.

All of this makes the Galaxy M40 a much tougher sell, particularly when the M30s is priced lower. It is clear the M40 sales will deteriorate further with the launch of the M30s.

Specs comparison: Galaxy M30s vs. Galaxy M30

Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy M30s in India today. Going by the name, it is supposed to be an upgraded version of the existing M30, but how much of an improvement is it really? Well, when compared to the other recently-launched ‘s’ variants, the M30s definitely brings a lot more upgrades to the table.

As the spec comparison below shows, the Galaxy M30s boasts upgraded rear cameras, a massive 6,000mAh battery, and a faster Exynos 9611 SoC. It also runs a newer version of One UI and comes with a few extra software features (mainly in the camera department), as you’ll find detailed in our soon-to-be-published review.

The Galaxy M30 already comes with a large 5,000mAh battery, but Samsung is pushing the boundaries even further with the new model. In the all-important camera department, the M30s bumps the resolution of the primary rear camera to 48 MP and the neighboring ultrawide lens to 8 MP.

Clearly, all of these are substantial improvements that make the Galaxy M30s much more compelling than what the name suggests. In fact, given the pricing, it appears to be a much bigger competitor to the Galaxy M40 rather than the M30.

Galaxy M30s launched in India: Features, price, and release date

After numerous leaks and teasers, Samsung has finally announced the Galaxy M30s in India today. In line with the company’s recent ‘s’ models, the Galaxy M30s is an upgraded version of the existing M30. However, unlike its A series counterparts, the M30s offers more substantial upgrades over the original model. In fact, the changes are big enough to warrant a bump in the model number, but Samsung thought otherwise.

Galaxy M30s specs include multiple improvements over Galaxy M30

Compared to the Galaxy M30, the M30s comes with updated rear cameras, a bigger 6,000mAh battery, a newer Exynos 9611 octa-core chipset, and more. The rest of the specs remain mostly unchanged, with a 6.4-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-U display, 4/6GB RAM, 64/128GB storage, and 15W fast charging. On the software front, the new model runs One UI 1.5 based on Android Pie.

The Galaxy M30s brings some significant hardware and software improvements in the camera department. Though it still sports a triple-camera system on the back and a single selfie shooter, Samsung has bumped the resolution and capabilities of the rear cameras considerably. The rear camera system now consists of a 48 MP primary camera, 8 MP ultrawide lens, and a 5 MP depth sensor.

Along with the improved optics, the M30s also offers camera features such as Super slow-mo, Super steady, Hyperlapse, 4K recording, and Night mode, etc. The selfie camera, however, remains the same at 16 MP with no new features.

Price starts at Rs. 13,999, goes on sale September 29

The Galaxy M30s is priced at Rs. 13,999 and Rs. 16,999 for the 4GB+64GB and 6GB+128GB configurations. Color options include Opal Black, Pearl White, and Sapphire Blue. Like the M30, it will be available for purchase exclusively on Samsung India’s online store and Amazon.in starting September 29. Galaxy Watch Active Camera Controller app lets you take pictures and videos

Samsung had talked about the Camera Controller app when it announced the Galaxy Watch Active 2 last month. The app enables you to capture photos and videos on your connected phone via the smartwatch. It basically puts a viewfinder on your wrist.

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 isn’t out as yet (outside Korea) but this feature can now be used on the Galaxy Watch Active. The Camera Controller app is available for download. You can use it on the Galaxy Watch Active provided you have one of the handful of supported smartphones.

Take pictures and videos with the Galaxy Watch Active

There’s no complicated setup involved here. Simply download the Camera Controller app from the Galaxy Store and install it on your Galaxy Watch Active. Bear in mind that the app can only be used when your smartwatch is paired to a compatible smartphone.

Upon launching the Camera Controller app, you will be prompted to open the Camera app on your smartphone. A tap on the smartwatch’s display accomplishes that. You can then simply tap on the shutter button to take a photo. You can even tap in the frame to focus on the desired subject. Swipe up or down from the bottom or top bezel to switch between the front and rear cameras. Tap on the timer icon to activate a countdown.

Despite the obvious size limitation of the Galaxy Watch Active’s display, the app works well. There’s no noticeable lag between the time you hit the shutter button and the picture being taken. This feature will prove to be useful in situations where you have the smartphone on a tripod and what to take a picture of yourself. You’re even able to preview the shot right on the smartwatch itself. So you could keep going until you get the perfect shot without having to jog up to the phone after every single shot.

The Camera Controller app can even help with video recording. Not only can it start recording video but it also shows a live preview of the frame so you can always keep an eye on what the camera is recording. You will have to switch to the video mode in the smartphone’s camera app first, though. The recorded video can’t be played back on the Galaxy Watch Active.

Only the Galaxy Watch Active and Galaxy Watch Active 2 are compatible with this app. No other Samsung smartwatch is compatible. The wearable device must be paired with a Galaxy S10 or Galaxy Note 10 series handset or a Galaxy Fold for this to work.

Exclusive: Samsung Android 10 beta details for Galaxy Note 10 and S10

It’s that time of the year when Samsung launches a beta program for the upcoming major Android update. Google has decided to no longer name its Android versions after desserts so this year’s update will simply be called Android 10. We already have a detailed page for those who want to check if their Galaxy smartphone or tablet will get the Android 10 update.

There’s going to be a beta program before the update is released to the public. We have received some exclusive information about the Samsung Android 10 beta program for the Galaxy Note 10 and the Galaxy S10.

Samsung Android 10 beta details

We have it on good authority from sources who have a solid track record that the Samsung Android 10 beta program is going to be announced towards the end of this month. It won’t be long before the first beta build is released. The first Samsung Android 10 beta build is going to start rolling out in the United States and some countries across Europe in October.

Some of you may recall that the Galaxy S9 One UI (Android Pie) beta was launched in November last year. The company also opened up the beta for the Galaxy Note 9 later that month. There’s no reason to believe so far that the Galaxy Note 10 will be excluded from the program this time around. Samsung ended up opening the beta to the Galaxy S8 duo and the Galaxy Note 8 as well. However, since those devices aren’t eligible for the Android 10 update, there’s no use hoping for a miracle.

Samsung went through the motions of the One UI beta program fairly quickly. The first stable Galaxy S9 Android Pie build was released on December 24, 2018. It was the fastest rollout of a major Android update from Samsung. Hopefully, we’ll see a repeat of that for Android 10 as well.

Will my Galaxy S8 or Galaxy Note 8 get the Android 10 update?

Is my Galaxy S8 or Galaxy Note 8 going to be updated to Android 10? That’s a question many have been asking in the last couple of months, and with Google recently releasing the Android 10 update for its Pixel devices, interest in the newest version of the OS has increased further. While Samsung will update plenty of phones to Android 10, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 are not going to be among them.

No Android 10 update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8

The reason is simple: Samsung has always offered only two major upgrades for its flagship devices. The company also provides the same number of major upgrades to mid-range and budget devices as well, and while it’s unfortunate that Samsung doesn’t make a distinction between flagship phones and lower-end devices, it is what it is. The Galaxy S8, S8+, and Galaxy Note 8 were launched with Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box and were subsequently updated to Android Oreo and Android Pie, so they have already received the updates they were eligible for.

In short, Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and Galaxy Note 8 users are going to have to make do with Android Pie on their phones and will need to buy a newer Galaxy smartphone — like a Galaxy S9, Note 9, Galaxy S10, or Galaxy Note 10 — to take advantage of Android 10 and version 2.0 of Samsung’s One UI interface, which will accompany the Android 10 update. Even if Samsung changes its mind and decides to offer a third major upgrade for its flagship phones, the company is unlikely to apply the updated policy to its 2017 Galaxy S and Note flagships.

Galaxy Note 10 sales shatter records in South Korea

The Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ have secured a new record in Samsung’s home country: More than a million units of the new Note flagships have been sold in 25 days after they first went on sale. The Galaxy S8 had previously held the record – it had sold over a million units in 37 days after launch. The first-month performance for the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ is the best yet of any device in Samsung’s S and Note series and more than double that of the Galaxy Note 9.

Pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ had collectively reached 1.3 million in just ten days, as had been revealed last month, so it’s not surprising that the actual sales figures are pretty similar. As expected, the Plus model sold more than the regular Note 10 – out of the total sales, 67 percent were those of the Galaxy Note 10+. Samsung also says the number of female customers and customers in their 20s increased for the Galaxy Note 10/10+ compared to the Galaxy Note 9 but didn’t offer any concrete figures.

The Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ were both launched only in a 5G variant in South Korea. There had been reports of the South Korean government asking Samsung to launch LTE models of the two phones because of the relatively limited availability of 5G networks, but it’s unclear if the company will actually do that. Perhaps Note 10 and Note 10+ sales in South Korea would have been even higher if customers had the option to go for LTE variants, which would be cheaper than the 5G models, but Samsung is no doubt happy with the record-breaking sales it has already managed.

Galaxy S10 gets September security update on T-Mobile

T-Mobile has released an update with the September 2019 security patch for the Galaxy S10 lineup. T-Mobile was the slowest of the major US carriers with previous Galaxy S10 software updates, but this time around, it has beaten other carriers to the punch and is the first to roll out the September security patch to Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+ owners stateside.

The latest update for T-Mobile Galaxy S10 devices comes with firmware version G97*UOYN2BSI4 and doesn’t bring anything other than the newest Android security patch, according to the changelog. The update is a roughly 200 MB download and is available over the air right now – you can update your Galaxy S10e, S10, or S10+ from the Settings » Software update menu on the device.

OTA updates are usually released in stages, so you might have to wait a couple of hours before it’s available for your phone. You can, however, skip the queue and jump onboard the new software by downloading the relevant firmware from our firmware archive (S10e | S10 | S10+) and flashing it on your device using a Windows PC.
